Jesus Calls the First Disciples

On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by (A)the lake of Gennesaret, (B)and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were (C)washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And (D)he sat down and taught the people from the boat. And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, (E)“Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” And Simon answered, “Master, (F)we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” And when they had done this, (G)they enclosed a large number of fish, and (H)their nets were breaking. They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. (I)And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, (J)“Depart from me, for (K)I am a sinful man, O Lord.” For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, 10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.”[a] 11 And when they had brought their boats to land, (L)they left everything and followed him.

Jesus Cleanses a Leper

12 While he was in one of the cities, (M)there came a man full of leprosy.[b] And when he saw Jesus, he (N)fell on his face and begged him, “Lord, (O)if you will, you can make me clean.” 13 And Jesus[c] stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately the leprosy left him. 14 And he charged him (P)to tell no one, but “go and show (Q)yourself to the priest, and (R)make an offering for your cleansing, as Moses commanded, (S)for a proof to them.” 15 (T)But now even more the report about him went abroad, and great crowds gathered to hear him and to be healed of their infirmities. 16 But (U)he would withdraw to desolate places and (V)pray.

Jesus Heals a Paralytic

17 On one of those days, as he was teaching, Pharisees and (W)teachers of the law were sitting there, who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem. And (X)the power of the Lord was with him to heal.[d] 18 (Y)And behold, some men were bringing (Z)on a bed a man who was paralyzed, and they were seeking to bring him in and lay him before Jesus, 19 but finding no way to bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on (AA)the roof and let him down with his bed (AB)through the tiles into the midst before Jesus. 20 And (AC)when he saw their faith, he said, “Man, (AD)your sins are forgiven you.” 21 And the scribes and the Pharisees began to question, saying, “Who is this who speaks (AE)blasphemies? (AF)Who can forgive sins but God alone?” 22 When Jesus (AG)perceived their thoughts, he answered them, “Why do you question in your hearts? 23 Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? 24 But that you may know that (AH)the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the man who was paralyzed—“I say to you, rise, pick up your bed and go home.” 25 And immediately he rose up before them and picked up what he had been lying on and went home, (AI)glorifying God. 26 And amazement seized them all, and they (AJ)glorified God and were filled (AK)with awe, saying, “We have seen extraordinary things today.”

Jesus Calls Levi

27 (AL)After this he went out and saw (AM)a tax collector named (AN)Levi, sitting at the tax booth. And he said to him, “Follow me.” 28 And (AO)leaving everything, he rose and followed him.

29 And Levi made him a great feast in his house, and there was a large company (AP)of tax collectors and others reclining at table with them. 30 And the Pharisees and (AQ)their scribes grumbled at his disciples, saying, (AR)“Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” 31 And Jesus answered them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. 32 (AS)I have not come to call the righteous (AT)but sinners (AU)to repentance.”

A Question About Fasting

33 And they said to him, (AV)“The disciples of John (AW)fast often and (AX)offer prayers, (AY)and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink.” 34 And Jesus said to them, (AZ)“Can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? 35 (BA)The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and (BB)then they will fast in those days.” 36 He also told them a parable: “No one tears a piece from a new garment and puts it on an old garment. If he does, he will tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old. 37 And no one puts new wine into old (BC)wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. 38 But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. 39 And no one after drinking old wine desires new, for he says, ‘The old is good.’”[e]

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath

(BD)On a Sabbath,[f] while he was going through the grainfields, his disciples (BE)plucked and ate some heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands. But some of the Pharisees said, (BF)“Why are you doing (BG)what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?” And Jesus answered them, (BH)“Have you not read (BI)what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: how he entered the house of God and took and ate (BJ)the bread of the Presence, (BK)which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those with him?” And he said to them, (BL)“The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.”

A Man with a Withered Hand

On another Sabbath, (BM)he entered the synagogue (BN)and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was withered. And the scribes and the Pharisees (BO)watched him, to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, (BP)so that they might find a reason to accuse him. But (BQ)he knew their thoughts, and he said to the man with the withered hand, “Come and stand here.” And he rose and stood there. And Jesus said to them, “I ask you, (BR)is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?” 10 And (BS)after looking around at them all he said to him, “Stretch out your hand.” And (BT)he did so, and his hand was restored. 11 But they were filled with (BU)fury and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.

The Twelve Apostles

12 In these days (BV)he went out to the mountain to pray, and all night he continued in prayer to God. 13 And when day came, (BW)he called his disciples (BX)and (BY)chose from them twelve, whom he named (BZ)apostles: 14 Simon, (CA)whom he named Peter, and (CB)Andrew his brother, and (CC)James and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew, 15 and (CD)Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called (CE)the Zealot, 16 and (CF)Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

Jesus Ministers to a Great Multitude

17 And (CG)he came down with them and stood on a level place, with (CH)a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of (CI)Tyre and Sidon, 18 who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. (CJ)And those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. 19 And all the crowd (CK)sought to touch him, for (CL)power came out from him and healed them all.

