Ministering Women

8 Soon afterwards, He began going around from one city and village to another, (A)proclaiming and preaching the kingdom of God. The twelve were with Him, 2 and also (B)some women who had been healed of evil spirits and sicknesses: (C)Mary who was called Magdalene, from whom seven demons had gone out, 3 and Joanna the wife of Chuza, (D)Herod’s (E)steward, and Susanna, and many others who were contributing to their support out of their private means.

Parable of the Sower

4 (F)When a large crowd was coming together, and those from the various cities were journeying to Him, He spoke by way of a parable: 5 “The sower went out to sow his seed; and as he sowed, some fell beside the road, and it was trampled under foot and the birds of the [a]air ate it up. 6 Other seed fell on rocky soil, and as soon as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. 7 Other seed fell among the thorns; and the thorns grew up with it and choked it out. 8 Other seed fell into the good soil, and grew up, and produced a crop a hundred times as great.” As He said these things, He would call out, “(G)He who has ears to hear, [b]let him hear.”

9 (H)His disciples began questioning Him as to what this parable meant. 10 And He said, “(I)To you it has been granted to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to the rest it is in parables, so that (J)seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.

11 “Now the parable is this: (K)the seed is the word of God. 12 Those beside the road are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their heart, so that they will not believe and be saved. 13 Those on the rocky soil are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no firm root; [c]they believe for a while, and in time of temptation fall away. 14 The seed which fell among the thorns, these are the ones who have heard, and as they go on their way they are choked with worries and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to maturity. 15 But the seed in the good soil, these are the ones who have heard the word in an honest and good heart, and hold it fast, and bear fruit with [d]perseverance.

Parable of the Lamp

16 “Now (L)no one after lighting a lamp covers it over with a container, or puts it under a bed; but he puts it on a lampstand, so that those who come in may see the light. 17 (M)For nothing is hidden that will not become evident, nor anything secret that will not be known and come to light. 18 So take care how you listen; (N)for whoever has, to him more shall be given; and whoever does not have, even what he [e]thinks he has shall be taken away from him.”

19 (O)And His mother and brothers came to Him, and they were unable to get to Him because of the crowd. 20 And it was reported to Him, “Your mother and Your brothers are standing outside, wishing to see You.” 21 But He answered and said to them, “My mother and My brothers are these (P)who hear the word of God and do it.”

Jesus Stills the Sea

22 (Q)Now on one of those days Jesus and His disciples got into a boat, and He said to them, “Let us go over to the other side of (R)the lake.” So they launched out. 23 But as they were sailing along He fell asleep; and a fierce gale of wind descended on (S)the lake, and they began to be swamped and to be in danger. 24 They came to Jesus and woke Him up, saying, “(T)Master, Master, we are perishing!” And He got up and (U)rebuked the wind and the surging waves, and they stopped, and [f]it became calm. 25 And He said to them, “Where is your faith?” They were fearful and amazed, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him?”

The Demoniac Cured

26 (V)Then they sailed to the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee. 27 And when He came out onto the land, He was met by a man from the city who was possessed with demons; and who had not put on any clothing for a long time, and was not living in a house, but in the tombs. 28 Seeing Jesus, he cried out and fell before Him, and said in a loud voice, “[g](W)What business do we have with each other, Jesus, Son of (X)the Most High God? I beg You, do not torment me.” 29 For He had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. For it had seized him many times; and he was bound with chains and shackles and kept under guard, and yet he would break his bonds and be driven by the demon into the desert. 30 And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “(Y)Legion”; for many demons had entered him. 31 They were imploring Him not to command them to go away into (Z)the abyss.

32 Now there was a herd of many swine feeding there on the mountain; and the demons implored Him to permit them to enter [h]the swine. And He gave them permission. 33 And the demons came out of the man and entered the swine; and the herd rushed down the steep bank into (AA)the lake and was drowned.

