12 Nagsimulang (B) magsalita si Jesus sa mga tao sa pamamagitan ng mga talinghaga. “May isang taong nagtanim ng mga ubas sa kanyang bukirin. ‘Ang batong itinakwil ng mga tagapagtayo ng bahay,
    ang siyang naging batong panulukan.
11 Ito'y gawa ng Panginoon,

12 Nang mabatid nilang sinabi ni Jesus ang talinghagang ito laban sa kanila, pinagsikapan nilang siya'y dakpin. Ngunit natakot sila sa maraming tao, kaya umalis sila at iniwan si Jesus.

Ang Pagbabayad ng Buwis(D)

13 Pinapunta nila kay Jesus ang ilan sa mga Fariseo at sa mga kakampi ni Herodes upang siluin siya sa kanyang sinasabi. 14 Lumapit sila sa kanya at sinabi, “Guro, alam naming tapat ka at walang kinikilingan. Hindi ka tumitingin sa panlabas na anyo ng tao at itinuturo mo ang daan ng Diyos batay sa katotohanan. Tama bang magbayad ng buwis sa Emperador[a] o hindi? Dapat ba kaming magbayad o hindi?” 15 Dahil batid ni Jesus ang kanilang pagkukunwari ay sinabi niya sa kanila, “Bakit ninyo ako sinusubukan? Abutan ninyo ako ng isang salaping pilak at titingnan ko.” 16 Inabutan nga nila si Jesus ng salaping pilak. “Kaninong larawan at pangalan ang naririto?” tanong ni Jesus. “Sa Emperador,” sagot nila. 17 Sinabi ni Jesus, “Ibigay ninyo sa Emperador ang sa Emperador at sa Diyos ang sa Diyos.” At sila'y namangha sa kanya.

18 Lumapit (F) kay Jesus ang mga Saduceo, mga taong nagtuturo na walang pagkabuhay na muli, at nagtanong sila sa kanya, 19 “Guro, (G) isinulat ni Moises para sa amin na kung mamatay ang isang lalaki at naiwang walang anak ang kanyang asawa, ang kapatid na lalaki ng namatay ay dapat pakasal sa babae upang magkaanak siya para sa yumao. 20 Mayroong pitong magkakapatid na lalaki. Nag-asawa ang panganay at namatay na walang anak. 21 Pinakasalan ng pangalawa ang babae subalit namatay ring walang naiwang anak. Ganoon din ang nangyari sa pangatlo. 22 Walang ni isa man sa pitong magkakapatid ang nagkaanak sa kanya. Sa kahuli-hulihan, ang babae naman ang namatay. 23 Sa muling pagkabuhay, (kapag sila'y muling nabuhay)[b] sino sa pitong magkakapatid ang magiging asawa ng babae yamang napangasawa niya silang lahat?” 24 Sumagot si Jesus, “Nagkakamali kayo! At ito ang dahilan: hindi ninyo nauunawaan ang mga kasulatan ni ang kapangyarihan ng Diyos. 25 Sa muling pagkabuhay ng mga tao mula sa kamatayan ay wala nang pag-aasawa. Sa halip, sila'y magiging katulad ng mga anghel sa langit. 26 Tungkol (H) naman sa muling pagbangon ng mga patay, hindi ba ninyo nabasa sa aklat ni Moises, sa bahagi tungkol sa mababang punong nagliliyab na doon ay sinabi ng Diyos sa kanya, ‘Ako ang Diyos ni Abraham, ang Diyos ni Isaac, at ang Diyos ni Jacob’? 27 Hindi siya Diyos ng mga patay, kundi ng mga buháy! Maling-mali kayo!”

