¹⁴ Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”

He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely^(A)—be content with your pay.”

⁵ Keep your lives free from the love of money^(A) and be content with what you have,^(B) because God has said,

⁶ So we say with confidence,

¹¹ I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content^(A) whatever the circumstances.

23 “Do not spread false reports.^(A) Do not help a guilty person by being a malicious witness.^(B)

⁸ But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.^{(A) 9} Those who want to get rich^(B) fall into temptation and a trap^(C) and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. ¹⁰ For the love of money^(D) is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith^(E) and pierced themselves with many griefs.^(F)

⁹ The commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not covet,”^[a](A) and whatever other command there may be, are summed up^(B) in this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”^{[b](C) 10} Love does no harm to a neighbor. Therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.^(D)

⁸ But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord,^(A) “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything,^(B) I will pay back four times the amount.”^(C)
