Ang Katanungan tungkol sa Sabbath(A)

Minsan isang Sabbath,[a] habang nagdaraan si Jesus sa isang triguhan, namitas ang kanyang mga alagad ng uhay at pagkaligis dito ng kanilang mga kamay ay kinain ang mga ito. Ngunit ilan sa mga Fariseo ang nagsabi, “Bakit ninyo ginagawa ang ipinagbabawal kung Sabbath?” Kaya't sinagot sila ni Jesus, “Hindi ba ninyo nabasa ang ginawa ni David nang magutom siya at ang kanyang mga kasama? Pumasok siya sa bahay ng Diyos, kinuha ang tinapay na ihinandog at kinain ito at ipinamigay pa sa kanyang mga kasama. Hindi ito ipinahihintulot kainin ninuman maliban ng mga pari.” At sinabi niya sa kanila, “Ang Anak ng Tao ay Panginoon ng Sabbath.”

Ang Taong Paralisado ang Kamay(B)

Araw din ng Sabbath nang pumasok si Jesus sa sinagoga upang magturo. Naroroon ang isang lalaking paralisado ang kanang kamay. Si Jesus ay minatyagang mabuti ng mga tagapagturo ng Kautusan at mga Fariseo kung magpapagaling siya sa Sabbath. Nagnanais silang may maibintang laban sa kanya. Ngunit alam niya ang kanilang iniisip kaya't sinabi niya sa lalaking paralisado ang kamay, “Halika rito sa gitna.” Tumindig ang lalaki at tumayo nga ito roon. Sinabi sa kanila ni Jesus, “Tatanungin ko kayo, dapat bang gumawa ng mabuti o gumawa ng masama sa araw ng Sabbath? Ang magligtas ng buhay o pumuksa?” 10 At pagkalibot ng tingin sa kanilang lahat ay sinabi niya sa lalaki, “Iunat mo ang iyong mga kamay.” Ganoon nga ang ginawa ng lalaki at gumaling ang kanyang kamay. 11 Ngunit nagngitngit sila sa galit at pinag-usapan nila kung ano ang maaari nilang gawin kay Jesus.

Ang Pagtawag sa Labindalawa(C)

12 Nang mga araw na iyon, umakyat sa bundok si Jesus upang manalangin. Magdamag siyang nanalangin sa Diyos. 13 Kinaumagahan, tinawag niya ang kanyang mga alagad at pumili siya sa kanila ng labindalawa na tinawag niyang mga apostol. 14 Ang mga ito ay sina Simon na tinawag niyang Pedro, si Andres na kapatid nito; sina Santiago at Juan; sina Felipe, Bartolome, 15 Mateo, at Tomas; si Santiago na anak ni Alfeo; si Simon na tinawag na Makabayan; 16 si Judas na anak ni Santiago; at si Judas Iscariote, na naging taksil.

Si Jesus ay Nagturo at Nagpagaling ng may Sakit(D)

17 At bumaba si Jesus kasama nila, at tumayo sa isang patag na lugar. Naroon ang malaking pangkat ng kanyang mga alagad at ang napakaraming taong buhat sa buong Judea at sa Jerusalem at sa mga baybaying bayan ng Tiro at Sidon. 18 Pumunta sila roon upang mapakinggan siya at mapagaling sa kanilang mga karamdaman. Pinagaling din niya ang mga pinahihirapan ng maruruming espiritu. 19 Sinikap ng lahat ng tao na mahipo siya sapagkat may kapangyarihang nagmumula sa kanya na nagpapagaling sa lahat.

Ang Mapapalad at ang mga Kahabag-habag(E)

20 At tumingin si Jesus sa kanyang mga alagad, at sinabi niya,

“Pinagpala kayong mga dukha,
    sapagkat sa inyo ang kaharian ng Diyos.
21 Pinagpala kayong ngayon ay nagugutom,
    sapagkat kayo ay bubusugin.
Pinagpala kayong ngayon ay tumatangis,
    sapagkat kayo ay hahalakhak.

22 Pinagpala kayo kung kinapopootan kayo ng mga tao, at kung ipinagtatabuyan kayo at inaalipusta, at kung kinasusuklaman na tila masama ang inyong pangalan dahil sa Anak ng Tao. 23 Magalak kayo sa araw na iyon at lumundag sa kagalakan sapagkat tiyak na malaki ang inyong gantimpala sa langit. Ganoon din ang ginawa ng kanilang mga ninuno sa mga propeta.

