The Parable of the Dishonest Manager
16 Then Jesus[a] said to the disciples, “There was a rich man who had a manager, and charges were brought to him that this man was squandering his property.(A) 2 So he summoned him and said to him, ‘What is this that I hear about you? Give me an accounting of your management because you cannot be my manager any longer.’ 3 Then the manager said to himself, ‘What will I do, now that my master is taking the position away from me? I am not strong enough to dig, and I am ashamed to beg. 4 I have decided what to do so that, when I am dismissed as manager, people may welcome me into their homes.’ 5 So, summoning his master’s debtors one by one, he asked the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’ 6 He answered, ‘A hundred jugs of olive oil.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it fifty.’ 7 Then he asked another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ He replied, ‘A hundred containers of wheat.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill and make it eighty.’ 8 And his master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly, for the children of this age are more shrewd in dealing with their own generation than are the children of light.(B) 9 And I tell you, make friends for yourselves by means of dishonest wealth[b] so that when it is gone they may welcome you into the eternal homes.[c](C)
10 “Whoever is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much, and whoever is dishonest in a very little is dishonest also in much.(D) 11 If, then, you have not been faithful with the dishonest wealth,[d] who will entrust to you the true riches?(E) 12 And if you have not been faithful with what belongs to another, who will give you what is your own? 13 No slave can serve two masters, for a slave will either hate the one and love the other or be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth.”[e](F)
The Law and the Kingdom of God
14 The Pharisees, who were lovers of money, heard all this, and they ridiculed him.(G) 15 So he said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves in the sight of others, but God knows your hearts, for what is prized by humans is an abomination in the sight of God.(H)
16 “The Law and the Prophets were until John came; since then the good news of the kingdom of God is being proclaimed, and everyone tries to enter it by force.[f](I) 17 But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one stroke of a letter in the law to be dropped.(J)
18 “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and whoever marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery.(K)
The Rich Man and Lazarus
19 “There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. 20 And at his gate lay a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores,(L) 21 who longed to satisfy his hunger with what fell from the rich man’s table; even the dogs would come and lick his sores. 22 The poor man died and was carried away by the angels to be with Abraham.[g] The rich man also died and was buried.(M) 23 In Hades, where he was being tormented, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far away with Lazarus by his side.[h](N) 24 He called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in agony in these flames.’(O) 25 But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things and Lazarus in like manner evil things, but now he is comforted here, and you are in agony.(P) 26 Besides all this, between you and us a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who might want to pass from here to you cannot do so, and no one can cross from there to us.’ 27 He said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father’s house— 28 for I have five brothers—that he may warn them, so that they will not also come into this place of torment.’ 29 Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; they should listen to them.’(Q) 30 He said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’(R) 31 He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’ ”

16 Sinabi rin ni Jesus[a] sa mga alagad, “May isang taong mayaman na may isang katiwala, at isinumbong sa kanya na nilulustay ng taong ito ang kanyang mga kayamanan.
2 At kanyang tinawag siya, at sa kanya'y sinabi, ‘Ano itong nababalitaan ko tungkol sa iyo? Magbigay-sulit ka ng ipinagkatiwala sa iyo, sapagkat hindi ka na maaaring maging katiwala pa.’
3 Sinabi ng katiwala sa kanyang sarili, ‘Anong gagawin ko yamang inaalis sa akin ng aking panginoon ang pagiging katiwala? Hindi ko kayang maghukay at nahihiya akong mamalimos.
4 Naipasiya ko na ang aking gagawin, upang matanggap ako ng mga tao sa kanilang bahay kapag pinaalis na ako sa pagiging katiwala.’
5 Kaya't nang tawagin niyang isa-isa ang mga may utang sa kanyang panginoon, ay sinabi niya sa una, ‘Magkano ang utang mo sa aking panginoon?’
6 At sinabi niya, ‘Isang daang takal na langis.’ At sinabi niya sa kanya, ‘Kunin mo ang iyong kasulatan at maupo ka at isulat mo kaagad ang limampu.’
7 Pagkatapos ay sinabi niya sa iba, ‘Magkano ang utang mo?’ Sinabi niya, ‘Isang daang takal na trigo.’ Sinabi niya sa kanya, ‘Kunin mo ang iyong kasulatan at isulat mo ang walumpu.’
