Jesus undervisar sina lärjungar om bön

(Matt 6:9-13; 7:7-11)

11 En gång hade Jesus stannat på ett ställe för att be, och när han hade slutat sa en av hans lärjungar till honom: ”Herre, lär oss att be, så som Johannes lärde sina lärjungar att be.”

2 Då sa Jesus: ”Så här ska ni säga:

’Fader,
låt ditt namn bli helgat.
Låt ditt rike komma.
3 Ge oss den mat vi behöver, dag för dag,
4 och förlåt oss våra synder,
    för vi förlåter också var och en som står i skuld till oss.
Hjälp oss när vi prövas[a].’ ”

5 Sedan sa han till dem: ”Vem av er skulle kunna ha en vän som någon gick till mitt i natten och sa: ’Min vän, låna mig tre brödkakor! 6 En av mina vänner har kommit resande, och jag har inget att bjuda honom på.’ 7 Och vännen därinne skulle då svara och säga: ’Dörren är redan låst och mina barn ligger hos mig i sängen, så jag kan inte stiga upp och ge dem till dig.’ 8 Men jag säger er att även om han inte stiger upp och ger honom något därför att han är en vän, så gör han det för att slippa skämma ut sig[b]. 9 Därför säger jag er: be, så ska ni få. Sök, så ska ni finna. Knacka på, och dörren ska öppnas. 10 För den som ber, han får, och den som söker, han finner. Och för var och en som knackar på ska dörren öppnas.

11 Kan någon far, om hans barn ber om en fisk, ge det en orm, 12 eller en skorpion, när barnet ber om ett ägg? 13 Om nu ni, som är onda, har förstånd att ge goda gåvor till era barn, skulle då inte er Fader i himlen ge den heliga Anden till dem som ber honom?”

Jesus beskylls för att vara i förbund med djävulen

(Matt 12:22-30; Mark 3:22-27)

14 En annan gång drev Jesus ut en ond ande som var stum. Och när den onda anden for ut, började den stumme tala. Folk blev häpna, 15 men några sa: ”Han driver ut de onda andarna med hjälp av Beelsebul[c], de onda andarnas härskare.” 16 Några andra försökte sätta honom på prov och krävde ett tecken från himlen.

17 Men Jesus förstod vad de var ute efter och sa till dem: ”Ni vet ju att ett rike där man strider mot varandra går under och hus faller på hus. 18 Om Satan därför är kluven och strider mot sig själv kan väl inte hans rike bestå? Ni menar ju att jag driver ut de onda andarna med hjälp av Beelsebul. 19 Och om jag driver ut de onda andarna med hjälp av Beelsebul, med vilken kraft driver då era egna anhängare ut dem? De ska därför bli era domare. 20 Men om det är med Guds finger jag driver ut de onda andarna, då har ju Guds rike kommit till er. 21 Om en stark, beväpnad man bevakar sitt hus är hans ägodelar skyddade. 22 Men om någon starkare dyker upp, besegrar han honom och tar ifrån honom hans vapenrustning, som han litade på, och fördelar bytet. 23 Den som inte är för mig är emot mig, och den som inte samlar med mig, han skingrar.

Den orena andens återkomst

(Matt 12:43-45)

24 När en oren ande drivs ut ur en människa, irrar den omkring i vattenlösa trakter och letar efter ro, utan att hitta någon. Då säger den: ’Jag vänder tillbaka till det hus jag kom ifrån.’ 25 Och när den gör det och finner huset rent och iordningställt, 26 letar den reda på sju andar till, ännu värre än den själv. Tillsammans återvänder de sedan och bosätter sig där. Den människan får det då långt värre än hon hade det förut.”

27 Medan han talade ropade en kvinna i folkmassan: ”Lycklig är den kvinna som har fått föda och amma dig.”

28 Men han svarade: ”Säg istället: Lyckliga är de som får höra Guds ord och tar vara på det.”

Jesus varnar för otro

(Matt 12:39-42)

29 Från alla håll trängde sig nu folk på, och Jesus talade till dem och sa: ”Detta släkte är ett ont släkte. De kräver ett tecken, men det enda tecken de ska få se är Jona-tecknet.[d] 30 Så som Jona blev ett tecken för Nineves invånare, så ska Människosonen bli ett tecken för detta släkte.

