The Lesson from the Withered Fig Tree

^20 (A)As they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered away to its roots.

⁶ If anyone does not abide in me ^(A)he is thrown away like a branch and withers; ^(B)and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned.

¹⁴ And he said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard it.

¹³ He answered, ^(A)“Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted ^(B)will be rooted up.

^19 (A)And seeing a fig tree by the wayside, he went to it and found nothing on it but only leaves. And he said to it, “May no fruit ever come from you again!” And the fig tree withered at once.

²⁰ When the disciples saw it, they marveled, saying, “How did the fig tree wither at once?” ²¹ And Jesus answered them, ^(B)“Truly, I say to you, ^(C)if you have faith and ^(D)do not doubt, you will not only do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ^(E)‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ it will happen. ²² And ^(F)whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, ^(G)if you have faith.”

⁶ but ^(A)when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root, ^(B)they withered away.

¹² These are hidden reefs^{[a] (A)}at your love feasts, as they feast with you without fear, ^(B)shepherds feeding themselves; ^(C)waterless clouds, ^(D)swept along by winds; fruitless trees in late autumn, twice dead, ^(E)uprooted;

⁸ But ^(A)if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed, ^(B)and its end is to be burned.
