Jesus Rejected at Nazareth(A)

Then (B)He went out from there and came to His own country, and His disciples followed Him. And when the Sabbath had come, He began to teach in the synagogue. And many hearing Him were (C)astonished, saying, (D)“Where did this Man get these things? And what wisdom is this which is given to Him, that such mighty works are performed by His hands! Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and (E)brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us?” So they (F)were offended at Him.

But Jesus said to them, (G)“A prophet is not without honor except in his own country, among his own relatives, and in his own house.” (H)Now He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them. And (I)He marveled because of their unbelief. (J)Then He went about the villages in a circuit, teaching.

A Prophet Without Honor(A)

Jesus left there and went to his hometown,(B) accompanied by his disciples. When the Sabbath came,(C) he began to teach in the synagogue,(D) and many who heard him were amazed.(E)

“Where did this man get these things?” they asked. “What’s this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing? Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son and the brother of James, Joseph,[a] Judas and Simon?(F) Aren’t his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.(G)

Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own town, among his relatives and in his own home.”(H) He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on(I) a few sick people and heal them. He was amazed at their lack of faith.

The Compassion of Jesus(A)

35 Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, (B)teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and every disease [a]among the people. 36 (C)But when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion for them, because they were [b]weary and scattered, (D)like sheep having no shepherd. 37 Then He said to His disciples, (E)“The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. 38 (F)Therefore pray the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.”

The Workers Are Few

35 Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness.(A) 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them,(B) because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.(C) 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest(D) is plentiful but the workers are few.(E) 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”

Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, (A)who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother; Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and [a]Lebbaeus, whose surname was Thaddaeus; (B)Simon the [b]Cananite, and Judas (C)Iscariot, who also betrayed Him.

Sending Out the Twelve(D)

These twelve Jesus sent out and commanded them, saying: (E)“Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter a city of (F)the Samaritans. (G)But go rather to the (H)lost sheep of the house of Israel. (I)And as you go, preach, saying, (J)‘The kingdom of heaven [c]is at hand.’ Heal the sick, [d]cleanse the lepers, [e]raise the dead, cast out demons. (K)Freely you have received, freely give. (L)Provide neither gold nor silver nor (M)copper in your money belts, 10 nor bag for your journey, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor staffs; (N)for a worker is worthy of his food.

11 (O)“Now whatever city or town you enter, inquire who in it is worthy, and stay there till you go out. 12 And when you go into a household, greet it. 13 (P)If the household is worthy, let your peace come upon it. (Q)But if it is not worthy, let your peace return to you. 14 (R)And whoever will not receive you nor hear your words, when you depart from that house or city, (S)shake off the dust from your feet. 15 Assuredly, I say to you, (T)it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah in the day of judgment than for that city!

Persecutions Are Coming(U)

16 (V)“Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. (W)Therefore be wise as serpents and (X)harmless[f] as doves. 17 But beware of men, for (Y)they will deliver you up to councils and (Z)scourge you in their synagogues. 18 (AA)You will be brought before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles. 19 (AB)But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. For (AC)it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak; 20 (AD)for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.

21 (AE)“Now brother will deliver up brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death. 22 And (AF)you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. (AG)But he who endures to the end will be saved. 23 (AH)When they persecute you in this city, flee to another. For assuredly, I say to you, you will not have (AI)gone through the cities of Israel (AJ)before the Son of Man comes.

24 (AK)“A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. 25 It is enough for a disciple that he be like his teacher, and a servant like his master. If (AL)they have called the master of the house [g]Beelzebub, how much more will they call those of his household! 26 Therefore do not fear them. (AM)For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known.

Jesus Teaches the Fear of God(AN)

27 “Whatever I tell you in the dark, (AO)speak in the light; and what you hear in the ear, preach on the housetops. 28 (AP)And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather (AQ)fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in [h]hell. 29 Are not two (AR)sparrows sold for a [i]copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will. 30 (AS)But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.

Confess Christ Before Men(AT)

32 (AU)“Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, (AV)him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. 33 (AW)But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.

Christ Brings Division(AX)

34 (AY)“Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. 35 For I have come to (AZ)‘set[j] a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’; 36 and (BA)‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’ 37 (BB)He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. 38 (BC)And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. 39 (BD)He who finds his life will lose it, and he who loses his life for My sake will find it.

A Cup of Cold Water(BE)

40 (BF)“He who receives you receives Me, and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me. 41 (BG)He who receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward. And he who receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward. 42 (BH)And whoever gives one of these little ones only a cup of cold water in the name of a disciple, assuredly, I say to you, he shall by no means lose his reward.”

21 (A)Then an opportune day came when Herod (B)on his birthday gave a feast for his nobles, the high officers, and the chief men of Galilee. 22 And when Herodias’ daughter herself came in and danced, and pleased Herod and those who sat with him, the king said to the girl, “Ask me whatever you want, and I will give it to you.” 23 He also swore to her, (C)“Whatever you ask me, I will give you, up to half my kingdom.”

24 So she went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask?”

And she said, “The head of John the Baptist!”

25 Immediately she came in with haste to the king and asked, saying, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”

26 (D)And the king was exceedingly sorry; yet, because of the oaths and because of those who sat with him, he did not want to refuse her. 27 Immediately the king sent an executioner and commanded his head to be brought. And he went and beheaded him in prison, 28 brought his head on a platter, and gave it to the girl; and the girl gave it to her mother.

21 Finally the opportune time came. On his birthday Herod gave a banquet(A) for his high officials and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee.(B) 22 When the daughter of[a] Herodias came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his dinner guests.

24 She went out and said to her mother, “What shall I ask for?”

“The head of John the Baptist,” she answered.

25 At once the girl hurried in to the king with the request: “I want you to give me right now the head of John the Baptist on a platter.”

26 The king was greatly distressed, but because of his oaths and his dinner guests, he did not want to refuse her. 27 So he immediately sent an executioner with orders to bring John’s head. The man went, beheaded John in the prison, 28 and brought back his head on a platter. He presented it to the girl, and she gave it to her mother.