24 Subalit kaysaklap ng sasapitin ninyong mayayaman,
    sapagkat tinamasa na ninyo ang inyong kaginhawahan.
25 Kaysaklap ng sasapitin ninyong mga busog ngayon,
    sapagkat kayo ay magugutom.
Kaysaklap ng sasapitin ninyong tumatawa ngayon
    sapagkat kayo ay magluluksa at tatangis.

26 Kaysaklap ng sasapitin ninyo kapag lahat ng tao ay nagsasabi ng mabuti tungkol sa inyo, sapagkat ganoon din ang ginawa ng kanilang mga ninuno sa mga bulaang propeta.”

Pag-ibig sa mga Kaaway(F)

27 “Subalit sinasabi ko sa inyong mga nakikinig, ibigin ninyo ang inyong kaaway, at gawan ninyo ng kabutihan ang namumuhi sa inyo. 28 Pagpalain ninyo ang sumusumpa sa inyo, at ipanalangin ang mga nang-aapi sa inyo. 29 Kapag may sumampal sa iyo sa pisngi, iharap mo rin ang kabila. Kapag inagaw ang iyong balabal, huwag mong ipagkait ang iyong damit panloob. 30 Bigyan mo ang bawat humihingi sa iyo. At huwag mo nang bawiin pa ang iyong mga ari-arian sa umagaw nito. 31 Gawin mo sa iyong kapwa ang nais mong gawin nila sa iyo. 32 Kung ang mamahalin ninyo ay iyon lang mga nagmamahal sa inyo, ano ang mapapala ninyo? Kahit ang mga makasalanan ay nagmamahal sa nagmamahal sa kanila. 33 Ano ang mapapala ninyo kung gagawa kayo ng mabuti doon lamang sa gumagawa sa inyo ng mabuti? Ganoon din ang ginagawa ng mga makasalanan. 34 Kung kayo'y nagpapautang doon lamang sa mga taong inaasahan ninyong makababayad, ano ang mapapala ninyo? Kahit ang mga makasalanan ay nagpapautang sa inaasahan nilang makapagbabayad. 35 Kaya't mahalin ninyo ang inyong mga kaaway, gumawa kayo ng mabuti, at magpahiram kayo nang hindi umaasa ng kapalit. Malaki ang magiging gantimpala ninyo at kayo ay magiging mga anak ng Kataas-taasan sapagkat siya ay mabait sa mga walang utang na loob at sa masasama. 36 Maging mahabagin kayo gaya ng inyong Ama na mahabagin.”

Ang Paghatol sa Iba(G)

37 “Huwag kayong humatol upang hindi kayo hatulan. Huwag kayong humusga upang hindi kayo mahusgahan. Magpatawad kayo at kayo ay patatawarin. 38 Magbigay kayo at kayo ay bibigyan. Husto ang sukat, siksik, liglig at umaapaw ang ilalagay nila sa inyong kandungan. Sapagkat ang panukat na ginamit ninyo ang siya ring gagamiting panukat sa inyo.” 39 Sinabi pa niya sa kanila ang isang talinghaga, “Maaari bang akayin ng bulag ang kapwa bulag? Hindi kaya sila kapwa mahulog sa hukay? 40 Hindi makahihigit sa kanyang guro ang isang alagad; subalit ang sinumang sinanay nang lubos ay magiging tulad ng kanyang guro. 41 Bakit mo pinapansin ang puwing sa mata ng iyong kapatid gayong hindi mo napapansin ang troso sa iyong mata? 42 Paano mo masasabi sa iyong kapatid, ‘Kapatid, hayaan mong alisin ko ang puwing sa iyong mata,’ gayong ikaw mismo ay hindi nakakakita ng troso sa sarili mong mata? Mapagkunwari! Alisin mo muna ang troso sa iyong mata at makakakita ka nang mabuti sa pag-alis mo ng puwing sa mata ng iyong kapatid.”

Ang Punongkahoy at ang Bunga Nito(H)

43 “Walang mabuting punong namumunga ng masama. Gayon din naman, walang masamang punong namumunga ng mabuti. 44 Bawat puno ay nakikilala sa sarili nitong bunga. Sapagkat hindi makapipitas ng igos sa tinikan ni hindi rin makapipitas ng ubas sa dawagan. 45 Gumagawa ng kabutihan ang mabuting tao dahil sa mabuting kayamanan ng kanyang puso, ngunit ang masamang tao ay gumagawa ng masama dahil sa kanyang kasamaan. Sapagkat mula sa kayamanan ng puso ay nagsasalita ang bibig.”

