De religiösa ledarna planerar att döda Jesus
22 Nu närmade sig påskhögtiden - den judiska högtid då man bara äter bröd som bakats utan jäst.
2 Liksom tidigare sökte översteprästerna och de religiösa ledarna efter ett lämpligt tillfälle att mörda Jesus utan att folket märkte det. Annars var det risk för uppror.
Judas går med på att förråda Jesus
3 Då for Satan in i Judas Iskariot, som var en av de tolv lärjungarna.
4 Han gick till översteprästerna och befälhavarna för tempelvakten för att diskutera hur man utan att väcka uppmärksamhet skulle kunna arrestera Jesus.
5 De blev mycket förtjusta och erbjöd honom en summa pengar.
6 Han accepterade deras anbud, och från det ögonblicket väntade han på ett tillfälle att i hemlighet förråda Jesus.
Lärjungarna gör i ordning påskmåltiden
7 Så kom den dag i påskhögtiden när påsklammet skulle slaktas och ätas tillsammans med det ojästa brödet.
8 Därför skickade Jesus de båda lärjungarna Petrus och Johannes i förväg för att göra i ordning påskmåltiden så att de kunde äta den tillsammans.
9 Vart vill du att vi ska gå? frågade de.
10 Han svarade: Så snart ni kommer in i Jerusalem möter ni en man som bär en kruka med vatten. Följ efter honom till det hus som han går in i
11 och säg till mannen som äger huset: 'Vår Mästare ber dig att visa oss gästrummet, där han kan äta påskmåltiden tillsammans med sina lärjungar.'
12 Han kommer att ta er med en trappa upp till ett stort rum, som redan står i ordning. Det är platsen där ni ska göra i ordning måltiden åt oss.
13 När de kom in i staden fann de att allt var precis som Jesus hade sagt, och de gjorde i ordning påskmåltiden.
Jesus och hans lärjungar äter den sista måltiden
14 När tiden var inne för att äta påskmåltiden, slog Jesus och lärjungarna sig ner vid bordet.
15 Och han sa till dem: Av hela mitt hjärta har jag längtat efter att få äta denna påskmåltid med er innan mitt lidande börjar.
16 För jag säger er att jag inte kommer att äta den igen förrän vi ska fira den fullkomliga påsken i Guds rike.
17 Sedan tog han en bägare vin, och när han hade tackat Gud för vinet, sa han: Ta det här och dela det mellan er,
18 för jag kommer inte att dricka vin igen förrän Guds rike har kommit.
19 Därefter tog han en brödkaka, och när han hade tackat Gud för den, bröt han den i bitar och gav till dem och sa: Detta är min kropp som offras för er. Fira denna måltid så att ni aldrig glömmer mitt lidande och min död.
20 Efter måltiden räckte han dem ännu en bägare vin och sa: Detta är mitt blod som kommer att bekräfta det nya förbundet mellan Gud och människorna. Jag ger det för er så att era synder kan förlåtas.
21 Men här vid bordet finns en man som kommer att förråda mig fast han sitter bland oss som en vän.
22 Människosonen måste dö. Det är en del av Guds plan. Men fasa och förbannelse väntar den som förråder mig!
23 Då undrade lärjungarna vem av dem som någonsin skulle kunna göra något sådant.
24 Därefter började de sinsemellan diskutera vem som skulle anses störst bland dem.
25 Då sa Jesus till dem: I den här världen härskar makthavarna över folk samtidigt som de påstår att de är deras välgörare!
26 Men så ska det inte vara bland er. Störst är den som är minst, och ledare är den som tjänar andra.
27 I världen är det så att den som sätter sig vid bordet, är större än den som tjänar vid bordet. Men jag är hos er som en som tjänar.
28 Och därför att ni har varit trogna mot mig under dessa svåra dagar,
29 och därför att min Far har gett mig ett rike, så ger jag er här och nu rätten
30 att äta och dricka vid mitt bord i det riket. Och ni ska sitta på troner och döma Israels tolv stammar.
Jesus förutsäger Petrus förnekelse
31 Simon, Simon, Satan har begärt att få pröva dig och att sålla dig som vete,
32 men jag har bett för dig att din tro inte ska bli slagen i spillror. Därför, när du har ångrat dig och vänt om till mig igen, styrk då och bygg upp dina bröders tro.
