The Rich Young Man

17 (A)And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and (B)knelt before him and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to (C)inherit eternal life?” 18 And Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: (D)‘Do not murder, Do not commit adultery, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Do not defraud, Honor your father and mother.’” 20 And he said to him, “Teacher, (E)all these I have kept from my youth.” 21 And Jesus, (F)looking at him, (G)loved him, and said to him, “You lack one thing: go, (H)sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have (I)treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.” 22 (J)Disheartened by the saying, he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.

23 And Jesus (K)looked around and said to his disciples, (L)“How difficult it will be for those who have wealth to enter (M)the kingdom of God!” 24 And the disciples (N)were amazed at his words. But Jesus said to them again, (O)“Children, (P)how difficult it is[a] to enter (Q)the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter (R)the kingdom of God.” 26 And they were exceedingly astonished, and said to him,[b] “Then who can be saved?” 27 Jesus (S)looked at them and said, (T)“With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God.” 28 Peter began to say to him, “See, (U)we have left everything and followed you.” 29 Jesus said, “Truly, I say to you, (V)there is no one who has left house or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or lands, for my sake and (W)for the gospel, 30 who will not receive a hundredfold (X)now in this time, houses and brothers and sisters and mothers and children and lands, (Y)with persecutions, and in (Z)the age to come eternal life. 31 But (AA)many who are first will be last, and the last first.”

Jesus Foretells His Death a Third Time

32 (AB)And they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and (AC)Jesus was walking ahead of them. And (AD)they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. And taking the twelve again, he began to tell them what was to happen to him, 33 saying, “See, (AE)we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will (AF)condemn him to death and (AG)deliver him over to the Gentiles. 34 And they will (AH)mock him and (AI)spit on him, and flog him and kill him. And (AJ)after three days he will rise.”

The Request of James and John

35 (AK)And James and John, (AL)the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to him, “Teacher, we want you to do for us (AM)whatever we ask of you.” 36 And he said to them, (AN)“What do you want me to do for you?” 37 And they said to him, “Grant us (AO)to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, (AP)in your glory.” 38 Jesus said to them, (AQ)“You do not know what you are asking. Are you able (AR)to drink the cup that I drink, or (AS)to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” 39 And they said to him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, (AT)“The cup that I drink (AU)you will drink, and with the baptism with which I am baptized, (AV)you will be baptized, 40 but to sit at my right hand or at my left is not mine to grant, (AW)but it is for those for whom it has been (AX)prepared.” 41 And when the ten heard it, they began to be indignant at James and John. 42 (AY)And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles (AZ)lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. 43 But (BA)it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant,[c] 44 and whoever would be first among you must be (BB)slave[d] of all. 45 For even the Son of Man came not to be served but (BC)to serve, and (BD)to give his life as a ransom for (BE)many.”

Jesus Heals Blind Bartimaeus

46 (BF)And they came to Jericho. And (BG)as he was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a great crowd, Bartimaeus, (BH)a blind beggar, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the roadside. 47 And when he heard that it was (BI)Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” 48 And many (BJ)rebuked him, telling him to be silent. But he cried out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!” 49 And Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.” And they called the blind man, saying to him, (BK)“Take heart. Get up; he is calling you.” 50 And throwing off his (BL)cloak, he sprang up and came to Jesus. 51 And Jesus said to him, (BM)“What do you want me to do for you?” And the blind man said to him, (BN)“Rabbi, let me recover my sight.” 52 And Jesus said to him, “Go your way; (BO)your faith has (BP)made you well.” And immediately he recovered his sight and followed him on the way.

