11  És lõn, mikor õ imádkozék egy helyen, minekutána elvégezte, monda néki egy az õ tanítványai közül: Uram, taníts minket imádkozni, miképen János is tanította az õ tanítványait.

Monda pedig nékik: Mikor imádkoztok, [ezt] mondjátok: Mi Atyánk, ki vagy a mennyekben, szenteltessék meg a te neved. Jõjjön el a te országod. Legyen meg a te akaratod, miképen a mennyben, azonképen e földön is.

A mi mindennapi kenyerünket add meg nékünk naponként.

És bocsásd meg nékünk a mi bûneinket; mert mi is megbocsátunk mindeneknek, a kik nékünk adósok. És ne vígy minket kisértetbe; de szabadíts meg minket a gonosztól.

És monda nékik: Ki az közületek, a kinek barátja van, és ahhoz megy éjfélkor, és ezt mondja néki: Barátom, adj nékem kölcsön három kenyeret,

Mert az én barátom én hozzám jött az útról, és nincs mit adjak ennie;

Az pedig onnét belõlrõl felelvén, ezt mondaná: Ne bánts engem: immár az ajtó be van zárva, és az én gyermekeim velem vannak az ágyban; nem kelhetek fel, és nem adhatok néked?

Mondom néktek, ha azért nem fog is felkelni és adni néki, mert az barátja, de annak tolakodása miatt felkél és ád néki, a mennyi kell.

Én is mondom néktek: Kérjetek és megadatik néktek; keressetek és találtok; zörgessetek és megnyittatik néktek.

10 Mert a ki kér, mind kap; és a ki keres, talál; és a zörgetõnek megnyittatik.

11 Melyik atya pedig az közületek, a kitõl a fia kenyeret kér, [és] õ talán követ ád néki? vagy ha halat, vajjon a hal helyett kígyót ád-é néki?

12 Avagy ha tojást kér, vajjon skorpiót ád-é néki?

13 Ha azért ti gonosz létetekre tudtok a ti fiaitoknak jó ajándékokat adni, mennyivel inkább ád a ti mennyei Atyátok Szent Lelket azoknak, a kik tõle kérik.

14 És ördögöt ûz vala ki, mely néma vala. És lõn, mikor kiment az ördög, megszólala a néma; és csodálkozék a sokaság.

15 Némelyek pedig azok közül mondának: A Belzebúb által, az ördögök fejedelme által ûzi ki az ördögöket.

16 Mások meg, kísértvén õt, mennyei jelt kívánának tõle.

17 Õ pedig tudván azoknak gondolatát, monda nékik: Minden ország, a mely magával meghasonlik, elpusztul; és ház a házzal ha [meghasonlik,] leomlik.

18 És a Sátán is ha õ magával meghasonlik, mimódon állhat meg az õ országa? mert azt mondjátok, hogy én a Belzebúb által ûzöm ki az ördögöket.

19 És ha én a Belzebúb által ûzöm ki az ördögöket, a ti fiaitok ki által ûzik ki? Annakokáért õk maguk lesznek a ti bíráitok.

20 Ha pedig Isten ujjával ûzöm ki az ördögöket, kétség nélkül elérkezett hozzátok az Isten országa.

21 Mikor az erõs fegyveres õrzi az õ palotáját, a mije van, békességben van;

22 De mikor a nálánál erõsebb reá jövén legyõzi õt, minden fegyverét elveszi, melyhez bízott, és a mit tõle zsákmányol, elosztja.

23 A ki velem nincs, ellenem van; és a ki velem nem takar, tékozol.

24 Mikor a tisztátalan lélek kimegy az emberbõl, víz nélkül való helyeken jár, nyugalmat keresvén; és mikor nem talál, [ezt] mondja: Visszatérek az én házamba, a honnét kijöttem.

25 És [oda] menvén, kisöpörve és felékesítve találja azt.

26 Akkor elmegy, és maga mellé vesz más hét lelket, magánál gonoszabbakat, és bemenvén ott lakoznak; és annak az embernek utolsó állapota gonoszabb lesz az elsõnél.