Ang Dalawang Nagtayo ng Bahay(I)

46 “Bakit ninyo ako tinatawag na ‘Panginoon! Panginoon!’ gayong hindi naman ninyo sinusunod ang inuutos ko? 47 Ipapakita ko sa inyo kung saan maihahalintulad ang lahat ng nagsisilapit sa akin at nakikinig sa aking mga salita at gumagawa nito. 48 Siya ay tulad ng isang taong sa pagtatayo ng kanyang bahay ay naghukay nang malalim at naglagay ng pundasyon sa ibabaw ng bato. Nang dumaan ang baha at humampas sa bahay na iyon ay hindi iyon natinag sapagkat mahusay ang pagkakatayo nito. 49 Ngunit ang nakarinig subalit hindi sumusunod sa mga ito at tulad ng isang taong nagtayo ng kanyang bahay at itinayo ito sa lupang walang pundasyon. Kaya't nang hampasin ito ng agos ay agad na bumagsak. Malaki ang magiging sira ng bahay na iyon.”

Araw ng Sabat

Nangyari, sa ikalawang araw ng Sabat pagkaraan ng una, si Jesus ay dumaan sa triguhan. Ang mga alagad niya ay pumigtal ng mga uhay. Ito ay nililigis nila sa kanilang mga kamay at kinakain.

Sinabi ng ilang Fariseo sa kanila: Bakit ginagawa ninyo ang ipinagbabawal gawin sa araw ng Sabat?

Sumagot si Jesus. Sinabi niya: Hindi ba ninyo nabasa ang ginawa ni David ng magutom siya at ang mga kasama niya? Hindi ba pumasok siya sa bahay ng Diyos at kinuha ang tinapay na handog? Kinain niya ito at binigyan din ang kaniyang mga kasama. Ito ay bawal kainin maliban ng mga saserdote. Sinabi niya sa kanila: Ang Anak ng Tao ay Panginoon din ng araw ng Sabat.

Nangyari din, sa iba pang araw ng Sabat, na pumasok siya sa isang sinagoga at nagturo. Mayroon doong isang lalaki na ang kanang kamay ay nanunuyot. Minamatyagan siya ng mga guro ng kautusan at mga Fariseokung siya ay magpapagaling sa araw ng Sabat. Ito ay upang makakita sila ng maipaparatang laban sa kaniya. Alam ni Jesus ang kanilang iniisip. Sinabi niya sa lalaking nanunuyot ang kamay: Tumindig ka at tumayo sa gitna. Tumindig nga siya at tumayo doon.

Pagkatapos, sinabi ni Jesus sa kanila: Magtatanong ako sa inyo. Naaayon ba sa batas ang gumawa ng kabutihan o gumawa ng kasamaan sa araw ng Sabat? Ang magligtas ng buhay o pumatay?

10 Tiningnan niya ang bawat isa sa palibot. Pagkatingin niya, sinabi niya sa lalaki: Iunat mo ang iyong kamay. Ginawa niya ang gayon at ang kaniyang kamay ay nanauli sa dati na malusog tulad ng isa. 11 Ngunit nagngitngit sila sa galit. Nagsanggunian sila sa isa’t isa kung ano ang gagawin nila kay Jesus.

Tinawag ni Jesus ang Labindalawang Alagad

12 Nangyari, noong mga araw na iyon, siya ay pumunta sa bundok upang manalangin. Nanalangin siya sa Diyos sa buong magdamag.

13 Nang mag-uumaga na, tinawag niya ang kaniyang mga alagad. Mula sa kanila ay pumili siya ng labindalawa na tinawag din niyang mga apostol. 14 Ang mga ito ay sina Simeon, na tinagurian din niyang Pedro, at si Andres na kaniyang kapatid.Ang iba ay sina Santiago at Juan, Felipe at Bartolome. 15 Kasama rin si Mateo, si Tomas, si Santiago, na anak ni Alfeo, at si Simon na tinatawag na Makabayan. 16 Kasama rin si Judas na kapatid ni Santiago at si Judas na taga-Keriot, na siyang naging taksil.

