² But ^(A)who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For ^(B)he is like a refiner's fire and like fullers' soap.

⁴ when ^(A)the Lord shall have washed away the filth of ^(B)the daughters of Zion and cleansed the bloodstains of Jerusalem from its midst by a spirit of judgment and by ^(C)a spirit of burning.^[a]

^13 (A)each one's work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed ^(B)by fire, and ^(C)the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. ¹⁴ If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, ^(D)he will receive a reward. ¹⁵ If anyone's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, ^(E)but only as through fire.

¹⁷ for ^(A)the great day of their wrath has come, and ^(B)who can stand?”

⁷ So the honor is for you who ^(A)believe, but for those who ^(B)do not believe,

⁸ and

They stumble because they disobey the word, ^(E)as they were destined to do.

²⁵ See that you do not refuse him who is speaking. For ^(A)if they did not escape when they refused him who warned them on earth, much less will we escape if we reject him who warns from heaven.

⁵ So too at the present time there is ^(A)a remnant, chosen by grace. ^6 (B)But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.

⁷ What then? ^(C)Israel failed to obtain what it was seeking. The elect obtained it, but the rest ^(D)were hardened, ⁸ as it is written,

⁹ And David says,

³⁶ But ^(A)stay awake at all times, ^(B)praying that you may ^(C)have strength to escape all these things that are going to take place, and ^(D)to stand before the Son of Man.”
