11 And he answered them, (A)“Whoever has two tunics[a] is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.” 12 (B)Tax collectors also came to be baptized and said to him, “Teacher, (C)what shall we do?” 13 And he said to them, (D)“Collect no more than you are authorized to do.” 14 Soldiers also asked him, “And we, (E)what shall we do?” And he said to them, (F)“Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, and be content with your (G)wages.”

15 As the people were in expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, (H)whether he might be (I)the Christ, 16 (J)John answered them all, saying, “I baptize you with water, but (K)he who is mightier than I is coming, (L)the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you (M)with the Holy Spirit and (N)fire. 17 His (O)winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to (P)gather the wheat into his barn, (Q)but the chaff he will burn with (R)unquenchable fire.”

18 So (S)with many other exhortations he preached good news to the people. 19 But (T)Herod the tetrarch, who had been reproved by him for Herodias, his brother's wife, and for all the evil things that Herod had done, 20 added this to them all, that (U)he locked up John in prison.

21 Now when all the people were baptized, and when (V)Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, (W)the heavens were opened, 22 and (X)the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form, like a dove; and (Y)a voice came from heaven, (Z)“You are my beloved Son;[b] with you I am well pleased.”[c]

Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit,(AD) left the Jordan(AE) and was led by the Spirit(AF) into the wilderness, where for forty days(AG) he was tempted[e] by the devil.(AH) He ate nothing during those days, and at the end of them he was hungry.

The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God,(AI) tell this stone to become bread.”

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone.’[f](AJ)

The devil led him up to a high place and showed him in an instant all the kingdoms of the world.(AK) And he said to him, “I will give you all their authority and splendor; it has been given to me,(AL) and I can give it to anyone I want to. If you worship me, it will all be yours.”

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’[g](AM)

The devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. “If you are the Son of God,” he said, “throw yourself down from here. 10 For it is written:

“‘He will command his angels concerning you
    to guard you carefully;
11 they will lift you up in their hands,
    so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.’[h](AN)

12 Jesus answered, “It is said: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’[i](AO)

13 When the devil had finished all this tempting,(AP) he left him(AQ) until an opportune time.

Jesus Rejected at Nazareth

14 Jesus returned to Galilee(AR) in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through the whole countryside.(AS)
