^5 (A)“Behold, I will send you ^(B)Elijah the prophet ^(C)before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes.

¹⁷ and ^(A)he will go before him ^(B)in the spirit and power of Elijah, ^(C)to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and ^(D)the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, ^(E)to make ready for the Lord a people prepared.”

¹⁰ And the disciples asked him, “Then why do the scribes say ^(A)that first Elijah must come?” ¹¹ He answered, “Elijah does come, and ^(B)he will restore all things. ¹² But I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but ^(C)did to him whatever they pleased. ^(D)So also the Son of Man will certainly suffer at their hands.” ^13 (E)Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.

¹¹ And they asked him, “Why do the scribes say ^(A)that first Elijah must come?” ¹² And he said to them, “Elijah does come first ^(B)to restore all things. And ^(C)how is it written of the Son of Man that he should ^(D)suffer many things and ^(E)be treated with contempt? ¹³ But I tell you that Elijah has come, and ^(F)they did to him whatever they pleased, as it is written of him.”

^13 (A)For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John, ¹⁴ and if you are willing to accept it, he is ^(B)Elijah who is to come.

3 ^(A)“Behold, I send ^(B)my messenger, and ^(C)he will prepare the way before me. And the Lord ^(D)whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple; and ^(E)the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts.

²¹ And they asked him, “What then? ^(A)Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” “Are you ^(B)the Prophet?” And he answered, “No.”

^31 (A)The sun shall be turned to darkness, ^(B)and the moon to blood, ^(C)before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes.