27 Lõn pedig mikor ezeket mondá, fölemelvén szavát egy asszony a sokaság közül, monda néki: Boldog méh, a mely téged hordozott, és az emlõk, melyeket szoptál.

28 Õ pedig monda: Sõt inkább boldogok a kik hallgatják az Istennek beszédét, és megtartják azt.

29 Mikor pedig a sokaság hozzá gyülekezék, kezdé mondani: E nemzetség gonosz: jelt kíván, de jel nem adatik néki, hanem ha Jónás prófétának ama jele;

30 Mert miképen Jónás jelül volt a Ninivebelieknek, azonképen lesz az embernek Fia is e nemzetségnek.

31 A Délnek királynéasszonya felkél majd az ítéletkor e nemzetség férfiaival, és kárhoztatja õket: mert õ eljött a földnek szélérõl, hogy hallhassa a Salamon bölcseségét; és ímé nagyobb van itt Salamonnál.

32 Ninive férfiai az ítéletkor együtt támadnak majd fel e nemzetséggel, és kárhoztatják ezt: mivelhogy õk megtértek a Jónás prédikálására; és ímé nagyobb van itt Jónásnál.

33 Senki pedig, ha gyertyát gyújt, nem teszi rejtekbe, sem a véka alá, hanem a gyertyatartóba, hogy a kik bemennek, lássák a világosságot.

34 A testnek lámpása a szem: ha azért a te szemed õszinte, a te egész tested is világos lesz; ha pedig [a] [te szemed] gonosz, a te tested is sötét.

35 Meglásd azért, hogy a világosság, mely te benned van, sötétség ne legyen.

36 Annakokáért ha a te egész tested világos, és semmi részében sincs homályosság, olyan világos lesz egészen, mint mikor a lámpás megvilágosít téged az õ világosságával.

37 Beszéd közben pedig kéré õt egy farizeus, hogy ebédeljen nála. Bemenvén azért, leüle enni.

38 A farizeus pedig mikor [ezt] látta, elcsodálkozék, hogy ebéd elõtt elõbb nem mosdott meg.

39 Monda pedig az Úr néki: Ti farizeusok jóllehet a pohárnak és tálnak külsõ részét megtisztítjátok; de a belsõtök rakva ragadománynyal és gonoszsággal.

40 Bolondok, a ki azt teremtette, a mi kívül van, nem ugyanaz teremtette-é azt is, a mi belõl van?

41 Csak adjátok alamizsnául a mi benne van; és minden tiszta lesz néktek.

42 De jaj néktek farizeusok! mert megadjátok a dézsmát a mentától, rutától és minden paréjtól, de hátra hagyjátok az ítéletet és az Isten szeretetét: pedig ezeket kellene cselekedni, és amazokat sem elhagyni.

43 Jaj néktek farizeusok! mert szeretitek az elõlülést a gyülekezetekben, és a piaczokon való köszöntéseket.

44 Jaj néktek képmutató írástudók és farizeusok! mert olyanok vagytok, mint a sírok, a melyek nem látszanak, és az emberek, a kik azokon járnak, nem tudják.

45 Felelvén pedig egy a törvénytudók közül, monda néki: Mester, mikor ezeket mondod, minket is bántasz.

46 Õ pedig monda: Jaj néktek is törvénytudók! mert elhordozhatatlan terhekkel terhelitek meg az embereket, de ti magatok egy ujjotokkal sem illetitek azokat a terheket.

47 Jaj néktek! mert ti építitek a próféták sírjait; a ti atyáitok pedig megölték õket.

48 Tehát bizonyságot tesztek és jóvá hagyjátok atyáitok cselekedeteit; mert azok megölték õket, ti pedig építitek sírjaikat.

49 Ezért mondta az Isten bölcsesége is: Küldök õ hozzájuk prófétákat és apostolokat; és azok közül [némelyeket] megölnek, és [némelyeket] elüldöznek;

50 Hogy számon kéressék e nemzetségtõl minden próféták vére, mely e világ fundamentomának felvettetésétõl fogva kiontatott,

51 Az Ábel vérétõl fogva mind a Zakariás véréig, ki elveszett az oltár és a templom között: bizony, mondom néktek, számon kéretik e nemzetségtõl.