The Triumphal Entry

11 (BQ)Now when they drew near to Jerusalem, to (BR)Bethphage and Bethany, at (BS)the Mount of Olives, Jesus[e] sent (BT)two of his disciples and said to them, “Go into the village in front of you, and immediately as you enter it you will find a colt tied, (BU)on which no one has ever sat. Untie it and bring it. If anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord has need of it and will send it back here immediately.’” And they went away and found a colt tied at a door outside in the street, and they untied it. And some of those standing there said to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” And they told them what Jesus had said, and they let them go. And they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks on it, and he sat on it. And many (BV)spread their cloaks on the road, and others spread leafy branches that they had cut from the fields. And those who went before and those who followed were shouting, (BW)“Hosanna! (BX)Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! 10 Blessed is (BY)the coming (BZ)kingdom of (CA)our father (CB)David! (CC)Hosanna (CD)in the highest!”

11 (CE)And he entered Jerusalem and went into the temple. And when he had looked around at everything, as it was already late, (CF)he went out to Bethany with the twelve.

Jesus Curses the Fig Tree

12 (CG)On the following day, when they came from Bethany, (CH)he was hungry. 13 (CI)And seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to see if he could find anything on it. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves, for (CJ)it was not the season for figs. 14 And he said to it, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard it.

Jesus Cleanses the Temple

15 (CK)And they came to Jerusalem. And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold and those who bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of (CL)the money-changers and the seats of those who sold (CM)pigeons. 16 And he would not allow anyone to carry anything through the temple. 17 And he was teaching them and saying to them, “Is it not written, (CN)‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But (CO)you have made it a den of robbers.” 18 And the chief priests and the scribes heard it and (CP)were seeking a way to destroy him, for they feared him, because (CQ)all the crowd was astonished at his teaching. 19 (CR)And when evening came they[f] went out of the city.

The Lesson from the Withered Fig Tree

20 (CS)As they passed by in the morning, they saw the fig tree withered away to its roots. 21 And Peter remembered and said to him, (CT)“Rabbi, look! The fig tree that you cursed has withered.” 22 And Jesus answered them, “Have (CU)faith in God. 23 (CV)Truly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, (CW)‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ and does not (CX)doubt in his heart, but (CY)believes that what he says will come to pass, it will be done for him. 24 Therefore I tell you, (CZ)whatever you ask in prayer, (DA)believe that you (DB)have received[g] it, and it will be yours. 25 And whenever (DC)you stand praying, (DD)forgive, (DE)if you have anything against anyone, so that (DF)your Father also who is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses.”[h]

The Authority of Jesus Challenged

27 (DG)And they came again to Jerusalem. And as he was walking in the temple, the chief priests and the scribes and the elders came to him, 28 and they said to him, (DH)“By what authority are you doing these things, or who gave you this authority to do them?” 29 Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one question; answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I do these things. 30 Was the baptism of John (DI)from heaven or from man? Answer me.” 31 And they discussed it with one another, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will say, (DJ)‘Why then did you not believe him?’ 32 But shall we say, ‘From man’?”—(DK)they were afraid of the people, for they all held that John really was (DL)a prophet. 33 So they answered Jesus, “We do not know.” And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

The Parable of the Tenants

12 (DM)And he began to speak to them in parables. “A man planted (DN)a vineyard (DO)and put a fence around it and dug a pit for the winepress and built a tower, and (DP)leased it to tenants and (DQ)went into another country. When the season came, he sent a servant[i] to the tenants to get from them some of the fruit of the vineyard. (DR)And they took him and beat him and sent him away empty-handed. (DS)Again (DT)he sent to them another servant, and (DU)they struck him on the head and (DV)treated him shamefully. (DW)And he sent another, and him they killed. And so with many others: some they beat, and some they killed. He had still one other, (DX)a beloved son. (DY)Finally he sent him to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ But those tenants said to one another, (DZ)‘This is the heir. Come, (EA)let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ And they took him and killed him and (EB)threw him out of the vineyard. What will the owner of the vineyard do? (EC)He will (ED)come and destroy the tenants and (EE)give the vineyard to others. 10 (EF)Have you not read (EG)this Scripture:

(EH)“‘The stone that the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone;[j]
11 this was the Lord's doing,
and it is marvelous in our eyes’?”

12 And (EI)they were seeking to arrest him (EJ)but feared the people, for they perceived that he had told the parable against them. So they (EK)left him and went away.