8 At pinuri ng panginoon ang madayang katiwala, sapagkat siya'y gumawang may katusuhan, sapagkat ang mga anak ng sanlibutang ito ay higit na tuso sa pakikitungo sa sarili nilang lahi kaysa mga anak ng liwanag.
9 At sinasabi ko sa inyo, makipagkaibigan kayo para sa inyong mga sarili sa pamamagitan ng mga kayamanan ng kalikuan upang kung ito'y maubos na, ay kanilang tanggapin kayo sa mga walang hanggang tahanan.[b]
10 “Ang tapat sa kakaunti ay tapat din naman sa marami at ang di-tapat sa kakaunti ay di rin naman tapat sa marami.
11 Kung kayo nga'y hindi naging tapat sa kayamanan ng kalikuan, sino ang magtitiwala sa inyo ng mga tunay na kayamanan?
12 At kung hindi kayo naging tapat sa kayamanan ng iba, sino ang sa inyo'y magbibigay ng sarili ninyong pag-aari.
13 Walang(A) aliping makapaglilingkod sa dalawang panginoon, sapagkat kapopootan niya ang isa, at iibigin ang ikalawa, o kaya'y magiging tapat sa isa at hahamakin ang ikalawa. Hindi kayo makapaglilingkod sa Diyos at sa mga kayamanan.”[c]
Ang Kautusan at ang Kaharian ng Diyos(B)
14 Narinig ng mga Fariseo na pawang maibigin sa salapi ang lahat ng mga bagay na ito at kanilang tinuya si Jesus.[d]
15 At sinabi niya sa kanila, “Kayo ang mga nagmamatuwid sa inyong sarili sa paningin ng mga tao, subalit nalalaman ng Diyos ang inyong mga puso. Sapagkat ang dinadakila ng mga tao ay kasuklamsuklam sa paningin ng Diyos.
16 “Ang(C) kautusan at ang mga propeta ay hanggang kay Juan; mula noon, ang magandang balita ng kaharian ng Diyos ay ipinangangaral, at ang bawat isa ay sapilitang pumapasok doon.[e]
17 Ngunit(D) mas madali pa para sa langit at lupa na lumipas, kaysa maalis ang isang kudlit sa kautusan.
18 “Ang(E) bawat humihiwalay sa kanyang asawang babae at nag-asawa ng iba ay nagkakasala ng pangangalunya, at ang nag-aasawa sa babaing hiniwalayan ng kanyang asawa ay nagkakasala ng pangangalunya.
Ang Mayamang Lalaki at si Lazaro
19 “Mayroong isang taong mayaman na nagsusuot ng kulay ube at pinong lino at nagpipista araw-araw sa maraming pagkain.
20 At sa kanyang pintuan ay nakahandusay ang isang pulubi na ang pangala'y Lazaro, na punô ng mga sugat,
21 na naghahangad na makakain mula sa mga nahuhulog sa hapag ng mayaman. Maging ang mga aso ay lumalapit at hinihimuran ang kanyang mga sugat.
22 At nangyari, namatay ang pulubi at siya'y dinala ng mga anghel sa kandungan ni Abraham. Namatay din naman ang mayaman at inilibing.
23 At mula sa Hades na kanyang pinagdurusahan ay tumingala siya at nakita sa malayo si Abraham at si Lazaro sa kanyang kandungan.
24 Siya'y sumigaw at sinabi, ‘Amang Abraham, maawa ka sa akin, at suguin mo si Lazaro, upang itubog niya sa tubig ang dulo ng kanyang daliri, at palamigin ang aking dila, sapagkat naghihirap ako sa apoy na ito.’
25 Subalit sinabi ni Abraham, ‘Anak, alalahanin mo na sa iyong buhay ay tinanggap mo ang iyong mabubuting bagay, at si Lazaro naman ay ang masasamang bagay. Subalit ngayon ay inaaliw siya rito at ikaw ay nagdurusa.
26 Bukod dito, may isang malaking banging inilagay sa pagitan natin, upang ang mga nagnanais tumawid buhat dito patungo sa inyo ay hindi maaari at wala ring makatatawid mula riyan patungo sa amin.’
