Luke 14
New Matthew Bible
Jesus eats with the Pharisee, heals a man with dropsy on the Sabbath, teaches to be lowly, tells of the great supper, and warns people who would follow him to first determine what it will cost them. The salt of the earth.
14 And it happened that he went into the house of one of the chief Pharisees to eat bread on a Sabbath day, and they were watching him. 2 And there was before him a man who had the dropsy. 3 And Jesus addressed the wise men of law and the Pharisees, asking, Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath day? 4 But they held their peace. And he took the man and healed him, and let him go. 5 And he spoke to them, saying, Which of you, having a donkey or an ox fallen into a pit, would not straightaway pull him out on the Sabbath day? 6 And they could not answer him in reply to that.
7 He put forth a similitude to the guests, when he observed how they sought out the seats of honour, and said to them, 8 When you are invited to a wedding by anyone, do not sit down in the highest place, lest a more honourable man than you be bidden by him, 9 and he who invited both him and you come and say to you, Make place for this man – and you then begin with shame to take the lowest seat. 10 But rather, when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest seat, so that when he who invited you comes, he may say to you, Friend, sit up higher. Then you will have honour in the presence of those who sit at food with you. 11 For whoever exalts himself will be brought low, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.
12 Then he said also to the man who had asked him to dinner, When you give a dinner or a supper, do not call your friends or your brethren, neither your kinsfolk or rich neighbours, lest they return the invitation and a recompense be made you. 13 But when you put on a feast, call the poor, the maimed, the lame, and the blind, 14 and you will be happy; for they cannot recompense you, but you shall be recompensed at the resurrection of the just.
15 When one of those who sat at food also heard that, he said to Jesus, Happy is he who eats bread in the kingdom of God!
16 Then Jesus said to him, A certain man prepared a great supper and invited many people. 17 And he sent his servant at supper time to say to those who were bidden, Come, for all things are now ready. 18 And they all at once began to make excuse. The first said to him, I have bought a farm, and I need to go and see it; I pray you, have me excused. 19 And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen and I’m going to inspect them; I pray you, have me excused. 20 The third said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.
21 And the servant went and brought his master word of this. Then was the lord of the house displeased, and said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and quarters of the city, and bring in here the poor and the maimed and the lame and the blind.
22 And the servant said, Lord, it is done as you ordered, and still there is room. 23 And the lord said to the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel the people to come in, so that my house may be filled. 24 For I say to you that none of those men that were bidden shall taste of my supper.
25 A great number of people went with Jesus, and he turned and said to them, 26 If a person comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, wife, and children, and brethren and sisters, and moreover his own life, he cannot be my disciple. 27 And whoever does not bear his cross and come after me, cannot be my disciple. 28 Which of you, thinking of building a tower, would not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has sufficient to complete it?– 29 lest after he has laid the foundation and is not able to complete it, all who see it begin to mock him, 30 saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish it. 31 Or, what king goes to make battle against another king, and does not sit down first and cast in his mind whether he is able with 10,000 to meet him who comes against him with 20,000? 32 If not, while the other is yet a great way off, he will send ambassadors and seek peace. 33 So now then, none of you who will not renounce all that he has can be my disciple.
34 Salt is good. But if salt has lost her saltness, what can be seasoned with it? 35 It is neither good for the land, nor yet for the dunghill, but men cast it out at the doors. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.

A Man with Dropsy Healed on the Sabbath
14 Now it happened, as He went into the house of one of the rulers of the Pharisees to eat bread on the Sabbath, that they watched Him closely. 2 And behold, there was a certain man before Him who had dropsy. 3 And Jesus, answering, spoke to the lawyers and Pharisees, saying, (A)“Is it lawful to heal on the [a]Sabbath?”
4 But they kept silent. And He took him and healed him, and let him go. 5 Then He answered them, saying, (B)“Which of you, having a [b]donkey or an ox that has fallen into a pit, will not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day?” 6 And they could not answer Him regarding these things.
Take the Lowly Place
7 So He told a parable to those who were invited, when He noted how they chose the best places, saying to them: 8 “When you are invited by anyone to a wedding feast, do not sit down in the best place, lest one more honorable than you be invited by him; 9 and he who invited you and him come and say to you, ‘Give place to this man,’ and then you begin with shame to take the lowest place. 10 (C)But when you are invited, go and sit down in the lowest place, so that when he who invited you comes he may say to you, ‘Friend, go up higher.’ Then you will have glory in the presence of those who sit at the table with you. 11 (D)For whoever exalts himself will be [c]humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
12 Then He also said to him who invited Him, “When you give a dinner or a supper, do not ask your friends, your brothers, your relatives, nor rich neighbors, lest they also invite you back, and you be repaid. 13 But when you give a feast, invite (E)the poor, the [d]maimed, the lame, the blind. 14 And you will be (F)blessed, because they cannot repay you; for you shall be repaid at the resurrection of the just.”
The Parable of the Great Supper(G)
15 Now when one of those who sat at the table with Him heard these things, he said to Him, (H)“Blessed is he who shall eat [e]bread in the kingdom of God!”
