The Plot to Kill Jesus(A)

22 Now (B)the Feast of Unleavened Bread drew near, which is called Passover. And (C)the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might kill Him, for they feared the people.

(D)Then Satan entered Judas, surnamed Iscariot, who was numbered among the (E)twelve. So he went his way and conferred with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray Him to them. And they were glad, and (F)agreed to give him money. So he promised and sought opportunity to (G)betray Him to them in the absence of the multitude.

Jesus and His Disciples Prepare the Passover

(H)Then came the Day of Unleavened Bread, when the Passover must be [a]killed. And He sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat.”

So they said to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare?”

10 And He said to them, “Behold, when you have entered the city, a man will meet you carrying a pitcher of water; follow him into the house which he enters. 11 Then you shall say to the master of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with My disciples?” ’ 12 Then he will show you a large, furnished upper room; there make ready.”

13 So they went and (I)found it just as He had said to them, and they prepared the Passover.

Jesus Institutes the Lord’s Supper

14 (J)When the hour had come, He sat down, and the [b]twelve apostles with Him. 15 Then He said to them, “With fervent desire I have desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16 for I say to you, I will no longer eat of it (K)until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”

17 Then He took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, “Take this and divide it among yourselves; 18 for (L)I say to you, [c]I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”

19 (M)And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My (N)body which is given for you; (O)do this in remembrance of Me.”

20 Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, (P)“This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you. 21 (Q)But behold, the hand of My betrayer is with Me on the table. 22 (R)And truly the Son of Man goes (S)as it has been determined, but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!”

23 (T)Then they began to question among themselves, which of them it was who would do this thing.

The Disciples Argue About Greatness

24 (U)Now there was also a dispute among them, as to which of them should be considered the greatest. 25 (V)And He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called ‘benefactors.’ 26 (W)But not so among you; on the contrary, (X)he who is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves. 27 (Y)For who is greater, he who sits at the table, or he who serves? Is it not he who sits at the table? Yet (Z)I am among you as the One who serves.

28 “But you are those who have continued with Me in (AA)My trials. 29 And (AB)I bestow upon you a kingdom, just as My Father bestowed one upon Me, 30 that (AC)you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, (AD)and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Denial(AE)

31 [d]And the Lord said, “Simon, Simon! Indeed, (AF)Satan has asked for you, that he may (AG)sift you as wheat. 32 But (AH)I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, (AI)strengthen your brethren.”

33 But he said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You, both to prison and to death.”

34 (AJ)Then He said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster shall not crow this day before you will deny three times that you know Me.”

Supplies for the Road

35 (AK)And He said to them, “When I sent you without money bag, knapsack, and sandals, did you lack anything?”

So they said, “Nothing.”

36 Then He said to them, “But now, he who has a money bag, let him take it, and likewise a knapsack; and he who has no sword, let him sell his garment and buy one. 37 For I say to you that this which is written must still be [e]accomplished in Me: (AL)‘And He was numbered with the transgressors.’ For the things concerning Me have an end.”

38 So they said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.”

And He said to them, “It is enough.”

The Prayer in the Garden(AM)

39 (AN)Coming out, (AO)He went to the Mount of Olives, as He was accustomed, and His disciples also followed Him. 40 (AP)When He came to the place, He said to them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.”

41 (AQ)And He was withdrawn from them about a stone’s throw, and He knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, “Father, if it is Your will, take this cup away from Me; nevertheless (AR)not My will, but Yours, be done.” 43 [f]Then (AS)an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. 44 (AT)And being in agony, He prayed more earnestly. Then His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

45 When He rose up from prayer, and had come to His disciples, He found them sleeping from sorrow. 46 Then He said to them, “Why (AU)do you sleep? Rise and (AV)pray, lest you enter into temptation.”

Betrayal and Arrest in Gethsemane(AW)

47 And while He was still speaking, (AX)behold, a multitude; and he who was called (AY)Judas, one of the twelve, went before them and drew near to Jesus to kiss Him. 48 But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a (AZ)kiss?”

49 When those around Him saw what was going to happen, they said to Him, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?” 50 And (BA)one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear.

51 But Jesus answered and said, “Permit even this.” And He touched his ear and healed him.

52 (BB)Then Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and the elders who had come to Him, “Have you come out, as against a (BC)robber, with swords and clubs? 53 When I was with you daily in the (BD)temple, you did not try to seize Me. But this is your (BE)hour, and the power of darkness.”

Peter Denies Jesus, and Weeps Bitterly(BF)

54 (BG)Having arrested Him, they led Him and brought Him into the high priest’s house. (BH)But Peter followed at a distance. 55 (BI)Now when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the courtyard and sat down together, Peter sat among them. 56 And a certain servant girl, seeing him as he sat by the fire, looked intently at him and said, “This man was also with Him.”

