And the Pharisees and some of the scribes came from Jerusalem together to him. [And the Pharisees and some of the scribes coming from Jerusalem, came together to him.]

And when they had seen some of his disciples eat bread with unwashen hands, they blamed [them].

For the Pharisees and all the Jews eat not, but they wash oft their hands, holding the traditions of elder men.

And when they turn again from [the] market, they eat not, but they be washed; and many other things there be, that be taken to them to keep, as washing of cups, and of water vessels [washings of cups and cruets], and of vessels of brass, and of beds.

And Pharisees and scribes asked him, and said [saying], Why go not thy disciples after the tradition of elder men, but with unwashen hands they eat bread?

And he answered, and said to them, Esaias prophesied well of you, hypocrites, as it is written, This people worshippeth me with lips [This people honoureth me with lips], but their heart is far from me;

and in vain they worship me, teaching the doctrines and the behests of men. [in vain truly they worship me, teaching the doctrines and commandments of men.]

For ye leave the commandment of God, and hold the traditions of men, as [the] washing of water vessels, and of cups; and many other things like these ye do. [Forsooth ye forsaking the commandment of God, hold the traditions of men, washings of cruets, and cups; and many other things like to these ye do.]

And he said to them, Well ye have made the commandment of God void, to keep your tradition. [And he said to them, Well ye have made the commandment of God void, that ye keep your tradition.]

10 For Moses said, Worship thy father and thy mother [Honour thou thy father and thy mother]; and he that curseth father or mother, die he by death.

11 But ye say, If a man [shall] say to father or mother, Corban, that is, Whatever gift is of me, it shall profit to thee;

12 and over [and further] ye suffer not him [to] do any thing to father or mother,

13 and ye break the word of God by your tradition, that ye have given[a]; and ye do many [other] such things.

14 And he again called the people, and said to them, Ye all hear me, and understand.

15 Nothing that is without a man, that entereth into him, may defoul him [Nothing without man is entering into him, that may defoul him]; but those things that come forth of a man, those it be that defoul a man.

16 If any man have ears of hearing [Forsooth if any man have ears to hear], hear he.

17 And when he was entered into an house, from the people, his disciples asked him the parable.

18 And he said to them [And he saith to them], [So] Ye be unwise also. Understand ye not, that all thing withoutforth that entereth into a man, may not defoul him?

19 for it hath not entered into his heart, but into the womb, and beneath it goeth out, purging all meats.

20 But he said, The things that go out of a man, those defoul a man.

21 For from within, of the heart of men come forth evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, manslayings,

22 thefts, avarices [covetousness, or over-hard keeping of goods], wickednesses, guile, unchastity, [an] evil eye, blasphemies [blasphemy], pride, folly.

23 All these evils come forth from within, and defoul a man,

24 And Jesus rose up from thence, and went into the coasts [the ends] of Tyre and Sidon. And he went into an house, and would that no man knew [And he gone into an house, would that no man know]; and he might not be hid.

25 For a woman, at once [anon] as she heard of him, whose daughter had an unclean spirit, entered, and fell down at his feet.

26 And the woman was heathen, of the generation of Syrophenician. And she prayed him, that he would cast out a devil from her daughter [that he would cast out a devil of her daughter].

27 And he said to her, Suffer thou, that the children be fulfilled first [Suffer thou, that the sons be filled first]; for it is not good to take the bread of children, and give [it] to hounds.

28 And she answered, and said to him, Yes, Lord; for little whelps eat under the board, of the crumbs of children.

29 And Jesus said to her, Go thou, for this word the fiend went out of thy daughter.[b]

30 And when she was gone into her house home, she found the damsel lying on the bed[c], and the devil gone out from her.

31 And again Jesus went out from the coasts of Tyre, and came through Sidon to the sea of Galilee [And again Jesus going out from the ends, or coasts, of Tyre, came through Sidon to the sea of Galilee], between the middle of the coasts of Decapolis.

32 And they bring to him a man deaf and dumb, and prayed him to lay his hand on him [and prayed him, that he put to him the hand].

33 And he took him aside from the people, and put his fingers into his ears[d]; and he spat, and touched his tongue.

34 And he beheld into heaven, and sorrowed within, and said [And he beholding into heaven, sorrowed within, and saith to him], Ephphatha, that is, Be thou opened.

