Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

^47 (A)While he was still speaking, there came a crowd, and the man called ^(B)Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He drew near to Jesus to kiss him,

⁴¹ And he came the third time and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and taking your rest? ^(A)It is enough; ^(B)the hour has come. ^(C)The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. ⁴² Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”

^43 (D)And immediately, while he was still speaking, ^(E)Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. ⁴⁴ Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man. Seize him and lead him away under guard.” ⁴⁵ And when he came, he went up to him at once and said, ^(F)“Rabbi!” And he ^(G)kissed him. ⁴⁶ And they laid hands on him and seized him. ⁴⁷ But one of those who stood by drew his ^(H)sword and struck the servant^[a] of the high priest and cut off his ear. ⁴⁸ And Jesus said to them, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? ^49 (I)Day after day I was with you in the temple ^(J)teaching, and you did not seize me. But ^(K)let the Scriptures be fulfilled.” ^50 (L)And they all left him and fled.

² Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew ^(A)the place, for ^(B)Jesus often met there with his disciples. ^3 (C)So Judas, having procured a band of soldiers and some officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, went there with lanterns and torches and weapons. ⁴ Then Jesus, ^(D)knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to them, ^(E)“Whom do you seek?” ⁵ They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.”^[a] Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them. ^6 (F)When Jesus^[b] said to them, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground. ⁷ So he asked them again, ^(G)“Whom do you seek?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.” ⁸ Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. So, if you seek me, let these men go.” ^9 (H)This was to fulfill the word that he had spoken: “Of those whom you gave me I have lost not one.” ¹⁰ Then Simon Peter, ^(I)having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant^[c] and cut off his right ear. (The servant's name was Malchus.) ¹¹ So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into its sheath; ^(J)shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?”

^3 (A)Then ^(B)Satan entered into ^(C)Judas called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve. ⁴ He went away and conferred with the chief priests and ^(D)officers how he might betray him to them. ⁵ And they were glad, and agreed to give him money. ⁶ So he consented and sought an opportunity to ^(E)betray him to them in the absence of a crowd.

^10 (A)Then ^(B)Judas Iscariot, who was one of the twelve, ^(C)went to the chief priests in order to betray him to them.

⁴⁵ Then he came to the disciples and said to them, “Sleep and take your rest later on.^[a] See, ^(A)the hour is at hand, and ^(B)the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. ⁴⁶ Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”

^47 (C)While he was still speaking, ^(D)Judas came, one of the twelve, and with him a great crowd with swords and clubs, from the chief priests and the elders of the people. ⁴⁸ Now the betrayer had given them a sign, saying, “The one I will kiss is the man; seize him.” ⁴⁹ And he came up to Jesus at once and said, “Greetings, ^(E)Rabbi!” And he kissed him. ⁵⁰ Jesus said to him, ^(F)“Friend, ^(G)do what you came to do.”^[b] Then they came up and laid hands on Jesus and seized him. ⁵¹ And behold, one of those who were with Jesus stretched out his hand and drew his ^(H)sword and struck the servant^[c] of the high priest and cut off his ear. ⁵² Then Jesus said to him, “Put your sword back into its place. For ^(I)all who take the sword will perish by the sword. ^53 (J)Do you think that I cannot appeal to my Father, and he will at once send me ^(K)more than twelve ^(L)legions of angels? ^54 (M)But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?” ⁵⁵ At that hour Jesus said to the crowds, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs to capture me? Day after day ^(N)I sat in the temple ^(O)teaching, and you did not seize me. ⁵⁶ But ^(P)all this has taken place that the Scriptures of the prophets might be fulfilled.” ^(Q)Then all the disciples left him and fled.

¹⁶ “Brothers, ^(A)the Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke beforehand by the mouth of David concerning Judas, ^(B)who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus. ¹⁷ For ^(C)he was numbered among us and was allotted his share in ^(D)this ministry.” ¹⁸ (Now this man ^(E)acquired a field with ^(F)the reward of his wickedness, and falling headlong^[a] he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out.

^14 (A)Then one of the twelve, whose name was ^(B)Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests ¹⁵ and said, “What will you give me if I deliver him over to you?” And they ^(C)paid him ^(D)thirty pieces of silver. ¹⁶ And from that moment he sought an opportunity ^(E)to betray him.