31 Söderns drottning[e] ska på domens dag uppstå tillsammans med detta släkte och döma det, för hon kom från jordens yttersta gräns för att lyssna till Salomos vishet. Men här finns en som är större än Salomo. 32 Invånarna i Nineve ska på domens dag uppstå tillsammans med detta släkte och döma det, för de vände om när Jona predikade. Men här finns en som är större än Jona.

Släpp in ljuset

(Matt 6:22-23)

33 När man tänder en lampa gömmer man den inte i ett hörn eller täcker över den med ett sädesmått, utan man ställer den i lampstället så att alla som kommer in kan se ljuset. 34 Ditt öga är kroppens lampa. Om ditt öga är friskt, så får hela din kropp ljus. Men om det är dåligt blir det mörkt i din kropp. 35 Se därför till att ljuset i dig inte är mörker. 36 Om hela din kropp får ljus och ingen del ligger i mörker, blir den helt och hållet ljus, som när en lampa låter sitt sken flöda över dig.”

Jesus anklagar de religiösa ledarna

(Matt 23:1-36)

37 Medan Jesus höll på att tala till folket, bjöd en av fariseerna hem honom på mat, och Jesus följde med och slog sig ner vid bordet. 38 Farisén såg att han inte först tvättade sig och blev förvånad.

39 Herren sa till honom: ”Ni fariseer rengör nog utsidan av bägare och fat, men inom er är ni fulla av girighet och ondska. 40 Förstår ni då inte att han som har gjort utsidan också har gjort insidan? 41 Nej, ge det som finns därinne till de fattiga, så ska allting bli rent för er.

42 Ve er, fariseer! Ni ger Gud en tiondel[f] av mynta och vinruta, och av alla grönsaker, men ni struntar i rättvisan och kärleken till Gud. Visst ska ni göra det ena, men försumma inte det andra.

43 Ve er, fariseer, som älskar att sitta på främsta raden i synagogorna och bli hälsade på torgen! 44 Ve er, för ni är som omarkerade gravar, som människor trampar på utan att märka något.[g]”

45 ”Mästare”, sa en av de laglärda, ”när du talar så där förolämpar du oss också.”

46 ”Ve er laglärda också”, sa Jesus, ”för ni lägger bördor på människorna som de knappt kan bära, men vill inte röra ett finger för att flytta dem. 47 Ve er som reser gravmonument över profeterna, som era förfäder mördade! 48 Ni vittnar så om era förfäders gärningar och accepterar dem. De dödade profeterna, och ni bygger gravar över dem.

49 Därför har Gud i sin vishet sagt: ’Jag ska sända dem profeter och apostlar. Några ska de döda och andra ska de förfölja.’ 50 Men därför ska också detta släkte få stå till svars för morden på alla de profeter som dödats sedan världens skapelse, 51 ända från Abel till Sakarja, han som blev mördad mellan altaret och templet.[h] Ja, jag säger er att detta släkte ska ställas till svars för allt detta.

52 Ve er, laglärda, som har tagit nyckeln till kunskapen. Ni har själva inte gått in, och andra som vill gå in hindrar ni.”

53 När han gick därifrån började fariseerna och de skriftlärda ansätta honom hårt och överösa honom med besvärliga frågor 54 för att få honom att säga något som de kunde arrestera honom för.

Det Jesus kritiserade dem för var inte deras överdrivna vilja att lyda lagen, utan det faktum att de inte alls förstod lagens egentliga syfte.

Herrens bön

11 En gång var Jesus på en plats och bad. När han hade slutat sin bön, sade en av hans lärjungar till honom: "Herre, lär oss att be, liksom Johannes lärde sina lärjungar." 2 Då sade han till dem: "När ni ber skall ni säga:

Fader, helgat blive ditt namn.
Komme ditt rike.
3 Ge oss var dag vårt bröd
för dagen.
4 Och förlåt oss våra synder,
ty också vi förlåter var och en
som står i skuld till oss.
Och för oss inte in i frestelse."