57 But he denied [g]Him, saying, “Woman, I do not know Him.”

58 (BJ)And after a little while another saw him and said, “You also are of them.”

But Peter said, “Man, I am not!”

59 (BK)Then after about an hour had passed, another confidently affirmed, saying, “Surely this fellow also was with Him, for he is a (BL)Galilean.”

60 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are saying!”

Immediately, while he was still speaking, [h]the rooster crowed. 61 And the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then (BM)Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, (BN)“Before the rooster [i]crows, you will deny Me three times.” 62 So Peter went out and wept bitterly.

Jesus Mocked and Beaten(BO)

63 (BP)Now the men who held Jesus mocked Him and (BQ)beat Him. 64 [j]And having blindfolded Him, they (BR)struck Him on the face and asked Him, saying, “Prophesy! Who is the one who struck You?” 65 And many other things they blasphemously spoke against Him.

Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin(BS)

66 (BT)As soon as it was day, (BU)the elders of the people, both chief priests and scribes, came together and led Him into their council, saying, 67 (BV)“If You are the Christ, tell us.”

But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will (BW)by no means believe. 68 And if I [k]also ask you, you will by no means answer [l]Me or let Me go. 69 (BX)Hereafter the Son of Man will sit on the right hand of the power of God.”

70 Then they all said, “Are You then the Son of God?”

So He said to them, (BY)“You rightly say that I am.”

71 (BZ)And they said, “What further testimony do we need? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth.”

22 And the feast of the unleavened food was coming nigh, that is called Passover,

and the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how they may take him up, for they were afraid of the people.

And the Adversary entered into Judas, who is surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve,

and he, having gone away, spake with the chief priests and the magistrates, how he might deliver him up to them,

and they rejoiced, and covenanted to give him money,

and he agreed, and was seeking a favourable season to deliver him up to them without tumult.

And the day of the unleavened food came, in which it was behoving the passover to be sacrificed,

and he sent Peter and John, saying, `Having gone on, prepare to us the passover, that we may eat;'

and they said to him, `Where wilt thou that we might prepare?'

10 And he said to them, `Lo, in your entering into the city, there shall meet you a man, bearing a pitcher of water, follow him to the house where he doth go in,

11 and ye shall say to the master of the house, The Teacher saith to thee, Where is the guest-chamber where the passover with my disciples I may eat?

12 and he shall show you a large upper room furnished, there make ready;'

13 and they, having gone away, found as he hath said to them, and they made ready the passover.

14 And when the hour come, he reclined (at meat), and the twelve apostles with him,

15 and he said unto them, `With desire I did desire to eat this passover with you before my suffering,

16 for I say to you, that no more may I eat of it till it may be fulfilled in the reign of God.'

17 And having taken a cup, having given thanks, he said, `Take this and divide to yourselves,

18 for I say to you that I may not drink of the produce of the vine till the reign of God may come.'

19 And having taken bread, having given thanks, he brake and gave to them, saying, `This is my body, that for you is being given, this do ye -- to remembrance of me.'

20 In like manner, also, the cup after the supping, saying, `This cup [is] the new covenant in my blood, that for you is being poured forth.

21 `But, lo, the hand of him delivering me up [is] with me on the table,

22 and indeed the Son of Man doth go according to what hath been determined; but wo to that man through whom he is being delivered up.'

23 And they began to reason among themselves, who then of them it may be, who is about to do this thing.

24 And there happened also a strife among them -- who of them is accounted to be greater.

25 And he said to them, `The kings of the nations do exercise lordship over them, and those exercising authority upon them are called benefactors;

26 but ye [are] not so, but he who is greater among you -- let him be as the younger; and he who is leading, as he who is ministering;

27 for who is greater? he who is reclining (at meat), or he who is ministering? is it not he who is reclining (at meat)? and I -- I am in your midst as he who is ministering.

28 `And ye -- ye are those who have remained with me in my temptations,

29 and I appoint to you, as my Father did appoint to me, a kingdom,

30 that ye may eat and may drink at my table, in my kingdom, and may sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.'

31 And the Lord said, `Simon, Simon, lo, the Adversary did ask you for himself to sift as the wheat,

32 and I besought for thee, that thy faith may not fail; and thou, when thou didst turn, strengthen thy brethren.'

33 And he said to him, `Sir, with thee I am ready both to prison and to death to go;'

34 and he said, `I say to thee, Peter, a cock shall not crow to-day, before thrice thou mayest disown knowing me.'

35 And he said to them, `When I sent you without bag, and scrip, and sandals, did ye lack anything?' and they said, `Nothing.'

36 Then said he to them, `But, now, he who is having a bag, let him take [it] up, and in like manner also a scrip; and he who is not having, let him sell his garment, and buy a sword,

37 for I say to you, that yet this that hath been written it behoveth to be fulfilled in me: And with lawless ones he was reckoned, for also the things concerning me have an end.'

