The Authority of Jesus Challenged

20 One(A) day[a] as He was teaching(B) the people in the temple complex and proclaiming the good news,(C) the chief priests and the scribes, with the elders,(D) came up and said to Him: “Tell us, by what authority are You doing these things? Who is it who gave You this authority?”

He answered them, “I will also ask you a question. Tell Me, was the baptism of John from heaven or from men?”

They discussed it among themselves: “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say, ‘Why didn’t you believe him?’ But if we say, ‘From men,’ all the people(E) will stone us, because they are convinced that John was a prophet.”(F)

So they answered that they did not know its origin.[b]

And Jesus said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.”

The Parable of the Vineyard Owner

Then(G) He began to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard,(H) leased it to tenant farmers, and went away for a long time. 10 At harvest time he sent a slave to the farmers so that they might give him some fruit from the vineyard. But the farmers beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 11 He sent yet another slave, but they beat that one too, treated him shamefully, and sent him away empty-handed. 12 And he sent yet a third, but they wounded this one too and threw him out.

13 “Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What should I do? I will send my beloved(I) son. Perhaps[c] they will respect him.’

14 “But when the tenant farmers saw him, they discussed it among themselves and said, ‘This is the heir. Let’s kill him, so the inheritance will be ours!’(J) 15 So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.

“Therefore, what will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and destroy(K) those farmers and give the vineyard to others.”

But when they heard this they said, “No—never!”(L)

17 But He looked at them and said, “Then what is the meaning of this Scripture:[d](M)

The stone that the builders rejected—
this has become the cornerstone?[e](N)[f]

18 Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, and if it falls on anyone, it will grind him to powder!”(O)

19 Then the scribes and the chief priests(P) looked for a way to get their hands on Him(Q) that very hour, because they knew He had told this parable against them, but they feared the people.(R)

God and Caesar

20 They[g](S) watched closely(T) and sent spies(U) who pretended to be righteous,[h] so they could catch Him in what He said,[i](V) to hand Him(W) over to the governor’s(X) rule and authority. 21 They questioned Him, “Teacher, we know that You speak and teach correctly,(Y) and You don’t show partiality,[j](Z) but teach truthfully the way of God.(AA) 22 Is it lawful(AB) for us to pay taxes(AC) to Caesar(AD) or not?”

23 But detecting their craftiness, He said to them,[k] 24 “Show Me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have?”

“Caesar’s,” they said.

25 “Well then,” He told them, “give back to Caesar(AE) the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that are God’s.”

26 They were not able to catch Him in what He said[l] in public,[m] and being amazed at His answer, they became silent.(AF)

The Sadducees and the Resurrection

27 Some(AG) of the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection,(AH) came up and questioned Him: 28 “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother has a wife, and dies childless, his brother should take the wife and produce offspring for his brother.(AI)[n] 29 Now there were seven brothers. The first took a wife and died without children. 30 Also the second[o] 31 and the third took her. In the same way, all seven died and left no children. 32 Finally, the woman died too. 33 In the resurrection, therefore, whose wife will the woman be? For all seven had married her.”[p]

34 Jesus told them, “The sons of this age(AJ) marry and are given in marriage.(AK) 35 But those who are counted worthy(AL) to take part in that age(AM) and in the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage. 36 For they cannot die anymore,(AN) because they are like angels and are sons of God,(AO) since they are sons of the resurrection. 37 Moses even indicated in the passage about the burning bush that the dead are raised, where he calls the Lord the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.(AP)[q] 38 He is not God of the dead but of the living, because all are living to[r] Him.”(AQ)

39 Some of the scribes answered, “Teacher, You have spoken well.” 40 And they no longer dared to ask Him anything.

The Question about the Messiah

41 Then(AR) He said to them, “How can they say that the Messiah is the Son of David?(AS) 42 For David himself says in the Book of Psalms:(AT)

The Lord declared to my Lord,
‘Sit at My right hand
43 until I make Your enemies Your footstool.’(AU)[s]

44 David calls Him ‘Lord’; how then can the Messiah be his Son?”(AV)

Warning against the Scribes

45 While(AW) all the people were listening, He said to His disciples, 46 “Beware(AX) of the scribes, who want to go around in long robes and who love greetings in the marketplaces, the front seats in the synagogues, and the places of honor at banquets.(AY) 47 They devour widows’ houses and say long prayers just for show. These will receive greater punishment.”[t]

The Widow’s Gift

21 He(AZ) looked up and saw the rich dropping their offerings into the temple treasury.(BA) He also saw a poor widow dropping in two tiny coins.[u](BB) “I tell you the truth,” He said. “This poor widow has put in more than all of them.(BC) For all these people have put in gifts out of their surplus, but she out of her poverty has put in all she had to live on.”

Destruction of the Temple Predicted

As(BD) some were talking about the temple complex, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and gifts dedicated to God,[v] He said, “These things that you see—the days will come(BE) when not one stone will be left on another that will not be thrown down!”(BF)

Signs of the End of the Age

“Teacher,” they asked Him, “so when will these things be? And what will be the sign when these things are about to take place?”(BG)

Then He said, “Watch out that you are not deceived.(BH) For many will come in My name,(BI) saying, ‘I am He,’(BJ) and, ‘The time is near.’ Don’t follow them.(BK) When you hear of wars and rebellions,[w] don’t be alarmed. Indeed, these things must take place first, but the end won’t come right away.”