17 Si Jesus ay bumabang kasama nila at tumayo sa isang patag na dako. Pumunta roon ang karamihan ng kaniyang mga alagad at mga tao na lubhang marami. Ang mga tao ay nanggaling sa buong Judea at Jerusalem at sa baybaying dagat ng Tiro at Sidon. Sila ay pumunta roon upang makinig sa kaniya at mapagaling ang kanilang mga sakit. 18 Ang mga ginugulo ng mga karumal-dumal na espiritu ay dumating din at sila rin ay pinagaling. 19 Hinangad ng lahat ng mga tao na mahipo siya sapagkat may kapangyarihang lumalabas sa kaniya na nagpapagaling sa kanilang lahat.

Ang Pahayag ng Pagpapala at Pagkaaba

20 Tumingin si Jesus sa kaniyang mga alagad. Sinabi niya: Pinagpala kayong mga mapagpakumbaba sapagkat sa inyo ang paghahari ng Diyos.

21 Pinagpala kayong mga nagugutom ngayon sapagkat kayo ay bubusugin. Pinagpala kayong umiiyak ngayon sapagkat kayo ay tatawa na may galak. 22 Pinagpala kayo kapag kinapopootan kayo ng mga tao at kapag itinatakwil nila kayo. Pinagpala kayo kung pinapahiya kayo ng mga tao at itinuturing nila ang inyong pangalan na tulad sa masama. Pinagpala kayo kapag ang mga ito ay ginawa sa inyo dahil sa akin na Anak ng Tao.

23 Magalak kayo sa araw na iyon at lumukso sa kagalakan. Narito, malaki ang gantimpala ninyo sa langit. Ganito rin ang ginawa ng mga ninuno nila sa mga propeta.

24 Sa aba ninyo na mayayaman sapagkat tinatanggap ninyo anginyong kaaliwan. 25 Sa aba ninyo na mga busog sapagkat kayo ay magugutom.Sa aba ninyo na tumatawa ngayon sapagkat kayo ay magluluksa at tatangis. 26 Sa aba ninyo kung ang lahat ng tao ay nagsasabi ng mabuti patungkol sa inyo. Ganito rin ang ginawa ng mga ninuno nila sa mga bulaang propeta.

Ibigin mo ang Iyong Kaaway

27 Sinasabi ko sa inyo na nakikinig: Ibigin ninyo ang inyong mga kaaway. Gawan ninyo ng mabuti ang mga napopoot sa inyo.

28 Sabihin ninyo ang mabubuti sa mga nanunungayaw sa inyo. Ipanalangin ninyo sila na umaalipusta sa inyo. 29 Iharap mo ang kabila mong pisngi sa kaniya na sumampal sa iyo. Huwag mong ipagkait ang iyong balabal sa kaniya na kumuha ng iyong damit. 30 Magbigay ka sa bawat isang humihingi sa iyo. Huwag mo nang bawiin ang iyong mga pag-aari sa kumuha nito sa iyo. 31 Ayon sa nais ninyong gawin ng mga tao sa inyo, gawin din ninyo ang gayon sa kanila.

32 Anong pakinabang ang maaasahan ninyo kung iniibig ninyo ang mga umiibig sa inyo? Ito ay sapagkat ang mga makasalanan ay umiibig din sa mga umiibig sa kanila. 33 Anong pakinabang ang maaasahan ninyo kung gumagawa kayo ng mabuti sa kanila na gumagawa ng mabuti sa inyo? Ito ay sapagkat gayundin ang ginagawa ng mga makasalanan. 34 Anong pakinabang ang maaasahan ninyo kung magpapahiram kayo sa kanila na inaasahan ninyong makakapagbigay sa inyo? Ito ay sapagkat ang mga makasalanan ay nagpapahiram din samga makasalanan upang sila ay tumanggap din ng gayon. 35 Ibigin ninyo ang inyong mga kaaway at gumawa kayo ng mabuti. Magpahiram kayo na hindi umaasa ng kapalit at ang gantimpala ninyo ay magiging malaki. Kayo ay magiging mga anak ng kataas-taasan sapagkat siya ay mabuti sa mga hindi mapagpasalamat at sa mga masasama. 36 Maging mga maawain nga kayo, gaya rin naman ng inyong Ama na maawain.

