1 Alldenstund många andra hava företagit sig att om de händelser, som bland oss hava timat, avfatta berättelser,
2 i enlighet med vad som har blivit oss meddelat av dem som själva voro åsyna vittnen och ordets tjänare,
3 så har ock jag, sedan jag grundligt har efterforskat allt ända ifrån begynnelsen, beslutit mig för att i följd och ordning skriva därom till dig, ädle Teofilus,
4 så att du kan inse huru tillförlitliga de stycken äro, i vilka du har blivit undervisad.
5 På den tid då Herodes var konung över Judeen levde en präst vid namn Sakarias, av Abias' »dagsavdelning». Denne hade till hustru en av Arons döttrar som hette Elisabet.
6 De voro båda rättfärdiga inför Gud och vandrade ostraffligt efter alla Herrens bud och stadgar.
7 Men de hade inga barn, ty Elisabet var ofruktsam; och båda voro de komna till hög ålder.
8 Medan han nu en gång, när ordningen kom till hans avdelning, gjorde prästerlig tjänst inför Gud,
9 hände det sig, vid den övliga lottningen om de prästerliga sysslorna, att det tillföll honom att gå in i Herrens tempel och tända rökelsen.
10 Och hela menigheten stod utanför och bad, medan rökoffret förrättades.
11 Då visade sig för honom en Herrens ängel, stående på högra sidan om rökelsealtaret.
12 Och när Sakarias såg honom, blev han förskräckt, och fruktan föll över honom.
13 Men ängeln sade till honom: »Frukta icke, Sakarias; ty din bön är hörd, och din hustru Elisabet skall föda dig en son, och honom skall du giva namnet Johannes.
14 Och han skall bliva dig till glädje och fröjd, och många skola glädja sig över hans födelse.
15 Ty han skall bliva stor inför Herren. Vin och starka drycker skall han icke dricka, och redan i sin moders liv skall han bliva uppfylld av helig ande.
16 Och många av Israels barn skall han omvända till Herren, deras Gud.
17 Han skall gå framför honom i Elias' ande och kraft, för att 'vända fädernas hjärtan till barnen' och omvända de ohörsamma till de rättfärdigas sinnelag, så att han skaffar åt Herren ett välberett folk.»
18 Då sade Sakarias till ängeln: »Varav skall jag veta detta? Jag är ju själv gammal, och min hustru är kommen till hög ålder.»
19 Ängeln svarade och sade till honom: »Jag är Gabriel, som står inför Gud, och jag är utsänd för att tala till dig och förkunna dig detta glada budskap.
20 Och se, ända till den dag då detta sker skall du vara mållös och icke kunna tala, därför att du icke trodde mina ord, vilka dock i sin tid skola fullbordas.»
21 Och folket stod och väntade på Sakarias och förundrade sig över att han så länge dröjde i templet;
22 och när han kom ut, kunde han icke tala till dem. Då förstodo de att han hade sett någon syn i templet. Och han tecknade åt dem och förblev stum.
23 Och när tiden för hans tjänstgöring hade gått till ända, begav han sig hem.
24 Men efter den tiden blev hans hustru Elisabet havande och höll sig dold i fem månader;
25 och hon sade: »Så har Herren gjort med mig nu, då han har sett till min smälek bland människorna, för att borttaga den.»
26 I sjätte månaden blev ängeln Gabriel sänd av Gud till en stad i Galileen som hette Nasaret,
27 till en jungfru som var trolovad med en man vid namn Josef, av Davids hus; och jungfruns namn var Maria.
28 Och ängeln kom in till henne och sade: »Hell dig, du högtbenådade! Herren är med dig.»
29 Men hon blev mycket förskräckt vid hans ord och tänkte på vad denna hälsning månde innebära.
30 Då sade ängeln till henne: »Frukta icke, Maria; ty du har funnit nåd för Gud.
31 Se, du skall bliva havande och föda en son, och honom skall du giva namnet Jesus.
32 Han skall bliva stor och kallas den Högstes Son, och Herren Gud skall giva honom hans fader Davids tron.
33 Och han skall vara konung över Jakobs hus till evig tid, och på hans rike skall ingen ände vara.»
34 Då sade Maria till ängeln: »Huru skall detta ske? Jag vet ju icke av någon man.»
35 Ängeln svarade och sade till henne: »Helig ande skall komma över dig, och kraft från den Högste skall överskygga dig; därför skall ock det heliga som varder fött kallas Guds Son.