Uthållig bön

5 Han sade till dem: "Om någon av er har en vän och går till honom mitt i natten och säger: Käre vän, låna mig tre bröd. 6 En vän som är på resa har kommit till mig, och jag har ingenting att sätta fram åt honom, 7 - vem av er skulle då inifrån huset få till svar: Låt mig vara i fred. Dörren är redan stängd, och mina barn och jag har gått och lagt oss. Jag kan inte stiga upp och ge dig något. 8 Jag säger er: Även om han inte stiger upp och ger honom något för att det är hans vän, så kommer han att stiga upp och ge honom allt vad han behöver för att inte själv bli utskämd.[a]

9 Jag säger er: Be och ni skall få, sök och ni skall finna, bulta och dörren skall öppnas för er. 10 Ty var och en som ber, han får, och den som söker, han finner, och för den som bultar skall dörren öppnas. 11 Finns det bland er någon far som skulle ge sin son en orm när han ber om en fisk, 12 eller en skorpion när han ber om ett ägg? 13 Om ni som är onda förstår att ge era barn goda gåvor, hur mycket mer skall då inte er Fader i himlen ge den helige Ande åt dem som ber honom?"

Jesus eller Beelsebul

14 Jesus drev vid ett tillfälle ut en ond ande som var stum. När den onde anden hade farit ut, talade den stumme, och folket förundrade sig. 15 Men några av dem sade: "Det är med hjälp av Beelsebul,[b] de onda andarnas furste, som han driver ut de onda andarna." 16 Andra ville snärja honom och begärde av honom ett tecken från himlen. 17 Men han visste vad de tänkte och sade till dem: "Ett rike som har kommit i strid med sig självt blir ödelagt, och hus faller på hus. 18 Om nu Satan har kommit i strid med sig själv, hur kan då hans rike bestå? Ni säger att det är med hjälp av Beelsebul som jag driver ut de onda andarna. 19 Men om det är med hjälp av Beelsebul som jag driver ut de onda andarna, med vems hjälp driver då era söner ut dem? De kommer därför att vara era domare. 20 Men om det är med Guds finger jag driver ut de onda andarna, då har Guds rike kommit till er. 21 När den starke beväpnad vaktar sin gård får hans ägodelar vara i fred. 22 Men kommer det en som är ännu starkare och besegrar honom, då tar den mannen ifrån honom alla vapen som han litade på och fördelar bytet. 23 Den som inte är med mig är emot mig, och den som inte samlar med mig, han skingrar.

En ond andes återkomst

24 När en oren ande har farit ut ur en människa, vandrar han genom ökentrakter för att leta efter en viloplats. Men om han inte finner någon tänker han: Jag vill vända tillbaka till mitt hus som jag lämnade. 25 När han så kommer och finner det städat och pyntat, 26 ger han sig av och tar med sig sju andra andar som är värre än han själv, och de går in och bor där. För den människan blir det sista värre än det första."

27 Då Jesus sade detta, ropade en kvinna i folkskaran: "Saligt är det moderliv som har burit dig och saliga de bröst som du har diat." 28 Han sade: "Säg hellre: Saliga är de som lyssnar till Guds ord och bevarar det."

Jonas tecken

29 Då folk strömmade till, sade Jesus: "Detta släkte är ett ont släkte. Det begär ett tecken, men det skall inte få något annat än Jonas tecken. 30 Ty liksom Jona var ett tecken för folket i Nineve, så skall Människosonen vara det för detta släkte. 31 Drottningen av Söderlandet skall vid domen träda upp mot detta släkte och bli det till dom. Ty hon kom från jordens yttersta gräns för att lyssna till Salomos vishet. Och se, här är mer än Salomo. 32 Män från Nineve skall vid domen träda upp mot detta släkte och bli det till dom. Ty de omvände sig vid Jonas predikan. Och se, här är mer än Jona.

Ögat är kroppens lykta

33 Ingen tänder ett ljus och ställer det på en undangömd plats eller under skäppan, utan man sätter det på ljushållaren, så att de som kommer in ser skenet. 34 Ditt öga är kroppens lykta. När ditt öga är friskt får också hela din kropp ljus, men när det är sjukt ligger också din kropp i mörker. 35 Se därför till att ljuset i dig inte är mörker. 36 Om hela din kropp har ljus och ingen del ligger i mörker, då får den ljus helt och hållet, som när ljuset från en lampa lyser på dig med sitt klara sken."