52 Jaj néktek törvénytudók! mert elvettétek a tudománynak kulcsát: ti magatok nem mentetek be, és a kik be akartak menni, azokat meggátoltátok.

53 Mikor pedig ezeket mondá nékik, az írástudók és farizeusok kezdének felette igen ellene állani és õt sok dolog felõl kikérdezgetni,

54 Ólálkodván õ utána, és igyekezvén valamit az õ szájából kikapni, hogy vádolhassák õt.

Instruction about Prayer

11 It happened that while Jesus was praying in a certain place, after He finished, one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray just as John also taught his disciples.” He said to them,

“When you pray, [a]say:
[b]Father, [c]hallowed be Your name.
[d]Your kingdom come.

‘Give us each day our [e]daily bread.

‘And forgive us our sins,
For we ourselves also forgive everyone who is indebted to us [who has offended or wronged us].
And [f]lead us not into temptation [[g]but rescue us from evil].’”

Parable of Persistence

Then He said to them, “Suppose one of you has a friend, and goes to him at midnight and says, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves [of bread]; for a friend of mine who is on a journey has just come to visit me, and I have nothing to serve him’; and from inside he answers, ‘Do not bother me; the door has already been shut and my children and I are in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything.’ I tell you, even though he will not get up and give him anything just because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence and boldness he will get up and give him whatever he needs.

“So I say to you, ask and keep on asking, and it will be given to you; seek and keep on seeking, and you will find; knock and keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.(A) 10 For everyone who [h]keeps on asking [persistently], receives; and he who keeps on seeking [persistently], finds; and to him who keeps on knocking [persistently], the door will be opened. 11 What father among you, if his son asks for a fish, will give him a snake instead of a fish? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you, then, being evil [that is, sinful by nature], know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask and continue to ask Him!”

Pharisees’ Blasphemy

14 And [at another time] Jesus was casting out a demon, and it was [controlling a man so as to make him] mute; when the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke. And the crowds were awed.(B) 15 But some of them said, “He drives out demons by [the power of] [i]Beelzebul (Satan), the ruler of the demons.” 16 Others, trying to test Him, were demanding of Him a sign from heaven. 17 But He, well aware of their thoughts and purpose, said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is doomed to destruction; and a house divided against itself falls. 18 If Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand and continue to survive? For you are saying that I drive out demons by [the power of] Beelzebul. 19 Now if I drive out the demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons [the Jewish exorcists] drive them out? For this reason they will be your judges. 20 But if I drive out the demons by the finger of God, then [j]the kingdom of God has already come upon you. 21 When the strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his belongings are undisturbed and secure. 22 But when someone stronger than he attacks and overpowers him, he robs him of all his armor on which he had relied and divides his [goods as] spoil. 23 He who is not with Me [believing in Me as Lord and Savior] is against Me [there is no impartial position]; and he who does not gather with Me [assisting in My ministry], scatters.

24 “When the unclean spirit comes out of a person, it roams through waterless places in search [of a place] of rest; and not finding any, it says, ‘I will go back to my house (person) from which I came.’ 25 And when it comes, it finds the place swept and put in order. 26 Then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they go in [the person] and live there; and the last state of that person becomes worse than the first.”

27 Now while Jesus was saying these things, one of the women in the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, “Blessed (happy, favored by God) is the womb that gave birth to You and the breasts at which You nursed!” 28 But He said, “On the contrary, blessed (happy, favored by God) are those who hear the word of God and continually observe it.”