36 Och se, jämväl din fränka Elisabet har blivit havande och skall föda en son, nu på sin ålderdom; och detta är sjätte månaden för henne, som säges vara ofruktsam.
37 Ty för Gud kan intet vara omöjligt.»
38 Då sade Maria: »Se, jag är Herrens tjänarinna; ske mig såsom du har sagt.» Och ängeln lämnade henne.
39 En av de närmaste dagarna stod Maria upp och begav sig skyndsamt till en stad i Judeen, uppe i bergsbygden.
40 Och hon trädde in i Sakarias' hus och hälsade Elisabet.
41 När då Elisabet hörde Marias hälsning, spratt barnet till i hennes liv; och Elisabet blev fylld av helig ande
42 och brast ut och ropade högt och sade: »Välsignad vare du bland kvinnor, och välsignad din livsfrukt!
43 Men varför sker mig detta, att min Herres moder kommer till mig?
44 Se, när ljudet av din hälsning nådde mina öron, spratt barnet till av fröjd i mitt liv.
45 Och salig är du, som trodde att det skulle fullbordas, som blev dig sagt från Herren.»
46 Då sade Maria: »Min själ prisar storligen Herren,
47 och min ande fröjdar sig i Gud, min Frälsare.
48 Ty han har sett till sin tjänarinnas ringhet; och se, härefter skola alla släkten prisa mig salig.
49 Ty den Mäktige har gjort stora ting med mig, och heligt är hans namn.
50 Hans barmhärtighet varar från släkte till släkte över dem som frukta honom.
51 Han har utfört väldiga gärningar med sin arm, han har förskingrat dem som tänkte övermodiga tankar i sina hjärtan.
52 Härskare har han störtat från deras troner, och ringa män har han upphöjt;
53 hungriga har han mättat med sitt goda, och rika har han skickat bort med tomma händer.
54 Han har tagit sig an sin tjänare Israel och tänkt på att bevisa barmhärtighet
55 mot Abraham och mot hans säd till evig tid, efter sitt löfte till våra fäder.»
56 Och Maria stannade hos henne vid pass tre månader och vände därefter hem igen.
57 Så var nu för Elisabet tiden inne, då hon skulle föda; och hon födde en son.
58 Och när hennes grannar och fränder fingo höra att Herren hade bevisat henne så stor barmhärtighet, gladde de sig med henne.
59 Och på åttonde dagen kommo de för att omskära barnet; och de ville kalla honom Sakarias, efter hans fader.
60 Men hans moder tog till orda och sade: »Ingalunda; han skall heta Johannes.»
61 Då sade de till henne: »I din släkt finnes ju ingen som har det namnet.»
62 Och de frågade hans fader genom tecken vad han ville att barnet skulle heta.
63 Då begärde han en tavla och skrev dessa ord: »Johannes är hans namn.» Och alla förundrade sig.
64 Men i detsamma öppnades hans mun, och hans tunga löstes, och han talade och lovade Gud.
65 Och deras grannar betogos alla av häpnad, och ryktet om allt detta gick ut över Judeens hela bergsbygd.
66 Och alla som hörde det lade märke därtill och sade: »Vad månde väl varda av detta barn?» Också var ju Herrens hand med honom.
67 Och hans fader Sakarias blev uppfylld av helig ande och profeterade och sade:
68 »Lovad vare Herren, Israels Gud, som har sett till sitt folk och berett det förlossning,
69 och som har upprättat åt oss ett frälsningens horn i sin tjänare Davids hus,
70 såsom han hade lovat genom sin forntida heliga profeters mun.
71 Ty han ville frälsa oss från våra ovänner och ur alla våra motståndares hand,
72 och så göra barmhärtighet med våra fäder och tänka på sitt heliga förbund,
73 vad han med ed hade lovat för vår fader Abraham,
74 Han ville beskära oss att få tjäna honom utan fruktan, frälsta ur våra ovänners hand,
75 ja, att göra tjänst inför honom i helighet och rättfärdighet i alla våra dagar.
