The Request of James and John

³⁵^(A)And James and John, ^(B)the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us ^(C)whatever we ask of you.” ³⁶And he said to them, ^(D)“What do you want me to do for you?” ³⁷And they said to him, “Grant us ^(E)to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, ^(F)in your glory.” ³⁸Jesus said to them, ^(G)“You do not know what you are asking. Are you able ^(H)to drink the cup that I drink, or ^(I)to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” ³⁹And they said to him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, ^(J)“The cup that I drink ^(K)you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, ^(L)you will be baptized, ⁴⁰but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, ^(M)but it is for those for whom it has been ^(N)prepared.” ⁴¹And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John. ⁴²^(O)And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles ^(P)lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. ⁴³But ^(Q)it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant,^[a] ⁴⁴and whoever would be first among you must be ^(R)slave^[b] of all. ⁴⁵For even the Son of Man came not to be served but ^(S)to serve, and ^(T)to give his life as a ransom for ^(U)many.”

Christ's Example of Humility

2 So if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from ^(A)love, any ^(B)participation in the Spirit, any ^(C)affection and sympathy, ²^(D)complete my joy by being ^(E)of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. ³Do nothing from ^(F)selfish ambition or ^(G)conceit, but in ^(H)humility count others more significant than yourselves. ⁴Let each of you ^(I)look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. ⁵^(J)Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,^[a] ⁶^(K)who, though he was in ^(L)the form of God, did not count equality with God ^(M)a thing to be grasped,^[b] ⁷but ^(N)emptied himself, by taking the form of a ^(O)servant,^[c] ^(P)being born in the likeness of men. ⁸And being found in human form, he humbled himself by ^(Q)becoming obedient to the point of death, ^(R)even death on a cross. ⁹^(S)Therefore ^(T)God has ^(U)highly exalted him and bestowed on him ^(V)the name that is above every name, ¹⁰so that at the name of Jesus ^(W)every knee should bow, ^(X)in heaven and on earth and under the earth, ¹¹and ^(Y)every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is ^(Z)Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