37 Huwag kayong humatol upang hindi kayo hatulan. Huwag kayong magbigay hatol upang hindi kayo bigyang hatol. Magpatawad kayo upang kayo ay patawarin. 38 Magbigay kayo at ito ay ibibigay sa inyo, mabuting sukat, siniksik, niliglig at umaapaw sapagkat ang panukat na inyong ipinangsukat ay siya ring panukat na gagamitin sa inyo.

Ang Talinghaga Patungkol sa Pagkabulag

39 Isang talinghaga ang sinabi niya sa kanila. Makakaakay ba ng bulag ang isang bulag? Hindi ba kapwa silang mahuhulog sa hukay?

40 Ang isang alagad ay hindi higit sa kaniyang guro. Ang bawat isang alagad ay magiging katulad ng kaniyang guro kung sila ay lubos nang handa.

Ang Paghatol sa Iba

41 Bakit mo tinitingnan ang puwing na nasa mata ng iyong kapatid ngunit hindi mo napupuna ang troso na nasa sarili mong mata?

42 Paano mo masasabi sa iyong kapatid: Kapatid, hayaan mong alisin ko ang puwing sa iyong mata kung hindi mo nakikita ang troso na nasa iyong mata? Ikaw na mapagpa­imbabaw! Alisin mo muna ang troso na nasa iyong mata. Pagka-alis mo nito, makakakita ka nang malinaw upang maalis mo ang puwing sa mata ng iyong kapatid.

Ang Puno at ang Bunga Nito

43 Sapagkat ang mabuting punong-kahoy ay hindi namu­munga ng masamang bunga. Gayundin naman, ang masamang punong-kahoy ay hindi namumunga ng mabuting bunga.

44 Ang bawat punong-kahoy ay nakikilala sa kaniyang sariling bunga. Sapagkat ang mga tao ay hindi nangangalap ng igos sa mga tinik. Hindi rin sila nangangalap ng ubas sa mga dawag. 45 Ang mabuting tao ay nagbubunga ng mabuti mula sa mabuting kayamanan na nasa kaniyang puso. Ang masamang tao ay nagbubunga ng masama mula sa masamang kayamanan na nasa kaniyang puso, sapagkat mula sa kasaganaanng puso ay sinasalita ng bibig.

Ang Matalino at Mangmang na Tagapagtayo

46 Bakit ninyo ako tinatawag na: Panginoon, Panginoon, at hindi ninyo ginagawa ang aking sinasabi?

47 Ang isang tao ay lumalapit sa akin at nakikinig ng aking mga salita at gumagawa nito. Ipapakita ko sa inyo kungkanino katulad ang taong ito. 48 Siya ay katulad ng isang lalaki na nagtayo ng isang bahay. Naghukay siya ng malalim at naglagay ng saligan sa bato. Nang magkaroon ng baha, ang agos ay sumalpok ng malakas sa bahay na iyon. Ang bahay ay hindi natinag sapagkat ito ay itinayo sa bato. 49 Ngunit siya na nakarinig at hindi gumawa ay tulad ng isang tao na nagtayo ng bahay sa ibabaw ng lupa na walang saligan. Ang agos ay sumalpok ng malakas sa bahay at pagdaka, ito ay bumagsak. Ang pinsala ng bahay na iyon ay lubhang malaki.

Jesus Is Lord of the Sabbath(A)

One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and his disciples began to pick some heads of grain, rub them in their hands and eat the kernels.(B) Some of the Pharisees asked, “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath?”(C)

Jesus answered them, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry?(D) He entered the house of God, and taking the consecrated bread, he ate what is lawful only for priests to eat.(E) And he also gave some to his companions.” Then Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man(F) is Lord of the Sabbath.”

On another Sabbath(G) he went into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was shriveled. The Pharisees and the teachers of the law were looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, so they watched him closely(H) to see if he would heal on the Sabbath.(I) But Jesus knew what they were thinking(J) and said to the man with the shriveled hand, “Get up and stand in front of everyone.” So he got up and stood there.

Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?”

10 He looked around at them all, and then said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He did so, and his hand was completely restored. 11 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law were furious(K) and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.