76 Och du, barn, skall bliva kallad den Högstes profet, ty du skall gå framför Herren och bereda vägar för honom,
77 till att giva hans folk kunskap om frälsning, i det att deras synder bliva dem förlåtna.
78 Så skall ske för vår Guds förbarmande kärleks skull, som skall låta ett ljus gå upp och skåda ned till oss från höjden,
79 för att 'skina över dem som sitta i mörker och dödsskugga' och så styra våra fötter in på fridens väg.»
80 Och barnet växte upp och blev allt starkare i anden. Och han vistades i öknen, intill den dag då han skulle träda fram för Israel.

Anledningen till Lukas berättelse
1-2 Käre Theofilos! Det har redan skrivits en hel del om Jesu liv, som bygger på de berättelser vi har från de första lärjungarna och andra ögonvittnen.
3 Men jag tycker att det skulle vara värdefullt att gå igenom allt detta ända från början. Efter en grundlig granskning skickar jag denna sammanfattning till dig,
4 för att du ska kunna känna dig säker på att alla de upplysningar du fått är tillförlitliga.
En ängel lovar Sakarias att Johannes ska födas
5 Berättelsen börjar med en judisk präst, Sakarias, som levde när Herodes var kung i Judeen. Sakarias tillhörde Avias avdelning av tempelprästerna. Både han och hans fru Elisabet hörde till Arons släkt, varifrån Israels präster kom.
6 Sakarias och Elisabet var gudfruktiga människor och noga med att följa alla Guds bud både till anda och bokstav.
7 Men de hade inga barn, för Elisabet kunde inte få några, och båda hade nu hunnit bli ganska gamla.
8-9 En dag, när Sakarias avdelning var i tjänst i templet, utföll den sedvanliga lottningen så att han fick uppdraget att gå in i den inre delen av templet och tända rökelsen inför Herren.
10 Under tiden stod många människor utanför på tempelgården och bad som de alltid gjorde under den del av gudstjänsten när man bar fram rökoffret.
11-12 Medan Sakarias var i helgedomen fick han plötsligt se en ängel som stod på altarets högra sida. Sakarias blev förskräckt och fruktansvärt rädd.
13 Men ängeln sa: Var inte rädd, Sakarias! Jag har kommit för att tala om för dig att Gud har hört dina böner. Din hustru Elisabet ska föda en son. Och du ska ge honom namnet Johannes.
14 Hans födelse ska göra er både glada och lyckliga, och många ska glädja sig med er.
15 Han ska bli en av Herrens stora tjänare. Han får aldrig smaka vin eller starka drycker, och han ska bli fylld med den helige Ande, redan innan han är född.
16 Han ska få många judar att vända om till Herren, deras Gud.
17 Han ska bli en man av samma kraftfulla natur och ande som profeten Elia, och han ska gå före Messias och förbereda människorna på hans ankomst. Han ska lära dem att älska Herren som deras förfäder gjorde och hjälpa dem bort från upproriskhetens väg till att göra Guds vilja.
18 Sakarias sa till ängeln: Men detta är omöjligt! Både Elisabet och jag är för gamla.
19 Då sa ängeln: Jag är Gabriel! Jag står vid Guds tron som hans tjänare. Det är han som har sänt mig till dig med denna glada nyhet.
20 Men eftersom du inte trodde mig, ska du nu bli stum och inte kunna tala förrän barnet är fött. För mina ord ska visa sig vara sanna när tiden är inne.
21 Under tiden väntade folket utanför på att Sakarias skulle komma ut, och man undrade varför han dröjde så länge därinne.