38 And they said, `Sir, lo, here [are] two swords;' and he said to them, `It is sufficient.'

39 And having gone forth, he went on, according to custom, to the mount of the Olives, and his disciples also followed him,

40 and having come to the place, he said to them, `Pray ye not to enter into temptation.'

41 And he was withdrawn from them, as it were a stone's cast, and having fallen on the knees he was praying,

42 saying, `Father, if Thou be counselling to make this cup pass from me --; but, not my will, but Thine be done.' --

43 And there appeared to him a messenger from heaven strengthening him;

44 and having been in agony, he was more earnestly praying, and his sweat became, as it were, great drops of blood falling upon the ground.

45 And having risen up from the prayer, having come unto the disciples, he found them sleeping from the sorrow,

46 and he said to them, `Why do ye sleep? having risen, pray that ye may not enter into temptation.'

47 And while he is speaking, lo, a multitude, and he who is called Judas, one of the twelve, was coming before them, and he came nigh to Jesus to kiss him,

48 and Jesus said to him, `Judas, with a kiss the Son of Man dost thou deliver up?'

49 And those about him, having seen what was about to be, said to him, `Sir, shall we smite with a sword?'

50 And a certain one of them smote the servant of the chief priest, and took off his right ear,

51 and Jesus answering said, `Suffer ye thus far,' and having touched his ear, he healed him.

52 And Jesus said to those having come upon him -- chief priests, and magistrates of the temple, and elders -- `As upon a robber have ye come forth, with swords and sticks?

53 while daily I was with you in the temple, ye did stretch forth no hands against me; but this is your hour and the power of the darkness.'

54 And having taken him, they led and brought him to the house of the chief priest. And Peter was following afar off,

55 and they having kindled a fire in the midst of the court, and having sat down together, Peter was sitting in the midst of them,

56 and a certain maid having seen him sitting at the light, and having earnestly looked at him, she said, `And this one was with him!'

57 and he disowned him, saying, `Woman, I have not known him.'

58 And after a little, another having seen him, said, `And thou art of them!' and Peter said, `Man, I am not.'

59 And one hour, as it were, having intervened, a certain other was confidently affirming, saying, `Of a truth this one also was with him, for he is also a Galilean;'

60 and Peter said, `Man, I have not known what thou sayest;' and presently, while he is speaking, a cock crew.

61 And the Lord having turned did look on Peter, and Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he said to him -- `Before a cock shall crow, thou mayest disown me thrice;'

62 and Peter having gone without, wept bitterly.

63 And the men who were holding Jesus were mocking him, beating [him];

64 and having blindfolded him, they were striking him on the face, and were questioning him, saying, `Prophesy who he is who smote thee?'

65 and many other things, speaking evilly, they spake in regard to him.

66 And when it became day there was gathered together the eldership of the people, chief priests also, and scribes, and they led him up to their own sanhedrim,

67 saying, `If thou be the Christ, tell us.' And he said to them, `If I may tell you, ye will not believe;

68 and if I also question [you], ye will not answer me or send me away;

69 henceforth, there shall be the Son of Man sitting on the right hand of the power of God.'

70 And they all said, `Thou, then, art the Son of God?' and he said unto them, `Ye say [it], because I am;'

71 and they said, `What need yet have we of testimony? for we ourselves did hear [it] from his mouth.'

Preparing the Passover

22 (A)Now the Feast of Unleavened Bread, which is called the (B)Passover, was approaching. And the chief priests and the scribes (C)were trying to find [a]a way to put Him to death, since they were afraid of the people.

(D)And (E)Satan entered Judas, the one called Iscariot, [b]who belonged to the number of the twelve. And he left and discussed with the chief priests and (F)officers how he was to betray Him to them. And they were delighted, and agreed to give him money. And so he consented, and began looking for a good opportunity to betray Him to them [c]away from the crowd.

(G)Now the first day of Unleavened Bread came, on which (H)the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed. And so Jesus sent (I)Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover for us, so that we may eat it.” They said to Him, “Where do You want us to prepare it?” 10 And He said to them, “When you have entered the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you; follow him into the house that he enters. 11 And you shall say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher says to you, “Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?”’ 12 And he will show you a large, furnished upstairs room; prepare it there.” 13 And they left and found everything just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover.

The Lord’s Supper

14 (J)When the hour came, He reclined at the table, and (K)the apostles with Him. 15 And He said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16 for I say to you, I shall not eat it again (L)until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17 (M)And when He had taken a cup and (N)given thanks, He said, “Take this and share it among yourselves; 18 for (O)I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine from now on until the kingdom of God comes.” 19 And when He had taken some bread and (P)given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body, which is being given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 20 And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup, which is (Q)poured out for you, is the (R)new covenant in My blood. 21 (S)But behold, the hand of the one betraying Me is with [d]Mine on the table. 22 For indeed, the Son of Man is going (T)as it has been determined; but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!” 23 And they began to debate among themselves which one of them it was who was going to do this.