Ang Pangunahing Utos(I)

28 Lumapit ang isang tagapagturo ng Kautusan at narinig ang kanilang pagtatalo. Nakita niyang mahusay ang pagsagot ni Jesus sa mga Saduceo, kaya siya ay nagtanong, “Ano ang pangunahing utos sa lahat?” 29 Sumagot (J) si Jesus, “Ang pangunahing utos ay ito: ‘Makinig ka, Israel! Ang Panginoon na ating Diyos ay iisang Panginoon. 30 Ibigin mo ang Panginoon mong Diyos nang iyong buong puso, nang iyong buong kaluluwa, nang iyong buong pag-iisip, at nang iyong buong lakas.’ 31 Ang (K) pangalawa ay ito, ‘Ibigin mo ang iyong kapwa gaya ng pag-ibig mo sa iyong sarili.’ Wala nang ibang utos na hihigit pa sa mga ito.” 32 Sinabi (L) sa kanya ng tagapagturo ng Kautusan, “Tama ka, Guro. Batay sa katotohanan ang sinabi mo na iisa nga ang ating Panginoon at wala nang iba maliban sa kanya. 33 Ang (M) umibig sa kanya nang buong puso, buong pagkaunawa, buong lakas, at ang umibig sa kapwa gaya ng pag-ibig sa sarili, ay higit kaysa lahat ng mga handog na sinusunog at iba pang mga hain.” 34 Nang (N) makita ni Jesus na matalinong sumagot ang lalaki, sinabi niya sa kanya, “Hindi ka malayo sa kaharian ng Diyos.” Mula noon, wala nang nangahas na magtanong sa kanya.

35 Habang nagtuturo si Jesus sa templo, nagtanong siya, “Bakit sinasabi ng mga tagapagturo ng Kautusan na ang Cristo ay anak ni David? 36 Si (P) David mismo ang nagpahayag sa patnubay ng Banal na Espiritu,

‘Sinabi ng Panginoon sa aking Panginoon,
“Maupo ka sa aking kanan,
    hanggang mailagay ko sa ilalim ng iyong mga paa ang iyong mga kaaway.” ’

37 Mismong si David ay tumawag sa kanya na Panginoon, kaya't paano siya magiging anak ni David?” Masayang nakinig sa kanya ang napakaraming tao.

Babala Laban sa mga Tagapagturo ng Kautusan(Q)

38 Sinabi niya habang siya'y nagtuturo, “Mag-ingat kayo sa mga tagapagturo ng Kautusan! Mahilig silang maglakad-lakad na suot ang mahahabang damit, at gustung-gusto nilang pagpugayan sila sa mga pamilihan. 39 Mahilig din silang maupo sa mga pangunahing upuan sa mga sinagoga, at mga upuang pandangal sa mga handaan. 40 Inuubos nila ang kabuhayan ng mga babaing balo at nagkukunwaring banal sa pamamagitan ng kanilang mahahabang pagdarasal. Mas mabigat na parusa ang tatanggapin ng mga ito.”

Ang Kaloob ng Babaing Balo(R)

41 Naupo si Jesus sa tapat ng kabang-yaman ng templo at pinagmasdan kung paano naghuhulog ang mga tao ng kanilang handog na salapi. Maraming mayayaman ang naghuhulog ng malalaking halaga. 42 Dumating ang isang dukhang babaing balo at naghulog ng dalawang kusing, katumbas ng isang pera. 43 Tinawag niya ang kanyang mga alagad at sinabi, “Katotohanan ang sinasabi ko, ang dukhang balong ito ay naghulog ng higit kaysa lahat ng mga naghulog sa kabang-yaman. 44 Sapagkat lahat ay nagbigay mula sa kanilang kasaganaan, ngunit ang babaing ito, sa kabila ng kanyang kahirapan, ay nagbigay ng kanyang buong kabuhayan.”

The Parable of the Tenant Farmers in the Vineyard

12 And he began to speak to them in parables: “A man planted a vineyard, and put a fence around it, and dug a trough for the winepress, and built a watchtower, and leased it to tenant farmers, and went on a journey. And he sent a slave to the tenant farmers at the proper time, so that he could collect some of the fruit of the vineyard from the tenant farmers. And they seized him and[a] beat him[b] and sent him[c] away empty-handed. And again he sent to them another slave, and that one they struck on the head and dishonored. And he sent another, and that one they killed. And he sent[d] many others, some of whom they beat and some of whom they killed. He had one more, a beloved son. Last of all he sent him to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ But those tenant farmers said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and the inheritance will be ours!’ And they seized and[e] killed him and threw him out of the vineyard. What[f] will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the tenant farmers and give the vineyard to others. 10 Have you not read this scripture:

‘The stone which the builders rejected,
    this has become the cornerstone.[g]
11 This came about from the Lord,
    and it is marvelous in our eyes’?”[h]

12 And they were seeking to arrest him, and they were afraid of the crowd, because they knew that he had told the parable with reference to them. And they left him and[i] went away.