34 When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they ran away and reported it in the city and out in the country. 35 The people went out to see what had happened; and they came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting down (AB)at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind; and they became frightened. 36 Those who had seen it reported to them how the man who was (AC)demon-possessed had been [i]made well. 37 And all the people of the country of the Gerasenes and the surrounding district asked Him to leave them, for they were gripped with great fear; and He got into a boat and returned. 38 (AD)But the man from whom the demons had gone out was begging Him that he might [j]accompany Him; but He sent him away, saying, 39 “Return to your house and describe what great things God has done for you.” So he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city what great things Jesus had done for him.

Miracles of Healing

40 (AE)And as Jesus returned, the [k]people welcomed Him, for they had all been waiting for Him. 41 (AF)And there came a man named Jairus, and he was an [l](AG)official of the synagogue; and he fell at Jesus’ feet, and began to implore Him to come to his house; 42 for he had an [m]only daughter, about twelve years old, and she was dying. But as He went, the crowds were pressing against Him.

43 And a woman who had a hemorrhage for twelve years, and could not be healed by anyone, 44 came up behind Him and touched the fringe of His [n]cloak, and immediately her hemorrhage stopped. 45 And Jesus said, “Who is the one who touched Me?” And while they were all denying it, Peter said, “(AH)Master, the [o]people are crowding and pressing in on You.” 46 But Jesus said, “Someone did touch Me, for I was aware that (AI)power had gone out of Me.” 47 When the woman saw that she had not escaped notice, she came trembling and fell down before Him, and declared in the presence of all the people the reason why she had touched Him, and how she had been immediately healed. 48 And He said to her, “Daughter, (AJ)your faith has [p]made you well; (AK)go in peace.”

49 While He was still speaking, someone *came from the house of (AL)the synagogue official, saying, “Your daughter has died; do not trouble the Teacher anymore.” 50 But when Jesus heard this, He answered him, “(AM)Do not be afraid any longer; only believe, and she will be [q]made well.” 51 When He came to the house, He did not allow anyone to enter with Him, except Peter and John and James, and the girl’s father and mother. 52 Now they were all weeping and (AN)lamenting for her; but He said, “Stop weeping, for she has not died, but (AO)is asleep.” 53 And they began laughing at Him, knowing that she had died. 54 He, however, took her by the hand and called, saying, “Child, arise!” 55 And her spirit returned, and she got up immediately; and He gave orders for something to be given her to eat. 56 Her parents were amazed; but He (AP)instructed them to tell no one what had happened.

Ministry of the Twelve

9 (AQ)And He called the twelve together, and gave them power and authority over all the demons and to heal diseases. 2 And He sent them out to (AR)proclaim the kingdom of God and to perform healing. 3 And He said to them, “(AS)Take nothing for your journey, (AT)neither a staff, nor a [r]bag, nor bread, nor money; and do not even have [s]two tunics apiece. 4 Whatever house you enter, stay there [t]until you leave that city. 5 And as for those who do not receive you, as you go out from that city, (AU)shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.” 6 Departing, they began going [u]throughout the villages, (AV)preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.

7 (AW)Now (AX)Herod the tetrarch heard of all that was happening; and he was greatly perplexed, because it was said by some that (AY)John had risen from the dead, 8 and by some that (AZ)Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the prophets of old had risen again. 9 Herod said, “I myself had John beheaded; but who is this man about whom I hear such things?” And (BA)he kept trying to see Him.

10 (BB)When the apostles returned, they gave an account to Him of all that they had done. (BC)Taking them with Him, He withdrew by Himself to a city called (BD)Bethsaida. 11 But the crowds were aware of this and followed Him; and welcoming them, He began speaking to them about the kingdom of God and curing those who had need of healing.

Five Thousand Fed

12 Now the day [v]was ending, and the twelve came and said to Him, “Send the crowd away, that they may go into the surrounding villages and countryside and find lodging and get [w]something to eat; for here we are in a desolate place.” 13 But He said to them, “You give them something to eat!” And they said, “We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless perhaps we go and buy food for all these people.” 14 (For there were about five thousand men.) And He said to His disciples, “Have them [x]sit down to eat (BE)in groups of about fifty each.” 15 They did so, and had them all [y]sit down. 16 Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed them, and broke them, and kept giving them to the disciples to set before the [z]people. 17 And they all ate and were satisfied; and [aa]the broken pieces which they had left over were picked up, twelve (BF)baskets full.

