Preparation for the Mission of Jesus[a]
Chapter 1
Beginning of the Good News.[b] 1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.
2 It is written in the prophet Isaiah:[c]
“Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you;
he will prepare your way.
3 The voice of one crying out in the wilderness:
‘Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.’ ”
4 Hence, John the Baptist appeared in the desert, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 People from the entire Judean countryside and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem went out to him, and as they confessed their sins they were baptized by him in the Jordan River.
6 John was clothed in a garment of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and his food consisted of locusts and wild honey. 7 And this was the message he proclaimed: “One who is far more powerful than I am is coming after me. I am not worthy even to stoop down and loosen the straps of his sandals. 8 I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”[d]
Jesus Is Baptized by John.[e] 9 At that time,[f] Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 [g]And as he was coming up out of the water, he beheld the heavens break open and the Spirit descending upon him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven: “You are my beloved Son; in you I am well pleased.”
12 Jesus Is Tempted in the Desert.[h] The Spirit immediately drove him out into the desert. 13 He remained there for forty days, during which time he was tempted by Satan. He lived there among the wild beasts, while the angels ministered to him.
Is Jesus the Messiah?[i]
First Testimonies of the Messiah’s Mission
14 Jesus Inaugurates His Mission. After John had been arrested,[j] Jesus came to Galilee proclaiming the gospel of God, and saying, 15 “The time of fulfillment has arrived, and the kingdom of God is close at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.”
16 The First Disciples.[k] As Jesus was walking along by the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting their nets into the sea, for they were fishermen. 17 Jesus said to them, “Come, follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 18 Immediately, they abandoned their nets and followed him.
19 As he proceeded farther, he saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They also were in a boat mending their nets. 20 Immediately, he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired workers and followed him.
21 Jesus Heals a Man with a Demon.[l] They journeyed to Capernaum, and on the Sabbath Jesus immediately entered the synagogue and began to instruct the people. 22 They were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as the scribes.
23 In that synagogue there was a man with an unclean spirit, and he shrieked, 24 “What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.”[m] 25 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!”
26 The unclean spirit threw the man into convulsions and with a loud cry emerged from him. 27 The people were all amazed, and they began to ask one another, “What is this? It must be a new kind of teaching! With authority he gives commands even to unclean spirits, and they obey him!” 28 His reputation quickly began to spread everywhere throughout the entire region of Galilee.
29 Jesus Heals Peter’s Mother-in-Law. Immediately on leaving the synagogue, he went with James and John into the house of Simon and Andrew. 30 Simon’s mother-in-law[n] was lying in bed, sick with a fever, and they informed Jesus at once about her. 31 Jesus approached her, grasped her by the hand, and helped her up. Then the fever left her, and she began to serve them.
32 Other Healings. That evening, after sunset, they brought to him all those who were sick or possessed by demons.[o] 33 The whole town was present, crowded around the door. 34 He cured many who were afflicted with various diseases, and he drove out many demons, although he would not permit them to speak because they knew who he was.
35 Jesus Proclaims the Message and Heals the Sick. Early the next morning, long before dawn, he arose and went off to a secluded place, where he prayed. 36 Simon and his companions set forth in search of him, 37 and when they found him they said, “Everybody is looking for you.” 38 He replied, “Let us move on to the neighboring towns so that I may proclaim the message there as well. For this is the reason why I came.” 39 Then he traveled all throughout Galilee, preaching in their synagogues and driving out demons.
40 Jesus Heals a Man with Leprosy. A man with leprosy[p] approached and, kneeling before him, begged him, “If you choose to do so, you can make me clean.” 41 Moved with pity, “he stretched out his hand and touched him,[q] saying, “I do choose. Be made clean!” 42 Immediately, the leprosy left him and he was cured.
43 Jesus then sent him away at once, after first sternly warning him, 44 “See that you tell no one anything about this. Just go and show yourself to the priest and offer for your cleansing what Moses prescribed. That will be proof for them.”[r] 45 However, he went forth and began to proclaim the entire story, spreading the word far and wide. As a result, Jesus could no longer go openly into any town. Rather, he stayed outside in deserted places, and people continued to come to him from every quarter.

- Mark 1:1 Around the year 30, after centuries of silence, a prophet named John appears and unsettles his contemporaries. They are captivated by the force of his personality and the vehemence of his message. Then Jesus comes on the scene. Mark uses this story as a kind of prologue for his book, a kind of key for understanding the pages that follow: the Gospel, the “good news,” is here bursting out in the midst of humanity; the action of Jesus inaugurates the kingdom of God, the time of salvation.
