Jesus Sends Out the Seventy-Two
10 After this the Lord appointed (A)seventy-two[a] others and (B)sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to go. 2 (C)And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. (D)Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. 3 Go your way; (E)behold, I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. 4 (F)Carry no moneybag, no knapsack, no sandals, and (G)greet no one on the road. 5 Whatever house you enter, first say, (H)‘Peace be to this house!’ 6 And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him. But if not, (I)it will return to you. 7 And remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they provide, for (J)the laborer deserves his wages. Do not go from house to house. 8 Whenever you enter a town and they receive you, eat what is set before you. 9 Heal the sick in it and say to them, (K)‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ 10 But whenever you enter a town and they do not receive you, go into its streets and say, 11 (L)‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet we wipe off against you. Nevertheless know this, that (M)the kingdom of God has come near.’ 12 I tell you, (N)it will be more bearable on (O)that day for Sodom than for that town.
Woe to Unrepentant Cities
13 (P)“Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works done in you had been done in (Q)Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago, sitting in sackcloth and ashes. 14 (R)But it will be more bearable in the judgment for (S)Tyre and Sidon than for you. 15 And you, Capernaum, (T)will you be exalted to heaven? You shall be brought down to (U)Hades.
16 (V)“The one who hears you hears me, and (W)the one who rejects you rejects me, and (X)the one who rejects me rejects him who sent me.”
The Return of the Seventy-Two
17 (Y)The seventy-two returned with joy, saying, “Lord, (Z)even the demons are subject to us in your name!” 18 And he said to them, (AA)“I saw Satan (AB)fall like lightning from heaven. 19 Behold, I have given you authority (AC)to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of (AD)the enemy, and (AE)nothing shall hurt you. 20 (AF)Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that (AG)your names are written in heaven.”
Jesus Rejoices in the Father's Will
21 (AH)In that same hour (AI)he rejoiced (AJ)in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, (AK)Lord of heaven and earth, that (AL)you have hidden these things from the wise and understanding and (AM)revealed them to little children; yes, Father, for (AN)such was your gracious will.[b] 22 (AO)All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows who the Son is (AP)except the Father, or who the Father is (AQ)except the Son and anyone (AR)to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”
23 Then turning to the disciples he said privately, (AS)“Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! 24 For I tell you (AT)that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it.”
The Parable of the Good Samaritan
25 (AU)And behold, a (AV)lawyer stood up to (AW)put him to the test, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to (AX)inherit eternal life?” 26 He said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?” 27 And he answered, (AY)“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and (AZ)your neighbor as yourself.” 28 And he said to him, “You have answered correctly; (BA)do this, and you will live.”
29 But he, (BB)desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 Jesus replied, “A man (BC)was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a (BD)priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side. 32 So likewise (BE)a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a (BF)Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion. 34 He went to him and (BG)bound up his wounds, pouring on (BH)oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 And the next day he took out two (BI)denarii[c] and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’ 36 Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?” 37 He said, “The one who showed him mercy.” And Jesus said to him, “You go, and do likewise.”
Martha and Mary
38 Now as they went on their way, Jesus[d] entered a village. And a woman named (BJ)Martha (BK)welcomed him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called (BL)Mary, who (BM)sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” 41 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are (BN)anxious and troubled about many things, 42 but one thing is necessary.[e] Mary has chosen (BO)the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”
The Lord's Prayer
11 Now Jesus[f] was praying in a certain place, and when he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray, (BP)as John taught his disciples.” 2 And he said to them, (BQ)“When you pray, say:
(BR)“Father, (BS)hallowed be (BT)your name.
(BU)Your kingdom come.
3 (BV)Give us (BW)each day our daily bread,[g]
4 and (BX)forgive us our sins,
for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
And (BY)lead us not into temptation.”
5 And he said to them, “Which of you who has a friend will go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves, 6 for a friend of mine has arrived on a journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; 7 and he will answer from within, ‘Do not bother me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed. I cannot get up and give you anything’? 8 I tell you, though he will not get up and give him anything (BZ)because he is his friend, yet because of his impudence[h] he will rise and give him whatever he needs. 9 And I tell you, (CA)ask, and (CB)it will be given to you; (CC)seek, and you will find; (CD)knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 11 What father among you, if his son asks for[i] a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; 12 or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, (CE)who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father (CF)give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
Jesus and Beelzebul
14 (CG)Now he was casting out a demon that was mute. When the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke, and the people marveled. 15 But some of them said, “He casts out demons (CH)by Beelzebul, the prince of demons,” 16 while others, (CI)to test him, kept seeking from him a sign from heaven. 17 (CJ)But he, (CK)knowing their thoughts, said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and a divided household falls. 18 And if Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by Beelzebul. 19 And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, (CL)by whom do (CM)your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. 20 But if it is by (CN)the finger of God that I cast out demons, then (CO)the kingdom of God has come upon you. 21 When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are safe; 22 (CP)but when one stronger than he attacks him and (CQ)overcomes him, he takes away his (CR)armor in which he trusted and (CS)divides his spoil. 23 (CT)Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.
