¹⁴ The Word^(A) became flesh^(B) and dwelt^[a] among us. We observed his glory,^(C) the glory as the one and only^(D) Son^[b] from the Father, full of grace and truth.

³ For what the law could not do^(A) since it was weakened by the flesh,^(B) God did. He condemned sin in the flesh by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh^(C) as a sin offering,^[a](D)

⁴ When the time came to completion, God sent his Son,^(A) born of a woman,^(B) born under the law,

⁵ For there is one God^(A) and one mediator^(B) between God and mankind, the man^(C) Christ Jesus,

¹⁷ Therefore, he had to be like his brothers and sisters in every way, so that he could become a merciful and faithful high priest in matters^[a] pertaining to God, to make atonement^[b](A) for the sins of the people.^(B)