Jesu ord mot fariseer och laglärda

37 När Jesus hade talat, bjöd en farisé honom hem till sig, och han gick in och lade sig till bords. 38 Farisén blev förvånad när han såg att Jesus inte tvättade sig före måltiden. 39 Men Herren sade till honom: "Ni fariseer rengör utsidan av bägare och fat, men ert inre är fullt av girighet och ondska. 40 Ni dårar, har inte han som gjorde utsidan också gjort insidan? 41 Ge därför ert inre som gåva, så blir allting rent för er.

42 Ve er, ni fariseer! Ni ger tionde av mynta, ruta[c] och alla slags grönsaker men bryr er inte om rätten och kärleken till Gud. Det ena borde ni göra utan att försumma det andra.

43 Ve er, fariseer! Ni älskar den främsta platsen i synagogorna och tycker om att bli hälsade på torgen. 44 Ve er, ni liknar gravar som man inte ser och som folk trampar på utan att veta om det."

45 En av de laglärda sade då till honom: "Mästare, när du säger så, förolämpar du även oss." 46 Han svarade: "Ja, ve också över er, ni laglärda! Ni lägger på människorna bördor som är svåra att bära, men själva rör ni inte ett finger för att lätta dem.

47 Ve er! Ni bygger gravvårdar över profeterna som era fäder mördade. 48 Ni är alltså vittnen till vad era fäder gjorde och samtycker till det. De dödade profeterna och ni bygger gravvårdar över dem. 49 Därför har också Guds vishet sagt: Jag skall sända till dem profeter och apostlar, och en del av dem skall de mörda och förfölja. 50 Så skall av detta släkte utkrävas alla profeters blod, som har utgjutits från världens begynnelse, 51 från Abels blod ända till Sakarjas blod, som utgöts mellan altaret och templet. Ja, jag säger er: Det skall utkrävas av detta släkte.

52 Ve er, ni laglärda! Ni har tagit bort nyckeln till kunskapen. Själva har ni inte kommit in, och dem som är på väg in har ni hindrat."

53 När han gick därifrån, började de skriftlärda och fariseerna angripa honom häftigt och ställa många frågor till honom. 54 De vaktade på honom för att fälla honom genom något som han sade.

Jesús enseña sobre la oración

11 Aconteció que estando Jesús orando en cierto lugar, cuando terminó, le dijo uno de Sus discípulos: «Señor, enséñanos a orar, así como Juan enseñó también a sus discípulos». 2 (A)Y Él les dijo: «Cuando oren, digan:

“[a] Padre, santificado sea Tu nombre.
Venga Tu reino.
3 -”Danos hoy[b] el pan nuestro de cada día[c](B) .
4 -”Y perdónanos nuestros pecados,
Porque también nosotros perdonamos a todos los que nos deben(C) .
Y no nos metas[d] en tentación”».

5 También les dijo: «Supongamos que uno de ustedes[e]tiene un amigo, y va a él a medianoche y le dice: “Amigo, préstame tres panes, 6 porque un amigo mío ha llegado de viaje a mi casa, y no tengo nada que ofrecerle[f]”; 7 y aquel, respondiendo desde adentro, le dice: “No me molestes; la puerta ya está cerrada, y mis hijos y yo estamos acostados[g]; no puedo levantarme para darte nada”. 8 Les digo que aunque no se levante a darle algo por ser su amigo, no obstante, por su importunidad(D)se levantará y le dará cuanto necesite.

9 »Así que Yo les digo: (E) pidan, y se les dará; busquen, y hallarán; llamen, y se les abrirá. 10 Porque todo el que pide, recibe; y el que busca, halla; y al que llama, se le abrirá.

11 »O supongan que a uno de ustedes que es padre, su hijo le pide[h] pan, ¿acaso le dará una piedra? O si le pide un[i] pescado, ¿acaso le dará una serpiente en lugar del pescado? 12 O si le[j]pide un huevo, ¿acaso le dará un escorpión? 13 Pues si ustedes siendo malos, saben dar buenas dádivas a sus hijos, ¿cuánto más su Padre celestial[k]dará el Espíritu Santo a los que se lo pidan(F)?».