The Sign of Jonah

29 Now as the crowds were increasing [in number], He began to say, “This [present] generation is a wicked generation; it seeks a sign (attesting miracle), but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah [the prophet].(C) 30 For just as [k]Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man also be [a sign] to this generation.(D) 31 The Queen of the South (the kingdom of Sheba) will rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to listen to the wisdom of Solomon, and look, something greater than Solomon is here.(E) 32 The men of Nineveh will stand up [as witnesses] at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and look, something greater than Jonah is here.(F)

33 “No one lights a lamp and then puts it in a cellar nor under a basket [hiding the light], but [instead it is put] on the lampstand, so that those who come in may see the light.(G) 34 The eye is the lamp of your body. When your eye is clear [spiritually perceptive, focused on God], your whole body also is full of light [benefiting from God’s precepts]. But when it is bad [spiritually blind], your body also is full of darkness [devoid of God’s word]. 35 Be careful, therefore, that the light that is in you is not darkness. 36 So if your whole body is illuminated, with no dark part, it will be entirely bright [with light], as when the lamp gives you light with its bright rays.”

Woes upon the Pharisees

37 Now after Jesus had spoken, a Pharisee asked Him to have lunch with him. He went in [the Pharisee’s home] and reclined at the table [without ceremonially washing His hands]. 38 The Pharisee noticed this and was surprised that Jesus did not first ceremonially wash before the meal. 39 But the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and plate [as required by tradition]; but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. 40 You foolish ones [acting without reflection or intelligence]! Did not He who made the outside make the inside also? 41 But give that which is within as charity [that is, acts of mercy and compassion, not as a public display, but as an expression of your faithfulness to God], and then indeed all things are clean for you.

42 “But woe (judgment is coming) to you Pharisees, because you [self-righteously] [l]tithe mint and [m]rue and every [little] garden herb [tending to all the minutiae], and yet disregard and neglect justice and the love of God; but these are the things you should have done, without neglecting the others.(H) 43 Woe to you Pharisees, because you love the [n]best seats in the synagogues and to be respectfully greeted in the market places. 44 Woe to you! For you are like graves which are unmarked, and people walk over them without being aware of it [and are ceremonially unclean].”

45 One of the lawyers [an expert in the Mosaic Law] answered Him, “Teacher, by saying this, You insult us too!” 46 But He said, “Woe to you lawyers as well, because you weigh men down with burdens [man-made rules, unreasonable requirements] which are hard to bear, and you yourselves will not even touch the burdens with one of your fingers [to lighten the load]. 47 Woe to you! For you repair or build [o]tombs for the prophets, and it was your fathers who killed them. 48 So you are witnesses and approve the deeds of your fathers, because they [actually] killed them, and you repair or build their tombs. 49 For this reason also the wisdom of God said [in the Scriptures], ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will put to death and some they will persecute, 50 so that charges may be brought against this generation [holding them responsible] for the blood of all the prophets shed since the foundation of the world, 51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah [the priest], who was murdered between the altar and the house of God. Yes, I tell you, charges will be brought against this generation.’(I) 52 Woe to you lawyers, because you have taken away the key to knowledge (scriptural truth). You yourselves did not enter, and you held back those who were entering [by your flawed interpretation of God’s word and your man-made tradition].”(J)

53 When He left there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to be very hostile [toward Him] and to interrogate Him on many subjects, 54 plotting against Him to catch Him in something He might say.

祈求就必得着(A)

11 有一天,耶稣在一个地方祈祷,祈祷完了,有一个门徒对他说:“主啊,求你教导我们祷告,像约翰教导他的门徒一样。” 耶稣说:“你们祷告的时候,要说:

‘父啊,愿你的名被尊为圣,

愿你的国降临(有些抄本在此有“愿你的旨意行在地上,如同行在天上”一句);

我们需用的食物,

求你每天赐给我们;

赦免我们的罪,

因为我们也饶恕所有亏负我们的人;

耶稣又对他们说:“你们当中,谁有朋友半夜去找他,说:‘请你借给我三个饼, 因为我有一个朋友旅行来到我这里,我没有甚么可以招待他。’ 而他却在里面回答:‘不要麻烦我,门已经关好了,孩子也跟我在床上了,我不能起来拿给你。’ 我告诉你们,即使不因为他是朋友而起来给他,也会因为他厚颜地直求,而起来照他所需要的给他。 我又告诉你们,你们祈求,就给你们;寻找,就寻见;叩门,就给你们开门。 10 因为所有祈求的就得着,寻找的就寻见,叩门的就给他开门。 11 你们中间作父亲的,哪有儿子求鱼,反拿蛇当作鱼给他呢? 12 或求鸡蛋,反给他蝎子呢? 13 你们虽然不好,尚且知道把好东西给自己的儿女,何况天父,岂不更把圣灵赐给求他的人吗?”