18 (BG)And it happened that while He was (BH)praying alone, the disciples were with Him, and He questioned them, saying, “Who do the [ab]people say that I am?” 19 They answered and said, “John the Baptist, and others say Elijah; but others, that one of the prophets of old has risen again.” 20 And He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” And Peter answered and said, “(BI)The [ac]Christ of God.” 21 But He [ad](BJ)warned them and instructed them not to tell this to anyone, 22 (BK)saying, “(BL)The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed and be raised up on the third day.”

23 And He was saying to them all, “(BM)If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me. 24 For (BN)whoever wishes to save his [ae]life will lose it, but whoever loses his [af]life for My sake, he is the one who will save it. 25 For what is a man profited if he gains the whole world, and (BO)loses or forfeits himself? 26 (BP)For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His glory, and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels. 27 But I say to you truthfully, (BQ)there are some of those standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.”

The Transfiguration

28 (BR)Some eight days after these sayings, He took along (BS)Peter and John and James, and (BT)went up on the mountain (BU)to pray. 29 And while He was (BV)praying, the appearance of His face (BW)became different, and His clothing became white and [ag]gleaming. 30 And behold, two men were talking with Him; and they were Moses and Elijah, 31 who, appearing in [ah]glory, were speaking of His (BX)departure which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem. 32 Now Peter and his companions (BY)had been overcome with sleep; but when they were fully awake, they saw His glory and the two men standing with Him. 33 And as [ai]these were leaving Him, Peter said to Jesus, “(BZ)Master, it is good for us to be here; (CA)let us make three [aj]tabernacles: one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah”—(CB)not realizing what he was saying. 34 While he was saying this, a cloud [ak]formed and began to overshadow them; and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 Then (CC)a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “(CD)This is My Son, My Chosen One; listen to Him!” 36 And when the voice [al]had spoken, Jesus was found alone. And (CE)they kept silent, and reported to no one in those days any of the things which they had seen.

37 (CF)On the next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met Him. 38 And a man from the crowd shouted, saying, “Teacher, I beg You to look at my son, for he is my [am]only boy, 39 and a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly screams, and it throws him into a convulsion with foaming at the mouth; and only with difficulty does it leave him, mauling him as it leaves. 40 I begged Your disciples to cast it out, and they could not.” 41 And Jesus answered and said, “You unbelieving and perverted generation, how long shall I be with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.” 42 While he was still approaching, the demon [an]slammed him to the ground and threw him into a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the boy and gave him back to his father. 43 And they were all amazed at the [ao](CG)greatness of God.

(CH)But while everyone was marveling at all that He was doing, He said to His disciples, 44 “Let these words sink into your ears; (CI)for the Son of Man is going to be [ap]delivered into the hands of men.” 45 But (CJ)they [aq]did not understand this statement, and it was concealed from them so that they would not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask Him about this statement.

The Test of Greatness

46 (CK)An argument [ar]started among them as to which of them might be the greatest. 47 But Jesus, (CL)knowing [as]what they were thinking in their heart, took a child and stood him by His side, 48 and said to them, “(CM)Whoever receives this child in My name receives Me, and whoever receives Me receives Him who sent Me; (CN)for the one who is least among all of you, this is the one who is great.”

49 (CO)John answered and said, “(CP)Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name; and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow along with us.” 50 But Jesus said to him, “Do not hinder him; (CQ)for he who is not against you is [at]for you.”

51 When the days were approaching for (CR)His [au]ascension, He [av]was determined (CS)to go to Jerusalem; 52 and He sent messengers on ahead of Him, and they went and entered a village of the (CT)Samaritans to [aw]make arrangements for Him. 53 But they did not receive Him, (CU)because [ax]He was traveling toward Jerusalem. 54 When His disciples (CV)James and John saw this, they said, “Lord, do You want us to (CW)command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” 55 But He turned and rebuked them, [[ay]and said, “You do not know what kind of spirit you are of; 56 for the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.”] And they went on to another village.