10 Then He told them: “Nation will be raised up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.(BL) 11 There will be violent earthquakes,(BM) and famines and plagues(BN) in various places, and there will be terrifying sights and great signs from heaven.(BO) 12 But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you(BP) and persecute(BQ) you. They will hand you over to the synagogues(BR) and prisons,(BS) and you will be brought before kings and governors(BT) because of My name. 13 It will lead to an opportunity for you to witness.[x](BU) 14 Therefore make up your minds[y] not to prepare your defense ahead of time,(BV) 15 for I will give you such words[z](BW) and a wisdom(BX) that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict.(BY) 16 You will even be betrayed by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends.(BZ) They will kill some of you. 17 You will be hated by everyone because of My name,(CA) 18 but not a hair of your head will be lost.(CB) 19 By your endurance gain[aa] your lives.(CC)

The Destruction of Jerusalem

20 “When you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies,(CD) then recognize that its desolation(CE) has come near. 21 Then those in Judea must flee(CF) to the mountains!(CG) Those inside the city[ab] must leave it, and those who are in the country must not enter it, 22 because these are days of vengeance(CH) to fulfill all the things that are written. 23 Woe to pregnant women and nursing mothers in those days,(CI) for there will be great distress in the land[ac] and wrath against this people. 24 They will fall by the edge of the sword(CJ) and be led captive into all the nations, and Jerusalem will be trampled by the Gentiles[ad](CK) until the times of the Gentiles(CL) are fulfilled.

The Coming of the Son of Man

25 “Then there will be signs in the sun, moon, and stars;(CM) and there will be anguish on the earth among nations bewildered by the roaring sea and waves.(CN) 26 People will faint from fear and expectation of the things that are coming on the world, because the celestial powers will be shaken.(CO) 27 Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud(CP) with power and great glory.(CQ) 28 But when these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is near!”(CR)

The Parable of the Fig Tree

29 Then He told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. 30 As soon as they put out leaves you can see for yourselves and recognize that summer is already near. 31 In the same way, when you see these things happening, recognize[ae] that the kingdom of God is near. 32 I assure you: This generation will certainly not pass away until all things take place.(CS) 33 Heaven and earth will pass away,(CT) but My words will never pass away.(CU)

The Need for Watchfulness

34 “Be on your guard,(CV) so that your minds are not dulled[af] from carousing,[ag] drunkenness,(CW) and worries of life,(CX) or that day will come on you unexpectedly(CY) 35 like a trap. For it will come on all who live on the face of the whole earth. 36 But be alert at all times,(CZ) praying that you may have strength[ah] to escape(DA) all these things that are going to take place and to stand before the Son of Man.”

37 During(DB) the day, He was teaching in the temple complex,(DC) but in the evening He would go out and spend the night on what is called the Mount of Olives.(DD) 38 Then all the people would come early in the morning to hear Him in the temple complex.(DE)

The Plot to Kill Jesus

22 The(DF) Festival of Unleavened Bread,(DG) which is called Passover,(DH) was drawing near. The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to put Him to death,(DI) because they were afraid of the people.(DJ)

Then(DK) Satan entered Judas,(DL) called Iscariot,(DM) who was numbered among the Twelve. He went away and discussed with the chief priests and temple police(DN) how he could hand Him over(DO) to them. They were glad and agreed to give him silver.[ai] So he accepted the offer and started looking for a good opportunity to betray Him to them when the crowd was not present.

Preparation for Passover

Then(DP) the Day of Unleavened Bread came when the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.(DQ) Jesus sent Peter and John,(DR) saying, “Go and prepare the Passover meal for us, so we can eat it.”

“Where do You want us to prepare it?” they asked Him.

10 “Listen,” He said to them, “when you’ve entered the city, a man carrying a water jug will meet you. Follow him into the house he enters. 11 Tell the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks you, “Where is the guest room where I can eat the Passover with My disciples?”’ 12 Then he will show you a large, furnished room upstairs.(DS) Make the preparations there.”

13 So they went and found it just as He had told them,(DT) and they prepared the Passover.

The First Lord’s Supper

14 When(DU) the hour came, He reclined at the table, and the apostles with Him. 15 Then He said to them, “I have fervently desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again[aj] until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”(DV) 17 Then He took a cup,(DW) and after giving thanks,(DX) He said, “Take this and share it among yourselves. 18 For I tell you, from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”

19 And He took bread, gave thanks, broke it, gave it to them, and said, “This is My body,(DY) which is given for you. Do this in remembrance(DZ) of Me.”

20 In the same way He also took the cup after supper and said, “This cup is the new covenant(EA) established by My blood;(EB) it is shed for you.[ak] 21 But(EC) look, the hand of the one betraying Me is at the table with Me!(ED) 22 For the Son of Man will go away as it has been determined,(EE) but woe to that man by whom He is betrayed!”