- Mark 1:1 The Gospel is not primarily a book but rather God’s action for the salvation of humankind. The entire Book of Mark depicts Jesus as the promised and awaited one (the Messiah) and as the Son of God (see Mk 8:35; 10:29).
- Mark 1:2 The prophet Isaiah: the quotation that follows is a combination of Malachi (3:1) and Isaiah (40:3). See note on Mt 27:9.
- Mark 1:8 Baptize you with the Holy Spirit: see note on Mt 3:11.
- Mark 1:9 Mark retains only the essential elements of the divine manifestation, which here is given only to Jesus, whose mission is announced.
- Mark 1:9 At that time: Jesus probably began his public ministry about A.D. 27 at approximately 30 years of age (see Lk 3:23). Nazareth: see note on Mt 2:23. Baptized by John: see note on Mt 3:15 for the meaning of Jesus’ baptism.
- Mark 1:10 This passage has the involvement of all three persons of the Trinity: (1) the Father speaks; (2) the Son is baptized; and (3) the Holy Spirit descends on the Son.
- Mark 1:12 Jesus is already committed to his mission of combating Satan, the representative of all the forces of evil that batter humanity.
- Mark 1:14 People had a simple idea of the Messiah as a glorious figure: they were expecting a national hero, a political liberator, a restorer of their independence and their public worship, a leader who would bring Israel to world domination. But the reason why Jesus comes before the nation is quite different. This first part of Mark’s Gospel describes three periods. Three times the author gives a general summary of the activity of Jesus and describes a mission of the disciples; each period ends with a scene of hostility and lack of understanding. At the end of this first half of the book, the confession of Peter at Caesarea recognizes the Messiah without any misunderstanding. From that point on, the road will lead to the Passion; that development occupies the second half of the Gospel.
- Mark 1:14 After John had been arrested: the ministry of Jesus begins under the sign of his precursor’s martyrdom. This simple chronological marker is a veiled prefiguration of the suffering and death that await the Messiah. See note on Lk 3:20.
- Mark 1:16 See note on Mt 4:18-22.
- Mark 1:21 See note on Lk 4:31-41.
- Mark 1:24 The Holy One of God: this title is used only here and in Lk 4:34 and Jn 6:69. It refers more to Jesus’ divinity than to his Messiahship (see Lk 1:35).
- Mark 1:30 Simon’s mother-in-law: Paul (in 1 Cor 9:5) speaks of Peter being married.
- Mark 1:32 At sunset, the strictly enjoined Sabbath rest came to an end.
- Mark 1:40 Leprosy: see Lev 13–14.
- Mark 1:41 Touched him: an act that caused defilement according to the Law (see Lev 13:45-46). Jesus’ compassion superseded any consideration of defilement.

1 Ito ang simula ng Magandang Balita tungkol kay Jesu-Cristo, [ang Anak ng Diyos].[a] 2 Tulad(B) ng nakasulat sa aklat ni propeta Isaias,
“Narito ang sugo ko na aking ipadadalang mauuna sa iyo;
ihahanda niya ang iyong daraanan.
3 Ito(C) ang pahayag ng isang taong sumisigaw sa ilang:
‘Ihanda ninyo ang daraanan ng Panginoon,
gumawa kayo ng mga tuwid na landas na kanyang lalakaran!’”
4 At dumating nga sa ilang si Juan na Tagapagbautismo na nangangaral,[b] “Pagsisihan ninyo't talikuran ang inyong mga kasalanan at pabautismo kayo, upang kayo'y patawarin ng Diyos.” 5 Halos lahat ng taga-Judea at taga-Jerusalem ay pumunta kay Juan. Ipinahayag nila ang kanilang mga kasalanan at sila'y binautismuhan niya sa Ilog Jordan.

Malapit nang maghari ang Diyos![e] Kaya magsisi na kayo't talikuran ang inyong mga kasalanan. Paniwalaan ninyo ang Magandang Balita!”
Ang Pagtawag sa Apat na Mangingisda(J)
16 Habang naglalakad si Jesus sa tabi ng Lawa ng Galilea, nakita niya ang magkapatid na Simon at Andres na nanghuhuli ng isda sa pamamagitan ng lambat. Sila'y kapwa mga mangingisda. 17 Sinabi ni Jesus sa kanila, “Sumunod kayo sa akin at kayo'y gagawin kong mangingisda ng mga tao.” 18 Pagkasabi niya nito'y agad iniwan ng magkapatid ang kanilang mga lambat at sumunod sa kanya.