Paying Taxes to Caesar

13 And they sent some of the Pharisees and the Herodians to him so that they could catch him unawares in a statement. 14 And when they[j] came, they said to him, “Teacher, we know that you are truthful and you do not care what anyone thinks,[k] because you do not regard the opinion of people[l] but teach the way of God in truth. Is it permitted to pay taxes to Caesar or not? Should we pay or should we not pay?” 15 But because he[m] knew their hypocrisy, he said to them, “Why are you testing me? Bring me a denarius so that I can look at it!”[n] 16 So they brought one.[o] And he said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?” And they said to him, “Caesar’s.” 17 And Jesus said to them, “Give to Caesar the things of Caesar, and to God the things of God!” And they were utterly amazed at him.

A Question About Marriage and the Resurrection

18 And Sadducees—who say there is no resurrection—came up to him and began to ask[p] him, saying, 19 “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if someone’s brother dies and he leaves behind a wife and does not leave a child, that his brother should take the wife and father[q] descendants for his brother. 20 There were seven brothers, and the first took a wife. And when he[r] died, he did not leave descendants. 21 And the second took her, and he died without leaving descendants. And the third likewise. 22 And the seven did not leave descendants. Last of all the woman also died. 23 In the resurrection, when they rise, whose[s] wife will she be? For the seven had her as wife. 24 Jesus said to them, “Are you not deceived because of this, because you[t] do not know the scriptures or the power of God? 25 For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. 26 Now concerning the dead, that they are raised, have you not read in the book of Moses in the passage about the bush[u] how God spoke to him, saying, ‘I am the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob’?[v] 27 He is not God of the dead, but of the living. You are very much mistaken!”

The Greatest Commandment

28 And one of the scribes came up and[w] heard them debating. When he[x] saw that he answered them well, he asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?” 29 Jesus answered, “The most important is, ‘Listen, Israel! The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 30 And you shall love the Lord your God from your whole heart and from your whole soul and from your whole mind and from your whole strength.’[y] 31 The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’[z] There is no other commandment greater than these.” 32 And the scribe said to him, “That is true, Teacher. You have said correctly[aa] that he is one and there is no other except him. 33 And to love him from your[ab] whole heart and from your[ac] whole understanding and from your[ad] whole strength, and to love your[ae] neighbor as yourself, is much more than all whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” 34 And Jesus, when he[af] saw that he had answered thoughtfully, said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And no one dared to put a question to him any longer.

David’s Son and Lord

35 And continuing, Jesus said while[ag] teaching in the temple courts,[ah] “How can the scribes say that the Christ is David’s son? 36 David himself said by the Holy Spirit,

‘The Lord said to my Lord,
    “Sit at my right hand,
until I put your enemies
    under your feet.”’[ai]

37 David himself calls him ‘Lord,’ and how is he his son?” And the large crowd was listening to him gladly.

Warning to Beware of the Scribes

38 And in his teaching he said, “Beware of the scribes, who like walking around in long robes and greetings in the marketplaces 39 and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets, 40 who devour the houses of widows and pray lengthy prayers for the sake of appearance. These will receive more severe condemnation!”

A Poor Widow’s Offering

41 And he sat down opposite the contribution box and[aj] was observing how the crowd was putting coins into the contribution box. And many rich people were putting in many coins.[ak] 42 And one poor widow came and[al] put in two small copper coins[am] (that is, a penny).[an] 43 And summoning his disciples, he said to them, “Truly I say to you that this poor widow put in more than all those who put offerings[ao] into the contribution box. 44 For they all contributed[ap] out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in everything she had, her whole means of subsistence.”

A Story about a Vineyard(A)

12 Then, using this illustration, Yeshua spoke to them. He said, “A man planted a vineyard. He put a wall around it, made a vat for the winepress, and built a watchtower. Then he leased it to vineyard workers and went on a trip.

“At the right time he sent a servant to the workers to collect from them a share of the grapes from the vineyard. The workers took the servant, beat him, and sent him back with nothing. So the man sent another servant to them. They hit the servant on the head and treated him shamefully. The man sent another, and they killed that servant. Then he sent many other servants. Some of these they beat, and others they killed.

