Who Is the Greatest?

24 (A)A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. 25 (B)And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles (C)exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. 26 (D)But not so with you. Rather, let (E)the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. 27 For who is the greater, (F)one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But (G)I am among you as the one who serves.

28 “You are those who have stayed with me (H)in my trials, 29 and (I)I assign to you, as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, 30 (J)that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and (K)sit on thrones judging (L)the twelve tribes of Israel.

Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial

31 “Simon, Simon, behold, (M)Satan demanded to have you,[a] (N)that he might sift you like wheat, 32 but (O)I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, (P)strengthen your brothers.” 33 Peter[b] said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both (Q)to prison and (R)to death.” 34 (S)Jesus[c] said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me.”

Scripture Must Be Fulfilled in Jesus

35 And he said to them, (T)“When I sent you out with no moneybag or knapsack or sandals, did you lack anything?” They said, “Nothing.” 36 He said to them, “But now let the one who has a moneybag take it, and likewise a knapsack. And let the one who has no sword sell his cloak and buy one. 37 For I tell you that (U)this Scripture must be fulfilled in me: (V)‘And he was numbered with the transgressors.’ For (W)what is written about me has its fulfillment.” 38 And they said, “Look, Lord, here are two (X)swords.” And he said to them, (Y)“It is enough.”

Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives

39 (Z)And he came out and went, (AA)as was his custom, to (AB)the Mount of Olives, and the disciples followed him. 40 (AC)And when he came to (AD)the place, he said to them, (AE)“Pray that you may not (AF)enter into temptation.” 41 And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and (AG)knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, (AH)“Father, if you are willing, remove (AI)this cup from me. (AJ)Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” 43 And there appeared to him (AK)an angel from heaven, strengthening him. 44 And (AL)being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.[d] 45 And when he rose from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping for sorrow, 46 and he said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Rise and (AM)pray that you may not enter into temptation.”

Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus

47 (AN)While he was still speaking, there came a crowd, and the man called (AO)Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He drew near to Jesus to kiss him, 48 but Jesus said to him, “Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?” 49 And when those who were around him saw what would follow, they said, “Lord, shall we strike (AP)with the sword?” 50 And one of them struck the servant[e] of the high priest and cut off his right ear. 51 But Jesus said, “No more of this!” And he touched his ear and healed him. 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests and (AQ)officers of the temple and elders, who had come out against him, “Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs? 53 When (AR)I was with you day after day in the temple, you did not lay hands on me. But this is (AS)your hour, and (AT)the power of darkness.”

Peter Denies Jesus

54 (AU)Then they seized him and led him away, bringing him into the high priest's house, (AV)and Peter was following at a distance. 55 (AW)And when they had kindled a fire in the middle of (AX)the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat down among them. 56 Then a servant girl, seeing him as he sat in the light and looking closely at him, said, “This man also was with him.” 57 But he denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know him.” 58 And a little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not.” 59 And after an interval of about an hour still another (AY)insisted, saying, “Certainly this man also was with him, for he too is a Galilean.” 60 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” And immediately, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 And the Lord turned and (AZ)looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the saying of the Lord, how he had said to him, (BA)“Before the rooster crows today, you will (BB)deny me three times.” 62 And he went out and wept bitterly.

Jesus Foretells Peter's Denial

30 (A)And when they had sung a hymn, (B)they went out to (C)the Mount of Olives. 31 Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away because of me this night. For it is written, ‘I will (D)strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered.’ 32 But after I am raised up, (E)I will go before you to Galilee.” 33 (F)Peter answered him, “Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away.” 34 (G)Jesus said to him, “Truly, I tell you, this very night, (H)before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” 35 (I)Peter said to him, “Even if I must die with you, I will not deny you!” And all the disciples said the same.

Peter Denies Jesus

69 (A)Now Peter was sitting outside (B)in the courtyard. And a servant girl came up to him and said, “You also were with Jesus the Galilean.” 70 But he denied it before them all, saying, “I do not know what you mean.” 71 And when he went out to the entrance, another servant girl saw him, and she said to the bystanders, “This man was with Jesus (C)of Nazareth.” 72 And again he denied it with an oath: “I do not know the man.” 73 After a little while the bystanders came up and said to Peter, “Certainly you too are one of them, for (D)your accent betrays you.” 74 Then he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know the man.” And immediately the rooster crowed. 75 And Peter remembered the saying of Jesus, (E)“Before the rooster crows, you will (F)deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.