19 Nagpatuloy siya sa paglalakad, at sa di-kalayuan ay nakita naman niya ang magkapatid na Santiago at Juan, na mga anak ni Zebedeo. Sila'y nasa kanilang bangka at nag-aayos ng mga lambat. 20 Tinawag din sila agad ni Jesus at sila ay sumunod din sa kanya. Iniwan nila sa bangka ang kanilang ama na kasama ang kanilang mga upahang manggagawa.
Pinagaling ang Sinasapian ng Masamang Espiritu(K)
21 Nagpunta sina Jesus sa Capernaum, at nang sumunod na Araw ng Pamamahinga ay pumasok si Jesus sa sinagoga at nagturo. 22 Namangha(L) ang mga tao sapagkat nagtuturo siya nang may kapangyarihan, hindi tulad ng mga tagapagturo ng Kautusan.
23 Bigla namang pumasok sa sinagoga ang isang lalaking sinasapian ng masamang espiritu. Ito'y sumigaw, 24 “Ano ang pakay mo sa amin, Jesus na taga-Nazaret? Naparito ka ba upang kami'y puksain? Kilala kita! Ikaw ang Banal na mula sa Diyos.”
25 Ngunit iniutos ni Jesus sa masamang espiritu, “Tumahimik ka! Lumabas ka sa kanya!”
26 Pinangisay ng masamang espiritu ang lalaki at sumisigaw itong lumabas sa kanya. 27 Ang lahat ay namangha kaya't sila'y nagtanungan sa isa't isa, “Paanong nangyari iyon? Ito ay isang kakaibang katuruan! Makapangyarihan niyang nauutusan ang masasamang espiritu, at sumusunod naman ang mga ito sa kanya.”
28 Dahil dito, mabilis na kumalat sa buong Galilea ang balita tungkol kay Jesus.
Ang Pagpapagaling sa Maraming Tao(M)
29 Mula sa sinagoga ay nagtungo agad si Jesus at ang kanyang mga alagad, kasama sina Santiago at Juan, sa bahay nina Simon at Andres. 30 Noon ay nakahiga dahil nilalagnat ang biyenan ni Simon at ito'y agad nilang sinabi kay Jesus. 31 Kaya't nilapitan ni Jesus ang babae, hinawakan ito sa kamay at ibinangon. Noon di'y gumaling ito at naghanda ng pagkain para sa kanila.
32 Pagsapit ng gabi, pagkalubog ng araw, dinala kay Jesus ang lahat ng maysakit at ang mga sinasapian ng demonyo. 33 Halos lahat ng mga tagaroon ay nagkatipon sa harap ng bahay. 34 Pinagaling ni Jesus ang maraming maysakit, anuman ang kanilang karamdaman. Pinalayas din niya ang mga demonyo, at hindi niya hinayaang magsalita ang mga ito sapagkat alam nila kung sino siya.
Ang Pangangaral ni Jesus sa Galilea(N)
35 Madaling-araw pa'y bumangon na si Jesus at nagpunta sa isang lugar na walang tao at doon ay nanalangin siya. 36 Hinanap siya ni Simon at ng mga kasama nito, at 37 nang matagpuan siya ay sinabi nila, “Hinahanap po kayo ng mga tao.”
38 Ngunit sinabi niya sa kanila, “Kailangang pumunta rin tayo sa mga karatig-bayan upang makapangaral ako roon. Ito ang dahilan ng pagparito ko.”[f]
39 Nilibot(O) nga ni Jesus ang buong Galilea. Nangaral siya sa kanilang mga sinagoga at nagpalayas ng mga demonyo.
Pinagaling ni Jesus ang Isang Ketongin(P)
40 Isang taong may ketong[g] ang lumapit kay Jesus. [Lumuhod ito][h] at nagmakaawa, “Kung nais po ninyo, ako'y inyong mapapagaling at magagawang malinis.”