23 So they began to argue(EF) among themselves which of them it could be who was going to do this thing.

The Dispute over Greatness

24 Then a dispute also arose among them about who should be considered the greatest.(EG) 25 But He said to them,(EH) “The kings of the Gentiles dominate them, and those who have authority over them are called[al] ‘Benefactors.’[am] 26 But it must not be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever is greatest among you must become like the youngest,(EI) and whoever leads, like the one serving. 27 For who is greater, the one at the table or the one serving? Isn’t it the one at the table? But I am among you as the One who serves.(EJ) 28 You are the ones who stood by Me in My trials.(EK) 29 I bestow on you a kingdom,(EL) just as My Father bestowed one on Me, 30 so that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom.(EM) And you will sit on thrones judging the 12 tribes of Israel.(EN)

Peter’s Denial Predicted

31 “Simon, Simon,[an] look out! Satan(EO) has asked to sift you[ao] like wheat.(EP) 32 But I have prayed(EQ) for you[ap] that your faith may not fail. And you, when you have turned back, strengthen(ER) your brothers.”

33 “Lord,”(ES) he told Him, “I’m ready to go with You both to prison and to death!”

34 “I tell you, Peter,” He said, “the rooster will not crow today until[aq] you deny three times that you know Me!”

Be Ready for Trouble

35 He also said to them, “When I sent you out(ET) without money-bag, traveling bag, or sandals, did you lack anything?”

“Not a thing,” they said.

36 Then He said to them, “But now, whoever has a money-bag should take it, and also a traveling bag. And whoever doesn’t have a sword should sell his robe and buy one. 37 For I tell you, what is written must be fulfilled in Me: And He was counted among the outlaws.(EU)[ar] Yes, what is written about Me is coming to its fulfillment.”(EV)

38 “Lord,” they said, “look, here are two swords.”

“Enough of that!”[as] He told them.

The Prayer in the Garden

39 He went out and made His way(EW) as usual(EX) to the Mount of Olives,(EY) and the disciples followed Him. 40 When He reached the place,(EZ) He told them, “Pray that you may not enter into temptation.”(FA) 41 Then He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, knelt down, and began to pray,(FB) 42 “Father, if You are willing, take this cup(FC) away from Me—nevertheless, not My will, but Yours, be done.”

[43 Then an angel from heaven(FD) appeared to Him, strengthening Him. 44 Being in anguish,(FE) He prayed more fervently, and His sweat became like drops of blood falling to the ground.][at] 45 When He got up from prayer and came to the disciples, He found them sleeping, exhausted from their grief.[au] 46 “Why are you sleeping?” He asked them. “Get up and pray, so that you won’t enter into temptation.”

The Judas Kiss

47 While(FF) He was still speaking, suddenly a mob was there, and one of the Twelve named Judas was leading them. He came near Jesus to kiss Him, 48 but Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”

49 When those around Him saw what was going to happen, they asked, “Lord, should we strike with the sword?” 50 Then one of them struck the high priest’s slave and cut off his right ear.

51 But Jesus responded, “No more of this!”[av] And touching his ear, He healed him. 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, temple police, and the elders who had come for Him, “Have you come out with swords and clubs as if I were a criminal?[aw] 53 Every day while I was with you in the temple complex,(FG) you never laid a hand on Me. But this is your hour(FH)—and the dominion of darkness.”(FI)

Peter Denies His Lord

54 They seized Him, led Him away, and brought Him into the high priest’s house. Meanwhile Peter(FJ) was following at a distance. 55 They(FK) lit a fire in the middle of the courtyard(FL) and sat down together, and Peter sat among them. 56 When a servant saw him sitting in the firelight, and looked closely at him, she said, “This man was with Him too.”

57 But he denied it: “Woman, I don’t know Him!”

58 After a little while, someone else saw him and said, “You’re one of them too!”

“Man, I am not!” Peter said.

59 About an hour later, another kept insisting, “This man was certainly with Him, since he’s also a Galilean.”

60 But Peter said, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. 61 Then the Lord turned and looked at Peter.(FM) So Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had said to him, “Before the rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.”(FN) 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly.

Jesus Mocked and Beaten

63 The men who were holding Jesus started mocking and beating Him.(FO) 64 After blindfolding Him, they kept[ax] asking, “Prophesy! Who hit You?” 65 And they were saying many other blasphemous(FP) things against Him.

Jesus Faces the Sanhedrin

66 When daylight came,(FQ) the elders[ay] of the people, both the chief priests and the scribes,(FR) convened and brought Him before their Sanhedrin.(FS) 67 They said,(FT) “If You are the Messiah, tell us.”

But He said to them, “If I do tell you, you will not believe. 68 And if I ask you, you will not answer. 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the Power of God.”(FU)

70 They all asked, “Are You, then, the Son of God?”(FV)

And He said to them, “You say that I am.”(FW)

71 “Why do we need any more testimony,” they said, “since we’ve heard it ourselves from His mouth?”

Jesus Faces Pilate

23 Then(FX) their whole assembly rose up and brought Him before Pilate. They began to accuse Him, saying, “We found this man subverting our nation, opposing payment of taxes(FY) to Caesar, and saying that He Himself is the Messiah, a King.”

So Pilate asked Him,(FZ) “Are You the King of the Jews?”(GA)

He answered him, “You have said it.”[az]

Pilate then told the chief priests and the crowds, “I find no grounds(GB) for charging this man.”

But they kept insisting, “He stirs up the people,(GC) teaching throughout all Judea, from Galilee(GD) where He started even to here.”