27 At sinabi niya, ‘Kung gayo'y ipinapakiusap ko sa iyo, ama, na isugo mo siya sa bahay ng aking ama,
28 sapagkat ako'y may limang kapatid na lalaki, upang magpatotoo sa kanila nang hindi rin sila mapunta sa dakong ito ng pagdurusa.
29 Subalit sinabi ni Abraham, ‘Nasa kanila si Moises at ang mga propeta, hayaan mo silang makinig sa kanila.’
30 Sinabi niya, ‘Hindi, amang Abraham, subalit kung ang isang mula sa mga patay ay pumunta sa kanila, sila'y magsisisi.’
31 At sinabi niya sa kanya, ‘Kung hindi nila pinapakinggan si Moises at ang mga propeta, hindi rin sila mahihikayat, kahit may isang bumangon mula sa mga patay.’”

True Wealth
16 Jesus also said to his followers, “Once there was a rich man who had a manager to take care of his business. This manager was accused of cheating him. 2 So he called the manager in and said to him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give me a report of what you have done with my money, because you can’t be my manager any longer.’ 3 The manager thought to himself, ‘What will I do since my master is taking my job away from me? I am not strong enough to dig ditches, and I am ashamed to beg. 4 I know what I’ll do so that when I lose my job people will welcome me into their homes.’
5 “So the manager called in everyone who owed the master any money. He asked the first one, ‘How much do you owe?’ 6 He answered, ‘Eight hundred gallons of olive oil.’ The manager said to him, ‘Take your bill, sit down quickly, and write four hundred gallons.’ 7 Then the manager asked another one, ‘How much do you owe?’ He answered, ‘One thousand bushels of wheat.’ Then the manager said to him, ‘Take your bill and write eight hundred bushels.’ 8 So, the master praised the dishonest manager for being clever. Yes, worldly people are more clever with their own kind than spiritual people are.
9 “I tell you, make friends for yourselves using worldly riches so that when those riches are gone, you will be welcomed in those homes that continue forever. 10 Whoever can be trusted with a little can also be trusted with a lot, and whoever is dishonest with a little is dishonest with a lot. 11 If you cannot be trusted with worldly riches, then who will trust you with true riches? 12 And if you cannot be trusted with things that belong to someone else, who will give you things of your own?
13 “No servant can serve two masters. The servant will hate one master and love the other, or will follow one master and refuse to follow the other. You cannot serve both God and worldly riches.”
God’s Law Cannot Be Changed
14 The Pharisees, who loved money, were listening to all these things and made fun of Jesus. 15 He said to them, “You make yourselves look good in front of people, but God knows what is really in your hearts. What is important to people is hateful in God’s sight.
16 “The law of Moses and the writings of the prophets were preached until John[a] came. Since then the Good News about the kingdom of God is being told, and everyone tries to enter it by force. 17 It would be easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for the smallest part of a letter in the law to be changed.
Divorce and Remarriage
18 “If a man divorces his wife and marries another woman, he is guilty of adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman is also guilty of adultery.”
The Rich Man and Lazarus
19 Jesus said, “There was a rich man who always dressed in the finest clothes and lived in luxury every day. 20 And a very poor man named Lazarus, whose body was covered with sores, was laid at the rich man’s gate. 21 He wanted to eat only the small pieces of food that fell from the rich man’s table. And the dogs would come and lick his sores. 22 Later, Lazarus died, and the angels carried him to the arms of Abraham. The rich man died, too, and was buried. 23 In the place of the dead, he was in much pain. The rich man saw Abraham far away with Lazarus at his side. 24 He called, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me! Send Lazarus to dip his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am suffering in this fire!’ 25 But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember when you were alive you had the good things in life, but bad things happened to Lazarus. Now he is comforted here, and you are suffering. 26 Besides, there is a big pit between you and us, so no one can cross over to you, and no one can leave there and come here.’ 27 The rich man said, ‘Father, then please send Lazarus to my father’s house. 28 I have five brothers, and Lazarus could warn them so that they will not come to this place of pain.’ 29 But Abraham said, ‘They have the law of Moses and the writings of the prophets; let them learn from them.’ 30 The rich man said, ‘No, father Abraham! If someone goes to them from the dead, they would believe and change their hearts and lives.’ 31 But Abraham said to him, ‘If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not listen to someone who comes back from the dead.’”
