The Road to Emmaus

13 And behold, (A)two of them were going that same day to a village named Emmaus, which was [a]sixty stadia from Jerusalem. 14 And they were conversing with each other about all these things which had happened. 15 And it happened that while they were conversing and debating, Jesus Himself approached and was going with them. 16 But (B)their eyes were prevented from recognizing Him. 17 And He said to them, “What are these words that you are discussing with one another as you are walking?” And they stood still, looking sad. 18 And one of them, named Cleopas, answered and said to Him, “Are You [b]the only one visiting Jerusalem and unaware of the things which have happened here in these days?” 19 And He said to them, “What things?” And they said to Him, “The things about (C)Jesus the Nazarene, who was a mighty (D)prophet in deed and word in the sight of God and all the people, 20 and how the chief priests and our (E)rulers delivered Him to the sentence of death, and crucified Him. 21 But we were hoping that it was He who was going to (F)redeem Israel. Indeed, besides all this, it is the third day since these things happened. 22 But also some women among us astounded us. (G)When they were at the tomb early in the morning, 23 and not finding His body, they came, saying that they had also seen a vision of angels who said that He was alive. 24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just exactly as the women also said, but Him they did not see.” 25 And He said to them, “O foolish ones and slow of heart to believe in all that (H)the prophets have spoken! 26 (I)Was it not necessary for the [c]Christ to suffer these things and to enter into His glory?” 27 Then beginning [d]with (J)Moses and [e]with all the (K)prophets, He interpreted to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.

28 And they approached the village where they were going, and (L)He acted as though He were going farther. 29 But they urged Him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, for it is toward evening, and the day [f]is now nearly over.” So He went in to stay with them. 30 And it happened that when He had reclined at the table with them, He took the bread and (M)blessed it, and after breaking it, He was giving it to them. 31 Then their (N)eyes were opened and they recognized Him. And He vanished from [g]their sight. 32 And they said to one another, “[h]Were not our hearts burning within us while He was speaking to us on the road, while He (O)was opening the Scriptures to us?” 33 And they stood up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and (P)found gathered together the eleven and (Q)those with them, 34 who were saying, “(R)The Lord has really risen and (S)has appeared to Simon.”

Jesus Meets Two Disciples(A)

13 On the same day, two of Jesus’ followers[a] were walking to a village called Emmaus, about 60 stadia[b] from Jerusalem. 14 They were talking with each other about all these things that had taken place. 15 While they were discussing and analyzing what had happened,[c] Jesus himself approached and began to walk with them, 16 but their eyes were prevented from recognizing him.

17 He asked them, “What are you discussing with each other as you’re walking along?” They stood still and looked gloomy.

18 The one whose name was Cleopas answered him, “Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who doesn’t know what happened there in the past few days?”

19 He asked them, “What things?”

They answered him, “The events involving Jesus of Nazareth,[d] who was a prophet, mighty in what he said and did before God and all the people, 20 and how our high priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and had him crucified. 21 But we kept hoping that he would be the one to redeem[e] Israel. What is more, this is now the third day since these things occurred. 22 Even some of our women have startled us by what they told us.[f] They were at the tomb early this morning 23 and didn’t find his body there, so they came back and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who were saying that he was alive. 24 Then some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said. However, they didn’t see him.”

25 Then Jesus[g] told them, “O, how foolish you are! How slow you are to believe everything the prophets said! 26 The Messiah[h] had to suffer these things and then enter his glory, didn’t he?” 27 Then, beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them all the passages of Scripture about himself.

28 As they came near the village where the two men[i] were headed, Jesus[j] acted as though he were going farther. 29 But they strongly urged him, “Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the daylight is nearly gone.” So he went in to stay with them.

30 While he was at the table with them, he took the bread, blessed it, broke it in pieces, and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened, and they knew who he was. And he vanished from them.

32 Then they asked each other, “Our hearts kept burning within us[k] as he was talking to us on the road and explaining the Scriptures to us, didn’t they?”

33 They got up right away, went back to Jerusalem, and found the eleven disciples[l] and their companions all together. 34 They kept saying, “The Lord has really risen and has appeared to Simon!”