33 Simon Petrus svarade: Herre, jag är beredd att gå i fängelse med dig, ja, till och med att dö för dig.
34 Men Jesus sa: Petrus, låt mig säga dig något. Innan tuppen hinner gala i morgon bitti, ska du tre gånger neka till att du känner mig.
35 Sedan frågade Jesus dem: När jag sände ut er för att predika de goda nyheterna och ni var utan både pengar och packning, hur klarade ni er då? Fint, svarade de.
36 Men nu, sa han, om ni har någon packning så ta med er den! Ta med pengar också! Och om ni inte har något svärd, så sälj era kläder och köp ett.
37 Nu är tiden inne när dessa ord om mig ska bli verklighet: 'Han ska dömas som en brottsling!' Ja, allt som är skrivet om mig av profeterna kommer att ske.
38 Herre, svarade de, vi har två svärd med oss.Det räcker, sa Jesus.
Jesus ber i Getsemane
39 Tillsammans med sina lärjungar lämnade han sedan rummet där de ätit påskmåltiden, och gick som vanligt till Oljeberget.
40 Där sa han till dem: Be till Gud så att ni kan stå emot när ni sätts på prov.
41-42 Själv gick han ett stenkast längre bort och böjde knä och bad: Far, om det är möjligt, så bevara mig från detta lidande. Men jag vill att din vilja ska ske och inte min.
43 Då visade sig en ängel från himlen och gav honom ny kraft.
44 Han hade nämligen en sådan ångest och bad så intensivt att hans svett föll som blodsdroppar till marken.
45 Till slut reste han sig och gick tillbaka till lärjungarna, men fann att de hade somnat, utmattade av sorg.
46 Hur kan ni sova nu! sa han. Res er upp och be till Gud att ni inte dukar under när ni blir prövade.
Jesus blir förrådd och arresterad
47 Men just när han sa detta närmade sig en folkhop ledd av Judas, en av hans tolv lärjungar. Judas gick fram till Jesus för att kyssa honom på kinden.
48 Men Jesus sa: Judas, hur kan du förråda Messias med en kyss?
49 Nu hade också lärjungarna fattat vad som höll på att hända och frågade upphetsat: Mästare, ska vi försvara oss? Vi tog med oss svärden!
50 Och en av dem slog till översteprästens tjänare, och högg av hans högra öra.
51 Men Jesus sa: Kämpa inte emot längre. Och han rörde vid mannens öra, och han blev genast botad.
52 Sedan vände sig Jesus till översteprästerna och befälhavarna för tempelvakten och de religiösa ledarna, som gick i täten för folkhopen, och sa: Är jag en brottsling eftersom ni kommer beväpnade med svärd och klubbor för att gripa mig?
53 Varför arresterade ni mig inte i templet? Jag har varit där varenda dag! Men nu ser ni er chans, för Satans makt har fritt spelrum.
Petrus förnekar att han känner Jesus
54 Då grep de Jesus och ledde honom till översteprästens hus, och Petrus följde med på avstånd.
55 Inne på gården gjorde soldaterna upp en eld för att värma sig och satte sig runt den, och Petrus slog sig ner bland dem.
56 En tjänsteflicka lade märke till honom i eldskenet och började titta närmare på honom. Till slut sa hon: Den där mannen var tillsammans med Jesus!
57 Petrus nekade ivrigt till det. Kvinna, sa han, jag känner inte ens den där mannen.
58 Efter en stund fick någon annan syn på honom och sa: Du tillhör också dem!Nej, det gör jag inte, svarade Petrus.
59 Ungefär en timme senare sa någon annan rakt ut: Jag vet att den här karln är en av Jesu lärjungar, och han kommer också från Galileen.
60 Men Petrus sa upprört: Vad pratar du om? Jag förstår inte vad du menar. Och när han sa det gol tuppen.
61 I det ögonblicket vände sig Jesus om och såg på Petrus. Han kom plötsligt ihåg vad Jesus hade sagt: Innan tuppen gal i morgon bitti ska du förneka mig tre gånger.
62 Då gick Petrus ut från gården och grät förtvivlat.
63-64 Nu började vakterna som bevakade Jesus att håna honom. De band för hans ögon och slog honom med knytnävarna och frågade: Visa nu att du är profet! Vem var det som slog dig den här gången?
65 Och de förolämpade honom på alla möjliga sätt.
Judarnas högsta domstol dömer Jesus till döden
66 Tidigt nästa morgon, i gryningen, samlades den judiska högsta domstolen, som bestod av översteprästerna och alla de högsta religiösa ledarna i landet. Och Jesus ställdes inför detta råd.
