10 After this, the Lord appointed seventy other talmidim and sent them on ahead in pairs to every town and place where he himself was about to go. He said to them, “To be sure, there is a large harvest. But there are few workers. Therefore, plead with the Lord of the Harvest that he speed workers out to gather in his harvest. Get going now, but pay attention! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. Don’t carry a money-belt or a pack, and don’t stop to shmoose with people on the road.

“Whenever you enter a house, first say, ‘Shalom!’ to the household. If a seeker of shalom is there, your ‘Shalom!’ will find its rest with him; and if there isn’t, it will return to you. Stay in that same house, eating and drinking what they offer, for a worker deserves his wages — don’t move about from house to house.

“Whenever you come into a town where they make you welcome, eat what is put in front of you. Heal the sick there, and tell them, ‘The Kingdom of God is near you.’ 10 But whenever you enter a town and they don’t make you welcome, go out into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your town that sticks to our feet we wipe off as a sign against you! But understand this: the Kingdom of God is near!’ 12 I tell you, it will be more tolerable on the Day of Judgment for S’dom than for that town.

13 “Woe to you, Korazin! Woe to you, Beit-Tzaidah! For if the miracles done in you had been done in Tzor and Tzidon, they would long ago have put on sackcloth and ashes as evidence that they had changed their ways. 14 But at the Judgment it will be more bearable for Tzor and Tzidon than for you!

15 “And you, K’far-Nachum, will you be exalted to heaven? No, you will be brought down to Sh’ol![a]

16 “Whoever listens to you listens to me, also whoever rejects you rejects me, and whoever rejects me rejects the One who sent me.”

17 The seventy came back jubilant. “Lord,” they said, “with your power, even the demons submit to us!” 18 Yeshua said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. 19 Remember, I have given you authority; so you can trample down snakes and scorpions, indeed, all the Enemy’s forces; and you will remain completely unharmed. 20 Nevertheless, don’t be glad that the spirits submit to you; be glad that your names have been recorded in heaven.”

21 At that moment he was filled with joy by the Ruach HaKodesh and said, “Father, Lord of heaven and earth, I thank you because you concealed these things from the sophisticated and educated, yet revealed them to ordinary people. Yes, Father, I thank you that it pleased you to do this.

22 “My Father has handed over everything to me. Indeed, no one fully knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.” 23 Then, turning to the talmidim, he said, privately, “How blessed are the eyes that see what you are seeing! 24 Indeed, I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see the things you are seeing but did not see them, and to hear the things you are hearing but did not hear them.”

25 An expert in Torah stood up to try and trap him by asking, “Rabbi, what should I do to obtain eternal life?” 26 But Yeshua said to him, “What is written in the Torah? How do you read it?” 27 He answered, “You are to love Adonai your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength and with all your understanding; and your neighbor as yourself.”[b] 28 “That’s the right answer,” Yeshua said. “Do this, and you will have life.”

29 But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Yeshua, “And who is my ‘neighbor’?” 30 Taking up the question, Yeshua said: “A man was going down from Yerushalayim to Yericho when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him naked and beat him up, then went off, leaving him half dead. 31 By coincidence, a cohen was going down on that road; but when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 Likewise a Levi who reached the place and saw him also passed by on the other side.

33 “But a man from Shomron who was traveling came upon him; and when he saw him, he was moved with compassion. 34 So he went up to him, put oil and wine on his wounds and bandaged them. Then he set him on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day, he took out two days’ wages, gave them to the innkeeper and said, ‘Look after him; and if you spend more than this, I’ll pay you back when I return.’ 36 Of these three, which one seems to you to have become the ‘neighbor’ of the man who fell among robbers?” 37 He answered, “The one who showed mercy toward him.” Yeshua said to him, “You go and do as he did.”

38 On their way Yeshua and his talmidim came to a village where a woman named Marta welcomed him into her home. 39 She had a sister called Miryam who also sat at the Lord’s feet and heard what he had to say. 40 But Marta was busy with all the work to be done; so, going up to him, she said, “Sir, don’t you care that my sister has been leaving me to do all the work by myself?” 41 However, the Lord answered her, “Marta, Marta, you are fretting and worrying about so many things! 42 But there is only one thing that is essential. Miryam has chosen the right thing, and it won’t be taken away from her.”