Return of an Unclean Spirit
24 (CU)“When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through (CV)waterless places seeking rest, and finding none it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ 25 And when it comes, it finds the house swept and put in order. 26 Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there. And (CW)the last state of that person is worse than the first.”
True Blessedness
27 As he said these things, (CX)a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, (CY)“Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts at which you nursed!” 28 But he said, (CZ)“Blessed rather are those (DA)who hear the word of God and (DB)keep it!”
The Sign of Jonah
29 (DC)When the crowds were increasing, he began to say, (DD)“This generation is an evil generation. (DE)It seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. 30 For as (DF)Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be to this generation. 31 (DG)The queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with the men of this generation and (DH)condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and behold, (DI)something greater than Solomon is here. 32 (DJ)The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and (DK)condemn it, for (DL)they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, (DM)something greater than Jonah is here.
The Light in You
33 (DN)“No one after lighting a lamp puts it in a cellar or under a basket, but on a stand, so that those who enter may see the light. 34 Your eye is (DO)the lamp of your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light, but when it is (DP)bad, your body is full of darkness. 35 (DQ)Therefore be careful lest the light in you be darkness. 36 If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, it will be wholly bright, (DR)as when a lamp with its rays gives you light.”
Woes to the Pharisees and Lawyers
37 While Jesus[j] was speaking, (DS)a Pharisee asked him to dine with him, so he went in and reclined at table. 38 The Pharisee was astonished to see (DT)that he did not first wash before dinner. 39 And the Lord said to him, (DU)“Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of (DV)greed and wickedness. 40 (DW)You fools! (DX)Did not he who made the outside make the inside also? 41 But (DY)give as alms those things that are within, and behold, (DZ)everything is clean for you.
42 (EA)“But woe to you Pharisees! For (EB)you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect (EC)justice and (ED)the love of God. (EE)These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. 43 Woe to you Pharisees! For (EF)you love the best seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. 44 Woe to you! (EG)For you are like unmarked graves, and people walk over them without knowing it.”
45 One of (EH)the lawyers answered him, “Teacher, in saying these things you insult us also.” 46 And he said, “Woe to you (EI)lawyers also! For (EJ)you load people with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers. 47 (EK)Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets whom your fathers killed. 48 (EL)So you are witnesses and you (EM)consent to the deeds of (EN)your fathers, for they killed them, and you build their tombs. 49 Therefore also (EO)the Wisdom of God said, (EP)‘I will send them (EQ)prophets and apostles, (ER)some of whom they will (ES)kill and persecute,’ 50 so that (ET)the blood of all the prophets, shed (EU)from the foundation of the world, may be (EV)charged against this generation, 51 from the blood of (EW)Abel to the blood of (EX)Zechariah, who perished between (EY)the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, it will be (EZ)required of this generation. 52 Woe to you (FA)lawyers! (FB)For you have taken away the key of (FC)knowledge. You (FD)did not enter yourselves, and you hindered those who were entering.”
53 As he went away from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard and to provoke him to speak about many things, 54 (FE)lying in wait for him, (FF)to catch him in something he might say.

10 After this the Lord(D) appointed seventy-two[a] others(E) and sent them two by two(F) ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go.(G) 2 He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.(H) 3 Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.(I) 4 Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road.
5 “When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’ 6 If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you. 7 Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages.(J) Do not move around from house to house.
8 “When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is offered to you.(K) 9 Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God(L) has come near to you.’ 10 But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its streets and say, 11 ‘Even the dust of your town we wipe from our feet as a warning to you.(M) Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God has come near.’(N) 12 I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom(O) than for that town.(P)

16 “Whoever listens to you listens to me; whoever rejects you rejects me; but whoever rejects me rejects him who sent me.”(T)
17 The seventy-two(U) returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.”(V)
18 He replied, “I saw Satan(W) fall like lightning from heaven.(X) 19 I have given you authority to trample on snakes(Y) and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. 20 However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”(Z)
21 At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children.(AA) Yes, Father, for this is what you were pleased to do.
22 “All things have been committed to me by my Father.(AB) No one knows who the Son is except the Father, and no one knows who the Father is except the Son and those to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.”(AC)
23 Then he turned to his disciples and said privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see. 24 For I tell you that many prophets and kings wanted to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.”(AD)

25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”(AF)
26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?”