67-68 De frågade honom: Är du Messias? Han svarade: Om jag säger ja, så kommer ni inte att tro mig eller låta mig förklara min sak.
69 Men snart kommer den tid när Människosonen ska sitta på maktens tron vid den allsmäktige Gudens sida.
70 Upprörda ropade då allesammans: Påstår du att du är Guds Son? Han svarade: Ja, det är jag.
71 Behöver vi flera vittnen? ropade de. Vi har ju själva hört honom säga det.

Planer på att döda Jesus
(Matt 26:2-5; Mark 14:1-2; Joh 11:45-53)
22 Nu närmade sig det osyrade brödets högtid som kallas påsk[a]. 2 Översteprästerna och de skriftlärda sökte fortfarande efter ett sätt att bli av med Jesus. De var nämligen rädda för folket.
Judas beslutar att förråda Jesus
(Matt 26:14-16; Mark 14:10-11)
3 Då for Satan in i Judas, som kallades Iskariot och som var en av de tolv. 4 Judas gick till översteprästerna och officerarna vid tempelvakten för att diskutera med dem hur han skulle kunna förråda Jesus. 5 De blev mycket glada och erbjöd honom pengar, 6 som han genast accepterade. Sedan sökte han efter ett tillfälle att utan folkets vetskap förråda Jesus.
Lärjungarna förbereder påskmåltiden
(Matt 26:17-19; Mark 14:12-16)
7 Så kom det osyrade brödets högtidsdag[b] då påsklammet skulle slaktas. 8 Då skickade Jesus iväg Petrus och Johannes och sa: ”Gå och gör i ordning påskmåltiden, så att vi kan äta tillsammans.”
9 ”Var vill du att vi ska göra det någonstans?” frågade de.
10 Han svarade: ”När ni kommer in i staden, kommer ni att möta en man som bär på en vattenkruka. Följ efter honom till det hus som han går in i 11 och säg till mannen som äger huset: ’Vår Mästare säger: Var är salen där jag kan äta påskmåltiden med mina lärjungar?’ 12 Han kommer då att ta med er en trappa upp till ett stort rum som redan är förberett. Gör i ordning måltiden där.”
13 Då gick de iväg och fann att allt var precis som Jesus hade sagt, och de ordnade med påskmåltiden.
Jesus och hans lärjungar äter den sista måltiden
(Matt 26:20-29; Mark 14:17-25; 1 Kor 11:23-25)
14 När det sedan var dags, slog sig Jesus och hans tolv apostlar ner vid bordet.
15 Och han sa till dem: ”Jag har längtat så mycket efter att få äta den här påskmåltiden med er innan mitt lidande börjar. 16 För jag säger er nu att jag inte kommer att äta den igen förrän den får sin fullkomning i Guds rike.”
17 Sedan tog han en bägare, tackade Gud och sa: ”Ta det här och dela det mellan er. 18 Jag säger er att från och med nu ska jag inte dricka av det som vinstocken ger, förrän Guds rike har kommit.”
19 Efter det tog han ett bröd, tackade Gud, bröt det och gav det till dem och sa: ”Detta är min kropp som ska offras för er. Gör detta till minne av mig!”
20 Efter måltiden tog han på samma sätt bägaren och sa: ”Denna bägare är det nya förbundet genom mitt blod som utgjuts för er. 21 Men här vid bordet med mig finns hans hand som kommer att förråda mig.[c] 22 För Människosonen går bort, som det är bestämt, men ve den människa som förråder honom!”
23 Då började de fråga varandra vem som skulle kunna göra något sådant.
Vem är störst?
(Matt 20:25-28; 19:28; Mark 10:42-45)
24 Sedan började de diskutera med varandra vem av dem som kunde anses vara den störste.
25 Då sa han till dem: ”I den här världen uppträder kungarna som herrar över sina folk, och makthavare kallar sig folkets välgörare. 26 Men så får det inte vara bland er. Den störste av er ska vara som den yngste, och den som vill vara ledare ska vara de andras tjänare. 27 Vem är störst, den som äter vid bordet eller den som tjänar vid bordet? Är det inte den som äter vid bordet? Men jag är här hos er som en tjänare. 28 Ni är de som har stannat kvar hos mig under mina prövningar. 29 Samma kungliga makt som jag har fått av min Fader i himlen överlämnar jag åt er. 30 Och då ska ni få äta och dricka vid mitt bord i mitt rike, och ni ska få sitta på troner och döma Israels tolv stammar.