10 Μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα ἀνέδειξεν ὁ κύριος [a]καὶ ἑτέρους ἑβδομήκοντα [b]δύο καὶ ἀπέστειλεν αὐτοὺς ἀνὰ δύο [c]δύο πρὸ προσώπου αὐτοῦ εἰς πᾶσαν πόλιν καὶ τόπον οὗ ἤμελλεν αὐτὸς ἔρχεσθαι. ἔλεγεν [d]δὲ πρὸς αὐτούς· Ὁ μὲν θερισμὸς πολύς, οἱ δὲ ἐργάται ὀλίγοι· δεήθητε οὖν τοῦ κυρίου τοῦ θερισμοῦ ὅπως [e]ἐργάτας ἐκβάλῃ εἰς τὸν θερισμὸν αὐτοῦ. ὑπάγετε· [f]ἰδοὺ ἀποστέλλω ὑμᾶς ὡς ἄρνας ἐν μέσῳ λύκων. μὴ βαστάζετε βαλλάντιον, μὴ πήραν, [g]μὴ ὑποδήματα, καὶ μηδένα κατὰ τὴν ὁδὸν ἀσπάσησθε. εἰς ἣν δ’ ἂν [h]εἰσέλθητε οἰκίαν πρῶτον λέγετε· Εἰρήνη τῷ οἴκῳ τούτῳ. καὶ ἐὰν [i]ᾖ ἐκεῖ υἱὸς εἰρήνης, ἐπαναπαήσεται ἐπ’ αὐτὸν ἡ εἰρήνη ὑμῶν· εἰ δὲ μήγε, ἐφ’ ὑμᾶς ἀνακάμψει. ἐν αὐτῇ δὲ τῇ οἰκίᾳ μένετε, ἐσθίοντες καὶ πίνοντες τὰ παρ’ αὐτῶν, ἄξιος γὰρ ὁ ἐργάτης τοῦ μισθοῦ [j]αὐτοῦ. μὴ μεταβαίνετε ἐξ οἰκίας εἰς οἰκίαν. καὶ εἰς ἣν ἂν πόλιν εἰσέρχησθε καὶ δέχωνται ὑμᾶς, ἐσθίετε τὰ παρατιθέμενα ὑμῖν, καὶ θεραπεύετε τοὺς ἐν αὐτῇ ἀσθενεῖς, καὶ λέγετε αὐτοῖς· Ἤγγικεν ἐφ’ ὑμᾶς ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ. 10 εἰς ἣν δ’ ἂν πόλιν [k]εἰσέλθητε καὶ μὴ δέχωνται ὑμᾶς, ἐξελθόντες εἰς τὰς πλατείας αὐτῆς εἴπατε· 11 Καὶ τὸν κονιορτὸν τὸν κολληθέντα ἡμῖν ἐκ τῆς πόλεως ὑμῶν [l]εἰς τοὺς πόδας ἀπομασσόμεθα ὑμῖν· πλὴν τοῦτο γινώσκετε ὅτι [m]ἤγγικεν ἡ βασιλεία τοῦ θεοῦ. 12 λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι Σοδόμοις ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ ἀνεκτότερον ἔσται ἢ τῇ πόλει ἐκείνῃ.

13 Οὐαί σοι, Χοραζίν· οὐαί σοι, Βηθσαϊδά· ὅτι εἰ ἐν Τύρῳ καὶ Σιδῶνι [n]ἐγενήθησαν αἱ δυνάμεις αἱ γενόμεναι ἐν ὑμῖν, πάλαι ἂν ἐν σάκκῳ καὶ σποδῷ [o]καθήμενοι μετενόησαν. 14 πλὴν Τύρῳ καὶ Σιδῶνι ἀνεκτότερον ἔσται ἐν τῇ κρίσει ἢ ὑμῖν. 15 καὶ σύ, Καφαρναούμ, [p]μὴ ἕως οὐρανοῦ ὑψωθήσῃ; ἕως [q]τοῦ ᾅδου [r]καταβιβασθήσῃ.

16 Ὁ ἀκούων ὑμῶν ἐμοῦ ἀκούει, καὶ ὁ ἀθετῶν ὑμᾶς ἐμὲ ἀθετεῖ· ὁ δὲ ἐμὲ ἀθετῶν ἀθετεῖ τὸν ἀποστείλαντά με.

