Ang Pagtawag sa mga Unang Alagad(A)
5 Samantalang si Jesus ay nakatayo sa baybay ng lawa ng Genesaret at habang nag-uunahang palapit sa kanya ang mga tao upang makinig sa salita ng Diyos, 2 nakita niya ang dalawang bangkang nakadaong sa tabi ng lawa. Wala na sa mga bangka ang mga mangingisda dahil naghuhugas na ng kanilang mga lambat. 3 Sinakyan niya ang bangka na pag-aari ni Simon. Hiniling niya kay Simon na sumagwan nang kaunti palayo sa lupa. Umupo siya at nagturo sa mga tao mula sa bangka. 4 Nang matapos siyang magsalita, sinabi niya kay Simon, “Dumako kayo sa malalim at ihulog ninyo ang inyong mga lambat upang makahuli.” 5 Sumagot si Simon, “Ginoo, buong magdamag po kaming nagtiyaga ngunit wala kaming nahuli. Subalit dahil sa inyong utos, ihuhulog ko ang lambat.” 6 Pagkagawa nila nito, nakahuli sila ng napakaraming isda na halos ikapunit ng kanilang mga lambat. 7 Kaya't kinawayan nila ang kanilang mga kasamahan sa kabilang bangka upang lumapit at tumulong sa kanila. Lumapit nga ang mga ito at pinuno nila ang dalawang bangka hanggang sa halos lumubog na ang mga ito. 8 Nang makita ito ni Simon Pedro, lumuhod siya sa harap ni Jesus habang sinasabi, “Lumayo po kayo sa akin, Panginoon, sapagkat ako'y taong makasalanan.” 9 Sapagkat siya at ang lahat ng kanyang mga kasama ay namangha dahil sa nahuli nilang mga isda, 10 gayundin ang mga anak ni Zebedeo na sina Santiago at Juan, na mga kasosyo ni Simon. Sinabi ni Jesus kay Simon, “Huwag kang matakot. Mula ngayon, ikaw ay magiging tagapangisda na ng mga tao.” 11 Nang maidaong na nila sa lupa ang mga bangka, iniwan nila ang lahat at sumunod kay Jesus.
Pinagaling ang Isang Ketongin(B)
12 Minsan ay nasa isang bayan si Jesus nang dumating ang isang lalaking punung-puno ng ketong. Pagkakita nito kay Jesus, patirapa itong nakiusap sa kanya, “Panginoon, kung nais po ninyo, ako ay mapagagaling ninyo.” 13 Iniunat ni Jesus ang kanyang kamay, hinawakan ang lalaki at sinabi, “Nais ko, gumaling ka!” At agad nawala ang ketong ng lalaki. 14 Pinagbilinan ni Jesus ang lalaki, “Huwag mo itong ipagsasabi kaninuman. Humayo ka at ipasuri mo ang iyong sarili sa pari, at mag-alay ng ayon sa iniutos ni Moises tungkol sa iyong pagkalinis bilang patotoo sa kanila.” 15 Ngunit lalong kumalat ang balita tungkol kay Jesus at pinagkaguluhan siya ng napakaraming tao upang makinig at magpagamot ng kanilang mga karamdaman. 16 Ngunit siya ay umiwas patungong ilang at nanalangin.