“He had one more person to send. That person was his son, whom he loved. Finally, he sent his son to them. He thought, ‘They will respect my son.’

“But those workers said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ So they took him, killed him, and threw him out of the vineyard.

“What will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the workers and give the vineyard to others. 10 Have you never read the Scripture passage:

‘The stone that the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone.
11 The Lord has done this,
    and it is amazing for us to see’?”

12 They wanted to arrest him but were afraid of the crowd. They knew that he had directed this illustration at them. So they left him alone and went away.

A Question about Taxes(B)

13 The leaders sent some of the Pharisees and some of Herod’s followers to Yeshua. They wanted to trap him into saying the wrong thing. 14 When they came to him, they said, “Teacher, we know that you tell the truth. You don’t favor individuals because of who they are. Rather, you teach the way of God truthfully. Is it right to pay taxes to the emperor or not? Should we pay taxes or not?”

15 Yeshua recognized their hypocrisy, so he asked them, “Why do you test me? Bring me a coin so that I can look at it.”

16 They brought a coin. He said to them, “Whose face and name is this?”

They told him, “The emperor’s.”

17 Yeshua said to them, “Give the emperor what belongs to the emperor, and give God what belongs to God.”

They were surprised at his reply.

The Dead Come Back to Life(C)

18 Some Sadducees, who say that people will never come back to life, came to Yeshua. They asked him, 19 “Teacher, Moses wrote for us, ‘If a man dies and leaves a wife but no child, his brother should marry his widow and have children for his brother.’ 20 There were seven brothers. The first got married and died without having children. 21 The second married her and died without having children. So did the third. 22 None of the seven brothers had any children. Last of all, the woman died. 23 When the dead come back to life, whose wife will she be? The seven brothers had married her.”

24 Yeshua said to them, “Aren’t you mistaken because you don’t know the Scriptures or God’s power? 25 When the dead come back to life, they don’t marry. Rather, they are like the angels in heaven. 26 Haven’t you read in the book of Moses that the dead come back to life? It’s in the passage about the bush, where God said, ‘I am the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.’ 27 He’s not the God of the dead but of the living. You’re badly mistaken!”

Love God and Your Neighbor(D)

28 One of the experts in Moses’ Teachings went to Yeshua during the argument with the Sadducees. He saw how well Yeshua answered them, so he asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of them all?”

29 Yeshua answered, “The most important is, ‘Listen, Israel, the Lord our God is the only Lord. 30 So love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ 31 The second most important commandment is this: ‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these.”

32 The expert in Moses’ Teachings said to Yeshua, “Teacher, that was well said! You’ve told the truth that there is only one God and no other besides him! 33 To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding, with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as you love yourself is more important than all the burnt offerings and sacrifices.”

34 When Yeshua heard how wisely the man answered, he told the man, “You’re not too far from the kingdom of God.”

After that, no one dared to ask him another question.

How Can David’s Son Be David’s Lord?(E)

35 While Yeshua was teaching in the temple courtyard, he asked, “How can the experts in Moses’ Teachings say that the Messiah is David’s son? 36 David, guided by the Holy Spirit, said,

‘The Lord said to my Lord:
    “Take the highest position in heaven
        until I put your enemies under your control.” ’

37 David calls him Lord. So how can he be his son?”

Jesus Disapproves of the Example Set by the Experts in Moses’ Teachings(F)

The large crowd enjoyed listening to him. 38 As he taught, he said, “Watch out for the experts in Moses’ Teachings! They like to walk around in long robes, to be greeted in the marketplaces, 39 and to have the front seats in synagogues and the places of honor at dinners. 40 They rob widows by taking their houses and then say long prayers to make themselves look good. The experts in Moses’ Teachings will receive the most severe punishment.”

A Widow’s Contribution(G)

41 As Yeshua sat facing the temple offering box, he watched how much money people put into it. Many rich people put in large amounts. 42 A poor widow dropped in two small coins, worth less than a cent.

43 He called his disciples and said to them, “I can guarantee this truth: This poor widow has given more than all the others. 44 All of them have given what they could spare. But she, in her poverty, has given everything she had to live on.”
