The Temptation of Jesus

(Q)And Jesus, (R)full of the Holy Spirit, (S)returned from the Jordan and was led (T)by the Spirit in the wilderness for (U)forty days, (V)being tempted by the devil. (W)And he ate nothing during those days. And when they were ended, (X)he was hungry. The devil said to him, “If you are (Y)the Son of God, command (Z)this stone to become bread.” And Jesus answered him, (AA)“It is written, (AB)‘Man shall not live by bread alone.’” (AC)And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, and said to him, “To you (AD)I will give all this authority and their glory, (AE)for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will. If you, then, will worship me, it will all be yours.” And Jesus answered him, (AF)“It is written,

(AG)“‘You shall worship the Lord your God,
    and (AH)him only shall you serve.’”

(AI)And he took him to Jerusalem and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are (AJ)the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10 for it is written,

    to guard you,’

11 and

(AL)“‘On their hands they will bear you up,
    lest you strike your foot against a stone.’”

Jesus Is Tested in the Wilderness(Q)

Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit,(R) left the Jordan(S) and was led by the Spirit(T) into the wilderness, where for forty days(U) he was tempted[c] by the devil.(V) He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.

The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God,(W) tell this stone to become bread.”

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’[d](X)

The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.(Y) And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me,(Z) and I can give it to anyone I want to. If you worship me, it will all be yours.”

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’[e](AA)

The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. 10 For it is written:

“‘He will command his angels concerning you
    to guard you carefully;
11 they will lift you up in their hands,
    so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’[f](AB)

12 Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’[g](AC)

13 When the devil had finished all this tempting,(AD) he left him(AE) until an opportune time.

And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.

And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.

And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.

If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.

And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence:

10 For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee:

11 And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

12 And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

13 And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.