Pinagaling ang Isang Paralitiko(C)
17 Isang araw, habang siya ay nagtuturo, nakaupong malapit ang mga Fariseo at mga tagapagturo ng Kautusan. Nagmula pa sila sa bawat nayon ng Galilea, Judea, at Jerusalem. Ang kapangyarihan ng Panginoon ay nakay Jesus upang makapagpagaling. 18 At dumating ang mga lalaking may dalang isang lalaking paralitiko na nakaratay sa higaan. Sinikap nilang maipasok ito at mailagay sa harapan ni Jesus. 19 Ngunit dahil sa dami ng tao ay hindi nila malaman kung paano ito mailalapit sa kanya. Kaya't umakyat sila sa bubungan, tinuklap ang bubong na tisa at sa harapan ni Jesus sa gitna ng silid ay ibinaba ang lalaking nakahiga sa higaan. 20 Nang makita ni Jesus ang kanilang pananampalataya ay sinabi niya, “Lalaki, pinatatawad ka na sa iyong mga kasalanan.” 21 Kaya't nagsimulang magtanong ang mga tagapagturo ng Kautusan at ang mga Fariseo, “Sino ba itong nagsasalita ng kalapastanganan sa Diyos? Sino ba ang makapagpapatawad ng mga kasalanan maliban sa Diyos?” 22 Ngunit batid ni Jesus ang kanilang mga iniisip kaya't sinabi niya sa kanila, “Bakit kayo nag-iisip ng ganyan? 23 Alin ba ang mas madali? Ang sabihing, ‘Pinatatawad na ang iyong mga kasalanan,’ o ang sabihing, ‘Tumindig ka at lumakad?’ 24 Ngunit upang malaman ninyo na ang Anak ng Tao ay may kapangyarihan sa lupa na magpatawad ng mga kasalanan,” sinabi niya sa paralitiko, “Sinasabi ko sa iyo, tumindig ka at umuwi ka na sa iyong bahay na dala ang iyong higaan.” 25 Kaagad tumayo ang lalaki sa harapan nila, binuhat ang kanyang higaan, at umuwing nagpupuri sa Diyos. 26 Binalot ng pagkamangha ang lahat at pinuri nila ang Diyos. Napuno sila ng takot at nagsabing, “Kamangha-manghang mga bagay ang nasaksihan natin ngayon!”
Ang Pagtawag kay Levi(D)
27 Pagkatapos ng mga ito ay umalis si Jesus at nakita niya ang isang maniningil ng buwis na ang pangalan ay Levi. Nakaupo ito sa tanggapan ng buwis. Sinabi ni Jesus sa kanya, “Sumunod ka sa akin!” 28 Tumayo si Levi, iniwan ang lahat at sumunod kay Jesus. 29 Ipinaghanda siya ni Levi sa bahay nito ng isang malaking piging. Kasalo nila roon ang maraming maniningil ng buwis at iba pang mga tao. 30 Kaya't nagreklamo sa mga alagad ni Jesus ang mga Fariseo at kanilang mga tagapagturo ng Kautusan. Sinabi nila, “Bakit kayo nakikisalo at umiinom sa piling ng mga maniningil ng buwis at mga makasalanan?” 31 Sumagot sa kanila si Jesus, “Hindi ang malulusog ang nangangailangan sa manggagamot kundi ang mga maysakit. 32 Hindi ako pumarito upang tawaging magsisi ang matutuwid kundi ang mga makasalanan.”

33 Sinabi ng ilan kay Jesus, “Madalas mag-ayuno at manalangin ang mga alagad ni Juan. Gayundin naman ang sa mga Fariseo. Ngunit ang mga alagad mo ay kumakain at umiinom.” 34 Kaya't sinabi sa kanila ni Jesus, “Dapat bang pag-ayunuhin ninyo ang mga abay ng ikakasal habang kapiling nila ang lalaking ikakasal? 35 Ngunit darating din naman ang mga araw kung kailan ilalayo sa kanila ang lalaking ikakasal. Sa mga araw na iyon pa lamang sila mag-aayuno.” 36 At sinabi niya sa kanila ang isang talinghaga, “Walang pumupunit ng bagong damit at ipinantatagpi iyon sa lumang damit. Kung gagawin iyon, masisira ang bago at ang tagping mula sa bago ay hindi babagay sa luma. 37 Wala ring naglalagay ng bagong alak sa lumang sisidlang balat. Papuputukin lamang ng bagong alak ang sisidlang balat. Matatapon lang ang alak at masisira ang sisidlan. 38 Sa halip, dapat ilagay ang bagong alak sa bagong sisidlang balat. 39 At walang sinuman na matapos uminom ng lumang alak ang magnanais ng bagong alak. Sa halip, sasabihin niyang, ‘Mas masarap ang lumang alak.’ ”

5 Nangyari nga, (A)na samantalang siya'y sinisiksik ng karamihan na pinakikinggan ang salita ng Dios, na siya'y nakatayo sa tabi ng dagatdagatan ng Genezaret;
2 (B)At nakakita siya ng dalawang daong na nasa tabi ng dagatdagatan: datapuwa't nagsilunsad sa mga yaon ang mga mamamalakaya, at hinuhugasan ang kanilang mga lambat.
3 At lumulan siya sa isa sa mga daong, na kay Simon, at ipinamanhik niya dito na ilayo ng kaunti sa lupa. At siya'y naupo at nagturo sa mga karamihan (C)buhat sa daong.
