Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness(A)
4 Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit,(B) left the Jordan(C) and was led by the Spirit(D) into the wilderness, 2 where for forty days(E) he was tempted[a] by the devil.(F) He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.
3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God,(G) tell this stone to become bread.”
4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’[b]”(H)
5 The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.(I) 6 And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me,(J) and I can give it to anyone I want to. 7 If you worship me, it will all be yours.”
8 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’[c]”(K)
9 The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. 10 For it is written:
“‘He will command his angels concerning you
to guard you carefully;
11 they will lift you up in their hands,
so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’[d]”(L)
12 Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’[e]”(M)
13 When the devil had finished all this tempting,(N) he left him(O) until an opportune time.
Jesus Rejected at Nazareth
14 Jesus returned to Galilee(P) in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside.(Q) 15 He was teaching in their synagogues,(R) and everyone praised him.
16 He went to Nazareth,(S) where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue,(T) as was his custom. He stood up to read,(U) 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me,(V)
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news(W) to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”[f](X)
20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down.(Y) The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled(Z) in your hearing.”
22 All spoke well of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his lips. “Isn’t this Joseph’s son?” they asked.(AA)
23 Jesus said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to me: ‘Physician, heal yourself!’ And you will tell me, ‘Do here in your hometown(AB) what we have heard that you did in Capernaum.’”(AC)
24 “Truly I tell you,” he continued, “no prophet is accepted in his hometown.(AD) 25 I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land.(AE) 26 Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon.(AF) 27 And there were many in Israel with leprosy[g] in the time of Elisha the prophet, yet not one of them was cleansed—only Naaman the Syrian.”(AG)
28 All the people in the synagogue were furious when they heard this. 29 They got up, drove him out of the town,(AH) and took him to the brow of the hill on which the town was built, in order to throw him off the cliff. 30 But he walked right through the crowd and went on his way.(AI)
Jesus Drives Out an Impure Spirit(AJ)
31 Then he went down to Capernaum,(AK) a town in Galilee, and on the Sabbath he taught the people. 32 They were amazed at his teaching,(AL) because his words had authority.(AM)
33 In the synagogue there was a man possessed by a demon, an impure spirit. He cried out at the top of his voice, 34 “Go away! What do you want with us,(AN) Jesus of Nazareth?(AO) Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are(AP)—the Holy One of God!”(AQ)
35 “Be quiet!” Jesus said sternly.(AR) “Come out of him!” Then the demon threw the man down before them all and came out without injuring him.
36 All the people were amazed(AS) and said to each other, “What words these are! With authority(AT) and power he gives orders to impure spirits and they come out!” 37 And the news about him spread throughout the surrounding area.(AU)
Jesus Heals Many(AV)(AW)
38 Jesus left the synagogue and went to the home of Simon. Now Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they asked Jesus to help her. 39 So he bent over her and rebuked(AX) the fever, and it left her. She got up at once and began to wait on them.
40 At sunset, the people brought to Jesus all who had various kinds of sickness, and laying his hands on each one,(AY) he healed them.(AZ) 41 Moreover, demons came out of many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!”(BA) But he rebuked(BB) them and would not allow them to speak,(BC) because they knew he was the Messiah.
42 At daybreak, Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people were looking for him and when they came to where he was, they tried to keep him from leaving them. 43 But he said, “I must proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God(BD) to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.” 44 And he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Judea.(BE)

Satan Tempts Jesus(A)

5 [d]Then the devil, taking Him up on a high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 And the devil said to Him, “All this authority I will give You, and their glory; for (G)this has been delivered to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. 7 Therefore, if You will worship before me, all will be Yours.”
8 And Jesus answered and said to him, [e]“Get behind Me, Satan! [f]For it is written, (H)‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ”
9 (I)Then he brought Him to Jerusalem, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here. 10 For it is written:
(J)‘He shall give His angels charge over you,
To keep you,’
11 and,
(K)‘In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ”
12 And Jesus answered and said to him, “It has been said, (L)‘You shall not [g]tempt the Lord your God.’ ”
13 Now when the devil had ended every [h]temptation, he departed from Him (M)until an opportune time.
Jesus Begins His Galilean Ministry(N)
14 (O)Then Jesus returned (P)in the power of the Spirit to (Q)Galilee, and (R)news of Him went out through all the surrounding region. 15 And He (S)taught in their synagogues, (T)being glorified by all.
Jesus Rejected at Nazareth(U)
16 So He came to (V)Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, (W)He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. 17 And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:
18 “The(X) Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me [i]to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To (Y)set at liberty those who are [j]oppressed;
19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”
20 Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is (Z)fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 So all bore witness to Him, and (AA)marveled at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, (AB)“Is this not Joseph’s son?”