Jesus förutsäger att Petrus ska svika honom
(Matt 26:33-35; Mark 14:29-31; Joh 13:37-38)
31 Simon, Simon, Satan har begärt att få sålla er som vete. 32 Men jag har bett för dig att du inte helt ska tappa tron. Och när du en gång har vänt om, styrk då dina bröder.”
33 Simon sa: ”Herre, jag är beredd att både gå i fängelse och dö för dig!”
34 Men Jesus sa: ”Petrus, jag säger dig att innan tuppen hinner gala i natt, kommer du tre gånger att ha förnekat att du ens känner mig.”
35 Sedan frågade Jesus dem: ”När jag sände ut er, och ni varken hade börs, väska eller skor med er, saknade ni något då?”
”Nej, ingenting”, svarade de.
36 ”Men nu”, sa han, ”ska den som har börs ta med sig den, och likaså väska. Och om någon inte har något svärd, ska han sälja sin mantel och köpa ett.[d] 37 För jag säger er att de här orden i Skriften ska gå i uppfyllelse genom mig: ’Han räknades som en syndare’[e]. Ja, allt som har förutsagts om mig ska nu slutföras.”
38 ”Herre”, svarade de, ”vi har två svärd.”
”Det räcker”, sa Jesus.
Jesus ber i Getsemane
(Matt 26:36-46; Mark 14:32-42)
39 Jesus lämnade sedan staden tillsammans med sina lärjungar och gick som vanligt till Olivberget. 40 Där sa han till dem: ”Be att ni inte faller för frestelsen!”
41 Själv gick han ett stenkast längre bort och föll på knä och bad: 42 ”Fader, om du vill, låt mig slippa denna bägare! Men låt det bli som du vill, inte som jag vill.”
43 Då visade sig en ängel från himlen och gav honom kraft. 44 Men i sin ångest bad han allt intensivare, så hans svett föll som blodsdroppar till marken. 45 Till slut reste han sig och gick tillbaka till sina lärjungar och såg att de hade somnat, utmattade av sorg. 46 Då sa han till dem: ”Hur kan ni sova nu! Stå upp och be att ni inte faller för frestelsen!”
Jesus blir förrådd och arresterad

47 Medan Jesus fortfarande talade kom en folkhop dit ledd av honom som hette Judas, en av de tolv. Judas gick fram till Jesus för att ge honom en hälsningskyss. 48 Men Jesus sa: ”Judas, förråder du Människosonen med en kyss?”
49 När de som var med Jesus såg vad som höll på att hända, frågade de: ”Herre, ska vi slå till med våra svärd?” 50 Och en av dem slog till översteprästens tjänare och högg av honom högra örat.
51 Men Jesus sa: ”Inget mer våld!” Och så rörde han vid mannens öra och helade honom.
52 Sedan sa Jesus till de överstepräster och officerare vid tempelvakten och folkets ledare som hade kommit dit för att gripa honom: ”Som med en farlig brottsling har ni kommit med svärd och klubbor för att gripa mig! 53 Dag efter dag var jag tillsammans med er i templet utan att ni rörde mig. Men nu är det dags för er att handla, nu har mörkret makten.”
Petrus förnekar att han känner Jesus
(Matt 26:67-75; Mark 14:66-72; Joh 18:15-18; 18:25-27)
54 Då grep de Jesus och ledde honom till översteprästens hus, och Petrus följde med på avstånd.
55 Inne på gården gjorde de upp en eld och satte sig runt den, och Petrus slog sig ner mitt ibland dem.
56 En tjänsteflicka lade då märke till honom i eldskenet och började titta närmare på honom. Sedan sa hon: ”Den där mannen var också tillsammans med honom!”
57 Men Petrus nekade och sa: ”Nej, kvinna, jag känner inte den mannen.”
58 Efter en stund fick en annan syn på honom och sa: ”Du är också en av dem!”
”Nej, det är jag inte”, svarade Petrus.
59 Ungefär en timma senare var det en tredje som påstod: ”Säkert var den där karln med honom, han är ju från Galileen.”
60 Men Petrus sa: ”Jag förstår inte vad du menar, människa!” Och just när han sa det gol tuppen.
61 I samma stund vände sig Herren om och såg på Petrus, och då kom Petrus ihåg vad Herren hade sagt till honom: ”Innan tuppen gal i natt ska du förneka mig tre gånger.” 62 Och han gick ut och grät bittert.