4 At pagtigil niya ng pagsasalita, ay sinabi niya kay Simon, (D)Pumaroon ka sa laot, at ihulog ninyo ang inyong mga lambat upang mamalakaya.
5 At sumagot si Simon at sinabi, Guro, sa buong magdamag ay (E)nagsipagpagal kami, at wala kaming nahuli: datapuwa't sa iyong salita ay ihuhulog ko ang mga lambat.
6 At nang magawa nila ito, ay nakahuli sila ng lubhang maraming isda; at nagkampupunit ang kanilang mga lambat;
7 At kinawayan nila ang mga (F)kasamahan (G)sa isang daong upang magsilapit at sila'y tulungan. At sila'y nagsilapit at nangapuno ang dalawang daong, ano pa't sila'y nagpasimulang lulubog.
8 Datapuwa't nang makita ni Simon Pedro, ay nagpatirapa sa mga tuhod ni Jesus, na nagsasabi, (H)Lumayo ka sa akin; sapagka't ako'y taong makasalanan, Oh Panginoon.
9 Sapagka't siya at ang lahat ng kasama niya ay nagsipanggilalas, dahil sa karamihan ng mga isdang kanilang nangahuli:
10 At gayon din si Santiago at si Juan, mga anak ni Zebedeo, na mga kasama ni Simon. At sinabi ni Jesus kay Simon, Huwag kang matakot; mula ngayon ay mamamalakaya ka ng mga tao.
11 At nang maisadsad na nila sa lupa ang kanilang mga daong, ay (I)iniwan nila ang lahat, at nagsisunod sa kaniya.
12 At nangyari, samantalang siya'y (J)nasa isa sa mga bayan, narito, may isang lalake na lipos ng ketong: at nang makita niya si Jesus, ay nagpatirapa siya, at namanhik sa kaniya, na sinasabi, Panginoon, kung ibig mo, ay maaaring linisin mo ako.
13 At iniunat niya ang kaniyang kamay at siya'y hinipo, na sinasabi, Ibig ko; luminis ka. At pagdaka'y nilisan siya ng ketong.
14 At ipinagbilin niya sa kaniya na huwag sabihin kanino man: (K)kundi yumaon ka ng iyong lakad, at pakita ka sa saserdote, at maghandog ka sa pagkalinis sa iyo, alinsunod sa iniutos ni Moises, na pinakapatotoo sa kanila.
15 (L)Datapuwa't lalo nang kumakalat ang balita tungkol sa kaniya: at nangagkatipon ang lubhang maraming tao upang makinig, at upang pagalingin sa kanilang mga sakit.
16 Datapuwa't siya'y lumigpit (M)sa mga ilang, at nananalangin.
17 At nangyari nang isa sa mga araw na yaon, na siya'y nagtuturo; at may nangakaupo doong mga Fariseo at (N)mga guro sa kautusan, na nagsipanggaling sa bawa't nayon ng Galilea at Judea at Jerusalem: at ang kapangyarihan ng Panginoon ay sumasa kaniya upang magpagaling.
18 At narito, (O)dinala ng mga tao na nasa isang higaan ang isang lalaking lumpo: at pinagpipilitan niyang maipasok siya, at ilagay siya sa harap nila.
19 At sa hindi pagkasumpong ng mapagpapasukan, dahil sa karamihan, ay nagsiakyat sila (P)sa bubungan ng bahay, at siya'y inihugos mula sa butas ng bubungan pati ng kaniyang higaan, sa gitna, sa harapan ni Jesus.
20 At pagkakita sa kanilang pananampalataya, ay kaniyang sinabi, Lalake, ipinatatawad sa iyo ang iyong mga kasalanan.
21 At ang mga eskriba at mga Fariseo ay nangagpasimulang mangagkatuwiranan, na nangagsasabi, Sino ito na nagsasalita ng mga kapusungan? (Q)Sino ang makapagpapatawad ng mga kasalanan, kundi ang Dios lamang?
22 Datapuwa't si Jesus, na nakatatanto ng kanilang mga iniisip, ay sumagot at sinabi sa kanila, Bakit pinagbubulaybulay ninyo sa inyong mga puso?
23 Alin baga ang lalong magaang sabihin, Ipinatatawad sa iyo ang iyong mga kasalanan; o sabihin, Magtindig ka at lumakad ka?