Exacting Discipleship

57 (CX)As they were going along the road, (CY)someone said to Him, “I will follow You wherever You go.” 58 And Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes and the birds of the [az]air have [ba]nests, but (CZ)the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” 59 And He said to another, “(DA)Follow Me.” But he said, “Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father.” 60 But He said to him, “Allow the dead to bury their own dead; but as for you, go and (DB)proclaim everywhere the kingdom of God.” 61 Another also said, “I will follow You, Lord; but (DC)first permit me to say good-bye to those at home.” 62 But Jesus said to him, “(DD)No one, after putting his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”

The Seventy Sent Out

10 Now after this (DE)the Lord appointed [bb]seventy (DF)others, and sent them (DG)in pairs ahead of Him to every city and place where He Himself was going to come. 2 And He was saying to them, “(DH)The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest. 3 Go; (DI)behold, I send you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. 4 (DJ)Carry no money belt, no [bc]bag, no shoes; and greet no one on the way. 5 Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house.’ 6 If a [bd]man of peace is there, your peace will rest on him; but if not, it will return to you. 7 Stay in [be]that house, eating and drinking [bf]what they give you; for (DK)the laborer is worthy of his wages. Do not keep moving from house to house. 8 Whatever city you enter and they receive you, (DL)eat what is set before you; 9 and heal those in it who are sick, and say to them, ‘(DM)The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ 10 But whatever city you enter and they do not receive you, go out into its streets and say, 11 ‘(DN)Even the dust of your city which clings to our feet we wipe off in protest against you; yet [bg]be sure of this, that (DO)the kingdom of God has come near.’ 12 I say to you, (DP)it will be more tolerable in that day for (DQ)Sodom than for that city.

13 “(DR)Woe to you, (DS)Chorazin! Woe to you, (DT)Bethsaida! For if the [bh]miracles had been performed in (DU)Tyre and Sidon which occurred in you, they would have repented long ago, sitting in [bi](DV)sackcloth and ashes. 14 But it will be more tolerable for (DW)Tyre and Sidon in the judgment than for you. 15 And you, (DX)Capernaum, will not be exalted to heaven, will you? You will be brought down to Hades!

16 “(DY)The one who listens to you listens to Me, and (DZ)the one who rejects you rejects Me; and he who rejects Me rejects the One who sent Me.”

The Happy Results

17 The [bj]seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even (EA)the demons are subject to us in Your name.” 18 And He said to them, “I was watching (EB)Satan fall from heaven like lightning. 19 Behold, I have given you authority to (EC)tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing will injure you. 20 Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that (ED)your names are recorded in heaven.”

21 (EE)At that very [bk]time He rejoiced greatly in the Holy Spirit, and said, “I [bl]praise You, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and have revealed them to infants. Yes, Father, for this way was well-pleasing in Your sight. 22 (EF)All things have been handed over to Me by My Father, and (EG)no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal Him.”

23 (EH)Turning to the disciples, He said privately, “Blessed are the eyes which see the things you see, 24 for I say to you, that many prophets and kings wished to see the things which you see, and did not see them, and to hear the things which you hear, and did not hear them.”

25 (EI)And a [bm](EJ)lawyer stood up and put Him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 And He said to him, “What is written in the Law? [bn]How does it read to you?” 27 And he answered, “(EK)You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.” 28 And He said to him, “You have answered correctly; (EL)do this and you will live.” 29 But wishing (EM)to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

The Good Samaritan

30 Jesus replied and said, “A man was (EN)going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, and they stripped him and [bo]beat him, and went away leaving him half dead. 31 And by chance a priest was going down on that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 Likewise a Levite also, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a (EO)Samaritan, who was on a journey, came upon him; and when he saw him, he felt compassion, 34 and came to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them; and he put him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 On the next day he took out two [bp]denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I return I will repay you.’ 36 Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the robbers’ hands?” 37 And he said, “The one who showed mercy toward him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do [bq]the same.”