27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’[c];(AG) and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[d]”(AH)

They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side.(AK) 32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan,(AL) as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii[e] and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’
36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”
37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”
Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”
At the Home of Martha and Mary
38 As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha(AM) opened her home to him. 39 She had a sister called Mary,(AN) who sat at the Lord’s feet(AO) listening to what he said. 40 But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, “Lord, don’t you care(AP) that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!”
41 “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried(AQ) and upset about many things, 42 but few things are needed—or indeed only one.[f](AR) Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Jesus’ Teaching on Prayer(AS)(AT)
11 One day Jesus was praying(AU) in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord,(AV) teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”
2 He said to them, “When you pray, say:
“‘Father,[g]
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom(AW) come.[h]
3 Give us each day our daily bread.
4 Forgive us our sins,
for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.[i](AX)

5 Then Jesus said to them, “Suppose you have a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; 6 a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have no food to offer him.’ 7 And suppose the one inside answers, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.’ 8 I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity[k] he will surely get up and give you as much as you need.(AZ)
9 “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you;(BA) seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.
11 “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for[l] a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
Jesus and Beelzebul(BB)(BC)
14 Jesus was driving out a demon that was mute. When the demon left, the man who had been mute spoke, and the crowd was amazed.(BD) 15 But some of them said, “By Beelzebul,(BE) the prince of demons, he is driving out demons.”(BF) 16 Others tested him by asking for a sign from heaven.(BG)
17 Jesus knew their thoughts(BH) and said to them: “Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall. 18 If Satan(BI) is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? I say this because you claim that I drive out demons by Beelzebul. 19 Now if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your followers drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. 20 But if I drive out demons by the finger of God,(BJ) then the kingdom of God(BK) has come upon you.
21 “When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are safe. 22 But when someone stronger attacks and overpowers him, he takes away the armor in which the man trusted and divides up his plunder.
23 “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.(BL)
24 “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ 25 When it arrives, it finds the house swept clean and put in order. 26 Then it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first.”(BM)
27 As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, “Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you.”(BN)
28 He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God(BO) and obey it.”(BP)
The Sign of Jonah(BQ)
29 As the crowds increased, Jesus said, “This is a wicked generation. It asks for a sign,(BR) but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.(BS) 30 For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation. 31 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the people of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom;(BT) and now something greater than Solomon is here. 32 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah;(BU) and now something greater than Jonah is here.
The Lamp of the Body(BV)
33 “No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light.(BW) 34 Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy,[m] your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy,[n] your body also is full of darkness. 35 See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. 36 Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you.”
Woes on the Pharisees and the Experts in the Law
37 When Jesus had finished speaking, a Pharisee invited him to eat with him; so he went in and reclined at the table.(BX) 38 But the Pharisee was surprised when he noticed that Jesus did not first wash before the meal.(BY)
39 Then the Lord(BZ) said to him, “Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.(CA) 40 You foolish people!(CB) Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also? 41 But now as for what is inside you—be generous to the poor,(CC) and everything will be clean for you.(CD)
42 “Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth(CE) of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God.(CF) You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone.(CG)
43 “Woe to you Pharisees, because you love the most important seats in the synagogues and respectful greetings in the marketplaces.(CH)
44 “Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves,(CI) which people walk over without knowing it.”
45 One of the experts in the law(CJ) answered him, “Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also.”
46 Jesus replied, “And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them.(CK)
47 “Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your ancestors who killed them. 48 So you testify that you approve of what your ancestors did; they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs.(CL) 49 Because of this, God in his wisdom(CM) said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.’(CN) 50 Therefore this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world, 51 from the blood of Abel(CO) to the blood of Zechariah,(CP) who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all.(CQ)
52 “Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.”(CR)
53 When Jesus went outside, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to oppose him fiercely and to besiege him with questions, 54 waiting to catch him in something he might say.(CS)

9 After these things had been done, the officials approached me and said, “The people of Israel and the priests and the (A)Levites have not separated themselves from the peoples of the lands (B)with their abominations, from the (C)Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites. 2 (D)For they have taken some of their daughters to be wives for themselves and for their sons, so that the (E)holy race[a] has (F)mixed itself with the peoples of the lands. And in this faithlessness the hand of the officials and chief men has been foremost.” 3 As soon as I heard this, I (G)tore my garment and my cloak and pulled hair from my head and beard and (H)sat appalled. 4 Then all who (I)trembled at the words of the God of Israel, because of the faithlessness of the returned exiles, gathered around me while I sat (J)appalled until the evening sacrifice. 5 And at the (K)evening sacrifice I rose from my fasting, with my garment (L)and my cloak torn, and fell upon my knees (M)and spread out my hands to the Lord my God, 6 saying:
“O my God, I am ashamed and blush to lift my face to you, my God, for our iniquities (N)have risen higher than our heads, and our (O)guilt has (P)mounted up to the heavens. 7 (Q)From the days of our fathers to this day we have been in great (R)guilt. And for our iniquities we, our kings, and our priests have been given into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, to plundering, (S)and to utter shame, as it is today. 8 But now for a brief moment favor has been shown by the Lord our God, to leave us a (T)remnant and to give us a (U)secure hold[b] within his holy place, that our God may (V)brighten our eyes and grant us a little reviving in our slavery. 9 (W)For we are slaves. Yet our God has not forsaken us in our slavery, (X)but has extended to us his steadfast love before the kings of Persia, to grant us some reviving to set up the house of our God, to repair its ruins, and to give us protection[c] in Judea and Jerusalem.