Jesus Faces Herod Antipas

When Pilate(GE) heard this,[ba] he asked if the man was a Galilean. Finding that He was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent Him to Herod,(GF) who was also in Jerusalem during those days. Herod was very glad to see Jesus; for a long time he had wanted to see Him because he had heard about Him and was hoping to see some miracle[bb] performed by Him. So he kept asking Him questions, but Jesus did not answer him.(GG) 10 The chief priests and the scribes stood by, vehemently accusing Him. 11 Then Herod, with his soldiers, treated Him with contempt, mocked(GH) Him, dressed Him in a brilliant robe,(GI) and sent Him back to Pilate. 12 That very day Herod and Pilate became friends.[bc](GJ) Previously, they had been hostile toward each other.

Jesus or Barabbas

13 Pilate called together the chief priests, the leaders, and the people,(GK) 14 and said to them, “You have brought me this man as one who subverts the people.(GL) But in fact, after examining Him in your presence, I have found no grounds(GM) to charge this man with those things you accuse Him of. 15 Neither has Herod, because he sent Him back to us. Clearly, He has done nothing to deserve death. 16 Therefore, I will have Him whipped[bd](GN) and then release Him.” [17 For according to the festival he had to release someone to them.][be](GO)

18 Then(GP) they all cried out together, “Take this man away!(GQ) Release Barabbas to us!” 19 (He had been thrown into prison for a rebellion that had taken place in the city, and for murder.)

20 Pilate, wanting to release Jesus,(GR) addressed them again, 21 but they kept shouting, “Crucify! Crucify Him!”

22 A third time he said to them, “Why? What has this man done wrong?(GS) I have found in Him no grounds(GT) for the death penalty. Therefore, I will have Him whipped and then release Him.”

23 But they kept up the pressure, demanding with loud voices that He be crucified. And their voices[bf] won out. 24 So(GU) Pilate decided to grant their demand(GV) 25 and released the one they were asking for, who had been thrown into prison for rebellion and murder. But he handed Jesus over to their will.(GW)

The Way to the Cross

26 As(GX) they led Him away, they seized Simon, a Cyrenian,(GY) who was coming in from the country, and laid the cross(GZ) on him to carry behind Jesus. 27 A large crowd of people followed Him, including women who were mourning and lamenting Him.(HA) 28 But turning to them, Jesus said, “Daughters of Jerusalem,(HB) do not weep for Me, but weep for yourselves and your children. 29 Look, the days are coming(HC) when they will say, ‘The women without children, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed, are fortunate!’(HD) 30 Then they will begin to say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us!’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us!’(HE)[bg] 31 For if they do these things when the wood is green, what will happen when it is dry?”(HF)

Crucified between Two Criminals

32 Two others—criminals(HG)—were also led away to be executed with Him. 33 When(HH) they arrived at the place called The Skull, they crucified Him there, along with the criminals, one on the right and one on the left. [34 Then Jesus said, “Father,(HI) forgive(HJ) them, because they do not know what they are doing.”(HK)][bh] And they divided His clothes and cast lots.(HL)

35 The(HM) people stood watching, and even the leaders kept scoffing:(HN) “He saved others; let Him save Himself if this is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One!”(HO) 36 The soldiers also mocked Him. They came offering Him sour wine(HP) 37 and said, “If You are the King of the Jews,(HQ) save Yourself!”

38 An inscription was above Him:[bi]

THIS IS

THE KING OF THE JEWS.

39 Then(HR) one of the criminals hanging there began to yell insults at[bj] Him: “Aren’t You the Messiah? Save Yourself and us!”

40 But the other answered, rebuking him: “Don’t you even fear God,(HS) since you are undergoing the same punishment? 41 We are punished justly, because we’re getting back what we deserve for the things we did, but this man has done nothing wrong.”(HT) 42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me[bk](HU) when You come into Your kingdom!”(HV)

43 And He said to him, “I assure you: Today you will be with Me in paradise.”(HW)

The Death of Jesus

44 It(HX) was now about noon,[bl] and darkness came over the whole land[bm] until three,[bn] 45 because the sun’s light failed.[bo] The curtain(HY) of the sanctuary was split down the middle. 46 And Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into Your hands I entrust My spirit.(HZ)[bp] Saying this, He breathed His last.

47 When the centurion saw what happened, he began to glorify(IA) God, saying, “This man really was righteous!” 48 All the crowds that had gathered for this spectacle, when they saw what had taken place, went home, striking their chests.[bq](IB) 49 But(IC) all who knew Him, including the women who had followed Him from Galilee, stood at a distance,(ID) watching these things.

The Burial of Jesus

50 There(IE) was a good and righteous man named Joseph, a member of the Sanhedrin, 51 who had not agreed with their plan(IF) and action. He was from Arimathea, a Judean town, and was looking forward to the kingdom of God.(IG) 52 He approached Pilate and asked for Jesus’ body. 53 Taking it down, he wrapped it in fine linen and placed it in a tomb cut into the rock, where no one had ever been placed.[br](IH) 54 It was preparation day, and the Sabbath was about to begin.[bs] 55 The women(II) who had come with Him from Galilee followed along and observed the tomb and how His body was placed. 56 Then they returned and prepared spices and perfumes.(IJ) And they rested on the Sabbath according to the commandment.(IK)

Resurrection Morning

24 On(IL) the first day of the week,(IM) very early in the morning, they[bt] came to the tomb, bringing the spices they had prepared. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb. They went in but did not find the body(IN) of the Lord Jesus.(IO) While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men stood by them in dazzling(IP) clothes. So the women were terrified and bowed down to the ground.[bu]

“Why are you looking for the living among the dead?” asked the men. “He is not here, but He has been resurrected!(IQ) Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee,(IR) saying, ‘The Son of Man must be betrayed(IS) into the hands of sinful men, be crucified, and rise(IT) on the third day’?” And they remembered His words.