The Twelve Apostles(L)

12 One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God.(M) 13 When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles:(N) 14 Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, 15 Matthew,(O) Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, 16 Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

Blessings and Woes(P)

17 He went down with them and stood on a level place. A large crowd of his disciples was there and a great number of people from all over Judea, from Jerusalem, and from the coastal region around Tyre and Sidon,(Q) 18 who had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. Those troubled by impure spirits were cured, 19 and the people all tried to touch him,(R) because power was coming from him and healing them all.(S)

20 Looking at his disciples, he said:

“Blessed are you who are poor,
    for yours is the kingdom of God.(T)
21 Blessed are you who hunger now,
    for you will be satisfied.(U)
Blessed are you who weep now,
    for you will laugh.(V)
22 Blessed are you when people hate you,
    when they exclude you(W) and insult you(X)
    and reject your name as evil,
        because of the Son of Man.(Y)

23 “Rejoice in that day and leap for joy,(Z) because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets.(AA)

24 “But woe to you who are rich,(AB)
    for you have already received your comfort.(AC)
25 Woe to you who are well fed now,
    for you will go hungry.(AD)
Woe to you who laugh now,
    for you will mourn and weep.(AE)
26 Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you,
    for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets.(AF)

Love for Enemies(AG)

27 “But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you,(AH) 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.(AI) 29 If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. 30 Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back.(AJ) 31 Do to others as you would have them do to you.(AK)

32 “If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you?(AL) Even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you?(AM) Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. 35 But love your enemies, do good to them,(AN) and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children(AO) of the Most High,(AP) because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. 36 Be merciful,(AQ) just as your Father(AR) is merciful.

Judging Others(AS)

37 “Do not judge, and you will not be judged.(AT) Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.(AU) 38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.(AV) For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”(AW)

39 He also told them this parable: “Can the blind lead the blind? Will they not both fall into a pit?(AX) 40 The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher.(AY)

41 “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? 42 How can you say to your brother, ‘Brother, let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when you yourself fail to see the plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

A Tree and Its Fruit(AZ)

43 “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit. 44 Each tree is recognized by its own fruit.(BA) People do not pick figs from thornbushes, or grapes from briers. 45 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.(BB)

The Wise and Foolish Builders(BC)

46 “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’(BD) and do not do what I say?(BE) 47 As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice,(BF) I will show you what they are like. 48 They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built. 49 But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.”

And it came to pass on the second sabbath after the first, that he went through the corn fields; and his disciples plucked the ears of corn, and did eat, rubbing them in their hands.

And certain of the Pharisees said unto them, Why do ye that which is not lawful to do on the sabbath days?

And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read so much as this, what David did, when himself was an hungred, and they which were with him;

How he went into the house of God, and did take and eat the shewbread, and gave also to them that were with him; which it is not lawful to eat but for the priests alone?

And he said unto them, That the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.

And it came to pass also on another sabbath, that he entered into the synagogue and taught: and there was a man whose right hand was withered.

And the scribes and Pharisees watched him, whether he would heal on the sabbath day; that they might find an accusation against him.

But he knew their thoughts, and said to the man which had the withered hand, Rise up, and stand forth in the midst. And he arose and stood forth.

Then said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy it?

10 And looking round about upon them all, he said unto the man, Stretch forth thy hand. And he did so: and his hand was restored whole as the other.

11 And they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus.

12 And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.

13 And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles;

14 Simon, (whom he also named Peter,) and Andrew his brother, James and John, Philip and Bartholomew,

15 Matthew and Thomas, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called Zelotes,

16 And Judas the brother of James, and Judas Iscariot, which also was the traitor.

17 And he came down with them, and stood in the plain, and the company of his disciples, and a great multitude of people out of all Judaea and Jerusalem, and from the sea coast of Tyre and Sidon, which came to hear him, and to be healed of their diseases;

18 And they that were vexed with unclean spirits: and they were healed.

19 And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all.

20 And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God.

21 Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh.

22 Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake.

23 Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets.

24 But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation.

25 Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep.

26 Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.

27 But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you,

28 Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.

29 And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloak forbid not to take thy coat also.

30 Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again.

31 And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.

32 For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them.

33 And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same.

34 And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again.

35 But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.

36 Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.

37 Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:

38 Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.

39 And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch?

40 The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master.

41 And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but perceivest not the beam that is in thine own eye?

42 Either how canst thou say to thy brother, Brother, let me pull out the mote that is in thine eye, when thou thyself beholdest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to pull out the mote that is in thy brother's eye.

43 For a good tree bringeth not forth corrupt fruit; neither doth a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.