The Beatitudes

20 And (CM)he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, (CN)and said:

“Blessed are you who are poor, for (CO)yours is the kingdom of God.

21 (CP)“Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied.

(CQ)“Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.

22 “Blessed are you when (CR)people hate you and when they (CS)exclude you and revile you and (CT)spurn your name as evil, (CU)on account of the Son of Man! 23 (CV)Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven; for (CW)so their fathers did to the prophets.

Jesus Pronounces Woes

24 (CX)“But woe to you who are rich, (CY)for you (CZ)have received your consolation.

25 “Woe to you who are full now, for (DA)you shall be hungry.

“Woe to (DB)you who laugh now, (DC)for you shall mourn and weep.

26 “Woe to you, (DD)when all people speak well of you, for (DE)so their fathers did to (DF)the false prophets.

Love Your Enemies

27 “But I say to you who hear, (DG)Love your enemies, (DH)do good to those who hate you, 28 (DI)bless those who curse you, (DJ)pray for those who abuse you. 29 (DK)To one who (DL)strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic[g] either. 30 (DM)Give to everyone who begs from you, and from one who takes away your goods do not demand them back. 31 And (DN)as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.

32 (DO)“If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 And (DP)if you (DQ)lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to get back the same amount. 35 But (DR)love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and (DS)you will be sons of (DT)the Most High, for (DU)he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. 36 (DV)Be merciful, even as (DW)your Father is merciful.

Judging Others

37 (DX)(DY)“Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; (DZ)forgive, and you will be forgiven; 38 (EA)give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put (EB)into your lap. For (EC)with the measure you use it will be measured back to you.”

39 He also told them a parable: (ED)“Can a blind man lead a blind man? Will they not both fall into a pit? 40 (EE)A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is (EF)fully trained will be like his teacher. 41 (EG)Why do you see the speck that is in your brother's eye, but (EH)do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take out the speck that is in your eye,’ when you yourself do not see the log that is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother's eye.

A Tree and Its Fruit

43 “For (EI)no good tree bears bad fruit, nor again does a bad tree bear good fruit, 44 for (EJ)each tree is known by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor are grapes picked from a bramble bush. 45 (EK)The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces (EL)evil, (EM)for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks.

Build Your House on the Rock

46 (EN)“Why (EO)do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? 47 (EP)Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: 48 he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.[h] 49 (EQ)But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and (ER)the ruin of that house was great.”

Jesus Calls His First Disciples(A)

One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret,[a] the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God.(B) He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.(C)

When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”(D)

Simon answered, “Master,(E) we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything.(F) But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”

When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.(G) So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.

When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!”(H) For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners.

Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid;(I) from now on you will fish for people.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.(J)

Jesus Heals a Man With Leprosy(K)

12 While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came along who was covered with leprosy.[b](L) When he saw Jesus, he fell with his face to the ground and begged him, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”

13 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” And immediately the leprosy left him.

14 Then Jesus ordered him, “Don’t tell anyone,(M) but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded(N) for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”

15 Yet the news about him spread all the more,(O) so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. 16 But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.(P)

Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man(Q)

17 One day Jesus was teaching, and Pharisees and teachers of the law(R) were sitting there. They had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was with Jesus to heal the sick.(S) 18 Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus. 19 When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.

20 When Jesus saw their faith, he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.”(T)

21 The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, “Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”(U)

22 Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? 23 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 24 But I want you to know that the Son of Man(V) has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” 25 Immediately he stood up in front of them, took what he had been lying on and went home praising God. 26 Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God.(W) They were filled with awe and said, “We have seen remarkable things today.”

Jesus Calls Levi and Eats With Sinners(X)

27 After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. “Follow me,”(Y) Jesus said to him, 28 and Levi got up, left everything and followed him.(Z)

29 Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors(AA) and others were eating with them. 30 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect(AB) complained to his disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”(AC)

31 Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”(AD)

Jesus Questioned About Fasting(AE)

33 They said to him, “John’s disciples(AF) often fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours go on eating and drinking.”

34 Jesus answered, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom(AG) fast while he is with them? 35 But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them;(AH) in those days they will fast.”

36 He told them this parable: “No one tears a piece out of a new garment to patch an old one. Otherwise, they will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old. 37 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. 38 No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins. 39 And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for they say, ‘The old is better.’”