17 Ὑπέστρεψαν δὲ οἱ ἑβδομήκοντα [s]δύο μετὰ χαρᾶς λέγοντες· Κύριε, καὶ τὰ δαιμόνια ὑποτάσσεται ἡμῖν ἐν τῷ ὀνόματί σου. 18 εἶπεν δὲ αὐτοῖς· Ἐθεώρουν τὸν Σατανᾶν ὡς ἀστραπὴν ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ πεσόντα. 19 ἰδοὺ [t]δέδωκα ὑμῖν τὴν ἐξουσίαν τοῦ πατεῖν ἐπάνω ὄφεων καὶ σκορπίων, καὶ ἐπὶ πᾶσαν τὴν δύναμιν τοῦ ἐχθροῦ, καὶ οὐδὲν ὑμᾶς οὐ μὴ [u]ἀδικήσῃ. 20 πλὴν ἐν τούτῳ μὴ χαίρετε ὅτι τὰ πνεύματα ὑμῖν ὑποτάσσεται, χαίρετε δὲ ὅτι τὰ ὀνόματα ὑμῶν [v]ἐγγέγραπται ἐν τοῖς οὐρανοῖς.

21 Ἐν αὐτῇ τῇ ὥρᾳ ἠγαλλιάσατο [w]τῷ πνεύματι [x]τῷ ἁγίῳ καὶ εἶπεν· Ἐξομολογοῦμαί σοι, πάτερ κύριε τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ τῆς γῆς, ὅτι ἀπέκρυψας ταῦτα ἀπὸ σοφῶν καὶ συνετῶν, καὶ ἀπεκάλυψας αὐτὰ νηπίοις· ναί, ὁ πατήρ, ὅτι οὕτως [y]εὐδοκία ἐγένετο ἔμπροσθέν σου. 22 [z]πάντα μοι παρεδόθη ὑπὸ τοῦ πατρός μου, καὶ οὐδεὶς γινώσκει τίς ἐστιν ὁ υἱὸς εἰ μὴ ὁ πατήρ, καὶ τίς ἐστιν ὁ πατὴρ εἰ μὴ ὁ υἱὸς καὶ ᾧ [aa]ἐὰν βούληται ὁ υἱὸς ἀποκαλύψαι.

23 Καὶ στραφεὶς πρὸς τοὺς μαθητὰς κατ’ ἰδίαν εἶπεν· Μακάριοι οἱ ὀφθαλμοὶ οἱ βλέποντες ἃ βλέπετε. 24 λέγω γὰρ ὑμῖν ὅτι πολλοὶ προφῆται καὶ βασιλεῖς ἠθέλησαν ἰδεῖν ἃ ὑμεῖς βλέπετε καὶ οὐκ εἶδαν, καὶ ἀκοῦσαι ἃ ἀκούετε καὶ οὐκ ἤκουσαν.

25 Καὶ ἰδοὺ νομικός τις ἀνέστη ἐκπειράζων [ab]αὐτὸν λέγων· Διδάσκαλε, τί ποιήσας ζωὴν αἰώνιον κληρονομήσω; 26 ὁ δὲ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτόν· Ἐν τῷ νόμῳ τί γέγραπται; πῶς ἀναγινώσκεις; 27 ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν· Ἀγαπήσεις κύριον τὸν θεόν σου ἐξ ὅλης [ac]τῆς καρδίας σου καὶ [ad]ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ ψυχῇ σου καὶ [ae]ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ ἰσχύϊ σου καὶ [af]ἐν ὅλῃ τῇ διανοίᾳ σου, καὶ τὸν πλησίον σου ὡς σεαυτόν. 28 εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ· Ὀρθῶς ἀπεκρίθης· τοῦτο ποίει καὶ ζήσῃ.