22 När han till slut kom, kunde han inte tala till dem, men de förstod av hans gester att han måste ha sett en syn.
23 Sakarias stannade kvar i templet under resten av sin tjänstgöringsperiod och återvände sedan hem.
24 En kort tid därefter blev hans hustru Elisabet med barn och höll sig undan i fem månader.
25 Tänk vad god Gud är, jublade hon. Han har befriat mig från skammen att vara barnlös.
En ängel lovar Maria att Jesus ska födas
26 Månaden därpå sände Gud ängeln Gabriel till en ung flicka i staden Nasaret i Galileen.
27 Hon hette Maria och var förlovad med en man som hette Josef och hörde till kung Davids släkt.
28 Gabriel visade sig för henne och sa: Jag hälsar dig, du utvalda kvinna! Herren är med dig!
29 Maria blev både överraskad och rädd och förstod inte vad ängeln menade.
30 Var inte rädd, Maria, sa ängeln. Gud ska välsigna dig på ett underbart sätt!
31 Du ska snart bli med barn och föda en son som ska få namnet Jesus.
32 Han kommer att bli en mycket stor man och ska kallas Guds Son. Och Herren Gud kommer att ge honom hans förfader Davids tron.
33 Han ska härska över Israel för evigt, och det ska aldrig bli något slut på hans rike.
34 Maria frågade ängeln: Men hur kan jag få barn? Jag har inte varit tillsammans med någon man.
35 Ängeln svarade: Den helige Ande ska komma över dig, och Guds kraft ska omsluta dig. Därför ska det barn du föder vara heligt, och kallas Guds Son.
36 Din släkting Elisabet väntar också barn trots sin ålder. Hon, som man har kallat 'den barnlösa
37 För Gud håller alla sina löften!
38 Maria sa: Jag är Herrens tjänarinna. Jag vill göra som han önskar, så att hans plan kan bli verklighet. Sedan försvann ängeln.
Maria besöker Elisabet
39-40 Några dagar senare skyndade sig Maria upp till den stad i Judeens berg där Sakarias bodde för att hälsa på Elisabet.
41 När Elisabet hörde Marias hälsningsord sparkade barnet till i henne av glädje, och hon blev fylld av helig Ande.
42 Hon blev så glad att hon ropade högt till Maria: Gud har utvalt dig framför alla andra kvinnor, och ditt barn är förutbestämt för Guds särskilda välsignelse.
43 Vilken ära för mig att min Herres mor kommer på besök.
44 I samma ögonblick som du kom in och hälsade på mig och jag hörde din röst, gick det som en stöt av glädje genom barnet i mig!
45 Du trodde att Gud skulle göra vad han har sagt, och därför har han gett dig denna underbara välsignelse.
46 Maria svarade:O, jag vill lovprisa Herren!
47 Jag jublar i Gud, min Frälsare!
48 Han har tagit sig an mig - en oansenlig kvinna, och nu kommer människor i alla tider att kalla mig välsignad av Gud.
49 Han, den helige och mäktige, har gjort något stort med mig.
50 Hans nåd varar från generation till generation över alla som erkänner honom som Herre.
51 Hans väldiga arm är full av kraft! De stolta och högfärdiga slår han ner.
52 Furstar fördriver han från deras troner, men de ödmjuka upphöjer han.
53 Han mättar de hungriga med sina gåvor, men de rika driver han bort med tomma händer.
54 Tänk på hur han hjälper sitt Israel! Han glömmer inte sitt löfte att vara barmhärtig.
55 Han lovade ju våra fäder, Abraham och hans barn, att alltid visa nåd mot dem.
56 Maria stannade hos Elisabet i omkring tre månader och återvände sedan hem.
Johannes döparens födelse
57 Elisabets väntan var nu slut, och det var dags för henne att föda. Och hon födde en pojke.
58 Nyheten om hur god Gud hade varit mot henne spred sig snabbt bland grannar och släktingar, och alla blev glada.
59 När pojken var åtta dagar gammal samlades alla släktingar och vänner för att vara med vid omskärelsen. Alla trodde att pojken skulle heta Sakarias efter sin far.
60 Men Elisabet sa: Nej, han ska heta Johannes.
61 Varför det? frågade de. Det finns ju ingen i hela släkten som heter så.
62 Och de vände sig till pojkens far och försökte tala till honom med hjälp av teckenspråk.
63 Han bad då om något att skriva på och till allas förvåning skrev han: Han ska heta Johannes.
64 I samma ögonblick kunde Sakarias tala igen, och han började lovprisa Gud.
65 Alla tyckte detta var mycket märkligt, och nyheten om vad som hänt spreds i hela det judeiska bergslandet.
66 Alla som hörde det tänkte på det och frågade sig: Vad ska det bli av detta barn? Herrens hand är verkligen med honom på ett särskilt sätt.