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath(AI)

One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and his disciples began to pick some heads of grain, rub them in their hands and eat the kernels.(AJ) Some of the Pharisees asked, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”(AK)

Jesus answered them, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?(AL) He entered the house of God, and taking the consecrated bread, he ate what is lawful only for priests to eat.(AM) And he also gave some to his companions.” Then Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man(AN) is Lord of the Sabbath.”

On another Sabbath(AO) he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shriveled. The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely(AP) to see if he would heal on the Sabbath.(AQ) But Jesus knew what they were thinking(AR) and said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Get up and stand in front of everyone.” So he got up and stood there.

Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?”

10 He looked around at them all, and then said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so, and his hand was completely restored. 11 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law were furious(AS) and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.

The Twelve Apostles(AT)

12 One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God.(AU) 13 When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles:(AV) 14 Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, 15 Matthew,(AW) Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, 16 Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

Blessings and Woes(AX)

17 He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coastal region around Tyre and Sidon,(AY) 18 who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by impure spirits were cured, 19 and the people all tried to touch him,(AZ) because power was coming from him and healing them all.(BA)

20 Looking at his disciples, he said:

“Blessed are you who are poor,
    for yours is the kingdom of God.(BB)
21 Blessed are you who hunger now,
    for you will be satisfied.(BC)
Blessed are you who weep now,
    for you will laugh.(BD)
22 Blessed are you when people hate you,
    when they exclude you(BE) and insult you(BF)
    and reject your name as evil,
        because of the Son of Man.(BG)

23 “Rejoice in that day and leap for joy,(BH) because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets.(BI)

24 “But woe to you who are rich,(BJ)
    for you have already received your comfort.(BK)
25 Woe to you who are well fed now,
    for you will go hungry.(BL)
Woe to you who laugh now,
    for you will mourn and weep.(BM)
26 Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you,
    for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets.(BN)

Love for Enemies(BO)

27 “But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,(BP) 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.(BQ) 29 If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. 30 Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back.(BR) 31 Do to others as you would have them do to you.(BS)

32 “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you?(BT) Even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you?(BU) Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. 35 But love your enemies, do good to them,(BV) and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children(BW) of the Most High,(BX) because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. 36 Be merciful,(BY) just as your Father(BZ) is merciful.

Judging Others(CA)

37 “Do not judge, and you will not be judged.(CB) Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.(CC) 38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.(CD) For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”(CE)

39 He also told them this parable: “Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into a pit?(CF) 40 The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher.(CG)

41 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

A Tree and Its Fruit(CH)

43 “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. 44 Each tree is recognized by its own fruit.(CI) People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. 45 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.(CJ)

The Wise and Foolish Builders(CK)

46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’(CL) and do not do what I say?(CM) 47 As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice,(CN) I will show you what they are like. 48 They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”

Love and Serve the Lord

11 (A)“You shall therefore love the Lord your God and (B)keep his charge, his statutes, his rules, and his commandments always. And consider today (since I am not speaking to (C)your children who have not known or seen it), consider the discipline[a] of the Lord your God, (D)his greatness, (E)his mighty hand and his outstretched arm, (F)his signs and his deeds that he did in Egypt to Pharaoh the king of Egypt and to all his land, and what he did to the army of Egypt, to their horses and to their chariots, (G)how he made the water of the Red Sea flow over them as they pursued after you, and how the Lord has destroyed them to this day, and (H)what he did to you in the wilderness, until you came to this place, and (I)what he did to Dathan and Abiram the sons of Eliab, son of Reuben, how the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, with their households, their tents, and every living thing that followed them, in the midst of all Israel. For your eyes have seen (J)all the great work of the Lord that he did.

“You shall therefore keep the whole commandment that I command you today, that you may (K)be strong, and go in and take possession of the land that you are going over to possess, and (L)that you may live long in the land (M)that the Lord swore to your fathers to give to them and to their offspring, (N)a land flowing with milk and honey. 10 For the land that you are entering to take possession of it is not like the land of Egypt, from which you have come, where you sowed your seed and irrigated it,[b] like a garden of vegetables. 11 (O)But the land that you are going over to possess is a land of hills and valleys, which drinks water by the rain from heaven, 12 a land that the Lord your God cares for. (P)The eyes of the Lord your God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year.

13 “And if you will indeed obey my commandments that I command you today, (Q)to love the Lord your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul, 14 (R)he[c] will give the rain for your land in its season, (S)the early rain and the later rain, that you may gather in your grain and your wine and your oil. 15 (T)And he will give grass in your fields for your livestock, and (U)you shall eat and be full. 16 Take care (V)lest your heart be deceived, and you turn aside and (W)serve other gods and worship them; 17 then (X)the anger of the Lord will be kindled against you, and he (Y)will shut up the heavens, so that there will be no rain, and the land will yield no fruit, and (Z)you will perish quickly off the good land that the Lord is giving you.

