The Rich Young Ruler

17 (A)And as He was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to Him and (B)knelt before Him, and began asking Him, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to (C)inherit eternal life?” 18 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone. 19 You know the commandments, ‘(D)Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’” 20 And he said to Him, “Teacher, I have kept (E)all these things from my youth up.” 21 And looking at him, Jesus loved him and said to him, “One thing you lack: go and sell all you possess and give to the poor, and you will have (F)treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” 22 But at these words [a]he was saddened, and he went away grieving, for he was one who owned much property.

23 And Jesus, looking around, *said to His disciples, (G)How hard it will be for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God!” 24 And the disciples (H)were amazed at His words. But Jesus *answered again and *said to them, “Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25 (I)It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” 26 And they were even more astonished, saying to [b]Him, “[c]Then who can be saved?” 27 Looking at them, Jesus *said, (J)With people it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God.”

28 (K)Peter began to say to Him, “Behold, we have left everything and followed You.” 29 Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, (L)there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or farms, for My sake and for the gospel’s sake, 30 [d]except one who will receive one hundred times as much now in [e]the present age—houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and farms, along with persecutions—and in (M)the age to come, eternal life. 31 But (N)many who are first will be last, and the last, first.”

The Rich Young Ruler

16 (A)And behold, someone came to Him and said, “Teacher, what good thing shall I do that I may have (B)eternal life?” 17 And He said to him, “Why are you asking Me about what is good? There is only One who is good; but (C)if you wish to enter into life, keep the commandments.” 18 Then he *said to Him, “Which ones?” And Jesus said, (D)You shall not murder; You shall not commit adultery; You shall not steal; You shall not bear false witness; 19 (E)Honor your father and mother; and (F)You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 20 The young man *said to Him, “All these things I have kept; what am I still lacking?” 21 Jesus said to him, “If you wish to be [a]complete, go and (G)sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have (H)treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” 22 But when the young man heard this statement, he went away grieving; for he was one who owned much property.

23 And Jesus said to His disciples, “Truly I say to you, (I)it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24 And again I say to you, (J)it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” 25 And when the disciples heard this, they were very astonished and said, “Then who can be saved?” 26 And looking at them Jesus said to them, (K)With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

Many Who Are First Will Be Last

27 Then Peter answered and said to Him, “Behold, we have left everything and followed You; what then will there be for us?” 28 And Jesus said to them, “Truly I say to you, that you who have followed Me, in the regeneration when (L)the Son of Man will sit on [b]His glorious throne, (M)you also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. 29 And (N)everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother [c]or children or farms for My name’s sake, will receive [d]one hundred times as much, and will inherit eternal life. 30 (O)But many who are first will be last; and the last, first.

18 (A)And a ruler questioned Him, saying, “Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 19 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call Me good? And come, follow Me.” 23 But when he heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich. 24 And Jesus looked at him and said, (E)How hard it is for those who are wealthy to enter the kingdom of God! 25 For (F)it is easier for a camel to [a]go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.” 26 And those who heard it said, “Then who can be saved?” 27 But He said, (G)The things that are impossible with people are possible with God.”

28 And Peter said, “Behold, (H)we have left all that is our own and followed You.” 29 And He said to them, “Truly I say to you, (I)there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30 who will not receive many times more at this time and in (J)the age to come, eternal life.”