23 He said to them, “You will surely say this proverb to Me, ‘Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we have heard done in (AC)Capernaum,[k] do also here in (AD)Your country.’ ” 24 Then He said, “Assuredly, I say to you, no (AE)prophet is accepted in his own country. 25 But I tell you truly, (AF)many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a great famine throughout all the land; 26 but to none of them was Elijah sent except to [l]Zarephath, in the region of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow. 27 (AG)And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian.”
28 So all those in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were (AH)filled with [m]wrath, 29 (AI)and rose up and thrust Him out of the city; and they led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, that they might throw Him down over the cliff. 30 Then (AJ)passing through the midst of them, He went His way.
Jesus Casts Out an Unclean Spirit(AK)
31 Then (AL)He went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and was teaching them on the Sabbaths. 32 And they were (AM)astonished at His teaching, (AN)for His word was with authority. 33 (AO)Now in the synagogue there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon. And he cried out with a loud voice, 34 saying, “Let us alone! What have we to do with You, Jesus of Nazareth? Did You come to destroy us? (AP)I know who You are—(AQ)the Holy One of God!”
35 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, [n]“Be quiet, and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him in their midst, it came out of him and did not hurt him. 36 Then they were all amazed and spoke among themselves, saying, “What a word this is! For with authority and power He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.” 37 And the report about Him went out into every place in the surrounding region.
Peter’s Mother-in-Law Healed(AR)
38 (AS)Now He arose from the synagogue and entered Simon’s house. But Simon’s wife’s mother was [o]sick with a high fever, and they (AT)made request of Him concerning her. 39 So He stood over her and (AU)rebuked the fever, and it left her. And immediately she arose and served them.
Many Healed After Sabbath Sunset(AV)
40 (AW)When the sun was setting, all those who had any that were sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and He laid His hands on every one of them and healed them. 41 (AX)And demons also came out of many, crying out and saying, (AY)“You are [p]the Christ, the Son of God!”
And He, (AZ)rebuking them, did not allow them to [q]speak, for they knew that He was the Christ.
Jesus Preaches in Galilee(BA)
42 (BB)Now when it was day, He departed and went into a deserted place. And the crowd sought Him and came to Him, and tried to keep Him from leaving them; 43 but He said to them, “I must (BC)preach the kingdom of God to the other cities also, because for this purpose I have been sent.” 44 (BD)And He was preaching in the synagogues of [r]Galilee.

Tentation de Jésus-Christ
4 Jésus, rempli du Saint-Esprit, revint du Jourdain, et il fut conduit par l’Esprit dans le désert, 2 où il fut tenté par le diable pendant quarante jours. Il ne mangea rien durant ces jours-là, et, après qu’ils furent écoulés, il eut faim. 3 Le diable lui dit: Si tu es Fils de Dieu, ordonne à cette pierre qu’elle devienne du pain. 4 Jésus lui répondit: Il est écrit: L’homme ne vivra pas de pain seulement[a].
5 Le diable, l’ayant élevé, lui montra en un instant tous les royaumes de la terre, 6 et lui dit: Je te donnerai toute cette puissance, et la gloire de ces royaumes; car elle m’a été donnée, et je la donne à qui je veux. 7 Si donc tu m’adores[b], elle sera toute à toi. 8 Jésus lui répondit: Il est écrit: Tu adoreras le Seigneur, ton Dieu, et tu le serviras lui seul[c].
9 Le diable le conduisit encore à Jérusalem, le plaça sur le haut du temple, et lui dit: Si tu es Fils de Dieu, jette-toi d’ici en bas; car il est écrit:
10 Il donnera des ordres à ses anges à ton sujet,
Afin qu’ils te gardent;
11 et:
Ils te porteront sur les mains,
De peur que ton pied ne heurte contre une pierre[d].
12 Jésus lui répondit: Il est dit: Tu ne tenteras point le Seigneur, ton Dieu[e].
13 Après l’avoir tenté de toutes ces manières, le diable s’éloigna de lui jusqu’à un moment favorable.
Jésus-Christ en Galilée
14 Jésus, revêtu de la puissance de l’Esprit, retourna en Galilée, et sa renommée se répandit dans tout le pays d’alentour. 15 Il enseignait dans les synagogues, et il était glorifié par tous.