10 “And now, O our God, what shall we say after this? For we have forsaken your commandments, 11 which you commanded by your servants the prophets, saying, ‘The land that you are entering, to take possession of it, is a land impure with the impurity of the peoples of the lands, with their abominations that have filled it from end to end with (Y)their uncleanness. 12 (Z)Therefore do not give your daughters to their sons, neither take their daughters for your sons, and never seek their peace or prosperity, that you may be strong and eat the good of the land (AA)and leave it for an inheritance to your children forever.’ 13 And after all that has come upon us for our evil deeds and for (AB)our great guilt, seeing that you, our (AC)God, have punished us less than our iniquities deserved and have given us such a (AD)remnant as this, 14 shall we break your commandments again and (AE)intermarry with the peoples who practice these abominations? 9 After these things had been done, the leaders came to me and said, “The people of Israel, including the priests and the Levites, have not kept themselves separate(A) from the neighboring peoples with their detestable practices, like those of the Canaanites, Hittites, Perizzites, Jebusites,(B) Ammonites,(C) Moabites,(D) Egyptians and Amorites.(E) 2 They have taken some of their daughters(F) as wives for themselves and their sons, and have mingled(G) the holy race(H) with the peoples around them. And the leaders and officials have led the way in this unfaithfulness.”(I)
3 When I heard this, I tore(J) my tunic and cloak, pulled hair from my head and beard and sat down appalled.(K) 4 Then everyone who trembled(L) at the words of the God of Israel gathered around me because of this unfaithfulness of the exiles. And I sat there appalled(M) until the evening sacrifice.
5 Then, at the evening sacrifice,(N) I rose from my self-abasement, with my tunic and cloak torn, and fell on my knees with my hands(O) spread out to the Lord my God 6 and prayed:
“I am too ashamed(P) and disgraced, my God, to lift up my face to you, because our sins are higher than our heads and our guilt has reached to the heavens.(Q) 7 From the days of our ancestors(R) until now, our guilt has been great. Because of our sins, we and our kings and our priests have been subjected to the sword(S) and captivity,(T) to pillage and humiliation(U) at the hand of foreign kings, as it is today.
8 “But now, for a brief moment, the Lord our God has been gracious(V) in leaving us a remnant(W) and giving us a firm place[a](X) in his sanctuary, and so our God gives light to our eyes(Y) and a little relief in our bondage. 9 Though we are slaves,(Z) our God has not forsaken us in our bondage. He has shown us kindness(AA) in the sight of the kings of Persia: He has granted us new life to rebuild the house of our God and repair its ruins,(AB) and he has given us a wall of protection in Judah and Jerusalem.
10 “But now, our God, what can we say after this? For we have forsaken the commands(AC) 11 you gave through your servants the prophets when you said: ‘The land you are entering(AD) to possess is a land polluted(AE) by the corruption of its peoples. By their detestable practices(AF) they have filled it with their impurity from one end to the other. 12 Therefore, do not give your daughters in marriage to their sons or take their daughters for your sons. Do not seek a treaty of friendship with them(AG) at any time, that you may be strong(AH) and eat the good things(AI) of the land and leave it to your children as an everlasting inheritance.’(AJ)
13 “What has happened to us is a result of our evil(AK) deeds and our great guilt, and yet, our God, you have punished us less than our sins deserved(AL) and have given us a remnant like this. 14 Shall we then break your commands again and intermarry(AM) with the peoples who commit such detestable practices? Would you not be angry enough with us to destroy us,(AN) leaving us no remnant(AO) or survivor? 15 Lord, the God of Israel, you are righteous!(AP) We are left this day as a remnant.