24 Datapuwa't upang maalaman ninyo na ang Anak ng tao ay may kapamahalaan sa lupa na magpatawad ng mga kasalanan (sinabi niya sa lumpo), Sa iyo ko sinasabi, Magtindig ka, at buhatin mo ang iyong higaan, at umuwi ka sa bahay mo.
25 At pagdaka'y nagtindig siya sa harap nila, at binuhat (R)ang kaniyang hinigan, at napasa kaniyang bahay, (S)na niluluwalhati ang Dios.
26 At nagsipanggilalas ang lahat at niluwalhati nila ang Dios; at (T)nangapuspos sila ng takot, na nangagsasabi, Nakakita kami ngayon ng mga bagay na katakataka.
27 At pagkatapos ng mga bagay na ito, (U)siya'y umalis, at nakita ang isang maniningil ng buwis, na nagngangalang Levi, na nakaupo sa paningilan ng buwis, at sinabi sa kaniya, Sumunod ka sa akin.
28 At iniwan niya ang lahat at nagtindig at sumunod sa kaniya.
29 At siya'y ipinagpiging ng malaki ni Levi sa kaniyang bahay: at lubhang maraming (V)maniningil ng buwis at mga iba pa na nangakasalo nila sa dulang.
30 At nangagbulongbulungan ang mga Fariseo at ang kanilang mga eskriba laban sa kaniyang mga alagad, na nangagsasabi, Bakit kayo'y nagsisikain at nagsisiinom na kasalo ng mga maniningil ng buwis at ng mga makasalanan?
31 At pagsagot ni Jesus ay sinabi sa kanila, Ang mga walang sakit ay hindi nangangailangan ng manggagamot; kundi ang mga may sakit.
32 (W)Hindi ako pumarito upang tawagin ang mga matuwid, kundi ang mga makasalanan sa pagsisisi.
33 (X)At sinabi (Y)nila sa kaniya, Ang mga alagad ni Juan ay nangagaayunong madalas, at (Z)nagsisigawa ng mga pagdaing; gayon din ang mga alagad ng mga Fariseo; datapuwa't ang mga iyo'y nagsisikain at nagsisiinom.
34 At sinabi ni Jesus sa kanila, Mangyayari bagang papagayunuhin ninyo ang mga abay sa kasalan samantalang ang kasintahang lalake ay kasama nila?
35 (AA)Datapuwa't darating ang mga araw; at pagka inalis sa kanila ang kasintahang lalake, kung magkagayo'y mangagaayuno sila sa mga araw na yaon.
36 At sinalita rin naman niya sa kanila ang isang talinghaga: Walang taong pumilas sa bagong damit at itinagpi sa damit na luma; sa ibang paraa'y sisirain ang bago, at sa luma naman ay hindi bagay ang tagping mula sa bago.
37 At walang taong nagsisilid ng alak na bago sa mga balat na luma; sa ibang paraa'y papuputukin ng alak na bago ang mga balat, at mabububo, masisira ang mga balat.
38 Kundi dapat isilid ang alak na bago sa mga bagong balat.
39 At walang taong nakainom ng alak na laon, ay iibig sa alak na bago; sapagka't sasabihin niya, Mabuti ang laon.

Jesus Calls the First Disciples
5 While the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennes′aret. 2 And he saw two boats by the lake; but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. 3 Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon’s, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. 4 And when he had ceased speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” 5 And Simon answered, “Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” 6 And when they had done this, they enclosed a great shoal of fish; and as their nets were breaking, 7 they beckoned to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” 9 For he was astonished, and all that were with him, at the catch of fish which they had taken; 10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zeb′edee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; henceforth you will be catching men.” 11 And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.
Jesus Cleanses a Leper
12 While he was in one of the cities, there came a man full of leprosy; and when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face and besought him, “Lord, if you will, you can make me clean.” 13 And he stretched out his hand, and touched him, saying, “I will; be clean.” And immediately the leprosy left him. 14 And he charged him to tell no one; but “go and show yourself to the priest, and make an offering for your cleansing, as Moses commanded, for a proof to the people.”[a] 15 But so much the more the report went abroad concerning him; and great multitudes gathered to hear and to be healed of their infirmities. 16 But he withdrew to the wilderness and prayed.