63 De män som bevakade Jesus började nu håna och slå honom. 64 De band för hans ögon och slog honom och sa: ”Visa att du är en profet! Avslöja vem som slog dig.” 65 Och de förolämpade honom på alla möjliga sätt.
Det judiska rådet vill se Jesus dömd till döden
(Matt 26:63-65; Mark 14:61-64; Joh 18:19-21)
66 Tidigt nästa morgon samlades folkets ledare och översteprästerna och de skriftlärda. Jesus fördes till rådet. 67 De frågade honom: ”Är du Messias? Säg oss som det är!”
Han svarade: ”Om jag säger det, så kommer ni inte att tro mig, 68 och om jag börjar fråga er om något kommer ni inte att svara. 69 Men från och med nu kommer Människosonen att sitta på Maktens högra sida.[f]”
70 Då sa de allihop: ”Alltså är du Guds Son?”
Men Jesus svarade: ”Det är ni själva som säger att jag är det.”
71 Då sa de igen: ”Vi behöver väl inga fler vittnen! Nu har vi hört honom säga det själv.”

Preparing the Passover
22 Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, which is called the Passover, was approaching.(A) 2 The chief priests and the scribes were looking for a way to put Him to death; for they were afraid of the people [who listened devotedly to His teaching, and who respected His spiritual wisdom].
3 Then Satan entered Judas, the one called Iscariot, who was one of the twelve [disciples]. 4 And he went away and discussed with the chief priests and officers how he might betray Him and hand Him over to them. 5 They were delighted and agreed with him to give him money. 6 So he consented, and began looking for a good opportunity to betray Jesus to them [at a time when He was] separated from the crowd [because the people might riot or stop them from seizing Him].
7 Then came the preparation day of [a]Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.(B) 8 So Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and prepare the Passover meal for us, so that we may eat it.” 9 They asked Him, “Where do You want us to prepare it?” 10 He replied, “When you have entered the city, a [b]man carrying an earthen jar of water will meet you; follow him into the house that he enters. 11 And say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks, “Where is the guest room in which I may eat the Passover with My disciples?”’ 12 Then he will show you a large upstairs room, furnished [with carpets and dining couches]; prepare the meal there.” 13 They left and found it just as He had told them; and they prepared the Passover.
The Lord’s Supper
14 When the hour [for the meal] had come, Jesus reclined at the table, and the apostles with Him. 15 He said to them, “I have earnestly wanted to eat this Passover with you before I suffer; 16 for I say to you, I will not eat it again until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” 17 And when He had taken a cup and [c]given thanks, He said, “Take this and share it among yourselves;(C) 18 for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine from now on until the kingdom of God comes.” 19 And when He had taken bread and given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” 20 And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup, which is poured out for you, is the new covenant [ratified] in My blood. 21 But listen, the hand of the one betraying Me is with Mine on the table.(D) 22 For indeed, the Son of Man is going as it has been determined; but woe (judgment is coming) to that man by whom He is betrayed and handed over!” 23 And they began to discuss among themselves which one of them it might be who was going to do this.
Who Is Greatest?
24 Now a dispute also arose among them as to which of them was regarded to be the greatest. 25 Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles have absolute power and lord it over them; and those in authority over them are called ‘Benefactors.’(E) 26 But it is not to be this way with you; on the contrary, the one who is the greatest among you must become like the youngest [and least privileged], and the [one who is the] leader, like the servant. 27 For who is the greater, the one who reclines at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at the table? But I am among you as the one who serves.
28 “You are those who have remained and have stood by Me in My trials; 29 and just as My Father has granted Me a kingdom, I grant you [the privilege] 30 that you may eat and drink at My table in My kingdom, and you will sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
31 “Simon, Simon (Peter), listen! Satan has demanded permission to sift [all of] you like grain;(F) 32 but I have prayed [especially] for you [Peter], that your faith [and confidence in Me] may not fail; and you, once you have turned back again [to Me], strengthen and support your brothers [in the faith].” 33 And Peter said to Him, “Lord, I am ready to go with You both to prison and to death!”(G) 34 Jesus said, “I say to you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will [utterly] deny three times that you know Me.”