29 Ὁ δὲ θέλων [ag]δικαιῶσαι ἑαυτὸν εἶπεν πρὸς τὸν Ἰησοῦν· Καὶ τίς ἐστίν μου πλησίον; 30 ὑπολαβὼν [ah]δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν· Ἄνθρωπός τις κατέβαινεν ἀπὸ Ἰερουσαλὴμ εἰς Ἰεριχὼ καὶ λῃσταῖς περιέπεσεν, οἳ καὶ ἐκδύσαντες αὐτὸν καὶ πληγὰς ἐπιθέντες ἀπῆλθον ἀφέντες [ai]ἡμιθανῆ. 31 κατὰ συγκυρίαν δὲ ἱερεύς τις κατέβαινεν ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ ἐκείνῃ, καὶ ἰδὼν αὐτὸν ἀντιπαρῆλθεν· 32 ὁμοίως δὲ καὶ [aj]Λευίτης κατὰ τὸν τόπον ἐλθὼν καὶ ἰδὼν ἀντιπαρῆλθεν. 33 Σαμαρίτης δέ τις ὁδεύων ἦλθεν κατ’ αὐτὸν καὶ [ak]ἰδὼν ἐσπλαγχνίσθη, 34 καὶ προσελθὼν κατέδησεν τὰ τραύματα αὐτοῦ ἐπιχέων ἔλαιον καὶ οἶνον, ἐπιβιβάσας δὲ αὐτὸν ἐπὶ τὸ ἴδιον κτῆνος ἤγαγεν αὐτὸν εἰς πανδοχεῖον καὶ ἐπεμελήθη αὐτοῦ. 35 καὶ ἐπὶ τὴν [al]αὔριον ἐκβαλὼν [am]δύο δηνάρια ἔδωκεν τῷ πανδοχεῖ καὶ [an]εἶπεν· Ἐπιμελήθητι αὐτοῦ, καὶ ὅ τι ἂν προσδαπανήσῃς ἐγὼ ἐν τῷ ἐπανέρχεσθαί με ἀποδώσω σοι. 36 [ao]τίς τούτων τῶν τριῶν πλησίον δοκεῖ σοι γεγονέναι τοῦ ἐμπεσόντος εἰς τοὺς λῃστάς; 37 ὁ δὲ εἶπεν· Ὁ ποιήσας τὸ ἔλεος μετ’ αὐτοῦ. εἶπεν [ap]δὲ αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Πορεύου καὶ σὺ ποίει ὁμοίως.

Die Aussendung der zweiundsiebzig Jünger

10 Danach bestimmte der Herr zweiundsiebzig[a] andere Jünger und schickte sie zu zweit voraus in alle Städte und Ortschaften, die er später selbst aufsuchen wollte. Er sagte zu ihnen: »Die Ernte ist groß, doch es sind nur wenig Arbeiter da. Bittet deshalb den Herrn der Ernte, dass er Arbeiter auf sein Erntefeld schickt. Geht nun! Seht, ich sende euch wie Schafe mitten unter die Wölfe. Nehmt keinen Geldbeutel mit, keine Vorratstasche und keine Sandalen[b]. Haltet euch unterwegs nicht mit langen Begrüßungen auf.[c]

Wenn ihr ein Haus betretet, sagt als Erstes: ›Friede sei mit diesem Haus!‹ Wenn dort jemand bereit ist, den Frieden zu empfangen, den ihr bringt, wird der Frieden auf ihm bleiben[d]; wenn aber nicht, wird der Frieden zu euch zurückkehren. Bleibt in dem Haus, in dem man euch aufnimmt. Esst und trinkt, was man euch dort gibt; denn wer arbeitet, hat Anrecht auf seinen Lohn. Geht nicht von Haus zu Haus, um eine andere Unterkunft zu suchen.

Wenn ihr in eine Stadt kommt und man euch aufnimmt, dann esst, was man euch anbietet. Heilt die Kranken, die dort sind, und verkündet den Bewohnern der Stadt: ›Das Reich Gottes ist zu euch gekommen[e].‹ 10 Wenn ihr aber in eine Stadt kommt und man euch nicht aufnimmt, dann geht durch ihre Straßen und ruft: 11 ›Selbst den Staub, der sich in eurer Stadt an unsere Füße geheftet hat, wischen wir ab, damit ihr gewarnt seid[f]. Aber das sollt ihr wissen: Das Reich Gottes ist gekommen[g].‹ 12 Ich sage euch: Sodom wird es am Tag des Gerichts[h] noch erträglich gehen im Vergleich zu solch einer Stadt.

13 Weh dir, Chorazin! Weh dir, Betsaida! Wenn in Tyrus und Sidon die Wunder geschehen wären, die bei euch geschehen sind – die Menschen dort hätten sich längst in Sacktuch ´gehüllt`[i] und in Asche gesetzt und wären ´zu Gott` umgekehrt. 14 Tyrus und Sidon – so viel steht fest – wird es im Gericht noch erträglich gehen im Vergleich zu euch. 15 Und du, Kafarnaum, meinst du etwa, du wirst zum Himmel emporgehoben werden? Ins Totenreich[j] musst du hinunter[k]!