44 For every tree is known by his own fruit. For of thorns men do not gather figs, nor of a bramble bush gather they grapes.

45 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is good; and an evil man out of the evil treasure of his heart bringeth forth that which is evil: for of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.

46 And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?

47 Whosoever cometh to me, and heareth my sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like:

48 He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock.

49 But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great.

Plucking Grain on the Sabbath

Now it happened that on a Sabbath he went through the grain fields, and his disciples were picking and eating the heads of grain, rubbing them[a] in their[b] hands. But some of the Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what is not permitted on the Sabbath? And Jesus answered and[c] said to them, “Have you not read this, what David did when he and those who were with him were hungry— how he entered into the house of God and took the bread of the presentation, which it is not permitted to eat (except the priests alone), and[d] ate it[e] and gave it[f] to those with him?” And he said to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

A Man with a Withered Hand Healed

Now it happened that on another Sabbath he entered into the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there, and his right hand was withered. So the scribes and the Pharisees were watching closely[g] to see if he would heal on the Sabbath, in order that they could find a reason[h] to accuse him. But he knew their thoughts and said to the man who had the withered hand, “Get up and stand in the middle,” and he got up and[i] stood there. And Jesus said to them, “I ask you whether it is permitted on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save a life or to destroy it?”[j] 10 And after[k] looking around at them all, he said to him, “Stretch out your hand,” and he did, and his hand was restored. 11 But they were filled with fury, and began discussing[l] with one another what they might do to Jesus.

The Selection of the Twelve Apostles

12 Now it happened that in these days he went away to the mountain to pray, and was spending the whole night in prayer to God. 13 And when day came, he summoned his disciples and chose from them twelve, whom he also named apostles: 14 Simon (whom he also named Peter) and his brother Andrew, and James, and John, and Philip, and Bartholomew, 15 and Matthew, and Thomas, and James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon who was called the Zealot, 16 and Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.

The Sermon on the Plain: The Beatitudes

17 And he came down with them and[m] stood on a level place, and a large crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all of Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast district of Tyre and Sidon, 18 who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases, and those who were troubled by unclean spirits were cured. 19 And the whole crowd was seeking to touch him, because power was going out from him and healing them all.

20 And he lifted up his eyes to his disciples and[n] said,

“Blessed are the poor,
    because yours is the kingdom of God.
21 Blessed are those who are hungry now,
    because you will be satisfied.
Blessed are those who weep now,
    Because you will laugh.
22 Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you and revile you and spurn your name as evil on account of the Son of Man. 23 Rejoice in that day, and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven. For their fathers used to do the same things to the prophets.

The Sermon on the Plain: Woes

24 “But woe to you who are rich,
    because you have received your comfort.
25 Woe to you who are satisfied now,
    because you will be hungry.
Woe, you who laugh now,
    because you will mourn and weep.
26 Woe whenever all people speak well of you,
    for their fathers used to do the same things to the false prophets.

The Sermon on the Plain: Love for Enemies

27 “But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. 29 To the one who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from the one who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic also. 30 Give to everyone who asks you, and from the one who takes away your things, do not ask for them back.[o] 31 And just as you want people to do[p] to you, do the same[q] to them.

32 “And if you love those who love you, what kind of credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them! 33 And if[r] you do good to those who do good to you, what kind of credit is that to you? Even the sinners do the same! 34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive back, what kind of credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, so that they may get back an equal amount! 35 But love your enemies, and do good, and lend expecting back nothing, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. 36 Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful![s]

The Sermon on the Plain: On Judging Others

37 “And do not judge, and you will never be judged. And do not condemn, and you will never be condemned. Pardon, and you will be pardoned. 38 Give, and it will be given to you, a good measure—pressed down, shaken, overflowing—they will pour out into your lap. For with the measure by which you measure out, it will be measured out to you in return.”

39 And he also told them a parable: “Surely a blind person cannot lead the blind, can he?[t] Will they not both fall into a pit? 40 A disciple is not superior to his[u] teacher, but everyone, when he[v] is fully trained, will be like his teacher. 41 And why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the beam of wood that is in your own eye? 42 How are you able to say to your brother, “Brother, allow me to remove the speck that is in your eye,” while[w] you yourself do not see the beam of wood in your own eye? Hypocrite! First remove the beam of wood from your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck that is in your brother’s eye!

The Sermon on the Plain: Trees and Their Fruit