耶稣靠 神的能力赶鬼(B)

14 耶稣赶出一个哑巴鬼,鬼既出去,哑巴就说起话来,众人都希奇。 15 有人说:“他靠鬼王别西卜赶鬼。” 16 又有人试探他,向他求一个从天上来的神迹。 17 耶稣知道他们的心意,就对他们说:“如果一个国家自相纷争,就必定荒凉;如果一个家庭自相为敌,就必然败落。 18 如果撒但自相纷争,他的国怎能站立得住呢?你们说我靠别西卜赶鬼, 19 我若靠别西卜赶鬼,你们的子孙赶鬼又靠谁呢?因此,他们必要作你们的审判官。 20 我若靠 神的能力赶鬼,这就是 神的国临到你们了。 21 一个壮汉拿着武器,看守自己的家园,他的家财就平安无事。 22 但是一个比他更强的人来了,胜过了他,夺去他所倚靠的武器,就把他的家财当作掠物分了。 23 不站在我这一边的就是反对我的;不跟从一起收聚的就是分散的。

污灵去而复返的教训(C)

24 “一个污灵离开了一个人,走遍干旱之地,寻找栖身的地方,却没有找到,就说:‘我要回到我从前离开了的那房子。’ 25 到了之后,看见里面已经打扫干净,粉饰好了, 26 他就去带了另外七个比自己更恶的污灵来,进去住在那里;那人后来的情况,比以前更坏了。”

约拿的神迹(D)

27 耶稣正说这些话的时候,群众中有一个女人高声对他说:“怀你胎的和哺养你的有福了!” 28 他说:“是的,却还不如听 神的道而遵守的人有福。” 29 众人聚集的时候,耶稣就说:“这世代是个邪恶的世代。这世代寻求神迹,可是除了约拿的神迹以外,再没有神迹给他们了。 30 约拿怎样成了尼尼微人的神迹,人子也照样成为这个世代的神迹。 31 审判的时候,南方的女王要和这世代的人一同起来,她要定他们的罪,因为她从地极来到,要听所罗门智慧的话。你看,这里有一位是比所罗门更大的。 32 审判的时候,尼尼微人要和这世代的人一同起来,他们要定这个世代的罪,因为尼尼微人听了约拿所传的就悔改了。你看,这里有一位是比约拿更大的。

里面的光(E)

33 “没有人点了灯,把它放在地窖里,或量器底下,却放在灯台上,叫进来的人看得见光。 34 你的眼睛就是你身体的灯,你的眼睛健全,全身就明亮;如果不健全,全身就黑暗。 35 所以要谨慎,免得你里面的光黑暗了。 36 你若全身明亮,没有一点黑暗,你就完全明亮,好象明亮的灯光照你一样。”

法利赛人和律法师有祸了(F)

37 耶稣说话的时候,有一个法利赛人请耶稣和他一起吃饭;他就进去坐席。 38 这个法利赛人见耶稣吃饭之前不洗手,觉得奇怪。 39 主对他说:“你们法利赛人把杯盘的外面洗净,但你们里面却充满了抢夺和邪恶。 40 无知的人哪,那造外面的,不也造里面吗? 41 只要把里面的施舍出去,你们的一切就都洁净了。 42 然而你们法利赛人有祸了!因为你们把薄荷、茴香和各样菜蔬献上十分之一,却把公义和爱 神的事疏忽了;这些是你们应当作的,但其他的也不可疏忽。 43 你们法利赛人有祸了!因为你们喜爱会堂里的高位和人在巿中心的问安。 44 你们有祸了!因为你们好象不显露的坟墓,走在上面的人并不知道。”