Paying Taxes to Caesar

13 (EL)And they sent to him some of (EM)the Pharisees and some of (EN)the Herodians, to (EO)trap him in his talk. 14 And they came and said to him, “Teacher, (EP)we know that you are true and do not care about anyone's opinion. For (EQ)you are not swayed by appearances,[k] but truly teach (ER)the way of God. Is it lawful to pay (ES)taxes to (ET)Caesar, or not? Should we pay them, or should we not?” 15 But, knowing (EU)their hypocrisy, he said to them, “Why (EV)put me to the test? Bring me (EW)a denarius[l] and let me look at it.” 16 And they brought one. And he said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” They said to him, “Caesar's.” 17 Jesus said to them, (EX)“Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's.” And they marveled at him.

The Rich and the Kingdom of God(A)

17 As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees(B) before him. “Good teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”(C)

18 “Why do you call me good?” Jesus answered. “No one is good—except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: ‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, you shall not defraud, honor your father and mother.’[a](D)

20 “Teacher,” he declared, “all these I have kept since I was a boy.”

21 Jesus looked at him and loved him. “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor,(E) and you will have treasure in heaven.(F) Then come, follow me.”(G)

22 At this the man’s face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.

23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, “How hard it is for the rich(H) to enter the kingdom of God!”

24 The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, “Children, how hard it is[b] to enter the kingdom of God!(I) 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for someone who is rich to enter the kingdom of God.”(J)

26 The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, “Who then can be saved?”

27 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.”(K)

28 Then Peter spoke up, “We have left everything to follow you!”(L)

29 “Truly I tell you,” Jesus replied, “no one who has left home or brothers or sisters or mother or father or children or fields for me and the gospel 30 will fail to receive a hundred times as much(M) in this present age: homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children and fields—along with persecutions—and in the age to come(N) eternal life.(O) 31 But many who are first will be last, and the last first.”(P)

Jesus Predicts His Death a Third Time(Q)

32 They were on their way up to Jerusalem, with Jesus leading the way, and the disciples were astonished, while those who followed were afraid. Again he took the Twelve(R) aside and told them what was going to happen to him. 33 “We are going up to Jerusalem,”(S) he said, “and the Son of Man(T) will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law.(U) They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles, 34 who will mock him and spit on him, flog him(V) and kill him.(W) Three days later(X) he will rise.”(Y)

The Request of James and John(Z)

35 Then James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. “Teacher,” they said, “we want you to do for us whatever we ask.”

36 “What do you want me to do for you?” he asked.

37 They replied, “Let one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.”(AA)

38 “You don’t know what you are asking,”(AB) Jesus said. “Can you drink the cup(AC) I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?”(AD)

39 “We can,” they answered.

Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with,(AE) 40 but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared.”

41 When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John. 42 Jesus called them together and said, “You know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,(AF) 44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve,(AG) and to give his life as a ransom for many.”(AH)

Blind Bartimaeus Receives His Sight(AI)

46 Then they came to Jericho. As Jesus and his disciples, together with a large crowd, were leaving the city, a blind man, Bartimaeus (which means “son of Timaeus”), was sitting by the roadside begging. 47 When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth,(AJ) he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David,(AK) have mercy on me!”

48 Many rebuked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him.”

So they called to the blind man, “Cheer up! On your feet! He’s calling you.” 50 Throwing his cloak aside, he jumped to his feet and came to Jesus.

51 “What do you want me to do for you?” Jesus asked him.

The blind man said, “Rabbi,(AL) I want to see.”

52 “Go,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.”(AM) Immediately he received his sight and followed(AN) Jesus along the road.

Jesus Comes to Jerusalem as King(AO)(AP)

11 As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage and Bethany(AQ) at the Mount of Olives,(AR) Jesus sent two of his disciples, saying to them, “Go to the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden.(AS) Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ say, ‘The Lord needs it and will send it back here shortly.’”