16 Wer auf euch hört, hört auf mich, und wer euch ablehnt, lehnt mich ab. Wer aber mich ablehnt, lehnt den ab, der mich gesandt hat.«

Die Freude der Jünger und die Freude Jesu

17 Die zweiundsiebzig Jünger kehrten voller Freude zurück. »Herr«, sagten sie, »sogar die Dämonen müssen uns gehorchen, wenn wir uns auf deinen Namen berufen!« 18 Da sagte Jesus zu ihnen: »Ich sah den Satan wie einen Blitz vom Himmel fallen. 19 Es ist wahr[l], ich habe euch Vollmacht gegeben, auf Schlangen und Skorpione zu treten und die ganze Macht des Feindes zu überwinden, und nichts wird euch[m] schaden können. 20 Doch nicht darüber sollt ihr euch freuen, dass euch die Geister gehorchen. Freut euch vielmehr, dass eure Namen im Himmel aufgeschrieben sind.«

21 Nun[n] begann Jesus, im Heiligen Geist vor Freude zu jubeln; er rief: »Ich preise dich, Vater, du Herr über Himmel und Erde, dass du das alles den Weisen und Klugen verborgen, den Unmündigen aber offenbart hast. Ja, Vater, so hast du es gewollt, und dafür preise ich dich.[o] 22 Alles hat mir mein Vater übergeben. Niemand weiß, wer der Sohn ist, nur der Vater; und niemand weiß, wer der Vater ist, nur der Sohn – und die, denen der Sohn es offenbaren will.«

23 Dann wandte sich Jesus wieder zu den Jüngern, nahm sie beiseite und sagte[p]: »Glücklich zu preisen sind die[q], die das sehen, was ihr seht! 24 Denn ich sage euch: Viele Propheten und Könige hätten gern gesehen, was ihr seht, und haben es nicht gesehen; sie hätten gern gehört, was ihr hört, und haben es nicht gehört.«

Das Liebesgebot und das Beispiel des barmherzigen Samaritaners

25 Ein Gesetzeslehrer wollte[r] Jesus auf die Probe stellen. »Meister«, fragte er, »was muss ich tun, um das ewige Leben zu bekommen[s] 26 Jesus entgegnete: »Was steht im Gesetz? Was liest du dort?« 27 Er antwortete: »›Du sollst den Herrn, deinen Gott, lieben von ganzem Herzen, mit ganzer Hingabe[t], mit aller deiner Kraft und mit deinem ganzen Verstand!‹[u] Und: ›Du sollst deine Mitmenschen lieben wie dich selbst!‹[v]« – 28 »Du hast richtig geantwortet«, sagte Jesus. »Tu das, und du wirst leben.«

29 Der Gesetzeslehrer wollte sich verteidigen[w]; deshalb fragte er: »Und wer ist mein Mitmensch?«

30 Daraufhin erzählte Jesus folgende Geschichte: »Ein Mann ging von Jerusalem nach Jericho hinunter. Unterwegs wurde er von Wegelagerern überfallen. Sie plünderten ihn bis aufs Hemd aus[x], schlugen ihn zusammen und ließen ihn halbtot liegen; dann machten sie sich davon. 31 Zufällig kam ein Priester denselben Weg herab. Er sah den Mann liegen, machte einen Bogen um ihn und ging weiter. 32 Genauso verhielt sich ein Levit, der dort vorbeikam und den Mann liegen sah; auch er machte einen Bogen um ihn und ging weiter. 33 Schließlich kam ein Reisender aus Samarien dort vorbei. Als er den Mann sah, hatte er Mitleid mit ihm. 34 Er ging zu ihm hin, goss Öl und Wein auf seine Wunden und verband sie. Dann setzte er ihn auf sein eigenes Reittier, brachte ihn in ein Gasthaus und versorgte ihn mit allem Nötigen. 35 Am nächsten Morgen nahm er zwei Denare aus seinem Beutel und gab sie dem Wirt. ›Sorge für ihn!‹, sagte er. ›Und sollte das Geld nicht ausreichen, werde ich dir den Rest bezahlen, wenn ich auf der Rückreise hier vorbeikomme.‹«

36 »Was meinst du?«, fragte Jesus den Gesetzeslehrer. »Wer von den dreien hat an dem, der den Wegelagerern in die Hände fiel, als Mitmensch gehandelt?« 37 Er antwortete: »Der, der Erbarmen mit ihm hatte und ihm geholfen hat.« Da sagte Jesus zu ihm: »Dann geh und mach es ebenso!«