45 律法师中有一个回答他:“老师,你这样说,把我们也侮辱了!” 46 耶稣说:“你们律法师也有祸了,因为你们把难担的担子叫人担,自己连一个指头也不动。 47 你们有祸了!因为你们修造先知的坟墓,而那些先知正是你们祖先所杀的, 48 这样,你们就成了证人,对你们祖先的作为表示同意;他们杀害先知,你们修造先知的坟墓。 49 所以, 神的智慧说:‘我要差遣先知和使徒到他们那里去,有的他们要杀害,有的他们要迫害, 50-51 为要使创世以来众先知所流的血,从亚伯的血起,直到在祭坛和圣所之间受害的撒迦利亚的血为止,都向这一代追讨。’是的,我告诉你们,都要向这一代追讨。 52 你们律法师有祸了!因为你们拿去知识的钥匙,自己不进去,又阻止要进去的人。” 53 耶稣从那里出来,经学家和法利赛人非常敌视他,质问他很多问题, 54 等机会从他的口中找把柄。

Jesus’ Teaching on Prayer(A)(B)

11 One day Jesus was praying(C) in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord,(D) teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.”

He said to them, “When you pray, say:

“‘Father,[a]
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom(E) come.[b]
Give us each day our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins,
    for we also forgive everyone who sins against us.[c](F)
And lead us not into temptation.[d]’”(G)

Then Jesus said to them, “Suppose you have a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I have no food to offer him.’ And suppose the one inside answers, ‘Don’t bother me. The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed. I can’t get up and give you anything.’ I tell you, even though he will not get up and give you the bread because of friendship, yet because of your shameless audacity[e] he will surely get up and give you as much as you need.(H)

“So I say to you: Ask and it will be given to you;(I) seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.

11 “Which of you fathers, if your son asks for[f] a fish, will give him a snake instead? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13 If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

Jesus and Beelzebul(J)(K)

14 Jesus was driving out a demon that was mute. When the demon left, the man who had been mute spoke, and the crowd was amazed.(L) 15 But some of them said, “By Beelzebul,(M) the prince of demons, he is driving out demons.”(N) 16 Others tested him by asking for a sign from heaven.(O)

17 Jesus knew their thoughts(P) and said to them: “Any kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and a house divided against itself will fall. 18 If Satan(Q) is divided against himself, how can his kingdom stand? I say this because you claim that I drive out demons by Beelzebul. 19 Now if I drive out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your followers drive them out? So then, they will be your judges. 20 But if I drive out demons by the finger of God,(R) then the kingdom of God(S) has come upon you.

21 “When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are safe. 22 But when someone stronger attacks and overpowers him, he takes away the armor in which the man trusted and divides up his plunder.

23 “Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.(T)

24 “When an impure spirit comes out of a person, it goes through arid places seeking rest and does not find it. Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’ 25 When it arrives, it finds the house swept clean and put in order. 26 Then it goes and takes seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there. And the final condition of that person is worse than the first.”(U)

27 As Jesus was saying these things, a woman in the crowd called out, “Blessed is the mother who gave you birth and nursed you.”(V)

28 He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God(W) and obey it.”(X)

The Sign of Jonah(Y)

29 As the crowds increased, Jesus said, “This is a wicked generation. It asks for a sign,(Z) but none will be given it except the sign of Jonah.(AA) 30 For as Jonah was a sign to the Ninevites, so also will the Son of Man be to this generation. 31 The Queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the people of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to listen to Solomon’s wisdom;(AB) and now something greater than Solomon is here. 32 The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah;(AC) and now something greater than Jonah is here.

The Lamp of the Body(AD)

33 “No one lights a lamp and puts it in a place where it will be hidden, or under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, so that those who come in may see the light.(AE) 34 Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eyes are healthy,[g] your whole body also is full of light. But when they are unhealthy,[h] your body also is full of darkness. 35 See to it, then, that the light within you is not darkness. 36 Therefore, if your whole body is full of light, and no part of it dark, it will be just as full of light as when a lamp shines its light on you.”