67 Men hans far Sakarias blev fylld av den helige Ande och profeterade:
68 Lovprisa Herren, Israels Gud, för han kommer till sitt folk och befriar det.
69 Från sin tjänare Davids kungliga släkt sänder han oss en mäktig Frälsare,
70 alldeles som han lovat genom sina heliga profeter för länge sedan -
71 en som kan rädda oss från våra fiender, ja, från alla som hatar oss.
72-73 Han har varit barmhärtig mot våra förfäder, och kommer också ihåg sitt heliga löfte till Abraham:
74 att vi ska bli befriade från våra fiender och få tjäna Gud utan rädsla.
75 Vi ska få vara heliga och rättfärdiga inför honom för evigt.
76 Och du, min lille son, ska kallas den store Gudens profet, för du ska bana väg för Messias.
77 Du ska visa hans folk vägen till frälsning genom syndernas förlåtelse.
78-79 Allt detta ska ske på grund av Guds kärleksfulla omsorg om oss. Han ska komma ner till oss från höjden, och bli ett ljus för alla som lever i mörker och dödsfruktan och leda oss på fridens väg.
80 Den lille Johannes älskade Gud över allting. När han blivit vuxen bodde han ute i öknen, ända till den dag han började sin offentliga verksamhet i Israel.

Chapter 1
1 Since many different individuals have undertaken the task to set down an account of the events that have been fulfilled among us, 2 in accordance with their transmission to us by those who were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word from the beginning, 3 I too, after researching all the evidence anew with great care, have decided to write an orderly account for you, Theophilus, who are so greatly revered, 4 so that you may learn the unquestioned authenticity of the teachings you have received.
The Infancy Narrative[b]
Announcement of the Birth of John.[c] At the time of the reign of King Herod of Judea,[d] there was a priest named Zechariah, a member of the priestly order of Abijah. His wife Elizabeth was a descendant of Aaron. 6 Both of them were righteous in the eyes of God, observing blamelessly all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord. 7 But they had no children, because Elizabeth was barren and both were advanced in years.8 On one occasion, when his division was on duty and he was exercising his priestly office before God, 9 he was designated by lot to enter the sanctuary of the Lord and offer incense.[e] 10 At the hour of the offering of incense, all the people were outside, praying. 11 Then there appeared to him the angel of the Lord, standing to the right of the altar of incense.
12 When Zechariah beheld him, he was terrified and overcome with fear. 13 But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah, for your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear for you a son, and you shall name him John. 14 He will be a source of joy and delight to you, and many will rejoice at his birth, 15 for he will be great in the sight of the Lord.
“He will never imbibe wine or any strong drink. Even when he is still in his mother’s womb, he will be filled with the Holy Spirit, 16 and he will bring back many of the people of Israel to the Lord their God. 17 With the spirit and power of Elijah he will go before him, to reconcile fathers with their children and to convert the disobedient to the ways of the righteous, so that a prepared people might be made ready for the Lord.”
18 Zechariah said to the angel, “How can I be assured of this? For I am an old man and my wife is well past the stage of giving birth.” 19 The angel replied, “I am Gabriel. I stand in the presence of God, and I have been sent to speak to you and to convey to you this good news. 20 But now, because you did not believe my words, which will be fulfilled at their appointed time, you will lose your power of speech and will become mute until the day that these things take place.”
21 Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and were surprised that he was delaying so long in the sanctuary. 22 When he did emerge, he could not speak to them, and they realized that he had seen a vision while he was in the sanctuary. He was only able to make signs to them, but he remained unable to speak.
23 When his term of service was completed, he returned home. 24 Shortly thereafter his wife Elizabeth conceived, and she remained in seclusion for five months, saying, 25 “The Lord has granted me this blessing, looking favorably upon me and removing from me the humiliation I have endured among my people.”[f]
26 Announcement of the Birth of Jesus.[g] In the sixth month,[h] the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a town in Galilee called Nazareth, 27 to a virgin[i] betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name was Mary.
28 The angel came to her and said, “Hail, full of grace![j] The Lord is with you.” 29 But she was greatly troubled by his words and wondered in her heart what this salutation could mean.
