Luke 6:20-49
New International Version
20 Looking at his disciples, he said:
“Blessed are you who are poor,
for yours is the kingdom of God.(A)
21 Blessed are you who hunger now,
for you will be satisfied.(B)
Blessed are you who weep now,
for you will laugh.(C)
22 Blessed are you when people hate you,
when they exclude you(D) and insult you(E)
and reject your name as evil,
because of the Son of Man.(F)
23 “Rejoice in that day and leap for joy,(G) because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets.(H)
24 “But woe to you who are rich,(I)
for you have already received your comfort.(J)
25 Woe to you who are well fed now,
for you will go hungry.(K)
Woe to you who laugh now,
for you will mourn and weep.(L)
26 Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you,
for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets.(M)
Love for Enemies(N)
27 “But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,(O) 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.(P) 29 If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. 30 Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back.(Q) 31 Do to others as you would have them do to you.(R)
32 “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you?(S) Even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you?(T) Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. 35 But love your enemies, do good to them,(U) and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children(V) of the Most High,(W) because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. 36 Be merciful,(X) just as your Father(Y) is merciful.
Judging Others(Z)
37 “Do not judge, and you will not be judged.(AA) Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.(AB) 38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.(AC) For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”(AD)
39 He also told them this parable: “Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into a pit?(AE) 40 The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher.(AF)
41 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.
A Tree and Its Fruit(AG)
43 “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. 44 Each tree is recognized by its own fruit.(AH) People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. 45 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.(AI)
The Wise and Foolish Builders(AJ)
46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’(AK) and do not do what I say?(AL) 47 As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice,(AM) I will show you what they are like. 48 They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”

New King James Version
The Beatitudes(A)
20 Then He lifted up His eyes toward His disciples, and said:
(B)“Blessed are you poor,
For yours is the kingdom of God.
21 (C)Blessed are you who hunger now,
For you shall be (D)filled.[a]
(E)Blessed are you who weep now,
For you shall (F)laugh.
22 (G)Blessed are you when men hate you,
And when they (H)exclude you,
And revile you, and cast out your name as evil,
For the Son of Man’s sake.
23 (I)Rejoice in that day and leap for joy!
For indeed your reward is great in heaven,
For (J)in like manner their fathers did to the prophets.
Jesus Pronounces Woes
24 “But(K) woe to you (L)who are rich,
For (M)you have received your consolation.
25 (N)Woe to you who are full,
For you shall hunger.
(O)Woe to you who laugh now,
For you shall mourn and (P)weep.
26 (Q)Woe [b]to you when [c]all men speak well of you,
For so did their fathers to the false prophets.
Love Your Enemies(R)
27 (S)“But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 (T)bless those who curse you, and (U)pray for those who spitefully use you. 29 (V)To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also. (W)And from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either. 30 (X)Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods do not ask them back. 31 (Y)And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise.
32 (Z)“But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 (AA)And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive back, what credit is that to you? For even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much back. 35 But (AB)love your enemies, (AC)do good, and (AD)lend, [d]hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and (AE)you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil. 36 (AF)Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful.
Do Not Judge(AG)
37 (AH)“Judge not, and you shall not be judged. Condemn not, and you shall not be condemned. (AI)Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38 (AJ)Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your (AK)bosom. For (AL)with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”
39 And He spoke a parable to them: (AM)“Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into the ditch? 40 (AN)A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone who is perfectly trained will be like his teacher. 41 (AO)And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not perceive the plank in your own eye? 42 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me remove the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the plank that is in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck that is in your brother’s eye.
A Tree Is Known by Its Fruit(AP)
43 (AQ)“For a good tree does not bear bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. 44 For (AR)every tree is known by its own fruit. For men do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they gather grapes from a bramble bush. 45 (AS)A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good; and an evil man out of the evil [e]treasure of his heart brings forth evil. For out (AT)of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.
Build on the Rock(AU)
46 (AV)“But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say? 47 (AW)Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like: 48 He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was [f]founded on the rock. 49 But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it [g]fell. And the ruin of that house was great.”

