⁴² Jesus called them over and said to them, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over^(A) them, and those in high positions act as tyrants over them. ⁴³ But it is not so among you.^(B) On the contrary, whoever wants to become great among you will be your servant,^{(C) 44} and whoever wants to be first among you will be a slave to all.^{(D) 45} For even the Son of Man^(E) did not come to be served, but to serve,^(F) and to give his life^(G) as a ransom^(H) for many.”^[a](I)

Take Up Your Cross

²³ Then he said to them all, “If anyone wants to follow after^[a] me, let him deny himself,^(A) take up his cross daily,^[b] and follow me.^{(B) 24} For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of me will save it.^{(C) 25} For what does it benefit someone if he gains the whole world, and yet loses or forfeits himself?^{(D) 26} For whoever is ashamed of me and my words,^(E) the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his glory^(F) and that of the Father and the holy angels.^(G)

³⁴ “I give you a new command: Love one another. Just as I have loved you, you are also to love one another. ³⁵ By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love^(A) one another.”

¹⁴ For the love of Christ compels us, since we have reached this conclusion, that one died for all,^(A) and therefore all died. ¹⁵ And he died for all^(B) so that those who live should no longer live for themselves,^(C) but for the one^(D) who died for them and was raised.

²⁰ I have been crucified with Christ, and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.^(A) The life I now live in the body,^[a] I live by faith in the Son of God,^(B) who loved^(C) me^(D) and gave himself^(E) for me.^(F)

³ Do nothing out of selfish ambition^(A) or conceit,^(B) but in humility^(C) consider others as more important^(D) than yourselves. ⁴ Everyone should look not to his own interests,^(E) but rather to the interests of others.^(F)