Returning from the tomb, they reported all these things to the Eleven(IU) and to all the rest. 10 Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James,(IV) and the other women with them were telling the apostles(IW) these things. 11 But these words seemed like nonsense to them, and they did not believe(IX) the women. 12 Peter,(IY) however, got up and ran to the tomb. When he stooped to look in, he saw only the linen cloths.[bv](IZ) So he went home, amazed(JA) at what had happened.

The Emmaus Disciples

13 Now(JB) that same day two of them were on their way to a village called[bw] Emmaus, which was about seven miles[bx](JC) from Jerusalem.(JD) 14 Together they were discussing everything that had taken place. 15 And while they were discussing and arguing, Jesus Himself came near and began to walk along with them. 16 But they[by] were prevented from recognizing Him.(JE) 17 Then He asked them, “What is this dispute that you’re having[bz] with each other as you are walking?” And they stopped walking and looked discouraged.

18 The one named Cleopas answered Him, “Are You the only visitor in Jerusalem who doesn’t know the things that happened there in these days?”(JF)

19 “What things?” He asked them.

So they said to Him, “The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene,(JG) who was a Prophet(JH) powerful in action and speech(JI) before God and all the people,(JJ) 20 and how our chief priests and leaders(JK) handed Him over to be sentenced to death,(JL) and they crucified Him.(JM) 21 But we were hoping that He was the One who was about to redeem(JN) Israel. Besides all this, it’s the third day(JO) since these things happened. 22 Moreover, some women from our group astounded us. They arrived early at the tomb, 23 and when they didn’t find His body, they came and reported that they had seen a vision of angels who said He was alive. 24 Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they didn’t see Him.”(JP)

25 He said to them, “How unwise and slow you are to believe in your hearts all that the prophets have spoken!(JQ) 26 Didn’t the Messiah have to suffer(JR) these things and enter into His glory?”(JS) 27 Then beginning with Moses(JT) and all the Prophets,(JU) He interpreted for them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.(JV)

28 They came near the village where they were going, and He gave the impression that He was going farther.(JW) 29 But they urged Him: “Stay with us, because it’s almost evening, and now the day is almost over.” So He went in to stay with them.

30 It was as He reclined at the table with them that He took the bread, blessed and broke(JX) it, and gave it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened,(JY) and they recognized Him, but He disappeared from their sight.(JZ) 32 So they said to each other, “Weren’t our hearts ablaze within us while He was talking with us on the road and explaining the Scriptures(KA) to us?” 33 That very hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem. They found the Eleven(KB) and those with them gathered together, 34 who said,[ca] “The Lord has certainly been raised, and has appeared to Simon!”(KC) 35 Then they began to describe what had happened on the road and how He was made known to them in the breaking of the bread.(KD)

The Reality of the Risen Jesus

36 And(KE) as they were saying these things, He Himself stood among them. He said to them, “Peace(KF) to you!” 37 But they were startled and terrified(KG) and thought they were seeing a ghost.(KH) 38 “Why are you troubled?”(KI) He asked them. “And why do doubts arise in your hearts? 39 Look at My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself!(KJ) Touch Me and see,(KK) because a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you can see I have.” 40 Having said this, He showed them His hands and feet. 41 But while they still were amazed and unbelieving because of their joy, He asked them, “Do you have anything here to eat?” 42 So they gave Him a piece of a broiled fish,[cb] 43 and He took it and ate in their presence.

44 Then He told them, “These are My words(KL) that I spoke to you while I was still with you—that everything written about Me in the Law of Moses, the Prophets,(KM) and the Psalms(KN) must be fulfilled.” 45 Then He opened their minds(KO) to understand(KP) the Scriptures. 46 He also said to them, “This is what is written:[cc] The Messiah would suffer and rise from the dead the third day,(KQ) 47 and repentance for[cd] forgiveness of sins(KR) would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations,(KS) beginning at Jerusalem.(KT) 48 You are witnesses(KU) of these things. 49 And look, I am sending you[ce] what My Father promised.(KV) As for you, stay in the city[cf] until you are empowered[cg](KW) from on high.”

The Ascension of Jesus

50 Then He led them out as far as Bethany,(KX) and lifting up His hands(KY) He blessed them. 51 And while He was blessing them, He left them and was carried up into heaven.(KZ) 52 After worshiping Him,(LA) they returned to Jerusalem with great joy.(LB) 53 And they were continually in the temple complex praising God.[ch](LC)

The Authority of Jesus Questioned(A)

20 One day as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple courts(B) and proclaiming the good news,(C) the chief priests and the teachers of the law, together with the elders, came up to him. “Tell us by what authority you are doing these things,” they said. “Who gave you this authority?”(D)

He replied, “I will also ask you a question. Tell me: John’s baptism(E)—was it from heaven, or of human origin?”