20 And (A)he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, (B)and said:

21 (D)“Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied.
(E)“Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.
22 “Blessed are you when (F)people hate you and when they (G)exclude you and revile you and (H)spurn your name as evil, (I)on account of the Son of Man! 23 (J)Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for (K)so their fathers did to the prophets.
Jesus Pronounces Woes
24 (L)“But woe to you who are rich, (M)for you (N)have received your consolation.
25 “Woe to you who are full now, for (O)you shall be hungry.
“Woe to (P)you who laugh now, (Q)for you shall mourn and weep.
26 “Woe to you, (R)when all people speak well of you, for (S)so their fathers did to (T)the false prophets.
Love Your Enemies
27 “But I say to you who hear, (U)Love your enemies, (V)do good to those who hate you, 28 (W)bless those who curse you, (X)pray for those who abuse you. 29 (Y)To one who (Z)strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic[a] either. 30 (AA)Give to everyone who begs from you, and from one who takes away your goods do not demand them back. 31 And (AB)as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.
32 (AC)“If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 And (AD)if you (AE)lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount. 35 But (AF)love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and (AG)you will be sons of (AH)the Most High, for (AI)he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. 36 (AJ)Be merciful, even as (AK)your Father is merciful.
Judging Others
37 (AL)(AM)“Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; (AN)forgive, and you will be forgiven; 38 (AO)give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put (AP)into your lap. For (AQ)with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”
39 He also told them a parable: (AR)“Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40 (AS)A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is (AT)fully trained will be like his teacher. 41 (AU)Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but (AV)do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother's eye.
A Tree and Its Fruit
43 “For (AW)no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit, 44 for (AX)each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. 45 (AY)The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces (AZ)evil, (BA)for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.
Build Your House on the Rock
46 (BB)“Why (BC)do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? 47 (BD)Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.[b] 49 (BE)But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. 20 And He raised His eyes toward His disciples and began saying, “(A)Blessed are [a]you who are poor, for (B)yours is the kingdom of God. 21 Blessed are [b]you who are hungry now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are [c]you who weep now, for you will laugh. 22 (C)Blessed are you when the people hate you, and when they [d](D)exclude you, and insult you, and scorn your name as evil, on account of the Son of Man. 23 Rejoice on that day and (E)jump for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven. For their fathers used to [e]treat the prophets (F)the same way. 24 But woe to (G)you who are rich, for (H)you are receiving your comfort in full. 25 Woe to you who [f]are well-fed now, for you will be hungry. 27 “But I say to you who hear, (J)love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, (K)pray for those who are abusive to you. 29 (L)Whoever hits you on the cheek, offer him the other also; and whoever takes away your [h]cloak, do not withhold your [i]tunic from him either. 30 Give to everyone who asks of you, and whoever takes away what is yours, do not demand it back. 31 [j](M)Treat people the same way you want them to [k]treat you. 32 (N)If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 (O)And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners in order to receive back the same amount. 35 But (P)love your enemies and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be (Q)sons of (R)the Most High; for He Himself is kind to ungrateful and evil people. 36 [l]Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
37 “(S)Do not [m]judge, and you will not be judged; and do not [n]condemn, and you will not be condemned; [o](T)pardon, and you will be pardoned. 38 Give, and it will be given to you. They will [p]pour (U)into your lap a (V)good measure—pressed down, shaken together, and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return.”
39 Now He also spoke a parable to them: “(W)A person who is blind cannot guide another who is blind, can he? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40 (X)A [q]student is not above the teacher; but everyone, when he has been fully trained, will be like his teacher. 41 Why do you look at the [r]speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the [s]speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the [t]speck that is in your brother’s eye. 43 (Y)For there is no good tree that bears bad fruit, nor, [u]on the other hand, a bad tree that bears good fruit. 44 (Z)For each tree is known by its own fruit. For people do not gather figs from thorns, nor do they pick grapes from a briar bush. 45 (AA)The good person out of the good [v]treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil person out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; (AB)for his mouth speaks from [w]that which fills his heart.
The Parable of the Builders
46 “Now (AC)why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? 47 (AD)Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and [x]acts on them, I will show you whom he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who [y]dug deep and laid a foundation on the rock; and when there was a flood, the river burst against that house and yet it could not shake it, because it had been well built. 49 But the one who has heard and has not acted accordingly is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation; and the river burst against it and it immediately collapsed, and the ruin of that house was great.”