18 (AA)“You shall therefore lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and (AB)you shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. 19 You shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 20 (AC)You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates, 21 (AD)that your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in the land that the Lord swore to your fathers to give them, (AE)as long as the heavens are above the earth. 22 For if (AF)you will be careful to do all this commandment that I command you to do, loving the Lord your God, walking in all his ways, and (AG)holding fast to him, 23 then the Lord (AH)will drive out all these nations before you, and you will (AI)dispossess nations greater and mightier than you. 24 (AJ)Every place on which the sole of your foot treads shall be yours. Your territory shall be (AK)from the wilderness to[d] the Lebanon and from the River, the river Euphrates, to the western sea. 25 (AL)No one shall be able to stand against you. The Lord your God will lay (AM)the fear of you and the dread of you on all the land that you shall tread, (AN)as he promised you.

26 (AO)“See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse: 27 (AP)the blessing, if you obey the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you today, 28 and (AQ)the curse, if you do not obey the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside from the way that I am commanding you today, (AR)to go after other gods that you have not known. 29 And when the Lord your God brings you into the land that you are entering to take possession of it, you shall set (AS)the blessing on Mount Gerizim and the curse on Mount Ebal. 30 Are they not beyond the Jordan, west of the road, toward the going down of the sun, in the land of the Canaanites who live in the (AT)Arabah, opposite Gilgal, beside (AU)the oak[e] of Moreh? 31 For you are (AV)to cross over the Jordan to go in to take possession of the land that the Lord your God is giving you. And when you possess it and live in it, 32 you shall be careful (AW)to do all the statutes and the rules that I am setting before you today.

Love and Obey the Lord

11 Love(A) the Lord your God and keep his requirements, his decrees, his laws and his commands always.(B) Remember today that your children(C) were not the ones who saw and experienced the discipline of the Lord your God:(D) his majesty,(E) his mighty hand, his outstretched arm;(F) the signs he performed and the things he did in the heart of Egypt, both to Pharaoh king of Egypt and to his whole country;(G) what he did to the Egyptian army, to its horses and chariots,(H) how he overwhelmed them with the waters of the Red Sea[a](I) as they were pursuing you, and how the Lord brought lasting ruin on them. It was not your children who saw what he did for you in the wilderness until you arrived at this place, and what he did(J) to Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab the Reubenite, when the earth opened(K) its mouth right in the middle of all Israel and swallowed them up with their households, their tents and every living thing that belonged to them. But it was your own eyes that saw all these great things the Lord has done.(L)

Observe therefore all the commands(M) I am giving you today, so that you may have the strength to go in and take over the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess,(N) and so that you may live long(O) in the land the Lord swore(P) to your ancestors to give to them and their descendants, a land flowing with milk and honey.(Q) 10 The land you are entering to take over is not like the land of Egypt,(R) from which you have come, where you planted your seed and irrigated it by foot as in a vegetable garden. 11 But the land you are crossing the Jordan to take possession of is a land of mountains and valleys(S) that drinks rain from heaven.(T) 12 It is a land the Lord your God cares for; the eyes(U) of the Lord your God are continually on it from the beginning of the year to its end.

13 So if you faithfully obey(V) the commands I am giving you today—to love(W) the Lord your God and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul(X) 14 then I will send rain(Y) on your land in its season, both autumn and spring rains,(Z) so that you may gather in your grain, new wine and olive oil. 15 I will provide grass(AA) in the fields for your cattle, and you will eat and be satisfied.(AB)

16 Be careful, or you will be enticed to turn away and worship other gods and bow down to them.(AC) 17 Then the Lord’s anger(AD) will burn against you, and he will shut up(AE) the heavens so that it will not rain and the ground will yield no produce,(AF) and you will soon perish(AG) from the good land the Lord is giving you. 18 Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.(AH) 19 Teach them to your children,(AI) talking about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.(AJ) 20 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates,(AK) 21 so that your days and the days of your children may be many(AL) in the land the Lord swore to give your ancestors, as many as the days that the heavens are above the earth.(AM)

22 If you carefully observe(AN) all these commands I am giving you to follow—to love(AO) the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to him and to hold fast(AP) to him— 23 then the Lord will drive out(AQ) all these nations(AR) before you, and you will dispossess nations larger and stronger than you.(AS) 24 Every place where you set your foot will be yours:(AT) Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the Euphrates River(AU) to the Mediterranean Sea. 25 No one will be able to stand against you. The Lord your God, as he promised you, will put the terror(AV) and fear of you on the whole land, wherever you go.(AW)