Jesus Heals a Paralytic
17 On one of those days, as he was teaching, there were Pharisees and teachers of the law sitting by, who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea and from Jerusalem; and the power of the Lord was with him to heal.[b] 18 And behold, men were bringing on a bed a man who was paralyzed, and they sought to bring him in and lay him before Jesus;[c] 19 but finding no way to bring him in, because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and let him down with his bed through the tiles into the midst before Jesus. 20 And when he saw their faith he said, “Man, your sins are forgiven you.” 21 And the scribes and the Pharisees began to question, saying, “Who is this that speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God only?” 22 When Jesus perceived their questionings, he answered them, “Why do you question in your hearts? 23 Which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’? 24 But that you may know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—he said to the man who was paralyzed—“I say to you, rise, take up your bed and go home.” 25 And immediately he rose before them, and took up that on which he lay, and went home, glorifying God. 26 And amazement seized them all, and they glorified God and were filled with awe, saying, “We have seen strange things today.”
Jesus Calls Levi
27 After this he went out, and saw a tax collector, named Levi, sitting at the tax office; and he said to him, “Follow me.” 28 And he left everything, and rose and followed him.
29 And Levi made him a great feast in his house; and there was a large company of tax collectors and others sitting at table[d] with them. 30 And the Pharisees and their scribes murmured against his disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?” 31 And Jesus answered them, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick; 32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”
The Question about Fasting
33 And they said to him, “The disciples of John fast often and offer prayers, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours eat and drink.” 34 And Jesus said to them, “Can you make wedding guests fast while the bridegroom is with them? 35 The days will come, when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast in those days.” 36 He told them a parable also: “No one tears a piece from a new garment and puts it upon an old garment; if he does, he will tear the new, and the piece from the new will not match the old. 37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; if he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. 38 But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. 39 And no one after drinking old wine desires new; for he says, ‘The old is good.’”[e]

The First Disciples
5 As the crowd was pressing in on Jesus to hear God’s word,(A) He was standing by Lake Gennesaret.[a](B) 2 He saw two boats at the edge of the lake;[b] the fishermen had left them and were washing their nets. 3 He got into one of the boats,(C) which belonged to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from the land. Then He sat down and was teaching the crowds from the boat.
4 When He had finished speaking, He said to Simon, “Put out into deep water and let down[c] your nets for a catch.”(D)
5 “Master,”(E) Simon replied, “we’ve worked hard all night long and caught nothing! But at Your word, I’ll let down the nets.”[d]
6 When they did this, they caught a great number of fish, and their nets[e] began to tear. 7 So they signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them; they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.
8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, because I’m a sinful man, Lord!” 9 For he and all those with him were amazed[f] at the catch of fish they took, 10 and so were James and John, Zebedee’s sons, who were Simon’s partners.
“Don’t be afraid,”(F) Jesus told Simon. “From now on you will be catching people!”(G) 11 Then they brought the boats to land, left everything, and followed Him.(H)
A Man Cleansed
12 While He was in one of the towns, a man was there who had a serious skin disease all over him.(I) He saw Jesus, fell facedown, and begged Him: “Lord, if You are willing, You can make me clean.”
13 Reaching out His hand, He touched him, saying, “I am willing; be made clean,” and immediately the disease left him. 14 Then He ordered him to tell no one: “But go and show yourself to the priest, and offer what Moses prescribed for your cleansing as a testimony to them.”
15 But the news[g] about Him spread even more, and large crowds would come together to hear Him and to be healed of their sicknesses. 16 Yet He often withdrew to deserted places and prayed.(J)
The Son of Man Forgives and Heals
17 On one of those days while He was teaching, Pharisees and teachers of the law(K) were sitting there who had come from every village of Galilee and Judea, and also from Jerusalem. And the Lord’s power to heal was in Him.(L) 18 Just then some men came,(M) carrying on a mat a man who was paralyzed. They tried to bring him in and set him down before Him. 19 Since they could not find a way to bring him in because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on the mat through the roof tiles into the middle of the crowd before Jesus.
20 Seeing their faith He said, “Friend,[h] your sins are forgiven you.”
21 Then the scribes and the Pharisees(N) began to think: “Who is this man who speaks blasphemies? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”(O)
22 But perceiving their thoughts, Jesus replied to them, “Why are you thinking this in your hearts?[i] 23 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven you,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 24 But so you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins”—He told the paralyzed man, “I tell you: Get up, pick up your mat, and go home.”