They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Why didn’t you believe him?’ But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ all the people(F) will stone us, because they are persuaded that John was a prophet.”(G)

So they answered, “We don’t know where it was from.”

Jesus said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”

The Parable of the Tenants(H)

He went on to tell the people this parable: “A man planted a vineyard,(I) rented it to some farmers and went away for a long time.(J) 10 At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants so they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 11 He sent another servant, but that one also they beat and treated shamefully and sent away empty-handed. 12 He sent still a third, and they wounded him and threw him out.

13 “Then the owner of the vineyard said, ‘What shall I do? I will send my son, whom I love;(K) perhaps they will respect him.’

14 “But when the tenants saw him, they talked the matter over. ‘This is the heir,’ they said. ‘Let’s kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ 15 So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him.

“What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? 16 He will come and kill those tenants(L) and give the vineyard to others.”

When the people heard this, they said, “God forbid!”

17 Jesus looked directly at them and asked, “Then what is the meaning of that which is written:

“‘The stone the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone’[a]?(M)

18 Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; anyone on whom it falls will be crushed.”(N)

19 The teachers of the law and the chief priests looked for a way to arrest him(O) immediately, because they knew he had spoken this parable against them. But they were afraid of the people.(P)

Paying Taxes to Caesar(Q)

20 Keeping a close watch on him, they sent spies, who pretended to be sincere. They hoped to catch Jesus in something he said,(R) so that they might hand him over to the power and authority of the governor.(S) 21 So the spies questioned him: “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach what is right, and that you do not show partiality but teach the way of God in accordance with the truth.(T) 22 Is it right for us to pay taxes to Caesar or not?”

23 He saw through their duplicity and said to them, 24 “Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription are on it?”

“Caesar’s,” they replied.

25 He said to them, “Then give back to Caesar what is Caesar’s,(U) and to God what is God’s.”

26 They were unable to trap him in what he had said there in public. And astonished by his answer, they became silent.

The Resurrection and Marriage(V)

27 Some of the Sadducees,(W) who say there is no resurrection,(X) came to Jesus with a question. 28 “Teacher,” they said, “Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife but no children, the man must marry the widow and raise up offspring for his brother.(Y) 29 Now there were seven brothers. The first one married a woman and died childless. 30 The second 31 and then the third married her, and in the same way the seven died, leaving no children. 32 Finally, the woman died too. 33 Now then, at the resurrection whose wife will she be, since the seven were married to her?”

34 Jesus replied, “The people of this age marry and are given in marriage. 35 But those who are considered worthy of taking part in the age to come(Z) and in the resurrection from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage, 36 and they can no longer die; for they are like the angels. They are God’s children,(AA) since they are children of the resurrection. 37 But in the account of the burning bush, even Moses showed that the dead rise, for he calls the Lord ‘the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’[b](AB) 38 He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.”

39 Some of the teachers of the law responded, “Well said, teacher!” 40 And no one dared to ask him any more questions.(AC)

Whose Son Is the Messiah?(AD)

41 Then Jesus said to them, “Why is it said that the Messiah is the son of David?(AE) 42 David himself declares in the Book of Psalms:

“‘The Lord said to my Lord:
    “Sit at my right hand
43 until I make your enemies
    a footstool for your feet.”’[c](AF)

44 David calls him ‘Lord.’ How then can he be his son?”

Warning Against the Teachers of the Law

45 While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples, 46 “Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at banquets.(AG) 47 They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished most severely.”

The Widow’s Offering(AH)

21 As Jesus looked up, he saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury.(AI) He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. “Truly I tell you,” he said, “this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave their gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on.”(AJ)

The Destruction of the Temple and Signs of the End Times(AK)(AL)

Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said, “As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another;(AM) every one of them will be thrown down.”

“Teacher,” they asked, “when will these things happen? And what will be the sign that they are about to take place?”

He replied: “Watch out that you are not deceived. For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am he,’ and, ‘The time is near.’ Do not follow them.(AN) When you hear of wars and uprisings, do not be frightened. These things must happen first, but the end will not come right away.”

10 Then he said to them: “Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.(AO) 11 There will be great earthquakes, famines and pestilences in various places, and fearful events and great signs from heaven.(AP)

12 “But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you. They will hand you over to synagogues and put you in prison, and you will be brought before kings and governors, and all on account of my name. 13 And so you will bear testimony to me.(AQ) 14 But make up your mind not to worry beforehand how you will defend yourselves.(AR) 15 For I will give you(AS) words and wisdom that none of your adversaries will be able to resist or contradict. 16 You will be betrayed even by parents, brothers and sisters, relatives and friends,(AT) and they will put some of you to death. 17 Everyone will hate you because of me.(AU) 18 But not a hair of your head will perish.(AV) 19 Stand firm, and you will win life.(AW)

20 “When you see Jerusalem being surrounded by armies,(AX) you will know that its desolation is near. 21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains, let those in the city get out, and let those in the country not enter the city.(AY) 22 For this is the time of punishment(AZ) in fulfillment(BA) of all that has been written. 23 How dreadful it will be in those days for pregnant women and nursing mothers! There will be great distress in the land and wrath against this people. 24 They will fall by the sword and will be taken as prisoners to all the nations. Jerusalem will be trampled(BB) on by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.