26 See, I am setting before you today a blessing(AX) and a curse(AY) 27 the blessing(AZ) if you obey the commands of the Lord your God that I am giving you today; 28 the curse if you disobey(BA) the commands of the Lord your God and turn from the way that I command you today by following other gods,(BB) which you have not known. 29 When the Lord your God has brought you into the land you are entering to possess, you are to proclaim on Mount Gerizim(BC) the blessings, and on Mount Ebal(BD) the curses.(BE) 30 As you know, these mountains are across the Jordan, westward, toward the setting sun, near the great trees of Moreh,(BF) in the territory of those Canaanites living in the Arabah in the vicinity of Gilgal.(BG) 31 You are about to cross the Jordan to enter and take possession(BH) of the land the Lord your God is giving(BI) you. When you have taken it over and are living there, 32 be sure that you obey all the decrees and laws I am setting before you today.

  1. Deuteronomy 11:4 Or the Sea of Reeds

My Help and My Deliverer

To the choirmaster. A Psalm of David.

40 I (A)waited patiently for the Lord;
    he inclined to me and (B)heard my cry.
He drew me up from (C)the pit of destruction,
    out of (D)the miry bog,
and (E)set my feet upon a rock,
    (F)making my steps secure.
He put (G)a new song in my mouth,
    a song of praise to our God.
Many will (H)see and fear,
    and put their trust in the Lord.

Blessed is the man who (I)makes
    the Lord his trust,
who does not turn to the proud,
    to those who (J)go astray after a lie!
You have multiplied, O Lord my God,
    your (K)wondrous deeds and your (L)thoughts toward us;
    none can compare with you!
I will proclaim and tell of them,
    yet they are (M)more than can be told.

(N)In sacrifice and offering you have not delighted,
    but you have given me an open (O)ear.[a]
Burnt offering and sin offering
    you have not required.
Then I said, “Behold, I have come;
    in the scroll of the book it is written (P)of me:
(Q)I delight to do your will, O my God;
    your law is (R)within my heart.”

I have told the glad news of deliverance[b]
    in (S)the great congregation;
behold, I have not (T)restrained my lips,
    (U)as you know, O Lord.
10 I have not hidden your deliverance within my heart;
    I have spoken of your faithfulness and your salvation;
I have not concealed your steadfast love and your faithfulness
    from the great congregation.

11 As for you, O Lord, you will not restrain
    your mercy from me;
your (V)steadfast love and your faithfulness will
    ever preserve me!
12 For evils have (W)encompassed me
    beyond number;
my (X)iniquities have overtaken me,
    and I cannot (Y)see;
they are (Z)more than the hairs of my head;
    my heart (AA)fails me.

13 (AB)Be pleased, O Lord, to (AC)deliver me!
    O Lord, (AD)make haste to help me!
14 (AE)Let those be put to shame and disappointed altogether
    who seek to snatch away my life;
let those be (AF)turned back and brought to dishonor
    who delight in my hurt!
15 Let those be appalled because of their shame
    who (AG)say to me, “Aha, Aha!”

16 But may all who seek you
    rejoice and be glad in you;
may those who love your salvation
    (AH)say continually, “Great is the Lord!”
17 As for me, I am (AI)poor and needy,
    but (AJ)the Lord takes thought for me.
You are my help and my deliverer;
    do not delay, O my God!

Many, Lord my God,

None can compare(Q) with you;

    they would be too many(R) to declare.

Sacrifice and offering you did not desire—(S)
    but my ears you have opened[c](T)
    burnt offerings(U) and sin offerings[d] you did not require.

    from the great assembly.(AD)

11 Do not withhold your mercy(AE) from me, Lord;

12 For troubles(AI) without number surround me;
    my sins have overtaken me, and I cannot see.(AJ)
They are more than the hairs of my head,(AK)

13 Be pleased to save me, Lord;
    come quickly, Lord, to help me.(AM)

14 May all who want to take my life(AN)
    be put to shame and confusion;(AO)
may all who desire my ruin(AP)
    be turned back in disgrace.
15 May those who say to me, “Aha! Aha!”(AQ)
    be appalled at their own shame.
16 But may all who seek you(AR)
    rejoice and be glad(AS) in you;
may those who long for your saving help always say,
    “The Lord is great!”(AT)

17 But as for me, I am poor and needy;(AU)
    may the Lord think(AV) of me.
You are my help(AW) and my deliverer;(AX)
    you are my God, do not delay.(AY)