25 Immediately he got up before them, picked up what he had been lying on, and went home glorifying God. 26 Then everyone was astounded, and they were giving glory to God. And they were filled with awe(P) and said, “We have seen incredible things today!”
The Call of Matthew
27 After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector named Levi sitting at the tax office,(Q) and He said to him, “Follow Me!” 28 So, leaving everything behind, he got up and began to follow Him.
Dining with Sinners
29 Then Levi hosted a grand banquet for Him at his house. Now there was a large crowd of tax collectors and others who were guests[j] with them.(R) 30 But the Pharisees and their scribes(S) were complaining to His disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”
31 Jesus replied to them, “The healthy don’t need a doctor, but the sick do. 32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”
A Question about Fasting
33 Then they said to Him, “John’s disciples fast often and say prayers, and those of the Pharisees do the same, but Yours eat and drink.”[k]
34 Jesus said to them, “You can’t make the wedding guests[l] fast while the groom is with them, can you? 35 But the time[m] will come(T) when the groom will be taken away from them—then they will fast in those days.”
36 He also told them a parable: “No one tears a patch from a new garment and puts it on an old garment. Otherwise, not only will he tear the new, but also the piece from the new garment will not match the old. 37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins, it will spill, and the skins will be ruined. 38 But new wine should be put into fresh wineskins.[n] 39 And no one, after drinking old wine, wants new, because he says, ‘The old is better.’”[o]

Jesus Calls His First Disciples(A)
5 One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret,[a] the people were crowding around him and listening to the word of God.(B) 2 He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets. 3 He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and taught the people from the boat.(C)
4 When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”(D)
5 Simon answered, “Master,(E) we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught anything.(F) But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”
6 When they had done so, they caught such a large number of fish that their nets began to break.(G) 7 So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both boats so full that they began to sink.
8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a sinful man!”(H) 9 For he and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10 and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners.
Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid;(I) from now on you will fish for people.” 11 So they pulled their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.(J)
Jesus Heals a Man With Leprosy(K)
12 While Jesus was in one of the towns, a man came along who was covered with leprosy.[b](L) When he saw Jesus, he fell with his face to the ground and begged him, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”
13 Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” And immediately the leprosy left him.
14 Then Jesus ordered him, “Don’t tell anyone,(M) but go, show yourself to the priest and offer the sacrifices that Moses commanded(N) for your cleansing, as a testimony to them.”
15 Yet the news about him spread all the more,(O) so that crowds of people came to hear him and to be healed of their sicknesses. 16 But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.(P)
Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man(Q)
17 One day Jesus was teaching, and Pharisees and teachers of the law(R) were sitting there. They had come from every village of Galilee and from Judea and Jerusalem. And the power of the Lord was with Jesus to heal the sick.(S) 18 Some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat and tried to take him into the house to lay him before Jesus. 19 When they could not find a way to do this because of the crowd, they went up on the roof and lowered him on his mat through the tiles into the middle of the crowd, right in front of Jesus.
20 When Jesus saw their faith, he said, “Friend, your sins are forgiven.”(T)
21 The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, “Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?”(U)
22 Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked, “Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? 23 Which is easier: to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up and walk’? 24 But I want you to know that the Son of Man(V) has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” 25 Immediately he stood up in front of them, took what he had been lying on and went home praising God. 26 Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God.(W) They were filled with awe and said, “We have seen remarkable things today.”
Jesus Calls Levi and Eats With Sinners(X)
27 After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at his tax booth. “Follow me,”(Y) Jesus said to him, 28 and Levi got up, left everything and followed him.(Z)
29 Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of tax collectors(AA) and others were eating with them. 30 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law who belonged to their sect(AB) complained to his disciples, “Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners?”(AC)
31 Jesus answered them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”(AD)
Jesus Questioned About Fasting(AE)
33 They said to him, “John’s disciples(AF) often fast and pray, and so do the disciples of the Pharisees, but yours go on eating and drinking.”
34 Jesus answered, “Can you make the friends of the bridegroom(AG) fast while he is with them? 35 But the time will come when the bridegroom will be taken from them;(AH) in those days they will fast.”
36 He told them this parable: “No one tears a piece out of a new garment to patch an old one. Otherwise, they will have torn the new garment, and the patch from the new will not match the old. 37 And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the new wine will burst the skins; the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. 38 No, new wine must be poured into new wineskins. 39 And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for they say, ‘The old is better.’”