Jesús y Beelzebú

14 (G)Jesús estaba echando fuera un demonio que era mudo, y cuando el demonio salió, el mudo habló; y las multitudes se maravillaron. 15 Pero algunos de ellos dijeron: «Él echa fuera los demonios por Beelzebú(H), príncipe de los demonios(I)».

16 Y otros, para poner[l] a prueba a Jesús, demandaban de Él una señal[m](J) del cielo. 17 (K)Pero conociendo Él sus pensamientos, les dijo: «Todo reino dividido contra sí mismo es asolado; y una casa dividida contra sí misma[n], se derrumba. 18 Y si también Satanás(L)está dividido contra sí mismo, ¿cómo permanecerá en pie su reino? Porque ustedes dicen que Yo echo fuera demonios por Beelzebú(M). 19 Y si Yo echo fuera demonios por Beelzebú(N), ¿por quién los echan fuera los hijos de ustedes? Por tanto, ellos serán sus jueces. 20 Pero si Yo por el dedo de Dios(O)echo fuera los demonios, entonces el reino de Dios ha llegado(P)a ustedes.

21 »Cuando un[o] hombre fuerte, bien armado, custodia su palacio, sus bienes están seguros[p] . 22 Pero cuando uno más fuerte que él lo ataca y lo vence, le quita todas sus armas en las cuales había confiado y distribuye su botín. 23 El que no está a Mi lado, contra Mí está; y el que a Mi lado no recoge, desparrama(Q).

24 (R)Cuando el espíritu inmundo sale del hombre, pasa por lugares áridos buscando descanso; y al no hallarlo, dice: “Volveré a mi casa de donde salí”. 25 Y al llegar, la encuentra barrida y arreglada. 26 Entonces va y toma consigo otros siete espíritus peores que él, y entrando, moran allí; y el estado final de aquel hombre resulta peor que el primero».

La verdadera dicha

27 Mientras Jesús decía estas cosas, una de las mujeres en la multitud alzó la voz y dijo: «¡Dichosa la matriz[q] que te concibió[r] y los senos que te criaron(S)!». 28 «Al contrario», le contestó Jesús, «dichosos los que oyen la palabra de Dios y la guardan(T)».

La gente demanda señal

29 Como la multitud se aglomeraba, Jesús comenzó a decir: «(U)Esta generación es una generación perversa; busca señal(V), y ninguna señal se le dará, sino la señal de Jonás. 30 Porque de la misma manera que Jonás vino a ser una señal(W)para los ninivitas, así también lo será el Hijo del Hombre para esta generación.

31 »La Reina del Sur se levantará en el juicio con los hombres de esta generación y los condenará, porque ella vino desde los confines de la tierra para oír la sabiduría de Salomón(X) ; y miren, algo más grande que Salomón está aquí. 32 Los hombres de Nínive se levantarán en el juicio con esta generación y la condenarán, porque ellos se arrepintieron con la predicación de Jonás(Y); y miren, algo más grande que Jonás está aquí.

La lámpara del cuerpo

33 »Nadie, cuando enciende una lámpara, la pone en un sótano ni debajo de una vasija, sino sobre el candelero, para que los que entren vean la luz(Z) . 34 (AA)La lámpara de tu cuerpo es tu ojo; cuando tu ojo está sano[s], también todo tu cuerpo está lleno de luz; pero cuando está malo, también tu cuerpo está lleno de oscuridad. 35 Mira, pues, que la luz que en ti hay no sea oscuridad. 36 Así que, si todo tu cuerpo está lleno de luz, sin tener parte alguna en tinieblas, estará totalmente iluminado como cuando la lámpara te alumbra con sus rayos».

Jesús denuncia a los fariseos y a los intérpretes de la ley

37 Cuando terminó de hablar, un fariseo le rogó* que comiera con él; y Jesús entró y se sentó[t] a la mesa. 38 El fariseo al ver esto, se sorprendió de que Jesús no se hubiera lavado[u] primero antes de comer, según el ritual judío(AB).