35 And at once [And anon] his ears were opened, and the band of his tongue was unbound, and he spake rightly.

36 And he commanded to them, that they should say to no man; but how much he commanded to them, so much the more they preached [more],

37 and by so much the more they wondered, and said [saying], He did well all things, both he hath made deaf men to hear, and dumb men to speak.

The disciples eat with unwashed hands. The commandment of God is transgressed by man’s precepts. Of the woman of Syro-Phoenicia. Of the Sabbath.

And the Pharisees came together to him, and some of the scribes who came from Jerusalem. And when they saw certain of his disciples eat bread with common hands (that is to say, with unwashed hands), they complained. For the Pharisees and all the Jews, unless they wash their hands often, will not eat, observing the precepts of the elders. And when they come from the market, unless they wash, they will not eat. And there are many other things that they have taken upon themselves to observe, such as the washing of cups and pitchers, and of copper pots, and of tables.

Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why do your disciples not walk according to the precepts of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands? He answered and said to them, Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written: This people honours me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. In vain they worship me, teaching doctrines which are nothing but the commandments of men. For you lay the commandment of God aside, and observe the precepts of men, such as the washing of pitchers and of cups. And many other suchlike things you do.

And he said to them, All too well do you cast aside the commandment of God to maintain your own precepts. 10 For Moses said, Honour your father and your mother, and whosoever curses father or mother, let him die for it. 11 But you say a man should say to father or mother, Corban, which is, What you ask me for, to help you with, is dedicated to God. 12 And so you no longer let him do anything for his father or his mother, 13 making the word of God of no effect through your own precepts, which you have established. And many such things you do.

14 And he called all the people to him and said to them, Hearken unto me, every one of you, and understand. 15 There is nothing outside a man that can defile him when it enters into him. But those things that proceed out of him are the things that defile a man. 16 If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.

17 And when he went indoors, away from the people, his disciples asked him about the similitude. 18 And he said to them, Are you also without understanding? Do you not yet perceive that whatever thing from without enters into a person, it cannot defile him, 19 because it enters not into his heart, but into the stomach, and goes out into the drain that carries away all foods?

20 And he said, What defiles a man is that which comes out of a man. 21 For from within, namely out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts: adultery, fornication, murder, 22 theft, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, uncleanness, a wicked eye, slander, pride, foolishness. 23 All these evil things come from within, and defile a person.

24 From there he arose, and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into a house, and wanted no one to know. But he could not be hid. 25 For a certain woman whose daughter had a foul spirit heard of him, and came and fell at his feet. 26 The woman was a Greek out of Syro-Phoenicia, and she besought him to cast the devil out of her daughter. 27 And Jesus said to her, Let the children first be fed. For it is not meet to take the children’s bread and cast it to dogs. 28 She answered and said to him, Quite so, Master. Nevertheless, the dogs also eat under the table of the children’s crumbs. 29 And he said to her, For this saying, go your way; the devil has gone out of your daughter. 30 And when she arrived home, she found the devil departed, and her daughter lying on the bed.

31 And he departed again from the region of Tyre and Sidon, and went to the Sea of Galilee through the region of the Ten Cities. 32 And some people brought to him a man who was deaf and stammered in his speech, and asked him to put his hand upon him. 33 And he took him aside from the people, and put his fingers in his ears, and spat, and touched his tongue, 34 and looked up to heaven and sighed, and said to him, Ephatha; that is to say, Be opened. 35 And straightaway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spoke plainly.

36 And Jesus directed them to tell no one. But the more he forbad them, so much the more greatly they spoke of it. 37 And they were beyond measure astonished, saying, He has done all things well, and has made both the deaf to hear and the dumb to speak.

Then (A)[a]gathered unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the Scribes which came from Jerusalem.

And when they saw some of his disciples [b]eat meat with [c]common hands, (that is to say, unwashen) they complained.

(For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, [d]holding the traditions of the Elders.

And when they come from the [e]market, except they wash, they eat not: and many other things there be, which they have taken upon them to observe, as the washing of cups, and [f]pots, and of brazen vessels, and of beds.)

Then asked him the Pharisees and Scribes, Why [g]walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the Elders, but eat meat with unwashen hands?

[h]Then he answered and said unto them, Surely (B)Isaiah hath prophesied well of you, hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoreth me with lips, but their heart is far away from me.

[i]But they worship me in vain, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

[j]For ye lay the Commandments of God apart, and observe the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and of cups, and many other such like things ye do.