35 And He said to them, “When I sent you out without a money belt and [provision] bag and [extra] sandals, did you lack anything?” They answered, “Nothing.” 36 Then He said to them, “But now, he who has a money belt is to take it along, and also his [provision] bag, and he who has no sword is to sell his coat and buy one. 37 For I tell you that this [Scripture] which is written must be completed and fulfilled in Me: ‘And He was counted with the criminals’; for that which refers to Me has its fulfillment [and is settled].”(H) 38 They said, “Lord, look, here are two swords.” And He said to them, “It is enough.”
The Garden of Gethsemane
39 And He came out and went, as was His habit, to the Mount of Olives; and the disciples followed Him. 40 When He arrived at the place [called Gethsemane], He said to them, “Pray continually that you may not fall into temptation.”(I) 41 And He withdrew from them about a stone’s throw, and knelt down and prayed, 42 saying, “Father, if You are willing, remove this cup [of divine wrath] from Me; yet not My will, but [always] Yours be done.” 43 [d]Now an angel appeared to Him from heaven, strengthening Him. 44 And being in agony [deeply distressed and anguished; almost to the point of death], He prayed more intently; and His [e]sweat became like drops of blood, falling down on the ground.(J) 45 When He rose from prayer, He came to the disciples and found them sleeping from sorrow, 46 and He said to them, “Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray that you may not fall into temptation.”
Judas Betrays Jesus
47 While He was still speaking, a crowd came, and the man called Judas, one of the twelve [disciples], was leading the way for them. He approached Jesus to [f]kiss Him.(K) 48 And Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” 49 When those who were around Him saw what was about to happen, they said, “Lord, should we strike with the sword?” 50 And [g]one of them struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his right ear.(L) 51 But Jesus replied, “Stop! No more of this.” And He touched the ear and healed him. 52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests and officers of the temple and elders [of the Sanhedrin] who had come out against Him, “Have you come out with swords and clubs as you would against a robber? 53 Day after day when I was with you in the temple, you did not lay hands on Me; but this hour and the power and authority of darkness are yours.”
Peter’s Denials
54 Then they seized Him, and led Him away and brought Him to the [elegant] house of the [Jewish] [h]high priest. And Peter was following at a [safe] distance. 55 After they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat among them.(M) 56 And a servant-girl, seeing him as he sat in the firelight and looking intently at him, said, “This man was with Him too.” 57 But Peter denied it, saying, “Woman, I do not know Him!” 58 A little later someone else saw him and said, “You are one of them too.” But Peter said, “Man, I am not!” 59 After about an hour had passed, another man began to insist, “This man was with Him, for he is a Galilean too.” 60 But Peter said, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about.” Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. 61 The Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him, “Before a rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.” 62 And he went out and wept bitterly [deeply grieved and distressed].
63 Now the men who were holding Jesus in custody were mocking and ridiculing Him [and treating Him with contempt] and beating Him. 64 They blindfolded Him and asked, “Prophesy, who is it that struck You?” 65 And they were saying many other [evil and slanderous] things against Him, blaspheming [speaking sacrilegiously and abusively about] Him.
Jesus before the Sanhedrin
66 When day came, the Council of the elders of the people (Sanhedrin, Jewish High Court) assembled, both chief priests and scribes; and they led Jesus away to the council chamber, saying, 67 “If You are the Christ (the Messiah, the Anointed), tell us.” But He said to them, “If I tell you, you will not believe [what I say], 68 and if I ask a question, you will not answer. 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God.”(N) 70 And they all said, “Are You the Son of God, then?” He replied, “[i]It is just as you say.” 71 Then they asked, “What further need of testimony do we have? For we ourselves have heard it from His own mouth.”

- Luke 22:7 This remembrance lasted eight days. The Passover lambs were selected on the tenth of Nisan (March/April) and sacrificed on the fourteenth of Nisan (the first day of the feast). The Passover meal was eaten that same night (15 Nisan). This was immediately followed by the Feast of Unleavened Bread (15-21 Nisan). The terms “Passover” and “The Feast of Unleavened Bread” were used interchangeably.
- Luke 22:10 It would have been unusual to see a manservant carrying a jar of water, because that was considered a woman’s task.
- Luke 22:17 Giving thanks consisted of two benedictions, one over the wine (Blessed are You, Lord our God, who has created the fruit of the vine!) and one for the return of the Feast Day with all it implied, as well as being allowed once more to witness it.