30 Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his ancestor David. 33 He will rule over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
34 Mary said to the angel, “How will this be, since I am a virgin?”[k] 35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, the child to be born will be holy, and he will be called the Son of God. 36 [l]And behold, your cousin Elizabeth in her old age has also conceived a son, and she who was called barren is now in her sixth month, 37 for nothing will be impossible for God.”
38 Then Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord. Let it be done to me according to your word.” After this, the angel departed from her.
39 Mary Visits Elizabeth.[m] In those days, Mary set out and journeyed in haste into the hill country to a town of Judah[n] 40 where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb.
Then Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit, 42 and she exclaimed with a loud cry, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. 43 And why am I so greatly favored that the mother of my Lord should visit me? 44 For behold, the moment that the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the child in my womb leaped for joy. 45 And blessed is she who believed that what the Lord has said to her will be fulfilled.”
46 The Canticle of Mary.[o] And Mary said:
“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord
47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior.
48 For he has looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant;
henceforth all generations will call me blessed.
49 The Mighty One has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.
50 His mercy is shown from age to age
to those who fear him.
51 He has shown the strength of his arm,
he has routed those who are arrogant in the desires of their hearts.
52 He has brought down the mighty from their thrones
and lifted up the lowly.
53 He has filled the hungry with good things
and sent the rich away empty.
54 He has come to the aid of Israel his servant,
ever mindful of his merciful love,
55 according to the promises he made to our ancestors,
to Abraham and to his descendants forever.”
56 Mary remained with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned to her home.
57 The Birth of John. When the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, she bore a son. 58 Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great mercy to her, and they shared in her rejoicing.
59 On the eighth day, when they came to circumcise the child, they were going to name him Zechariah after his father. 60 However, his mother objected. “No,” she said. “He is to be called John.” 61 They said to her, “There is no one in your family who has this name.” 62 They then made signs to his father to ask what name he wanted to be given to the child. 63 He asked for a writing tablet, and he wrote: “His name is John.” They were all filled with wonder.
64 Immediately, his mouth was opened and his tongue was freed, and he began to speak, giving praise to God. 65 All their neighbors were overcome with awe, and all these things were related throughout the entire hill country of Judea. 66 All who heard them were deeply impressed, and they wondered, “What then is this child going to be?” For the hand of the Lord was with him.
67 The Canticle of Zechariah.[p] Then the child’s father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied:
68 “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel,
for he has visited his people and redeemed them.
69 He has raised up a horn of salvation for us
from the house of his servant David,
70 just as he proclaimed through the mouth of his holy prophets from age to age:
71 salvation from our enemies and from the hands of all who hate us,
72 to show the mercy promised to our fathers
and to remain mindful of his holy covenant,
73 the oath that he swore to our father Abraham,
and to grant us that, 74 delivered from the power of our enemies,
without fear we might worship him 75 in holiness and righteousness
in his presence all our days.
76 “And you, my child, will be called prophet of the Most High,
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,
77 to give his people knowledge of salvation
through the forgiveness of their sins,
78 because of the tender mercy of our God
by which the dawn from on high will break upon us

80 The Son of the Wilderness. The child grew and became strong in spirit. He lived in the wilderness until the day he appeared publicly to Israel.

- Luke 1:1 Like the Greek historians of his time, Luke begins his book with a prologue. He dedicates the work to a distinguished person, Theophilus (otherwise unknown to us), who has already been taught the good news. Some scholars believe that the name is symbolic for it means “lover of God,” hence all Christians.
- Luke 1:5 The Gospel is first and foremost a proclamation of what Jesus did and taught and, above all, of his Death and Resurrection for the salvation of humankind; everything that the preachers of the mission and message of Jesus proclaimed led toward the mystery of Easter. But, like Matthew, Luke decided to preface all that with a description of the period preceding the public appearance of Jesus, because the Church wanted to know the mystery of Jesus back to its very beginnings.