16 (I)Then He said to him, “A certain man gave a great supper and invited many, 17 and (J)sent his servant at supper time to say to those who were invited, ‘Come, for all things are now ready.’ 18 But they all with one accord began to make excuses. The first said to him, ‘I have bought a piece of ground, and I must go and see it. I ask you to have me excused.’ 19 And another said, ‘I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I am going to test them. I ask you to have me excused.’ 20 Still another said, ‘I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.’ 21 So that servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house, being angry, said to his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in here the poor and the [f]maimed and the lame and the blind.’ 22 And the servant said, ‘Master, it is done as you commanded, and still there is room.’ 23 Then the master said to the servant, ‘Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. 24 For I say to you (K)that none of those men who were invited shall taste my supper.’ ”
Leaving All to Follow Christ(L)
25 Now great multitudes went with Him. And He turned and said to them, 26 (M)“If anyone comes to Me (N)and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, (O)yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple. 27 And (P)whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple. 28 For (Q)which of you, intending to build a tower, does not sit down first and count the cost, whether he has enough to finish it— 29 lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, 30 saying, ‘This man began to build and was not able to finish’? 31 Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand? 32 Or else, while the other is still a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks conditions of peace. 33 So likewise, whoever of you (R)does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple.
Tasteless Salt Is Worthless(S)
34 (T)“Salt is good; but if the salt has lost its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? 35 It is neither fit for the land nor for the [g]dunghill, but men throw it out. He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”

14 Y ACONTECIÓ que entrando en casa de un príncipe de los Fariseos un sábado á comer pan, ellos le acechaban.
2 Y he aquí un hombre hidrópico estaba delante de él.
3 Y respondiendo Jesús, habló á los doctores de la ley y á los Fariseos, diciendo: ¿Es lícito sanar en sábado?
4 Y ellos callaron. Entonces él tomándole, le sanó, y despidióle.
5 Y respondiendo á ellos dijo: ¿El asno ó el buey de cuál de vosotros caerá en algún pozo, y no lo sacará luego en día de sábado?
6 Y no le podían replicar á estas cosas.
7 Y observando cómo escogían los primeros asientos á la mesa, propuso una parábola á los convidados, diciéndoles:
8 Cuando fueres convidado de alguno á bodas, no te sientes en el primer lugar, no sea que otro más honrado que tú esté por él convidado,
9 Y viniendo el que te llamó á ti y á él, te diga: Da lugar á éste: y entonces comiences con vergüenza á tener el lugar último.
10 Mas cuando fueres convidado, ve, y siéntate en el postrer lugar; porque cuando viniere el que te llamó, te diga: Amigo, sube arriba: entonces tendrás gloria delante de los que juntamente se asientan á la mesa.
11 Porque cualquiera que se ensalza, será humillado; y el que se humilla, será ensalzado.
12 Y dijo también al que le había convidado: Cuando haces comida ó cena, no llames á tus amigos, ni á tus hermanos, ni á tus parientes, ni á vecinos ricos; porque también ellos no te vuelvan á convidar, y te sea hecha compensación.
13 Mas cuando haces banquete, llama á los pobres, los mancos, los cojos, los ciegos;
14 Y serás bienaventurado; porque no te pueden retribuir; mas te será recompensado en la resurrección de los justos.
15 Y oyendo esto uno de los que juntamente estaban sentados á la mesa, le dijo: Bienaventurado el que comerá pan en el reino de los cielos.
16 El entonces le dijo: Un hombre hizo una grande cena, y convido á muchos.
17 Y á la hora de la cena envió á su siervo á decir á los convidados: Venid, que ya está todo aparejado.
18 Y comenzaron todos á una á excusarse. El primero le dijo: He comprado una hacienda, y necesito salir y verla; te ruego que me des por excusado.
19 Y el otro dijo: He comprado cinco yuntas de bueyes, y voy á probarlos; ruégote que me des por excusado.
20 Y el otro dijo: Acabo de casarme, y por tanto no puedo ir.
21 Y vuelto el siervo, hizo saber estas cosas á su señor. Entonces enojado el padre de la familia, dijo á su siervo: Ve presto por las plazas y por las calles de la ciudad, y mete acá los pobres, los mancos, y cojos, y ciegos.
22 Y dijo el siervo: Señor, hecho es como mandaste, y aun hay lugar.
23 Y dijo el señor al siervo: Ve por los caminos y por los vallados, y fuérzalos á entrar, para que se llene mi casa.
24 Porque os digo que ninguno de aquellos hombres que fueron llamados, gustará mi cena.
25 Y muchas gentes iban con él; y volviéndose les dijo:
26 Si alguno viene á mí, y no aborrece á su padre, y madre, y mujer, é hijos, y hermanos, y hermanas, y aun también su vida, no puede ser mi discípulo.
27 Y cualquiera que no trae su cruz, y viene en pos de mí, no puede ser mi discípulo.
28 Porque ¿cuál de vosotros, queriendo edificar una torre, no cuenta primero sentado los gastos, si tiene lo que necesita para acabarla?
29 Porque después que haya puesto el fundamento, y no pueda acabarla, todos los que lo vieren, no comiencen á hacer burla de él,
30 Diciendo: Este hombre comenzó á edificar, y no pudo acabar.
31 ¿O cuál rey, habiendo de ir á hacer guerra contra otro rey, sentándose primero no consulta si puede salir al encuentro con diez mil al que viene contra él con veinte mil?
32 De otra manera, cuando aun el otro está lejos, le ruega por la paz, enviándole embajada.
33 Así pues, cualquiera de vosotros que no renuncia á todas las cosas que posee, no puede ser mi discípulo.
34 Buena es la sal; mas si aun la sal fuere desvanecida, ¿con qué se adobará?
35 Ni para la tierra, ni para el muladar es buena; fuera la arrojan. Quien tiene oídos para oir, oiga.