39 Pero el Señor(AC) le dijo: «Ahora bien, ustedes los fariseos limpian lo de afuera del vaso y del plato; pero por dentro están llenos[v]de robo y de maldad(AD). 40 Necios(AE), el que hizo lo de afuera, ¿no hizo también lo de adentro? 41 Den más bien lo que está dentro[w]como obra de caridad(AF), y entonces[x]todo les será limpio(AG).

42 »Pero ¡ay de ustedes, fariseos! Porque pagan el diezmo de(AH) la menta y la ruda y toda clase de hortaliza, y sin embargo pasan por alto la justicia y el amor de Dios; pero esto es lo que debían haber practicado sin descuidar lo otro(AI) . 43 ¡Ay de ustedes, fariseos! Porque aman los primeros asientos en las sinagogas y los saludos respetuosos en las plazas(AJ). 44 ¡Ay de ustedes! Porque son como sepulcros(AK)que no se ven, sobre los que andan los hombres sin saberlo».

45 Respondiendo uno de los intérpretes de la ley[y](AL), le dijo*: «Maestro, cuando dices esto, también a nosotros nos insultas». 46 Y Él dijo: «¡Ay también de ustedes, intérpretes de la ley(AM)! Porque cargan a los hombres con cargas difíciles de llevar, y ustedes ni siquiera tocan las cargas con uno de sus dedos(AN). 47 ¡Ay de ustedes! Porque edifican los sepulcros de[z]los profetas(AO), y fueron los padres de ustedes quienes los mataron. 48 De modo que son testigos, y aprueban las acciones de sus padres; porque ellos los mataron y ustedes edifican sus sepulcros.

49 »(AP) Por eso la sabiduría de Dios también dijo: “Les enviaré profetas y apóstoles(AQ) , y de ellos, matarán a algunos y perseguirán[aa] a otros, 50 para que la sangre de todos los profetas, derramada desde la fundación del mundo(AR), se le cargue[ab]a esta generación. 51 Desde la sangre de Abel(AS)hasta la sangre de Zacarías(AT), que pereció entre el altar y la casa de Dios. Sí, les digo que le será cargada[ac]a esta generación”.

52 »¡Ay de ustedes, intérpretes de la ley(AU) ! Porque han quitado la llave del conocimiento. Ustedes mismos no entraron, y a los que estaban entrando se lo impidieron(AV) ».

53 Cuando salió de allí, los escribas y los fariseos comenzaron a acosar en gran manera, y a interrogar minuciosamente a Jesús sobre muchas cosas, 54 tramando contra Él(AW) para ver si lo podían atrapar en algo que dijera[ad](AX).

Jesus’ Teaching on Prayer(A)(B)

11 One day Jesus was praying(C) in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord,(D) teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”

2 He said to them, “When you pray, say:

“‘Father,[a]
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom(E) come.[b]
3 Give us each day our daily bread.
4 Forgive us our sins,
    for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.[c](F)
And lead us not into temptation.[d]’”(G)

5 Then Jesus said to them, “Suppose you have a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; 6 a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have no food to offer him.’ 7 And suppose the one inside answers, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.’ 8 I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity[e] he will surely get up and give you as much as you need.(H)

9 “So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you;(I) seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

11 “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for[f] a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

Jesus and Beelzebul(J)(K)

14 Jesus was driving out a demon that was mute. When the demon left, the man who had been mute spoke, and the crowd was amazed.(L) 15 But some of them said, “By Beelzebul,(M) the prince of demons, he is driving out demons.”(N) 16 Others tested him by asking for a sign from heaven.(O)

17 Jesus knew their thoughts(P) and said to them: “Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall. 18 If Satan(Q) is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? I say this because you claim that I drive out demons by Beelzebul. 19 Now if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your followers drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. 20 But if I drive out demons by the finger of God,(R) then the kingdom of God(S) has come upon you.

21 “When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are safe. 22 But when someone stronger attacks and overpowers him, he takes away the armor in which the man trusted and divides up his plunder.

