Luke 4:14-21

New International Version

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

¹⁴Jesus returned to Galilee^(A) in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside.^(B) ¹⁵He was teaching in their synagogues,^(C) and everyone praised him.

¹⁶He went to Nazareth,^(D) where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue,^(E) as was his custom. He stood up to read,^(F) ¹⁷and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:

¹⁸“The Spirit of the Lord is on me,^(G)
    because he has anointed me
    to proclaim good news^(H) to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
    and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
¹⁹    to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”^[a]^(I)

²⁰Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down.^(J) The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. ²¹He began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled^(K) in your hearing.”

Jesus Heals a Crippled Woman on the Sabbath

¹⁰On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues,^(A) ¹¹and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years.^(B) She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. ¹²When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, “Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.” ¹³Then he put his hands on her,^(C) and immediately she straightened up and praised God.

¹⁴Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath,^(D) the synagogue leader^(E) said to the people, “There are six days for work.^(F) So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath.”

¹⁵The Lord answered him, “You hypocrites! Doesn’t each of you on the Sabbath untie your ox or donkey from the stall and lead it out to give it water?^(G) ¹⁶Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham,^(H) whom Satan^(I) has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?”

¹⁷When he said this, all his opponents were humiliated,^(J) but the people were delighted with all the wonderful things he was doing.

Genesis 1:26-2:3

²⁶Then God said, “Let us^(A) make mankind^(B) in our image,^(C) in our likeness,^(D) so that they may rule^(E) over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky,^(F) over the livestock and all the wild animals,^[a] and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

²⁷So God created^(G) mankind^(H) in his own image,^(I)
in the image of God^(J) he created them;

²⁸God blessed them and said to them,^(M) “Be fruitful and increase in number;^(N) fill the earth^(O) and subdue it. Rule over^(P) the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.^(Q)”

²⁹Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.^(R) ³⁰And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life^(S) in it—I give every green plant for food.^(T)” And it was so.

³¹God saw all that he had made,^(U) and it was very good.^(V) And there was evening, and there was morning^(W)—the sixth day.

2 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.^(X)

²By the seventh day^(Y) God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.^(Z) ³Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy,^(AA) because on it he rested^(AB) from all the work of creating^(AC) that he had done.