They went and found a colt outside in the street, tied at a doorway.(AT) As they untied it, some people standing there asked, “What are you doing, untying that colt?” They answered as Jesus had told them to, and the people let them go. When they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their cloaks over it, he sat on it. Many people spread their cloaks on the road, while others spread branches they had cut in the fields. Those who went ahead and those who followed shouted,

“Hosanna![c]

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!”[d](AU)

10 “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David!”

“Hosanna in the highest heaven!”(AV)

11 Jesus entered Jerusalem and went into the temple courts. He looked around at everything, but since it was already late, he went out to Bethany with the Twelve.(AW)

Jesus Curses a Fig Tree and Clears the Temple Courts(AX)(AY)(AZ)

12 The next day as they were leaving Bethany, Jesus was hungry. 13 Seeing in the distance a fig tree in leaf, he went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves, because it was not the season for figs.(BA) 14 Then he said to the tree, “May no one ever eat fruit from you again.” And his disciples heard him say it.

15 On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple courts and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves, 16 and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts. 17 And as he taught them, he said, “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’[e]?(BB) But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’[f](BC)

18 The chief priests and the teachers of the law heard this and began looking for a way to kill him, for they feared him,(BD) because the whole crowd was amazed at his teaching.(BE)

19 When evening came, Jesus and his disciples[g] went out of the city.(BF)

20 In the morning, as they went along, they saw the fig tree withered from the roots. 21 Peter remembered and said to Jesus, “Rabbi,(BG) look! The fig tree you cursed has withered!”

22 “Have faith in God,” Jesus answered. 23 “Truly[h] I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.(BH) 24 Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.(BI) 25 And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.”(BJ) [26] [i]

The Authority of Jesus Questioned(BK)

27 They arrived again in Jerusalem, and while Jesus was walking in the temple courts, the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders came to him. 28 “By what authority are you doing these things?” they asked. “And who gave you authority to do this?”

29 Jesus replied, “I will ask you one question. Answer me, and I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. 30 John’s baptism—was it from heaven, or of human origin? Tell me!”

31 They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Then why didn’t you believe him?’ 32 But if we say, ‘Of human origin’ …” (They feared the people, for everyone held that John really was a prophet.)(BL)

33 So they answered Jesus, “We don’t know.”

Jesus said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”

The Parable of the Tenants(BM)

12 Jesus then began to speak to them in parables: “A man planted a vineyard.(BN) He put a wall around it, dug a pit for the winepress and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to some farmers and moved to another place. At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants to collect from them some of the fruit of the vineyard. But they seized him, beat him and sent him away empty-handed. Then he sent another servant to them; they struck this man on the head and treated him shamefully. He sent still another, and that one they killed. He sent many others; some of them they beat, others they killed.

“He had one left to send, a son, whom he loved. He sent him last of all,(BO) saying, ‘They will respect my son.’

“But the tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ So they took him and killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.

“What then will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others. 10 Haven’t you read this passage of Scripture:

“‘The stone the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone;(BP)
11 the Lord has done this,
and it is marvelous in our eyes’[j]?”(BQ)

12 Then the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders looked for a way to arrest him because they knew he had spoken the parable against them. But they were afraid of the crowd;(BR) so they left him and went away.(BS)

Paying the Imperial Tax to Caesar(BT)

13 Later they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians(BU) to Jesus to catch him(BV) in his words. 14 They came to him and said, “Teacher, we know that you are a man of integrity. You aren’t swayed by others, because you pay no attention to who they are; but you teach the way of God in accordance with the truth. Is it right to pay the imperial tax[k] to Caesar or not? 15 Should we pay or shouldn’t we?”

But Jesus knew their hypocrisy. “Why are you trying to trap me?” he asked. “Bring me a denarius and let me look at it.” 16 They brought the coin, and he asked them, “Whose image is this? And whose inscription?”

“Caesar’s,” they replied.

17 Then Jesus said to them, “Give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s and to God what is God’s.”(BW)

And they were amazed at him.