[k]And he said unto them, Well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may observe your own tradition.

10 For Moses said, (C)Honor thy father and thy mother: and (D)Whosoever shall speak evil of father or mother, let him [l]die the death.

11 But ye say, If a man say to father or mother, Corban, that is, By the gift that is offered by me, thou mayest have profit, he shall be free.

12 So ye suffer him no more to do anything for his father, or his mother.

13 Making the word of God of none authority, by your tradition which ye have ordained: and ye do many such like things.

14 (E)Then he calleth the whole multitude unto him, and said unto them, Hearken you all unto me, and understand.

15 There is nothing without a man, that can defile him, when it entereth into him: but the things which proceed out of him, are they which defile the man.

16 If any have ears to hear, let him hear.

17 And when he came into an house, away from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the parable.

18 And he said unto them, What? are ye without understanding also? Do ye not know that whatsoever thing from without entereth into a man, cannot defile him,

19 Because it entered not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught which is the [m]purging of all meats?

20 Then he said, That which cometh out of man, that defileth man.

That Which Defiles(A)

The Pharisees and some of the teachers of the law who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus and saw some of his disciples eating food with hands that were defiled,(B) that is, unwashed. (The Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, holding to the tradition of the elders.(C) When they come from the marketplace they do not eat unless they wash. And they observe many other traditions, such as the washing of cups, pitchers and kettles.[a])(D)

So the Pharisees and teachers of the law asked Jesus, “Why don’t your disciples live according to the tradition of the elders(E) instead of eating their food with defiled hands?”

He replied, “Isaiah was right when he prophesied about you hypocrites; as it is written:

“‘These people honor me with their lips,
    but their hearts are far from me.
They worship me in vain;
    their teachings are merely human rules.’[b](F)

You have let go of the commands of God and are holding on to human traditions.”(G)

And he continued, “You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe[c] your own traditions!(H) 10 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and mother,’[d](I) and, ‘Anyone who curses their father or mother is to be put to death.’[e](J) 11 But you say(K) that if anyone declares that what might have been used to help their father or mother is Corban (that is, devoted to God)— 12 then you no longer let them do anything for their father or mother. 13 Thus you nullify the word of God(L) by your tradition(M) that you have handed down. And you do many things like that.”

14 Again Jesus called the crowd to him and said, “Listen to me, everyone, and understand this. 15 Nothing outside a person can defile them by going into them. Rather, it is what comes out of a person that defiles them.” [16] [f]

17 After he had left the crowd and entered the house, his disciples asked him(N) about this parable. 18 “Are you so dull?” he asked. “Don’t you see that nothing that enters a person from the outside can defile them? 19 For it doesn’t go into their heart but into their stomach, and then out of the body.” (In saying this, Jesus declared all foods(O) clean.)(P)

20 He went on: “What comes out of a person is what defiles them. 21 For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, 22 adultery, greed,(Q) malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly. 23 All these evils come from inside and defile a person.”

Jesus Honors a Syrophoenician Woman’s Faith(R)

24 Jesus left that place and went to the vicinity of Tyre.[g](S) He entered a house and did not want anyone to know it; yet he could not keep his presence secret. 25 In fact, as soon as she heard about him, a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an impure spirit(T) came and fell at his feet. 26 The woman was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter.

27 “First let the children eat all they want,” he told her, “for it is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.”

28 “Lord,” she replied, “even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”

29 Then he told her, “For such a reply, you may go; the demon has left your daughter.”

30 She went home and found her child lying on the bed, and the demon gone.

Jesus Heals a Deaf and Mute Man(U)

31 Then Jesus left the vicinity of Tyre(V) and went through Sidon, down to the Sea of Galilee(W) and into the region of the Decapolis.[h](X) 32 There some people brought to him a man who was deaf and could hardly talk,(Y) and they begged Jesus to place his hand on(Z) him.

33 After he took him aside, away from the crowd, Jesus put his fingers into the man’s ears. Then he spit(AA) and touched the man’s tongue. 34 He looked up to heaven(AB) and with a deep sigh(AC) said to him, “Ephphatha!” (which means “Be opened!”). 35 At this, the man’s ears were opened, his tongue was loosened and he began to speak plainly.(AD)

36 Jesus commanded them not to tell anyone.(AE) But the more he did so, the more they kept talking about it. 37 People were overwhelmed with amazement. “He has done everything well,” they said. “He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak.”
