3 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate^(C) was governor of Judea, Herod^(D) tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene—

The Birth of Jesus

2 In those days Caesar Augustus^(A) issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.^(B)

² So they bound him, led him away and handed him over^(A) to Pilate the governor.^(B)

²⁷ Indeed Herod^(A) and Pontius Pilate^(B) met together with the Gentiles and the people of Israel in this city to conspire against your holy servant Jesus,^(C) whom you anointed.

⁷ Now Herod^(A) the tetrarch heard about all that was going on. And he was perplexed because some were saying that John^(B) had been raised from the dead,^(C)

¹⁹ But when John rebuked Herod^(A) the tetrarch because of his marriage to Herodias, his brother’s wife, and all the other evil things he had done,

14 At that time Herod^(B) the tetrarch heard the reports about Jesus,^(C)

³⁰ The king rose, and with him the governor and Bernice^(A) and those sitting with them.

²⁷ When two years had passed, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus,^(A) but because Felix wanted to grant a favor to the Jews,^(B) he left Paul in prison.^(C)