- Luke 22:43 This particular encounter between Jesus and the ministering angel is found only in Luke’s gospel. Most early mss do not contain vv 43, 44.

Judas Agrees to Betray Jesus(A)
22 Now the Festival of Unleavened Bread, called the Passover, was approaching,(B) 2 and the chief priests and the teachers of the law were looking for some way to get rid of Jesus,(C) for they were afraid of the people. 3 Then Satan(D) entered Judas, called Iscariot,(E) one of the Twelve. 4 And Judas went to the chief priests and the officers of the temple guard(F) and discussed with them how he might betray Jesus. 5 They were delighted and agreed to give him money.(G) 6 He consented, and watched for an opportunity to hand Jesus over to them when no crowd was present.
The Last Supper(H)(I)(J)(K)(L)
7 Then came the day of Unleavened Bread on which the Passover lamb had to be sacrificed.(M) 8 Jesus sent Peter and John,(N) saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.”
9 “Where do you want us to prepare for it?” they asked.
10 He replied, “As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, 11 and say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ 12 He will show you a large room upstairs, all furnished. Make preparations there.”
13 They left and found things just as Jesus had told them.(O) So they prepared the Passover.
14 When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles(P) reclined at the table.(Q) 15 And he said to them, “I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.(R) 16 For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God.”(S)

20 In the same way, after the supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant(U) in my blood, which is poured out for you.[a] 21 But the hand of him who is going to betray me is with mine on the table.(V) 22 The Son of Man(W) will go as it has been decreed.(X) But woe to that man who betrays him!” 23 They began to question among themselves which of them it might be who would do this.
24 A dispute also arose among them as to which of them was considered to be greatest.(Y) 25 Jesus said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them; and those who exercise authority over them call themselves Benefactors. 26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest,(Z) and the one who rules like the one who serves.(AA) 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves.(AB) 28 You are those who have stood by me in my trials. 29 And I confer on you a kingdom,(AC) just as my Father conferred one on me, 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom(AD) and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.(AE)

34 Jesus answered, “I tell you, Peter, before the rooster crows today, you will deny three times that you know me.”
35 Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals,(AK) did you lack anything?”
“Nothing,” they answered.
36 He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. 37 It is written: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors’[b];(AL) and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.”
38 The disciples said, “See, Lord, here are two swords.”
“That’s enough!” he replied.
Jesus Prays on the Mount of Olives(AM)
39 Jesus went out as usual(AN) to the Mount of Olives,(AO) and his disciples followed him. 40 On reaching the place, he said to them, “Pray that you will not fall into temptation.”(AP) 41 He withdrew about a stone’s throw beyond them, knelt down(AQ) and prayed, 42 “Father, if you are willing, take this cup(AR) from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”(AS) 43 An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.(AT) 44 And being in anguish, he prayed more earnestly, and his sweat was like drops of blood falling to the ground.[c]
45 When he rose from prayer and went back to the disciples, he found them asleep, exhausted from sorrow. 46 “Why are you sleeping?” he asked them. “Get up and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.”(AU)
Jesus Arrested(AV)
47 While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, 48 but Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”
49 When Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?”(AW) 50 And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.
51 But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.
52 Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard,(AX) and the elders, who had come for him, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? 53 Every day I was with you in the temple courts,(AY) and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour(AZ)—when darkness reigns.”(BA)
Peter Disowns Jesus(BB)
54 Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest.(BC) Peter followed at a distance.(BD) 55 And when some there had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. 56 A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, “This man was with him.”
57 But he denied it. “Woman, I don’t know him,” he said.
58 A little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.”
“Man, I am not!” Peter replied.
59 About an hour later another asserted, “Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.”(BE)
60 Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. 61 The Lord(BF) turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.”(BG) 62 And he went outside and wept bitterly.
The Guards Mock Jesus(BH)
63 The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. 64 They blindfolded him and demanded, “Prophesy! Who hit you?” 65 And they said many other insulting things to him.(BI)
Jesus Before Pilate and Herod(BJ)(BK)(BL)
66 At daybreak the council(BM) of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and the teachers of the law, met together,(BN) and Jesus was led before them. 67 “If you are the Messiah,” they said, “tell us.”
Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe me, 68 and if I asked you, you would not answer.(BO) 69 But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.”(BP)
70 They all asked, “Are you then the Son of God?”(BQ)
He replied, “You say that I am.”(BR)
71 Then they said, “Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips.”