41 Nahabag si Jesus sa ketongin kaya't hinawakan niya ito at sinabi, “Oo, nais ko! Gumaling ka!” 42 Noon di'y nawala ang ketong ng lalaki at siya'y naging malinis. 43 Matapos mapagbilinan, agad siyang pinaalis ni Jesus 44 at(Q) pinagsabihan ng ganito: “Huwag mong sasabihin ito kaninuman. Sa halip ay magpunta ka at magpasuri sa pari. Pagkatapos, mag-alay ka ng handog para sa Diyos ayon sa iniutos ni Moises bilang patunay sa mga tao na ikaw ay magaling at malinis na.”
45 Ngunit pagkaalis ng lalaki ay kanyang ipinamalita ang nangyari sa kanya. Dahil dito, hindi na nakapasok pa ng bayan si Jesus. Nanatili na lamang siya sa mga hindi mataong lugar, subalit pinupuntahan pa rin siya ng mga tao mula sa iba't ibang dako.

5 And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.
6 And John was clothed with camel's hair, and with a girdle of a skin about his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild honey;
7 And preached, saying, There cometh one mightier than I after me, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to stoop down and unloose.
8 I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost.
9 And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan.

20 And straightway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him.
21 And they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught.
22 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.
23 And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out,
24 Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.
25 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him.
26 And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him.
27 And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him.
28 And immediately his fame spread abroad throughout all the region round about Galilee.
29 And forthwith, when they were come out of the synagogue, they entered into the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John.
30 But Simon's wife's mother lay sick of a fever, and anon they tell him of her.
31 And he came and took her by the hand, and lifted her up; and immediately the fever left her, and she ministered unto them.
32 And at even, when the sun did set, they brought unto him all that were diseased, and them that were possessed with devils.
33 And all the city was gathered together at the door.
34 And he healed many that were sick of divers diseases, and cast out many devils; and suffered not the devils to speak, because they knew him.
35 And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed.
36 And Simon and they that were with him followed after him.
37 And when they had found him, they said unto him, All men seek for thee.
38 And he said unto them, Let us go into the next towns, that I may preach there also: for therefore came I forth.
39 And he preached in their synagogues throughout all Galilee, and cast out devils.
40 And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and saying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.
41 And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou clean.
42 And as soon as he had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed.
43 And he straitly charged him, and forthwith sent him away;
44 And saith unto him, See thou say nothing to any man: but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing those things which Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.
45 But he went out, and began to publish it much, and to blaze abroad the matter, insomuch that Jesus could no more openly enter into the city, but was without in desert places: and they came to him from every quarter.

2 Just as it has been written in Yeshayah HaNavi, HINNENI SHOLEIACH MALACHI (Behold, I send my messenger) before your face, UPINNAH DERECH LEFANAI (and he will prepare the way before me, [SHEMOT 23:20; MALACHI 3:1]), he will prepare your way.
3 KOL KOREY BAMIDBAR (A voice of one shouting in the wilderness, TARGUM HASHIVIM YESHAYAH 40:3): Prepare the Derech Hashem (the way of the L-rd). Make his paths yashar (straight)!
4 Yochanan came with a mikveh mayim in the midbar, preaching a tevilah of teshuva for the selichat avon.
5 And all Yehudah and all Yerushalayim were going out to him, and they were submitted to a tevilah using the Yarden River as a mikveh mayim, making vidduy [to Hashem] of their averos (sins).
6 And Yochanan had camel hair clothing and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was arbe and devash. [MELACHIM BAIS 1:8; VAYIKRA 11:22]
7 And he was preaching, crying out as a maggid [for the Moshiach], saying, Hu Habah (He who Comes, i.e. Moshiach) after me has more chozek (strength) than me. I am not worthy to stoop down and remove his sandals.
8 I give you a tevilah in a mikveh mayim, but he [Moshiach] will give you a tevilah in the Ruach Hakodesh.
9 And it was during that period that Yehoshua from Natzeret of the Galil came and submitted to Yochanan’s tevilah in the mikveh mayim of the Yarden.
10 And ofen ort Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach came up out of the mikveh mayim, and he saw Shomayim being torn open, the Ruach Hakodesh of Hashem descending like a yonah on him.
11 And there was a bat kol out of Shomayim, ATAH BNI AHUVI ASHER BCHA CHAFATSTI (You are my Son, the beloved, with whom I am well pleased).
12 Then the Ruach Hakodesh ofen ort thrusts him out into the midbar.
13 And Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach was in the midbar arbaim yom varbaim lailah, undergoing nisyonos by Hasatan; and he was with the chayyat hassadeh (wild beasts, IYOV 5:23), and the malachim were the meshartei Hashem ministering to Moshiach.