Martha and Mary

38 Now as they were traveling along, He entered a village; and a woman named (EP)Martha welcomed Him into her home. 39 She had a sister called (EQ)Mary, who was (ER)seated at the Lord’s feet, listening to His word. 40 But (ES)Martha was distracted with [br]all her preparations; and she came up to Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to do all the serving alone? Then tell her to help me.” 41 But the Lord answered and said to her, “(ET)Martha, Martha, you are (EU)worried and bothered about so many things; 42 (EV)but only one thing is necessary, for (EW)Mary has chosen the good part, which shall not be taken away from her.”

The Parable of the Sower(A)

8 After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God.(B) The Twelve were with him, 2 and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene)(C) from whom seven demons had come out; 3 Joanna the wife of Chuza, the manager of Herod’s(D) household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.

4 While a large crowd was gathering and people were coming to Jesus from town after town, he told this parable: 5 “A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds ate it up. 6 Some fell on rocky ground, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants. 8 Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown.”

When he said this, he called out, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”(E)

9 His disciples asked him what this parable meant. 10 He said, “The knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of God has been given to you,(F) but to others I speak in parables, so that,

“‘though seeing, they may not see;
    though hearing, they may not understand.’[a](G)

11 “This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God.(H) 12 Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. 13 Those on the rocky ground are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away.(I) 14 The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches(J) and pleasures, and they do not mature. 15 But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.

A Lamp on a Stand

16 “No one lights a lamp and hides it in a clay jar or puts it under a bed. Instead, they put it on a stand, so that those who come in can see the light.(K) 17 For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open.(L) 18 Therefore consider carefully how you listen. Whoever has will be given more; whoever does not have, even what they think they have will be taken from them.”(M)

Jesus’ Mother and Brothers(N)

19 Now Jesus’ mother and brothers came to see him, but they were not able to get near him because of the crowd. 20 Someone told him, “Your mother and brothers(O) are standing outside, wanting to see you.”

21 He replied, “My mother and brothers are those who hear God’s word and put it into practice.”(P)

Jesus Calms the Storm(Q)(R)

22 One day Jesus said to his disciples, “Let us go over to the other side of the lake.” So they got into a boat and set out. 23 As they sailed, he fell asleep. A squall came down on the lake, so that the boat was being swamped, and they were in great danger.

24 The disciples went and woke him, saying, “Master, Master,(S) we’re going to drown!”

He got up and rebuked(T) the wind and the raging waters; the storm subsided, and all was calm.(U) 25 “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples.

In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.”

Jesus Restores a Demon-Possessed Man(V)(W)

26 They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes,[b] which is across the lake from Galilee. 27 When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs. 28 When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me,(X) Jesus, Son of the Most High God?(Y) I beg you, don’t torture me!” 29 For Jesus had commanded the impure spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places.

30 Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”

“Legion,” he replied, because many demons had gone into him. 31 And they begged Jesus repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss.(Z)

32 A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into the pigs, and he gave them permission. 33 When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake(AA) and was drowned.

34 When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, 35 and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus’ feet,(AB) dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 36 Those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed(AC) man had been cured. 37 Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them,(AD) because they were overcome with fear. So he got into the boat and left.

38 The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39 “Return home and tell how much God has done for you.” So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him.

Jesus Raises a Dead Girl and Heals a Sick Woman(AE)

40 Now when Jesus returned, a crowd welcomed him, for they were all expecting him. 41 Then a man named Jairus, a synagogue leader,(AF) came and fell at Jesus’ feet, pleading with him to come to his house 42 because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying.

As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him. 43 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding(AG) for twelve years,[c] but no one could heal her. 44 She came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak,(AH) and immediately her bleeding stopped.

45 “Who touched me?” Jesus asked.

When they all denied it, Peter said, “Master,(AI) the people are crowding and pressing against you.”