Maria und Martha

38 Als Jesus mit seinen Jüngern weiterzog, kam er in ein Dorf, wo ihn eine Frau mit Namen Martha in ihr Haus einlud. 39 Sie hatte eine Schwester, die Maria hieß. Maria setzte sich dem Herrn zu Füßen und hörte ihm[y] zu. 40 Martha hingegen machte sich viel Arbeit, um für das Wohl ihrer Gäste zu sorgen.[z] Schließlich stellte sie sich vor Jesus hin und sagte: »Herr, findest du es richtig, dass meine Schwester mich die ganze Arbeit[aa] allein tun lässt? Sag ihr doch, sie soll mir helfen!« – 41 »Martha, Martha«, erwiderte der Herr, »du bist wegen so vielem in Sorge und Unruhe, 42 aber notwendig ist nur eines[ab]. Maria hat das Bessere[ac] gewählt, und das soll ihr nicht genommen werden.«

Chapter 10

The Mission of the Seventy-Two[a] After this, the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to every town and place he intended to visit. He said to them: “The harvest is abundant, but the laborers are few. Therefore, ask the Lord of the harvest to send forth laborers for his harvest.

“Go on your way. Behold, I am sending you out like lambs among wolves. Carry no money bag or sack and wear no sandals. Greet no one on the road. Whatever house you enter, let your first words be, ‘Peace to this house!’ If a man of peace lives there, your peace will rest on him; if not, it will return to you.

“Remain in the same house, and eat and drink whatever is offered to you, for the laborer deserves his wages. Do not move around from house to house. Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat whatever is set before you. Cure the sick who are there, and say, ‘The kingdom of God has come unto you.’

10 “But whenever you enter a town and the people do not welcome you, go out into the streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your town that clings to us we wipe off our feet as a sign against you. Yet know this: the kingdom of God is at hand.’ 12 I tell you, on that day[b] it will be more bearable for Sodom than for that town.

13 Woe to the Cities of Galilee.[c]“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! If the mighty deeds performed in your midst had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have come to repentance long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 14 But at the judgment it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon than for you. 15 And as for you, Capernaum:

Will you be exalted to heaven?
You will be brought down to the netherworld.[d]

16 “Whoever listens to you listens to me, and whoever rejects you rejects me. And whoever rejects me rejects the one who sent me.”

17 Joy of the Missionaries.[e] The seventy-two returned rejoicing, and they said, “Lord, in your name even the demons are subject to us.” 18 He said to them, “I watched Satan fall from heaven like lightning. 19 Behold, I have given you the power to tread upon snakes and scorpions and all the forces of the enemy, and nothing will ever harm you. 20 Nevertheless, do not rejoice in the knowledge that the spirits are subject to you. Rejoice rather that your names are inscribed in heaven.”

21 Joy of Jesus.[f]At that very hour, Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned and have revealed them to children. Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will.

22 “All things have been entrusted to me by my Father. No one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.”

23 The Privilege of Discipleship. Then he turned to his disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. 24 I tell you, many prophets and kings desired to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”

25 The Greatest Commandment.[g]And behold, a lawyer came forward to test Jesus by asking, “Teacher, what must I do to gain eternal life?” 26 Jesus said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” 27 He answered, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.” 28 Jesus then said to him, “You have answered correctly. Do this and you will live.”

29 The Parable of the Good Samaritan. But because the man wished to justify himself, he asked, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 Jesus replied, “A man was going down[h] from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him and beat him, and then went off leaving him half-dead. 31 A priest happened to be traveling along that same road, but when he saw him he passed by on the other side. 32 A Levite[i] likewise came to that spot and saw him, but he too passed by on the other side.

33 “But a Samaritan who was traveling along that road came upon him, and when he saw him he was moved with compassion. 34 He went up to him and bandaged his wounds after having poured oil and wine on them. Then he brought him upon his own animal to an inn and looked after him.

35 “The next day, he took out two denarii[j] and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Look after him, and when I return I will repay you for anything more you might spend.’

36 “Which of those three, do you think, was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers?” 37 He answered, “The one who showed him mercy.” Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.”[k]

38 Martha and Mary.[l] In the course of their journey, he came to a village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. 39 She had a sister named Mary who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to what he was saying.

40 But Martha was distracted by her many tasks. So she came to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to do all the work by myself? Tell her to come and help me.” 41 The Lord answered her: “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and upset about many things, 42 when only one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the better part, and it will not be taken away from her.”

In this passage, Luke brings together various recommendations of Jesus in order to draw up a program for the missionaries.