23 “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.(T)

24 “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ 25 When it arrives, it finds the house swept clean and put in order. 26 Then it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first.”(U)

27 As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, “Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you.”(V)

28 He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God(W) and obey it.”(X)

The Sign of Jonah(Y)

29 As the crowds increased, Jesus said, “This is a wicked generation. It asks for a sign,(Z) but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.(AA) 30 For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation. 31 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the people of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom;(AB) and now something greater than Solomon is here. 32 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah;(AC) and now something greater than Jonah is here.

The Lamp of the Body(AD)

33 “No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light.(AE) 34 Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy,[g] your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy,[h] your body also is full of darkness. 35 See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. 36 Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you.”

Woes on the Pharisees and the Experts in the Law

37 When Jesus had finished speaking, a Pharisee invited him to eat with him; so he went in and reclined at the table.(AF) 38 But the Pharisee was surprised when he noticed that Jesus did not first wash before the meal.(AG)

39 Then the Lord(AH) said to him, “Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.(AI) 40 You foolish people!(AJ) Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also? 41 But now as for what is inside you—be generous to the poor,(AK) and everything will be clean for you.(AL)

42 “Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth(AM) of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God.(AN) You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone.(AO)

43 “Woe to you Pharisees, because you love the most important seats in the synagogues and respectful greetings in the marketplaces.(AP)

44 “Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves,(AQ) which people walk over without knowing it.”

45 One of the experts in the law(AR) answered him, “Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also.”

46 Jesus replied, “And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them.(AS)

47 “Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your ancestors who killed them. 48 So you testify that you approve of what your ancestors did; they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs.(AT) 49 Because of this, God in his wisdom(AU) said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.’(AV) 50 Therefore this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world, 51 from the blood of Abel(AW) to the blood of Zechariah,(AX) who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all.(AY)

52 “Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.”(AZ)

53 When Jesus went outside, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to oppose him fiercely and to besiege him with questions, 54 waiting to catch him in something he might say.(BA)

2 And he said to them, When ye pray, say ye, Father [Father ours], hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come to; thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.

3 Give to us to day our each day's bread.

4 And forgive to us our sins, as [and] we forgive to each man that oweth to us [as and we forgive to each owing to us]. And lead us not into temptation.

9 And I say to you, ask ye, and it shall be given to you; seek ye, and ye shall find; knock ye, and it shall be opened to you.

10 For each that asketh, taketh, and he that seeketh, findeth; and to a man that knocketh, it shall be opened.

11 Therefore who of you asketh his father bread, whether he shall give him a stone? or if he asketh fish, whether he shall give him a serpent for the fish?

12 or if he asketh an egg [or if he shall ask an egg], whether he shall areach him a scorpion?

13 Therefore if ye, when ye be evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more your Father of heaven shall give a good Spirit to men that ask him.

14 And Jesus was casting out a fiend [And he was casting out a fiend], and it was dumb. And when he had cast out the fiend, the dumb man spake; and the people wondered.

15 And some of them said, In Beelzebub, prince of devils, he casteth out devils.

16 And others tempting asked of him a token from heaven.

17 And as he saw the thoughts of them, he said to them, Every realm parted against itself, shall be desolate, and an house shall fall on an house.[a]

18 And if Satan be parted against himself, how shall his realm stand? For ye say, that I cast out fiends in Beelzebub.

19 And if I in Beelzebub cast out fiends, in whom cast out your sons [in whom your sons cast out]? Therefore they shall be your doomsmen.

20 But if I cast out fiends in the finger of God, then [soothly] the realm of God is come among you.

21 When a strong, armed man keepeth his house, all things that he wieldeth be in peace.

22 But if a stronger than he come upon him, and overcome him, he shall take away all his armour, in which he trusted, and shall deal abroad his robberies [and shall deal abroad his spoils, or robberies].

23 He that is not with me, is against me; and he that gathereth not together with me, scattereth abroad.

24 When an unclean spirit goeth out of a man, he wandereth by dry places, and seeketh rest [When an unclean spirit hath gone out of a man, he wandereth by dry places, seeking rest]; and he finding none, saith, I shall turn again into mine house, from whence I came out.

25 And when he cometh, he findeth it cleansed with besoms, and fair arrayed [and adorned].

26 Then he goeth, and taketh with him seven other spirits worse than himself, and they enter [in], and dwell there. And the last things of that man be made worse than the former.