25 “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea.(BC) 26 People will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken.(BD) 27 At that time they will see the Son of Man(BE) coming in a cloud(BF) with power and great glory. 28 When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”(BG)

29 He told them this parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees. 30 When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near. 31 Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God(BH) is near.

32 “Truly I tell you, this generation(BI) will certainly not pass away until all these things have happened. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.(BJ)

34 “Be careful, or your hearts will be weighed down with carousing, drunkenness and the anxieties of life,(BK) and that day will close on you suddenly(BL) like a trap. 35 For it will come on all those who live on the face of the whole earth. 36 Be always on the watch, and pray(BM) that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man.”

37 Each day Jesus was teaching at the temple,(BN) and each evening he went out(BO) to spend the night on the hill called the Mount of Olives,(BP) 38 and all the people came early in the morning to hear him at the temple.(BQ)

Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus(BR)

22 Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching,(BS) and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus,(BT) for they were afraid of the people. Then Satan(BU) entered Judas, called Iscariot,(BV) one of the Twelve. And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard(BW) and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. They were delighted and agreed to give him money.(BX) He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present.

The Last Supper(BY)(BZ)(CA)(CB)(CC)

Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.(CD) Jesus sent Peter and John,(CE) saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.”

“Where do you want us to prepare for it?” they asked.

10 He replied, “As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, 11 and say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 12 He will show you a large room upstairs, all furnished. Make preparations there.”

13 They left and found things just as Jesus had told them.(CF) So they prepared the Passover.

14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles(CG) reclined at the table.(CH) 15 And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.(CI) 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.”(CJ)

17 After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. 18 For I tell you I will not drink again from the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.”

19 And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it,(CK) and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”

20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant(CL) in my blood, which is poured out for you.[d] 21 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table.(CM) 22 The Son of Man(CN) will go as it has been decreed.(CO) But woe to that man who betrays him!” 23 They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this.

24 A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest.(CP) 25 Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. 26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest,(CQ) and the one who rules like the one who serves.(CR) 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.(CS) 28 You are those who have stood by me in my trials. 29 And I confer on you a kingdom,(CT) just as my Father conferred one on me, 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom(CU) and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.(CV)

31 “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked(CW) to sift all of you as wheat.(CX) 32 But I have prayed for you,(CY) Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”(CZ)

33 But he replied, “Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death.”(DA)

34 Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.”

35 Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals,(DB) did you lack anything?”

“Nothing,” they answered.

36 He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. 37 It is written: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors’[e];(DC) and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.”

38 The disciples said, “See, Lord, here are two swords.”

“That’s enough!” he replied.

Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives(DD)

39 Jesus went out as usual(DE) to the Mount of Olives,(DF) and his disciples followed him. 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.”(DG) 41 He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down(DH) and prayed, 42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup(DI) from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”(DJ) 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.(DK) 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.[f]

45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. 46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”(DL)

Jesus Arrested(DM)

47 While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, 48 but Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”

49 When Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?”(DN) 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.

51 But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.

52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard,(DO) and the elders, who had come for him, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts,(DP) and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour(DQ)—when darkness reigns.”(DR)

Peter Disowns Jesus(DS)

54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest.(DT) Peter followed at a distance.(DU) 55 And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, “This man was with him.”

57 But he denied it. “Woman, I don’t know him,” he said.

58 A little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.”

“Man, I am not!” Peter replied.

59 About an hour later another asserted, “Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.”(DV)

60 Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 The Lord(DW) turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.”(DX) 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly.

The Guards Mock Jesus(DY)

63 The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. 64 They blindfolded him and demanded, “Prophesy! Who hit you?” 65 And they said many other insulting things to him.(DZ)

Jesus Before Pilate and Herod(EA)(EB)(EC)

66 At daybreak the council(ED) of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together,(EE) and Jesus was led before them. 67 “If you are the Messiah,” they said, “tell us.”

Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe me, 68 and if I asked you, you would not answer.(EF) 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.”(EG)

70 They all asked, “Are you then the Son of God?”(EH)

He replied, “You say that I am.”(EI)

71 Then they said, “Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips.”

23 Then the whole assembly rose and led him off to Pilate.(EJ) And they began to accuse him, saying, “We have found this man subverting our nation.(EK) He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar(EL) and claims to be Messiah, a king.”(EM)

So Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?”

“You have said so,” Jesus replied.

Then Pilate announced to the chief priests and the crowd, “I find no basis for a charge against this man.”(EN)

But they insisted, “He stirs up the people all over Judea by his teaching. He started in Galilee(EO) and has come all the way here.”

On hearing this, Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean.(EP) When he learned that Jesus was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod,(EQ) who was also in Jerusalem at that time.

When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased, because for a long time he had been wanting to see him.(ER) From what he had heard about him, he hoped to see him perform a sign of some sort. He plied him with many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer.(ES) 10 The chief priests and the teachers of the law were standing there, vehemently accusing him. 11 Then Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked him. Dressing him in an elegant robe,(ET) they sent him back to Pilate. 12 That day Herod and Pilate became friends(EU)—before this they had been enemies.

