^36 (A)One of the Pharisees asked him to eat with him, and he went into the Pharisee's house and reclined at table.

^3 (A)And while he was at ^(B)Bethany in the house of Simon the leper,^[a] as he was reclining at table, a woman came with an alabaster flask of ointment of pure nard, very costly, and she broke the flask and poured it over his head. ⁴ There were some who said to themselves indignantly, “Why was the ointment wasted like that? ⁵ For this ointment could have been sold for more than three hundred denarii^[b] and ^(C)given to the poor.” And they ^(D)scolded her. ⁶ But Jesus said, “Leave her alone. Why do you trouble her? She has done a beautiful thing to me. ⁷ For ^(E)you always have the poor with you, and whenever ^(F)you want, you can do good for them. But ^(G)you will not always have me. ^8 (H)She has done what she could; she has anointed my body beforehand ^(I)for burial. ⁹ And truly, I say to you, wherever ^(J)the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told ^(K)in memory of her.”

⁵ But they said, “Not during the feast, ^(A)lest there be an uproar among the people.”

14 One Sabbath, ^(A)when he went to dine at the house of a ruler of the Pharisees, they were ^(B)watching him carefully.

Woes to the Pharisees and Lawyers

³⁷ While Jesus^[a] was speaking, ^(A)a Pharisee asked him to dine with him, so he went in and reclined at table.

^2 (A)It was Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was ill. ³ So the sisters sent to him, saying, “Lord, ^(B)he whom you love is ill.” ⁴ But when Jesus heard it he said, ^(C)“This illness does not lead to death. It is for ^(D)the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it.”

⁵ Now ^(E)Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus. ⁶ So, when he heard that Lazarus^[a] was ill, ^(F)he stayed two days longer in the place where he was. ⁷ Then after this he said to the disciples, ^(G)“Let us go to Judea again.” ⁸ The disciples said to him, ^(H)“Rabbi, ^(I)the Jews were just now seeking to stone you, and are you going there again?” ⁹ Jesus answered, ^(J)“Are there not twelve hours in the day? ^(K)If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. ¹⁰ But ^(L)if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles, because the light is not ^(M)in him.” ¹¹ After saying these things, he said to them, “Our friend Lazarus ^(N)has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him.” ¹² The disciples said to him, “Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover.” ¹³ Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that he meant taking rest in sleep. ¹⁴ Then Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus has died, ¹⁵ and for your sake I am glad that I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him.” ^16 (O)So Thomas, called the Twin,^[b] said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, ^(P)that we may die with him.”

³⁴ The Son of Man has come ^(A)eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, ^(B)a friend of tax collectors and sinners!’