27 And it was done, when he had said these things, a woman of the company raised [up] her voice, and said to him, Blessed be the womb that bare thee, and blessed be the teats that thou hast sucked.[b]

28 And he said, But yea blessed be they [And he said, Rather, blessed be they], that hear the word of God, and keep it.

29 And when the people ran together, he began to say, This generation is a wayward generation; it seeketh a token, and a token shall not be given to it, but the token of Jonas, the prophet.

30 For as Jonas was a token to men of Nineve, so man's Son shall be to this generation.

31 The queen of the south shall rise in doom with men of this generation, and shall condemn them; for she came from the ends of the earth, to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and lo! here is a greater than Solomon.

32 Men of Nineve shall rise in [the] doom with this generation, and shall condemn it; for they did penance in the preaching of Jonas [for they did penance at the preaching of Jonas], and lo! here is a greater than Jonas.

33 No man tendeth a lantern, and putteth it in huddles[c], neither under a bushel, but on a candlestick, that they that go in, see light.

34 The lantern of thy body is thine eye; if thine eye be simple, all thy body shall be light[-full]; but if it be wayward, all thy body shall be dark-full.

35 Therefore see thou, lest the light that is in thee [lest the light which is in thee], be darknesses.

36 Therefore if all thy body be bright, and have no part of darknesses, it shall be all bright, and as a lantern of brightness it shall give light to thee. [Therefore if all thy body shall be light-full, not having any part of darknesses, it shall be all light-full, and as a lantern of brightness, or shining, it shall give light to thee.]

37 And when he spake, a Pharisee prayed him [some Pharisee prayed], that he should eat with him. And he entered, and sat to meat [And he gone in, sat at the meat].

38 And the Pharisee began to say, guessing within himself, why he was not washed before [the] meat.

39 And the Lord said to him, Now ye Pharisees cleanse that that is withoutforth of the cup and the platter; but that thing that is within of you [but that thing of you that is within], is full of raven and wickedness.

40 Fools, whether he that made that that is withoutforth, made not also that that is within?

41 Nevertheless that that is over-plus [Nevertheless that thing that is over, or superfluous], give ye alms, and lo! all things be clean to you.

42 But woe to you, Pharisees, that tithe mint, and rue, and each herb, and leave doom and the charity of God [that tithe mint, and rue, and all wort, or herb, and pass doom and the charity of God]. For it behooved to do these things, and not to leave those.

43 Woe to you, Pharisees, that love the first chairs in synagogues, and salutations in market [and salutations in markets].

44 Woe to you, that be as sepulchres, that be not seen [which appear not], and men walking above know not.

45 But one of the wise men of the law answered, and said to him, Master, thou saying these things, also to us doest despite. [Forsooth one of the wise men of law answering, said to him, Master, thou saying these things, doest despite also to us.]

46 And he said, Also woe to you, wise men of [the] law, for ye charge men with burdens which they be not able to bear [for ye charge men with burdens which they may not bear], and ye yourselves with your one finger touch not the heavinesses.

47 Woe to you, that build tombs of prophets [Woe to you, that build burials, or tombs, of prophets]; and your fathers slew them.

48 Truly ye witness, that ye consent to the works of your fathers; for [soothly] they slew them, but ye build their sepulchres.

49 Therefore [and] the wisdom of God said, I shall send to them prophets and apostles, and of them they shall slay and pursue,

50 that the blood of all [the] prophets, that was shed from the making of the world [that was shed out from the beginning of the world], be sought of this generation;

51 from the blood of just Abel to the blood of Zacharias that was slain betwixt the altar and the house[d]. So I say to you, it shall be sought of this generation.

52 Woe to you, wise men of the law [wise men of law], for ye have taken away the key of knowing; and ye yourselves entered not [ye yourselves entered not in], and ye have forbidden them that entered.

53 And when he said these things to them, the Pharisees and wise men of the law [wise men of law] began grievously to against-stand [him], and [to] stop his mouth of many things,

54 ambushing him, and seeking to take something of his mouth, to accuse him [that they should accuse him].
