32 Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed.(A) 33 When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. 34 Jesus said, “Father,(B) forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”[a](C) And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.(D)
35 The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him.(E) They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”(F)
36 The soldiers also came up and mocked him.(G) They offered him wine vinegar(H) 37 and said, “If you are the king of the Jews,(I) save yourself.”
38 There was a written notice above him, which read: this is the king of the jews.(J)
39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”(K)
40 But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? 41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”(L)
42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.[b]”(M)
43 Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”(N)
The Death of Jesus(O)
44 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon,(P) 45 for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple(Q) was torn in two.(R) 46 Jesus called out with a loud voice,(S) “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”[c](T) When he had said this, he breathed his last.(U)
47 The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God(V) and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.” 48 When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts(W) and went away. 49 But all those who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee,(X) stood at a distance,(Y) watching these things.

33 When they got to the place called Skull Hill, they crucified him, along with the criminals, one on his right, the other on his left.
34-35 Jesus prayed, “Father, forgive them; they don’t know what they’re doing.”
Dividing up his clothes, they threw dice for them. The people stood there staring at Jesus, and the ringleaders made faces, taunting, “He saved others. Let’s see him save himself! The Messiah of God—ha! The Chosen—ha!”
36-37 The soldiers also came up and poked fun at him, making a game of it. They toasted him with sour wine: “So you’re King of the Jews! Save yourself!”
38 Printed over him was a sign: this is the king of the jews.
39 One of the criminals hanging alongside cursed him: “Some Messiah you are! Save yourself! Save us!”
40-41 But the other one made him shut up: “Have you no fear of God? You’re getting the same as him. We deserve this, but not him—he did nothing to deserve this.”
42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you enter your kingdom.”
43 He said, “Don’t worry, I will. Today you will join me in paradise.”
44-46 By now it was noon. The whole earth became dark, the darkness lasting three hours—a total blackout. The Temple curtain split right down the middle. Jesus called loudly, “Father, I place my life in your hands!” Then he breathed his last.

47 When the captain there saw what happened, he honored God: “This man was innocent! A good man, and innocent!”
48-49 All who had come around as spectators to watch the show, when they saw what actually happened, were overcome with grief and headed home. Those who knew Jesus well, along with the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a respectful distance and kept vigil.

44 (Z)It was now about the sixth hour,[d] and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour,[e] 45 while the sun's light failed. And (AA)the curtain of the temple was torn in two. 46 Then Jesus, (AB)calling out with a loud voice, said, “Father, (AC)into your hands I (AD)commit my spirit!” And having said this (AE)he breathed his last. 47 Now (AF)when the centurion saw what had taken place, (AG)he praised God, saying, “Certainly this man was innocent!” 48 And all the crowds that had assembled for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, returned home (AH)beating their breasts. 49 And all (AI)his acquaintances and (AJ)the women who had followed him from Galilee (AK)stood at a distance watching these things.