Who Is Greatest

24 And (U)a dispute also developed among them as to which one of them was regarded as being the greatest. 25 (V)And He said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles domineer over them; and those who have authority over them are called ‘Benefactors.’ 26 But it is not this way for you; (W)rather, the one who is the greatest among you must become like (X)the youngest, and the leader like the servant. 27 For (Y)who is greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But (Z)I am among you as the one who serves.

28 “You are the ones who have stood by Me in My (AA)trials; 29 and just as My Father has granted Me a (AB)kingdom, I grant you 30 that you may (AC)eat and drink at My table in My (AD)kingdom, and (AE)you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

31 “Simon, Simon, behold, (AF)Satan has [e]demanded to (AG)sift you men like wheat; 32 but I (AH)have prayed for [f]you, that [g]your faith will not fail; and [h]you, when you have [i]turned back, (AI)strengthen your brothers.” 33 (AJ)But he said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You both to prison and to death!” 34 But He said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow today until you have denied three times that you know Me.”

35 And He said to them, (AK)When I sent you out without money belt and bag and sandals, you did not lack anything, did you?” They said, “No, nothing.” 36 And He said to them, “But now, [j]whoever has a money belt is to take it along, likewise also a bag, and [k]whoever has no sword is to sell his [l]cloak and buy one. 37 For I tell you that this which is written must be fulfilled in Me: ‘(AL)And He was counted with wrongdoers’; for (AM)that which refers to Me has its [m]fulfillment.” 38 They said, “Lord, look, here are two (AN)swords.” And He said to them, “It is enough.”

The Garden of Gethsemane

39 (AO)And He came out and went, (AP)as was His habit, to (AQ)the Mount of Olives; and the disciples also followed Him. 40 (AR)Now when He arrived at the place, He said to them, (AS)Pray that you do not come into temptation.” 41 And He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and He (AT)knelt down and began to pray, 42 saying, “Father, if You are willing, remove this (AU)cup from Me; (AV)yet not My will, but Yours be done.” 43 [[n]Now an (AW)angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. 44 And (AX)being in agony, He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground]. 45 When He rose from prayer, He came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow, 46 and He said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and (AY)pray that you do not come into temptation.”

Jesus Betrayed by Judas

47 (AZ)While He was still speaking, behold, a crowd came, and the one called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading the way for them; and he approached Jesus to kiss Him. 48 But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” 49 When those who were around Him saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, shall we strike with the (BA)sword?” 50 And one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear. 51 But Jesus responded and said, [o]Stop! No more of this.” And He touched his ear and healed him. 52 And Jesus said to the chief priests and (BB)officers of the temple and elders who had come against Him, “Have you come out with swords and clubs (BC)as you would against a man inciting a revolt? 53 While I was with you daily in the temple, you did not lay hands on Me; but [p]this hour and the power of darkness are yours.”

Jesus’ Arrest

54 (BD)Now they arrested Him and led Him away, and brought Him to the house of the high priest; but (BE)Peter was following at a distance. 55 (BF)After they kindled a fire in the middle of (BG)the courtyard and sat down together, Peter was sitting among them. 56 And a slave woman, seeing him as he sat in the firelight, and staring at him, said, “This man was with Him as well.” 57 But he denied it, saying, “I do not know Him, woman!” 58 And a little later, (BH)another person saw him and said, “You are one of them too!” But Peter said, “Man, I am not!” 59 And after about an hour had passed, some other man began to insist, saying, “Certainly this man also was with Him, (BI)for he, too, is a Galilean.” 60 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about!” And immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. 61 And then (BJ)the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him, (BK)Before a rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.” 62 And he went out and wept bitterly.

63 (BL)The men who were holding [q]Jesus in custody began mocking Him and beating Him, 64 and they blindfolded Him and repeatedly asked Him, saying, “(BM)Prophesy, who is the one who hit You?” 65 And they were saying many other things against Him, (BN)blaspheming.

Jesus before the Sanhedrin

66 (BO)When it was day, (BP)the [r]Council of elders of the people assembled, both chief priests and scribes, and they led Him away to their (BQ)council chamber, saying, 67 (BR)If You are the [s]Christ, tell us.” But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe; 68 and if I ask a question, you will not answer. 69 (BS)But from now on (BT)the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.” 70 And they all said, “So You are (BU)the Son of God?” And He said to them, (BV)You say correctly that I am.” 71 And then they said, “What further need do we have of testimony? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth!”