Woes on the Pharisees and the Experts in the Law

37 When Jesus had finished speaking, a Pharisee invited him to eat with him; so he went in and reclined at the table.(AF) 38 But the Pharisee was surprised when he noticed that Jesus did not first wash before the meal.(AG)

39 Then the Lord(AH) said to him, “Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness.(AI) 40 You foolish people!(AJ) Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also? 41 But now as for what is inside you—be generous to the poor,(AK) and everything will be clean for you.(AL)

42 “Woe to you Pharisees, because you give God a tenth(AM) of your mint, rue and all other kinds of garden herbs, but you neglect justice and the love of God.(AN) You should have practiced the latter without leaving the former undone.(AO)

43 “Woe to you Pharisees, because you love the most important seats in the synagogues and respectful greetings in the marketplaces.(AP)

44 “Woe to you, because you are like unmarked graves,(AQ) which people walk over without knowing it.”

45 One of the experts in the law(AR) answered him, “Teacher, when you say these things, you insult us also.”

46 Jesus replied, “And you experts in the law, woe to you, because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them.(AS)

47 “Woe to you, because you build tombs for the prophets, and it was your ancestors who killed them. 48 So you testify that you approve of what your ancestors did; they killed the prophets, and you build their tombs.(AT) 49 Because of this, God in his wisdom(AU) said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, some of whom they will kill and others they will persecute.’(AV) 50 Therefore this generation will be held responsible for the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the beginning of the world, 51 from the blood of Abel(AW) to the blood of Zechariah,(AX) who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, this generation will be held responsible for it all.(AY)

52 “Woe to you experts in the law, because you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.”(AZ)

53 When Jesus went outside, the Pharisees and the teachers of the law began to oppose him fiercely and to besiege him with questions, 54 waiting to catch him in something he might say.(BA)

‘Father, help us
    to honor your name.
Come and set up
    your kingdom.
Give us each day
    the food we need.[a]
Forgive our sins,
as we forgive everyone
    who has done wrong to us.
And keep us
    from being tempted.’ ”

Then Jesus went on to say:

Suppose one of you goes to a friend in the middle of the night and says, “Let me borrow three loaves of bread. A friend of mine has dropped in, and I don't have a thing for him to eat.” And suppose your friend answers, “Don't bother me! The door is bolted, and my children and I are in bed. I cannot get up to give you something.”

He may not get up and give you the bread, just because you are his friend. But he will get up and give you as much as you need, simply because you are not ashamed to keep on asking.

So I tell you to ask and you will receive, search and you will find, knock and the door will be opened for you. 10 Everyone who asks will receive, everyone who searches will find, and the door will be opened for everyone who knocks. 11 Which one of you fathers would give your hungry child a snake if the child asked for a fish? 12 Which one of you would give your child a scorpion if the child asked for an egg? 13 As bad as you are, you still know how to give good gifts to your children. But your heavenly Father is even more ready to give the Holy Spirit to anyone who asks.

Jesus and the Ruler of Demons

(Matthew 12.22-30; Mark 3.20-27)

14 Jesus forced a demon out of a man who could not talk. And after the demon had gone out, the man started speaking, and the crowds were amazed. 15 (A) But some people said, “He forces out demons by the power of Beelzebul, the ruler of the demons!”

16 (B) Others wanted to put Jesus to the test. So they asked him to show them a sign from God. 17 Jesus knew what they were thinking, and he said:

A kingdom where people fight each other will end up in ruin. And a family that fights will break up. 18 If Satan fights against himself, how can his kingdom last? Yet you say that I force out demons by the power of Beelzebul. 19 If I use his power to force out demons, whose power do your own followers use to force them out? They are the ones who will judge you. 20 But if I use God's power to force out demons, it proves that God's kingdom has already come to you.

