²² When Jesus heard this, he said to him, “One thing you still lack. ^(A)Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have ^(B)treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”

^33 (A)Sell your possessions, and ^(B)give to the needy. ^(C)Provide yourselves with moneybags that do not grow old, with ^(D)a treasure in the heavens that does not fail, where no thief approaches and no moth destroys.

¹⁸ They are to do good, ^(A)to be rich in good works, to be generous and ^(B)ready to share, ¹⁹ thus ^(C)storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may ^(D)take hold of ^(E)that which is truly life.

²¹ Jesus said to him, “If you would be ^(A)perfect, go, ^(B)sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have ^(C)treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.”

Lay Up Treasures in Heaven

^19 (A)“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where ^(B)moth and rust^[a] destroy and where thieves ^(C)break in and steal, ^20 (D)but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.

⁹ And I tell you, ^(A)make friends for yourselves by means of ^(B)unrighteous wealth,^[a] so that when it fails they may receive you into the eternal dwellings.

⁴² but one thing is necessary.^[a] Mary has chosen ^(A)the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”

The Cost of Following Jesus

⁵⁷ As they were going ^(A)along the road, ^(B)someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” ⁵⁸ And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” ⁵⁹ To another he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” ⁶⁰ And Jesus^[a] said to him, “Leave ^(C)the dead to bury their own dead. But as for you, go and ^(D)proclaim the kingdom of God.” ⁶¹ Yet another said, “I will follow you, Lord, ^(E)but let me first say farewell to those at my home.” ⁶² Jesus said to him, ^(F)“No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.”

⁸ But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and ^(A)a thousand years as one day.