46 But Jesus said, “Someone touched me;(AJ) I know that power has gone out from me.”(AK)

47 Then the woman, seeing that she could not go unnoticed, came trembling and fell at his feet. In the presence of all the people, she told why she had touched him and how she had been instantly healed. 48 Then he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you.(AL) Go in peace.”(AM)

49 While Jesus was still speaking, someone came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader.(AN) “Your daughter is dead,” he said. “Don’t bother the teacher anymore.”

50 Hearing this, Jesus said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid; just believe, and she will be healed.”

51 When he arrived at the house of Jairus, he did not let anyone go in with him except Peter, John and James,(AO) and the child’s father and mother. 52 Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning(AP) for her. “Stop wailing,” Jesus said. “She is not dead but asleep.”(AQ)

53 They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead. 54 But he took her by the hand and said, “My child, get up!”(AR) 55 Her spirit returned, and at once she stood up. Then Jesus told them to give her something to eat. 56 Her parents were astonished, but he ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened.(AS)

Jesus Sends Out the Twelve(AT)(AU)

9 When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons(AV) and to cure diseases,(AW) 2 and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God(AX) and to heal the sick. 3 He told them: “Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt.(AY) 4 Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave that town. 5 If people do not welcome you, leave their town and shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against them.”(AZ) 6 So they set out and went from village to village, proclaiming the good news and healing people everywhere.

7 Now Herod(BA) the tetrarch heard about all that was going on. And he was perplexed because some were saying that John(BB) had been raised from the dead,(BC) 8 others that Elijah had appeared,(BD) and still others that one of the prophets of long ago had come back to life.(BE) 9 But Herod said, “I beheaded John. Who, then, is this I hear such things about?” And he tried to see him.(BF)

Jesus Feeds the Five Thousand(BG)(BH)

10 When the apostles(BI) returned, they reported to Jesus what they had done. Then he took them with him and they withdrew by themselves to a town called Bethsaida,(BJ) 11 but the crowds learned about it and followed him. He welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God,(BK) and healed those who needed healing.

12 Late in the afternoon the Twelve came to him and said, “Send the crowd away so they can go to the surrounding villages and countryside and find food and lodging, because we are in a remote place here.”

13 He replied, “You give them something to eat.”

They answered, “We have only five loaves of bread and two fish—unless we go and buy food for all this crowd.” 14 (About five thousand men were there.)

But he said to his disciples, “Have them sit down in groups of about fifty each.” 15 The disciples did so, and everyone sat down. 16 Taking the five loaves and the two fish and looking up to heaven, he gave thanks and broke them.(BL) Then he gave them to the disciples to distribute to the people. 17 They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over.

Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah(BM)(BN)

18 Once when Jesus was praying(BO) in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say I am?”

19 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist;(BP) others say Elijah; and still others, that one of the prophets of long ago has come back to life.”(BQ)

20 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

Peter answered, “God’s Messiah.”(BR)

Jesus Predicts His Death

21 Jesus strictly warned them not to tell this to anyone.(BS) 22 And he said, “The Son of Man(BT) must suffer many things(BU) and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests and the teachers of the law,(BV) and he must be killed(BW) and on the third day(BX) be raised to life.”(BY)

23 Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.(BZ) 24 For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.(CA) 25 What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit their very self? 26 Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them(CB) when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.(CC)

27 “Truly I tell you, some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.”

The Transfiguration(CD)

28 About eight days after Jesus said this, he took Peter, John and James(CE) with him and went up onto a mountain to pray.(CF) 29 As he was praying, the appearance of his face changed, and his clothes became as bright as a flash of lightning. 30 Two men, Moses and Elijah, appeared in glorious splendor, talking with Jesus. 31 They spoke about his departure,[d](CG) which he was about to bring to fulfillment at Jerusalem. 32 Peter and his companions were very sleepy,(CH) but when they became fully awake, they saw his glory and the two men standing with him. 33 As the men were leaving Jesus, Peter said to him, “Master,(CI) it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters—one for you, one for Moses and one for Elijah.” (He did not know what he was saying.)