21 When a strong man arms himself and guards his home, everything he owns is safe. 22 But if a stronger man comes and defeats him, he will carry off the weapons in which the strong man trusted. Then he will divide with others what he has taken. 23 (C) If you are not on my side, you are against me. If you don't gather in the crop with me, you scatter it.

Return of an Evil Spirit

(Matthew 12.43-45)

24 When an evil spirit leaves a person, it travels through the desert, looking for a place to rest. But when it doesn't find a place, it says, “I will go back to the home I left.” 25 When it gets there and finds the place clean and fixed up, 26 it goes off and finds seven other evil spirits even worse than itself. They all come and make their home there, and that person ends up in worse shape than before.

Being Really Blessed

27 While Jesus was still talking, a woman in the crowd spoke up, “The woman who gave birth to you and nursed you is blessed!”

28 Jesus replied, “That's true, but the people who are really blessed are the ones who hear and obey God's message!”[b]

A Sign from God

(Matthew 12.38-42; Mark 8.12)

29 (D) As crowds were gathering around Jesus, he said:

You people of today are evil! You keep looking for a sign from God. But what happened to Jonah[c] is the only sign you will be given. 30 (E) Just as Jonah was a sign to the people of Nineveh, the Son of Man will be a sign to the people of today. 31 (F) When the judgment comes, the Queen of the South[d] will stand there with you and condemn you. She traveled a long way to hear Solomon's wisdom, and yet here is something far greater than Solomon. 32 (G) The people of Nineveh will also stand there with you and condemn you. They turned to God when Jonah preached, and yet here is something far greater than Jonah.

Light

(Matthew 5.15; 6.22,23)

33 (H) No one lights a lamp and then hides it or puts it under a clay pot. A lamp is put on a lampstand, so everyone who comes into the house can see the light. 34 Your eyes are the lamp for your body. When your eyes are good, you have all the light you need. But when your eyes are bad, everything is dark. 35 So be sure your light isn't darkness. 36 If you have light, and nothing is dark, then light will be everywhere, as when a lamp shines brightly on you.

Jesus Condemns the Pharisees and Teachers of the Law of Moses

(Matthew 23.1-36; Mark 12.38-40; Luke 20.45-47)

37 When Jesus finished speaking, a Pharisee invited him home for a meal. Jesus went and sat down to eat.[e] 38 The Pharisee was surprised that he did not wash his hands[f] before eating. 39 So the Lord said to him:

You Pharisees clean the outside of cups and dishes, but on the inside you are greedy and evil. 40 You fools! Didn't God make both the outside and the inside?[g] 41 If you would only give what you have to the poor, everything you do would please God.

42 (I) You Pharisees are in for trouble! You give God a tenth of the spices from your gardens, such as mint and rue. But you cheat people, and you don't love God. You should be fair and kind to others and still give a tenth to God.

43 You Pharisees are in for trouble! You love the front seats in the synagogues, and you like to be greeted with honor in the market. 44 But you are in for trouble! You are like unmarked graves[h] that people walk on without even knowing it.

45 A teacher of the Law of Moses spoke up, “Teacher, you said cruel things about us.”

46 Jesus replied:

You teachers are also in for trouble! You load people down with heavy burdens, but you won't lift a finger to help them carry the loads. 47 Yes, you are really in for trouble. You build monuments to honor the prophets your own people murdered long ago. 48 You must think that was the right thing for your people to do, or else you would not have built monuments for the prophets they murdered.

49 Because of your evil deeds, the Wisdom of God said, “I will send prophets and apostles to you. But you will murder some and mistreat others.” 50 You people living today will be punished for all the prophets who have been murdered since the beginning of the world. 51 (J) This includes every prophet from the time of Abel to the time of Zechariah,[i] who was murdered between the altar and the temple. You people will certainly be punished for all of this.

52 You teachers of the Law of Moses are really in for trouble! You carry the keys to the door of knowledge about God. But you never go in, and you keep others from going in.

53 Jesus was about to leave, but the teachers and the Pharisees wanted to get even with him. They tried to make him say what he thought about other things, 54 so they could catch him saying something wrong.
