3 In the fifteenth year of the reign of ^(A)Tiberius Caesar, ^(B)Pontius Pilate ^(C)being governor of Judea, and ^(D)Herod being tetrarch of Galilee, and his brother Philip tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene,

The Birth of Jesus Christ

2 In those days ^(A)a decree went out from ^(B)Caesar Augustus that all the world should be ^(C)registered.

² And they bound him and ^(A)led him away and ^(B)delivered him over to ^(C)Pilate the governor.

³⁰ Then the king rose, and ^(A)the governor and Bernice and those who were sitting with them.

²⁷ When two years had elapsed, Felix was succeeded by Porcius ^(A)Festus. And ^(B)desiring to do the Jews a favor, ^(C)Felix left Paul in prison.

²⁶ “Claudius Lysias, to ^(A)his Excellency the governor Felix, ^(B)greetings.

²⁷ for truly in this city there were gathered together against your ^(A)holy servant Jesus, ^(B)whom you anointed, both ^(C)Herod and ^(D)Pontius Pilate, along ^(E)with the Gentiles and ^(F)the peoples of Israel,

²⁴ So Pilate decided that their demand should be granted.

Jesus Before Herod

⁶ When Pilate heard this, he asked whether the man was a Galilean. ⁷ And when he learned that he belonged to ^(A)Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him over to Herod, who was himself in Jerusalem at that time. ⁸ When Herod saw Jesus, he was very glad, ^(B)for he had long desired to see him, ^(C)because he had heard about him, and he was hoping ^(D)to see some sign done by him. ⁹ So he questioned him at some length, but he made no answer. ¹⁰ The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing him. ¹¹ And Herod with his soldiers ^(E)treated him with contempt and ^(F)mocked him. Then, ^(G)arraying him in splendid clothing, he sent him back to Pilate.