34 While he was speaking, a cloud appeared and covered them, and they were afraid as they entered the cloud. 35 A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen;(CJ) listen to him.”(CK) 36 When the voice had spoken, they found that Jesus was alone. The disciples kept this to themselves and did not tell anyone at that time what they had seen.(CL)

Jesus Heals a Demon-Possessed Boy(CM)

37 The next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met him. 38 A man in the crowd called out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child. 39 A spirit seizes him and he suddenly screams; it throws him into convulsions so that he foams at the mouth. It scarcely ever leaves him and is destroying him. 40 I begged your disciples to drive it out, but they could not.”

41 “You unbelieving and perverse generation,”(CN) Jesus replied, “how long shall I stay with you and put up with you? Bring your son here.”

42 Even while the boy was coming, the demon threw him to the ground in a convulsion. But Jesus rebuked the impure spirit, healed the boy and gave him back to his father. 43 And they were all amazed at the greatness of God.

Jesus Predicts His Death a Second Time

While everyone was marveling at all that Jesus did, he said to his disciples, 44 “Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you: The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.”(CO) 45 But they did not understand what this meant. It was hidden from them, so that they did not grasp it,(CP) and they were afraid to ask him about it.

46 An argument started among the disciples as to which of them would be the greatest.(CQ) 47 Jesus, knowing their thoughts,(CR) took a little child and had him stand beside him. 48 Then he said to them, “Whoever welcomes this little child in my name welcomes me; and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me.(CS) For it is the one who is least among you all who is the greatest.”(CT)

49 “Master,”(CU) said John, “we saw someone driving out demons in your name and we tried to stop him, because he is not one of us.”

50 “Do not stop him,” Jesus said, “for whoever is not against you is for you.”(CV)

Samaritan Opposition

51 As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven,(CW) Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem.(CX) 52 And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a Samaritan(CY) village to get things ready for him; 53 but the people there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. 54 When the disciples James and John(CZ) saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to call fire down from heaven to destroy them[e]?”(DA) 55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them. 56 Then he and his disciples went to another village.

The Cost of Following Jesus(DB)

57 As they were walking along the road,(DC) a man said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.”

58 Jesus replied, “Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the Son of Man(DD) has no place to lay his head.”

59 He said to another man, “Follow me.”(DE)

But he replied, “Lord, first let me go and bury my father.”

60 Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God.”(DF)

61 Still another said, “I will follow you, Lord; but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family.”(DG)

62 Jesus replied, “No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God.”

Jesus Sends Out the Seventy-Two(DH)(DI)(DJ)

10 After this the Lord(DK) appointed seventy-two[f] others(DL) and sent them two by two(DM) ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go.(DN) 2 He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.(DO) 3 Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.(DP) 4 Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road.

5 “When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ 6 If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you. 7 Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages.(DQ) Do not move around from house to house.

8 “When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is offered to you.(DR) 9 Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God(DS) has come near to you.’ 10 But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your town we wipe from our feet as a warning to you.(DT) Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God has come near.’(DU) 12 I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom(DV) than for that town.(DW)

13 “Woe to you,(DX) Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth(DY) and ashes. 14 But it will be more bearable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you. 15 And you, Capernaum,(DZ) will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to Hades.[g]

16 “Whoever listens to you listens to me; whoever rejects you rejects me; but whoever rejects me rejects him who sent me.”(EA)

17 The seventy-two(EB) returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.”(EC)

18 He replied, “I saw Satan(ED) fall like lightning from heaven.(EE) 19 I have given you authority to trample on snakes(EF) and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. 20 However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”(EG)

21 At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.(EH) Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.

22 “All things have been committed to me by my Father.(EI) No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”(EJ)

23 Then he turned to his disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. 24 For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”(EK)

The Parable of the Good Samaritan(EL)

25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”(EM)

26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?”

27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’[h];(EN) and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[i]”(EO)

28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”(EP)

29 But he wanted to justify himself,(EQ) so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side.(ER) 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan,(ES) as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii[j] and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’

36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”

37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”

Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

At the Home of Martha and Mary

38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha(ET) opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary,(EU) who sat at the Lord’s feet(EV) listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care(EW) that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”

41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried(EX) and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one.[k](EY) Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