13 Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people, 14 and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him.(EV) 15 Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us; as you can see, he has done nothing to deserve death. 16 Therefore, I will punish him(EW) and then release him.” [17] [g]

18 But the whole crowd shouted, “Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us!”(EX) 19 (Barabbas had been thrown into prison for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.)

20 Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate appealed to them again. 21 But they kept shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”

22 For the third time he spoke to them: “Why? What crime has this man committed? I have found in him no grounds for the death penalty. Therefore I will have him punished and then release him.”(EY)

23 But with loud shouts they insistently demanded that he be crucified, and their shouts prevailed. 24 So Pilate decided to grant their demand. 25 He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, the one they asked for, and surrendered Jesus to their will.

The Crucifixion of Jesus(EZ)

26 As the soldiers led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene,(FA) who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus.(FB) 27 A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed(FC) for him. 28 Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children.(FD) 29 For the time will come when you will say, ‘Blessed are the childless women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’(FE) 30 Then

“‘they will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!”
and to the hills, “Cover us!”’[h](FF)

31 For if people do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”(FG)

32 Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed.(FH) 33 When they came to the place called the Skull, they crucified him there, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. 34 Jesus said, “Father,(FI) forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”[i](FJ) And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.(FK)

35 The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him.(FL) They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is God’s Messiah, the Chosen One.”(FM)

36 The soldiers also came up and mocked him.(FN) They offered him wine vinegar(FO) 37 and said, “If you are the king of the Jews,(FP) save yourself.”

38 There was a written notice above him, which read: this is the king of the jews.(FQ)

39 One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Messiah? Save yourself and us!”(FR)

40 But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? 41 We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”(FS)

42 Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.[j](FT)

43 Jesus answered him, “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”(FU)

The Death of Jesus(FV)

44 It was now about noon, and darkness came over the whole land until three in the afternoon,(FW) 45 for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple(FX) was torn in two.(FY) 46 Jesus called out with a loud voice,(FZ) “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”[k](GA) When he had said this, he breathed his last.(GB)

47 The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God(GC) and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.” 48 When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts(GD) and went away. 49 But all those who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee,(GE) stood at a distance,(GF) watching these things.

The Burial of Jesus(GG)

50 Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and upright man, 51 who had not consented to their decision and action. He came from the Judean town of Arimathea, and he himself was waiting for the kingdom of God.(GH) 52 Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body. 53 Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen cloth and placed it in a tomb cut in the rock, one in which no one had yet been laid. 54 It was Preparation Day,(GI) and the Sabbath was about to begin.

55 The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee(GJ) followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how his body was laid in it. 56 Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes.(GK) But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment.(GL)

Jesus Has Risen(GM)

24 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning, the women took the spices they had prepared(GN) and went to the tomb. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they entered, they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.(GO) While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning(GP) stood beside them. In their fright the women bowed down with their faces to the ground, but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still with you in Galilee:(GQ) ‘The Son of Man(GR) must be delivered over to the hands of sinners, be crucified and on the third day be raised again.’(GS) Then they remembered his words.(GT)

When they came back from the tomb, they told all these things to the Eleven and to all the others. 10 It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the others with them(GU) who told this to the apostles.(GV) 11 But they did not believe(GW) the women, because their words seemed to them like nonsense. 12 Peter, however, got up and ran to the tomb. Bending over, he saw the strips of linen lying by themselves,(GX) and he went away,(GY) wondering to himself what had happened.

On the Road to Emmaus

13 Now that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles[l] from Jerusalem.(GZ) 14 They were talking with each other about everything that had happened. 15 As they talked and discussed these things with each other, Jesus himself came up and walked along with them;(HA) 16 but they were kept from recognizing him.(HB)

17 He asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk along?”

They stood still, their faces downcast. 18 One of them, named Cleopas,(HC) asked him, “Are you the only one visiting Jerusalem who does not know the things that have happened there in these days?”

19 “What things?” he asked.

“About Jesus of Nazareth,”(HD) they replied. “He was a prophet,(HE) powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. 20 The chief priests and our rulers(HF) handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; 21 but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel.(HG) And what is more, it is the third day(HH) since all this took place. 22 In addition, some of our women amazed us.(HI) They went to the tomb early this morning 23 but didn’t find his body. They came and told us that they had seen a vision of angels, who said he was alive. 24 Then some of our companions went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus.”(HJ)

25 He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Did not the Messiah have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?”(HK) 27 And beginning with Moses(HL) and all the Prophets,(HM) he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.(HN)

28 As they approached the village to which they were going, Jesus continued on as if he were going farther. 29 But they urged him strongly, “Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over.” So he went in to stay with them.

30 When he was at the table with them, he took bread, gave thanks, broke it(HO) and began to give it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized him,(HP) and he disappeared from their sight. 32 They asked each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us(HQ) while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures(HR) to us?”

33 They got up and returned at once to Jerusalem. There they found the Eleven and those with them, assembled together 34 and saying, “It is true! The Lord(HS) has risen and has appeared to Simon.”(HT) 35 Then the two told what had happened on the way, and how Jesus was recognized by them when he broke the bread.(HU)

Jesus Appears to the Disciples

36 While they were still talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.”(HV)

37 They were startled and frightened, thinking they saw a ghost.(HW) 38 He said to them, “Why are you troubled, and why do doubts rise in your minds?