14 Now after Yochanan was arrested, Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach came to the Galil, proclaiming the Besuras HaGeulah of Hashem,
15 And saying, The appointed time has been fulfilled and the Malchut Hashem has come near. Make teshuva, and have emunah in the Besuras HaGeulah.
16 And passing along beside Lake Kinneret, Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach saw Shimon and Andrew, the brother of Shimon, casting a reshet into the sea, for they were daiyagim (fishermen).
17 And he said to them, Come, follow me [as my talmidim], and I will make you to become daiyagei adam
18 And ofen ort, leaving their nets, they followed Moshiach.
19 And going on a little, he saw Yaakov Ben Zavdai and Yochanan his brother, who were also in the sirah (boat) repairing the nets.
20 And ofen ort he summoned them; and, leaving Zavdai their father in the sirah with the sachirim (hired workers), they went away to follow Moshiach.
21 And they enter into Kfar-Nachum, and ofen ort on Shabbos, entering into the shul, Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach exercised the ministry of moreh (teacher).
22 And they were astounded at Moshiach’s torah (teaching), for he was teaching them as one having samchut, and not as the Sofrim.
23 And, ofen ort, there was in their shul a man with a ruach hatameh, and he shouted,
24 Saying, Yehoshua of Natzeret, mah lanu vlach? (What to us and to you?) Have you come to bring us churban (destruction)? I have daas [of the raz, secret, mystery of] who you are, HaKadosh of Hashem (the Holy One of G-d).
25 But he rebuked the shed, saying, Shekit! Gey zich! And come out of him.
26 And, the ruach hatumah, throwing him into convulsions, let out a shrai and came out of him.
27 And all were astounded so that they began to discuss with each other, saying, What is this? Torah Chadasha with samchut? He gives orders to the shedim and they obey him?
28 And the besuroh (news) of Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach ofen ort (immediately) went forth everywhere into the surrounding region of the Galil.
29 And ofen ort (immediately), coming out of shul, they went into the bais (house) of Shimon and Andrew with Yaakov and Yochanan.
30 And the chamot (shviger, mother-in-law) of Shimon was bedridden and fever-stricken, and ofen ort (immediately) they tell Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach about her.
31 And approaching, holding her hand, Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach lifted her up, and the kaddachat (fever, DEVARIM 28:22) left her, and she then began functioning as their mesharetet (servant, keli kodesh, lady minister), waiting on them.
32 When erev (evening) came, with the setting of the shemesh (sun), they brought to Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach all the cholim (sick persons) and all those possessed by shedim (demons).
33 And the whole shtetl gathered together at the delet (door).
34 And Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach administered refuah (healing) to many cholim (sick persons) suffering from various machlot (illnessess), and he cast out many shedim (demons). And he did not permit the shedim to give utterance, for the shedim knew the raz (mystery, secret) of his identity, that he was the Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach.
35 And very early, while it was still dark, having got up, Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach went out and away to a desolate place, and was davening shacharis there.
36 And Shimon and those with him searched for Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach.
37 And they found Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach and they say to him, Everyone is seeking you [SHIR HASHIRIM 1:4; CHAGGAI 2:7].
38 And Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach says to them, Let us go elsewhere into the neighboring shtetlach, so that also there I may preach. For it was for this [purpose, tachlis] I came. [YESHAYAH 61:1]
39 And he came preaching in their shuls (synagogues) and casting out shedim in [the] whole [region of] the Galil.
40 And an ish metzorah (leper) comes to Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach begging him and kneeling down and saying, If you are willing, you are able to make me tahor (clean).
41 And being filled with rachmei Shomayim [and] stretching out his hand, Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach touched [the man] and says to him, I am willing. Be made tahor.
42 And ofen ort (immediately) the ish metzorah (leper) went away from Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach and he was made tahor.
43 And having sternly warned him, ofen ort (immediately) Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach sent him away.
44 And Rebbe, Melech HaMoshiach says to him, See [that] you say nothing to anyone, but rather go show yourself to the kohen and offer [the korban] for the tohorah (purification) of you which Moshe (Rabbeinu) gave mitzvah, for an edut (testimony) to them. [VAYIKRA 13:49, 14:1-32]
45 But the one having gone out began to preach many things and to spread the dvar, so that no longer was Rebbe Melech HaMoshiach able to openly enter into [the] shtetl, but he was outside in desolate places.
