The Power of Faith over a Demon

14 When(A) they came to the disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and scribes disputing(B) with them. 15 All of a sudden, when the whole crowd saw Him, they were amazed[a] and ran to greet Him. 16 Then He asked them, “What are you arguing with them about?”

17 Out of the crowd, one man answered Him, “Teacher,(C) I brought my son to You. He has a spirit(D) that makes him unable to speak.(E) 18 Wherever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth, and becomes rigid. So I asked Your disciples to drive it out, but they couldn’t.”

19 He replied to them, “You unbelieving(F) generation! How long will I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him to Me.” 20 So they brought him to Him. When the spirit saw Him, it immediately convulsed the boy. He fell to the ground and rolled around, foaming at the mouth. 21 “How long has this been happening to him?” Jesus asked his father.

“From childhood,” he said. 22 “And many times it has thrown him into fire or water to destroy(G) him. But if You can do anything, have compassion(H) on us and help us.”

23 Then Jesus said to him, “‘If You can’?[b][c] Everything is possible(I) to the one who believes.”(J)

24 Immediately the father of the boy cried out, “I do believe! Help my unbelief.”

25 When Jesus saw that a crowd was rapidly coming together, He rebuked(K) the unclean(L) spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf(M) spirit,[d] I command you: come out of him and never enter him again!”

26 Then it came out, shrieking and convulsing(N) him[e] violently. The boy became like a corpse, so that many said, “He’s dead.” 27 But Jesus, taking him by the hand, raised him,(O) and he stood up.

28 After He went into a house, His disciples asked Him privately, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”

29 And He told them, “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer(P) [and fasting].”[f](Q)

The Power of Faith over a Demon

14 When they reached the crowd,(A) a man approached and knelt down before Him. 15 “Lord,” he said, “have mercy on my son, because he has seizures[a] and suffers severely. He often falls into the fire and often into the water. 16 I brought him to Your disciples, but they couldn’t heal him.”(B)

17 Jesus replied, “You unbelieving and rebellious[b] generation! How long will I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring him here to Me.”(C) 18 Then Jesus rebuked the demon,[c] and it[d] came out of him,(D) and from that moment[e] the boy was healed.

19 Then the disciples approached Jesus privately and said, “Why couldn’t we drive it out?”

20 “Because of your little faith,” He[f] told them. “For I assure you: If you have faith the size of[g] a mustard seed, you will tell this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move.(E) Nothing will be impossible for you.(F) [21 However, this kind does not come out except by prayer and fasting.][h]

The Power of Faith over a Demon

37 The next day,(A) when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met Him. 38 Just then a man from the crowd cried out, “Teacher, I beg You to look at my son, because he’s my only child.(B) 39 Often a spirit seizes him; suddenly he shrieks, and it throws him into convulsions until he foams at the mouth;[a] wounding[b] him, it hardly ever leaves him. 40 I begged Your disciples to drive it out, but they couldn’t.”(C)

41 Jesus replied, “You unbelieving and rebellious[c] generation!(D) How long will I be with you and put up with you?(E) Bring your son here.”

42 As the boy was still approaching, the demon knocked him down and threw him into severe convulsions. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, cured the boy,(F) and gave him back to his father.(G) 43 And they were all astonished at the greatness of God.(H)

Paying the Temple Tax

24 When they came to Capernaum, those who collected the double-drachma tax[a] approached Peter and said, “Doesn’t your Teacher pay the double-drachma tax?”(A)

25 “Yes,” he said.

When he went into the house, Jesus spoke to him first,[b] “What do you think, Simon? Who do earthly kings collect tariffs or taxes from? From their sons or from strangers?”[c](B)

26 “From strangers,” he said.[d]

“Then the sons are free,” Jesus told him. 27 “But, so we won’t offend them, go to the sea, cast in a fishhook, and take the first fish that you catch. When you open its mouth you’ll find a coin.[e] Take it and give it to them for Me and you.”(C)

Warnings from Jesus

42 “But whoever causes the downfall of one of these little ones who believe in Me(A)—it would be better for him if a heavy millstone[a](B) were hung around his neck and he were thrown into the sea. 43 And if your hand causes your downfall, cut it off.(C) It is better for you to enter life maimed(D) than to have two hands and go to hell—the unquenchable fire,(E) [44 where

45 And if your foot causes your downfall,(G) cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame(H) than to have two feet and be thrown into hell— [the unquenchable fire,(I) 46 where

Their worm does not die,

47 And if your eye causes your downfall, gouge it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God(K) with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown(L) into hell,(M) 48 where

Their worm does not die,
and the fire is not quenched.[f]

Woe to the world because of offenses. For offenses must come, but woe to that man by whom the offense comes.(A) If your hand or your foot causes your downfall, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or lame, than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into the eternal fire.(B) And if your eye causes your downfall, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye, rather than to have two eyes and be thrown into hellfire![a](C)

The Parable of the Lost Sheep

10 “See that you don’t look down on one of these little ones,(D) because I tell you that in heaven their angels(E) continually view the face of My Father in heaven.(F) [11 For the Son of Man(G) has come to save the lost.][b] 12 What do you think?(H) If a man has 100 sheep, and one of them goes astray, won’t he leave the 99 on the hillside and go and search for the stray?(I) 13 And if he finds it, I assure you: He rejoices over that sheep[c] more than over the 99 that did not go astray. 14 In the same way, it is not the will of your Father in heaven that one of these little ones perish.

Restoring a Brother

15 “If your brother sins against you,[d] go and rebuke him in private.[e] If he listens to you, you have won your brother.(J) 16 But if he won’t listen, take one or two more with you, so that by the testimony[f] of two or three witnesses every fact may be established.(K)[g] 17 If he pays no attention to them, tell the church.[h](L) But if he doesn’t pay attention even to the church, let him be like an unbeliever[i] and a tax collector to you.(M) 18 I assure you: Whatever you bind on earth is already bound[j] in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth is already loosed[k] in heaven.(N) 19 Again, I assure you: If two of you on earth agree about any matter that you[l] pray for, it will be done for you[m] by My Father in heaven. 20 For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there among them.”

The Parable of the Unforgiving Slave

21 Then Peter came to Him and said, “Lord, how many times could my brother sin against me and I forgive him? As many as seven times?”(O)

22 “I tell you, not as many as seven,” Jesus said to him, “but 70 times seven.[n] 23 For this reason, the kingdom of heaven can be compared to a king who wanted to settle accounts with his slaves. 24 When he began to settle accounts, one who owed 10,000 talents[o] was brought before him. 25 Since he had no way to pay it back, his master commanded that he, his wife, his children, and everything he had be sold to pay the debt.(P)

26 “At this, the slave fell facedown before him and said, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you everything!’ 27 Then the master of that slave had compassion, released him, and forgave him the loan.

28 “But that slave went out and found one of his fellow slaves who owed him 100 denarii.[p](Q) He grabbed him, started choking him, and said, ‘Pay what you owe!’

29 “At this, his fellow slave fell down[q] and began begging him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.’ 30 But he wasn’t willing. On the contrary, he went and threw him into prison until he could pay what was owed. 31 When the other slaves saw what had taken place, they were deeply distressed and went and reported to their master everything that had happened.

32 “Then, after he had summoned him, his master said to him, ‘You wicked slave! I forgave you all that debt because you begged me. 33 Shouldn’t you also have had mercy on your fellow slave, as I had mercy on you?’(R) 34 And his master got angry and handed him over to the jailers to be tortured until he could pay everything that was owed. 35 So My heavenly Father will also do to you if each of you does not forgive his brother[r] from his[s] heart.”(S)
