Jesus Is Questioned About Fasting(A)

33 Then they said to Him, (B)“Why[a] do the disciples of John fast often and make prayers, and likewise those of the Pharisees, but Yours eat and drink?”

34 And He said to them, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom fast while the (C)bridegroom is with them? 35 But the days will come when the bridegroom will be taken away from them; then they will fast in those days.”

36 (D)Then He spoke a parable to them: “No one [b]puts a piece from a new garment on an old one; otherwise the new makes a tear, and also the piece that was taken out of the new does not match the old. 37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; or else the new wine will burst the wineskins and be spilled, and the wineskins will be ruined. 38 But new wine must be put into new wineskins, [c]and both are preserved. 39 And no one, having drunk old wine, [d]immediately desires new; for he says, ‘The old is [e]better.’ ”

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath(E)

Now (F)it happened [f]on the second Sabbath after the first that He went through the grainfields. And His disciples plucked the heads of grain and ate them, rubbing them in their hands. And some of the Pharisees said to them, “Why are you doing (G)what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?”

But Jesus answering them said, “Have you not even read this, (H)what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: how he went into the house of God, took and ate the showbread, and also gave some to those with him, (I)which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat?” And He said to them, “The Son of Man is also Lord of the Sabbath.”

Healing on the Sabbath(J)

(K)Now it happened on another Sabbath, also, that He entered the synagogue and taught. And a man was there whose right hand was withered. So the scribes and Pharisees watched Him closely, whether He would (L)heal on the Sabbath, that they might find an (M)accusation against Him. But He (N)knew their thoughts, and said to the man who had the withered hand, “Arise and stand here.” And he arose and stood. Then Jesus said to them, “I will ask you one thing: (O)Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or [g]to destroy?” 10 And when He had looked around at them all, He said to [h]the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And he did so, and his hand was restored [i]as whole as the other. 11 But they were filled with rage, and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.

The Twelve Apostles(P)

12 Now it came to pass in those days that He went out to the mountain to pray, and continued all night in (Q)prayer to God. 13 And when it was day, He called His disciples to Himself; (R)and from them He chose (S)twelve whom He also named apostles: 14 Simon, (T)whom He also named Peter, and Andrew his brother; James and John; Philip and Bartholomew; 15 Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called the Zealot; 16 Judas (U)the son of James, and (V)Judas Iscariot who also became a traitor.

Jesus Heals a Great Multitude(W)

17 And He came down with them and stood on a level place with a crowd of His disciples (X)and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem, and from the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon, who came to hear Him and be healed of their diseases, 18 as well as those who were tormented with unclean spirits. And they were healed. 19 And the whole multitude (Y)sought to (Z)touch Him, for (AA)power went out from Him and healed them all.

Jesus Questioned About Fasting(A)

33 They said to him, “John’s disciples(B) often fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours go on eating and drinking.”

34 Jesus answered, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom(C) fast while he is with them? 35 But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them;(D) in those days they will fast.”

36 He told them this parable: “No one tears a piece out of a new garment to patch an old one. Otherwise, they will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old. 37 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. 38 No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins. 39 And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for they say, ‘The old is better.’”

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath(E)

One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and his disciples began to pick some heads of grain, rub them in their hands and eat the kernels.(F) Some of the Pharisees asked, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”(G)

Jesus answered them, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?(H) He entered the house of God, and taking the consecrated bread, he ate what is lawful only for priests to eat.(I) And he also gave some to his companions.” Then Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man(J) is Lord of the Sabbath.”

On another Sabbath(K) he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shriveled. The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely(L) to see if he would heal on the Sabbath.(M) But Jesus knew what they were thinking(N) and said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Get up and stand in front of everyone.” So he got up and stood there.

Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?”

10 He looked around at them all, and then said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so, and his hand was completely restored. 11 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law were furious(O) and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.

The Twelve Apostles(P)

12 One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God.(Q) 13 When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles:(R) 14 Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, 15 Matthew,(S) Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, 16 Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

Blessings and Woes(T)

17 He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coastal region around Tyre and Sidon,(U) 18 who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by impure spirits were cured, 19 and the people all tried to touch him,(V) because power was coming from him and healing them all.(W)