The events described by Matthew, however, are not focused on the birth, which is recounted for us through the experiences of Joseph; Luke speaks directly of the birth through the experience of Mary. Regarding Mary, the opening pages of the third Gospel have provided the Church down the centuries with an abundant, and still flowing, wellspring for its faith (Marian teachings), its devotion (the “Hail, Mary”), and its art. Some points emerge with utter clarity: Mary is the Mother of Jesus; the birth took place at Bethlehem; and the newborn child was placed in a manger. The primary statement made is undoubtedly this: that Jesus was born not by the will of human beings but by the initiative of God, and that he was born of a virgin mother. - Luke 1:5 The time is toward the end of the reign of Herod the Great (37–4 B.C.). A faithful and devout couple have been praying for the salvation of the people (v. 13). The husband belonged to the eighth class of priests (1 Chr 24:10) and had the joy of entering every so often into the sanctuary. In the midst of the service, an angel—Gabriel, the messenger of the time of salvation (Dan 9:21-27)—appears to him and tells him of an unexpected birth. Like Isaac (Gen 21:2), Samson (Jdg 13:3-7), and Samuel (1 Sam 1), this child will be the result of a miracle, and, even before his birth, he is destined for the service of God; he will live as an ascetic, a “Nazirite” (see Num 6:3-4; Jdg 13:4-5); he will be the mysterious forerunner of the last times, the new Elijah whom the people expected in accordance with an old tradition (Mal 3:23-24). His name will be John, which means: “The Lord is gracious.”
- Luke 1:5 Judea: meant here is the entire territory of Palestine.
- Luke 1:9 Incense was offered in the Holy Place, the room in front of the Holy of Holies or innermost part of the temple. The rite of incense was performed morning and evening at the time of sacrifice.
- Luke 1:25 The humiliation I have endured among my people: lack of children deprived the parents of personal happiness but also brought about social reproach (see Gen 16:2—Sarai; 25:21—Rebekah; 30:23—Rachel; 1 Sam 1:1-18—Hannah; see also Lev 20:20-21; Ps 128:3; Jer 22:30).
- Luke 1:26 Mary, a young girl, is betrothed, despite the fact that she has the unusual intention of remaining a virgin; “betrothed”: that is, according to the custom of the time, she was legally married but did not yet live with her husband. Confronted with this surprising message, she gives no sign of fear or doubt: she reflects, meditates, believes. This woman has the “grace,” that is, the favor of God; she is greeted as if Messianic joy were being proclaimed to the Daughter of Zion, the new Jerusalem (see Zep 3:14; Zec 9:9).
The Bible has often spoken of promised sons; but this Jesus is the very Messiah of Israel, according to the mysterious prophecy of Isaiah on which Israel constantly and hopefully meditated (vv. 32-33; see Isa 7:14; 9:6); he is even far more: the Son of God (v. 35). The body of Jesus was to take form in the flesh of Mary, and this was to come about not through human planning but through the presence and action of God himself (see Ex 40:34-35; Num 9:15; 10:34), of the Spirit who creates and gives life (Gen 1:2; Ps 104:30; Isa 11:1-6). - Luke 1:26 In the sixth month: i.e., after the time of John’s conception.
- Luke 1:27 Virgin: i.e., one who had not yet had sexual relations. Mary’s question in v. 34 and the reference in v. 27 that she was “betrothed” (pledged to be married) clearly make this point. Mary had just entered her teens, for betrothal usually took place after puberty, but intercourse was not allowed until marriage. The betrothal could be severed only by divorce or death.
- Luke 1:28 Hail, full of grace: this phrase may also be translated as “Hail, O highly favored one.” The Lord is with you: other ancient manuscripts add: “Blessed are you among women” (as in Lk 1:42).
- Luke 1:34 I am a virgin: literally, “I do not know man,” “know” referring to the conjugal relationship.
- Luke 1:36 In confirmation of what the angel has said to her, Mary is given word of the pregnancy of her aged relative Elizabeth. God has effected a pregnancy for a woman past childbearing years. Thus, he can effect a pregnancy for Mary also, because nothing is impossible for him.
- Luke 1:39 By the account of the Visitation, Luke establishes the connection between the traditions about John and those about Jesus. At first commonplace, this meeting of two expectant mothers goes beyond the ordinary. As conscious believers, enlightened by the Holy Spirit, they understand that the time of salvation is inaugurated by the young lives they bear within themselves. We are already made aware that John bears witness to Jesus. And the first Christian generations place on the lips of Elizabeth the praise of Mary the believer.