Jésus dans la synagogue de Nazareth
16 Il se rendit à Nazareth, où il avait été élevé, et, selon sa coutume, il entra dans la synagogue le jour du sabbat. Il se leva pour faire la lecture[f], 17 et on lui remit le livre du prophète Esaïe. L’ayant déroulé[g], il trouva l’endroit où il était écrit:
18 L’Esprit du Seigneur est sur moi,
Parce qu’il m’a oint pour annoncer une bonne nouvelle aux pauvres;
[Il m’a envoyé pour guérir ceux qui ont le cœur brisé,]
19 Pour proclamer aux captifs la délivrance,
Et aux aveugles le recouvrement de la vue,
Pour renvoyer libres les opprimés,
Pour publier une année de grâce du Seigneur[h].
20 Ensuite, il roula le livre, le remit au serviteur, et s’assit. Tous ceux qui se trouvaient dans la synagogue avaient les regards fixés sur lui.
21 Alors il commença à leur dire: Aujourd’hui cette parole de l’Ecriture, que vous venez d’entendre, est accomplie. 22 Et tous lui rendaient témoignage; ils étaient étonnés des paroles de grâce qui sortaient de sa bouche, et ils disaient: N’est-ce pas le fils de Joseph? 23 Jésus leur dit: Sans doute vous m’appliquerez ce proverbe: Médecin, guéris-toi toi-même; et vous me direz: Fais ici, dans ta patrie, tout ce que nous avons appris que tu as fait à Capernaüm. 24 Mais, ajouta-t-il, je vous le dis en vérité, aucun prophète n’est bien reçu dans sa patrie. 25 Je vous le dis en vérité: il y avait plusieurs veuves en Israël du temps d’Elie, lorsque le ciel fut fermé trois ans et six mois et qu’il y eut une grande famine sur toute la terre; 26 et cependant Elie ne fut envoyé vers aucune d’elles, si ce n’est vers une femme veuve, à Sarepta, dans le pays de Sidon. 27 Il y avait aussi plusieurs lépreux en Israël du temps d’Elisée, le prophète; et cependant aucun d’eux ne fut purifié, si ce n’est Naaman le Syrien.
28 Ils furent tous remplis de colère dans la synagogue, lorsqu’ils entendirent ces choses. 29 Et s’étant levés, ils le chassèrent de la ville, et le menèrent jusqu’au sommet de la montagne sur laquelle leur ville était bâtie, afin de le précipiter en bas. 30 Mais Jésus, passant au milieu d’eux, s’en alla.
Jésus chasse un démon à Capernaüm
31 Il descendit à Capernaüm, ville de la Galilée; et il enseignait, le jour du sabbat. 32 On était frappé de sa doctrine; car il parlait avec autorité.
33 Il se trouva dans la synagogue un homme qui avait un esprit de démon impur, et qui s’écria d’une voix forte: 34 Ah! qu’y a-t-il entre nous et toi, Jésus de Nazareth? Tu es venu pour nous perdre. Je sais qui tu es: le Saint de Dieu. 35 Jésus le menaça, disant: Tais-toi, et sors de cet homme. Et le démon le jeta au milieu de l’assemblée, et sortit de lui, sans lui faire aucun mal. 36 Tous furent saisis de stupeur, et ils se disaient les uns aux autres: Quelle est cette parole? Il commande avec autorité et puissance aux esprits impurs, et ils sortent! 37 Et sa renommée se répandit dans tous les lieux d’alentour.
Jésus guérit la belle-mère de Pierre et d’autres malades
38 En sortant de la synagogue, il se rendit à la maison de Simon. La belle-mère de Simon avait une violente fièvre, et ils le prièrent en sa faveur. 39 S’étant penché sur elle, il menaça la fièvre, et la fièvre la quitta. A l’instant elle se leva, et les servit.
40 Après le coucher du soleil, tous ceux qui avaient des malades atteints de diverses maladies les lui amenèrent. Il imposa les mains à chacun d’eux, et il les guérit. 41 Des démons aussi sortirent de beaucoup de personnes, en criant et en disant: Tu es le Fils de Dieu. Mais il les menaçait et ne leur permettait pas de parler, parce qu’ils savaient qu’il était le Christ.
42 Dès que le jour parut, il sortit et alla dans un lieu désert. Une foule de gens se mirent à sa recherche, et arrivèrent jusqu’à lui; ils voulaient le retenir, afin qu’il ne les quitte point. 43 Mais il leur dit: Il faut aussi que j’annonce aux autres villes la bonne nouvelle du royaume de Dieu; car c’est pour cela que j’ai été envoyé. 44 Et il prêchait dans les synagogues de la Galilée.