- Luke 1:39 A town of Judah: according to tradition, this was Ain Karim, 100 miles south of Nazareth and four miles west of Jerusalem.
- Luke 1:46 Mary’s splendid canticle, the Magnificat, proclaims a new course for history, the end of injustice, and the birth of a new world, that of the kingdom, in which everything is different from our habitual experience. Every people gives thanks to God; the joy of the poor bursts forth; hope is born for the salvation of the despised of this world.
The Magnificat, which is very similar to the canticle of Hannah (see 1 Sam 2:1-10) and has become the Christian song of thanksgiving, lends itself to be the prayer of those who have suffered but have never lost their hope in God. The entire prayer of the Old Testament converges upon this one, but with a wholly renewed power; it is easy to see why the Church never tires of reciting it. It is one of the gems of the Church’s daily office of Evening Prayer (Vespers). - Luke 1:67 The hour of light has come, and the Messiah is the star that rises (v. 78; see Num 24:17; Isa 60:1; Mal 3:20) or, again, the branch that springs from David (Jer 23:5; 33:15; Zec 3:8; 6:12). The Canticle of Zechariah, the Benedictus, rings out daily in the liturgical office of Morning Prayer (Lauds). The whole faith of the Old Testament is woven into its proclamation of peace, that is, fulfillment and joy for humanity, as a gift from God.

The Birth of John the Baptist Foretold
5 In the time of Herod king of Judea(I) there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah;(J) his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron. 6 Both of them were righteous in the sight of God, observing all the Lord’s commands and decrees blamelessly.(K) 7 But they were childless because Elizabeth was not able to conceive, and they were both very old.
8 Once when Zechariah’s division was on duty and he was serving as priest before God,(L) 9 he was chosen by lot,(M) according to the custom of the priesthood, to go into the temple of the Lord and burn incense.(N) 10 And when the time for the burning of incense came, all the assembled worshipers were praying outside.(O)

21 Meanwhile, the people were waiting for Zechariah and wondering why he stayed so long in the temple. 22 When he came out, he could not speak to them. They realized he had seen a vision in the temple, for he kept making signs(AG) to them but remained unable to speak.
23 When his time of service was completed, he returned home. 24 After this his wife Elizabeth became pregnant and for five months remained in seclusion. 25 “The Lord has done this for me,” she said. “In these days he has shown his favor and taken away my disgrace(AH) among the people.”
The Birth of Jesus Foretold
26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel(AI) to Nazareth,(AJ) a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph,(AK) a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”
29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid,(AL) Mary; you have found favor with God.(AM) 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.(AN) 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High.(AO) The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David,(AP) 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom(AQ) will never end.”(AR)
34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”
35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you,(AS) and the power of the Most High(AT) will overshadow you. Mary Visits Elizabeth
39 At that time Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea,(AY) 40 where she entered Zechariah’s home and greeted Elizabeth. 41 When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.(AZ) 42 In a loud voice she exclaimed: “Blessed are you among women,(BA) and blessed is the child you will bear! 43 But why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord(BB) should come to me? 44 As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy. 45 Blessed is she who has believed that the Lord would fulfill his promises to her!”

The Birth of John the Baptist
57 When it was time for Elizabeth to have her baby, she gave birth to a son. 58 Her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown her great mercy, and they shared her joy.
59 On the eighth day they came to circumcise(BQ) the child, and they were going to name him after his father Zechariah, 60 but his mother spoke up and said, “No! He is to be called John.”(BR)
61 They said to her, “There is no one among your relatives who has that name.”
62 Then they made signs(BS) to his father, to find out what he would like to name the child. 63 He asked for a writing tablet, and to everyone’s astonishment he wrote, “His name is John.”(BT) 64 Immediately his mouth was opened and his tongue set free, and he began to speak,(BU) praising God. 65 All the neighbors were filled with awe, and throughout the hill country of Judea(BV) people were talking about all these things. 66 Everyone who heard this wondered about it, asking, “What then is this child going to be?” For the Lord’s hand was with him.(BW)
