Tentazione nel deserto
4 Gesù, pieno di Spirito Santo, si allontanò dal Giordano e fu condotto dallo Spirito nel deserto 2 dove, per quaranta giorni, fu tentato dal diavolo. Non mangiò nulla in quei giorni; ma quando furono terminati ebbe fame. 3 Allora il diavolo gli disse: «Se tu sei Figlio di Dio, dì a questa pietra che diventi pane». 4 Gesù gli rispose: «Sta scritto: Non di solo pane vivrà l'uomo». 5 Il diavolo lo condusse in alto e, mostrandogli in un istante tutti i regni della terra, gli disse: 6 «Ti darò tutta questa potenza e la gloria di questi regni, perché è stata messa nelle mie mani e io la do a chi voglio. 7 Se ti prostri dinanzi a me tutto sarà tuo». 8 Gesù gli rispose: «Sta scritto: Solo al Signore Dio tuo ti prostrerai, lui solo adorerai». 9 Lo condusse a Gerusalemme, lo pose sul pinnacolo del tempio e gli disse: «Se tu sei Figlio di Dio, buttati giù; 10 sta scritto infatti:
Ai suoi angeli darà ordine per te,
perché essi ti custodiscano;
11 e anche:
essi ti sosterranno con le mani,
perché il tuo piede non inciampi in una pietra».
12 Gesù gli rispose: «E' stato detto: Non tenterai il Signore Dio tuo». 13 Dopo aver esaurito ogni specie di tentazione, il diavolo si allontanò da lui per ritornare al tempo fissato.
III. MINISTERO DI GESU' IN GALILEA
Gesù inaugura la predicazione
14 Gesù ritornò in Galilea con la potenza dello Spirito Santo e la sua fama si diffuse in tutta la regione. 15 Insegnava nelle loro sinagoghe e tutti ne facevano grandi lodi.
Gesù a Nazaret
16 Si recò a Nazaret, dove era stato allevato; ed entrò, secondo il suo solito, di sabato nella sinagoga e si alzò a leggere. 17 Gli fu dato il rotolo del profeta Isaia; apertolo trovò il passo dove era scritto:
18 Lo Spirito del Signore è sopra di me;
per questo mi ha consacrato con l'unzione,
e mi ha mandato per annunziare ai poveri un lieto
messaggio,
per proclamare ai prigionieri la liberazione
e ai ciechi la vista;
per rimettere in libertà gli oppressi,
19 e predicare un anno di grazia del Signore.
20 Poi arrotolò il volume, lo consegnò all'inserviente e sedette. Gli occhi di tutti nella sinagoga stavano fissi sopra di lui. 21 Allora cominciò a dire: «Oggi si è adempiuta questa Scrittura che voi avete udita con i vostri orecchi». 22 Tutti gli rendevano testimonianza ed erano meravigliati delle parole di grazia che uscivano dalla sua bocca e dicevano: «Non è il figlio di Giuseppe?». 23 Ma egli rispose: «Di certo voi mi citerete il proverbio: Medico, cura te stesso. Quanto abbiamo udito che accadde a Cafarnao, fàllo anche qui, nella tua patria!». 24 Poi aggiunse: «Nessun profeta è bene accetto in patria. 25 Vi dico anche: c'erano molte vedove in Israele al tempo di Elia, quando il cielo fu chiuso per tre anni e sei mesi e ci fu una grande carestia in tutto il paese; 26 ma a nessuna di esse fu mandato Elia, se non a una vedova in Sarepta di Sidone. 27 C'erano molti lebbrosi in Israele al tempo del profeta Eliseo, ma nessuno di loro fu risanato se non Naaman, il Siro».
28 All'udire queste cose, tutti nella sinagoga furono pieni di sdegno; 29 si levarono, lo cacciarono fuori della città e lo condussero fin sul ciglio del monte sul quale la loro città era situata, per gettarlo giù dal precipizio. 30 Ma egli, passando in mezzo a loro, se ne andò.
Gesù insegna a Cafarnao e guarisce un indemoniato
31 Poi discese a Cafarnao, una città della Galilea, e al sabato ammaestrava la gente. 32 Rimanevano colpiti dal suo insegnamento, perché parlava con autorità. 33 Nella sinagoga c'era un uomo con un demonio immondo e cominciò a gridare forte: 34 «Basta! Che abbiamo a che fare con te, Gesù Nazareno? Sei venuto a rovinarci? So bene chi sei: il Santo di Dio!». 35 Gesù gli intimò: «Taci, esci da costui!». Eil demonio, gettatolo a terra in mezzo alla gente, uscì da lui, senza fargli alcun male. 36 Tutti furono presi da paura e si dicevano l'un l'altro: «Che parola è mai questa, che comanda con autorità e potenza agli spiriti immondi ed essi se ne vanno?». 37 E si diffondeva la fama di lui in tutta la regione.
Guarigione della suocera di Simone
38 Uscito dalla sinagoga entrò nella casa di Simone. La suocera di Simone era in preda a una grande febbre e lo pregarono per lei. 39 Chinatosi su di lei, intimò alla febbre, e la febbre la lasciò. Levatasi all'istante, la donna cominciò a servirli.
Molte guarigioni
40 Al calar del sole, tutti quelli che avevano infermi colpiti da mali di ogni genere li condussero a lui. Ed egli, imponendo su ciascuno le mani, li guariva. 41 Da molti uscivano demòni gridando: «Tu sei il Figlio di Dio!». Ma egli li minacciava e non li lasciava parlare, perché sapevano che era il Cristo.
Gesù abbandona in segreto Cafarnao e percorre la Giudea
42 Sul far del giorno uscì e si recò in un luogo deserto. Ma le folle lo cercavano, lo raggiunsero e volevano trattenerlo perché non se ne andasse via da loro. 43 Egli però disse: «Bisogna che io annunzi il regno di Dio anche alle altre città; per questo sono stato mandato». 44 E andava predicando nelle sinagoghe della Giudea.

Jesús es tentado
4 (A)Jesús, lleno del Espíritu Santo, volvió del Jordán(B) y fue llevado por el[a] Espíritu en el desierto 2 por cuarenta días, siendo tentado por el diablo. Y no comió nada durante esos días(C), pasados los cuales tuvo hambre.
3 Entonces el diablo le dijo: «Si eres Hijo de Dios, dile a esta piedra que se convierta en pan». 4 Jesús le respondió: «Escrito está: “No solo de pan vivirá el hombre[b](D)”».
5 El diablo lo llevó a una altura(E), y le mostró en un instante todos los reinos del mundo[c](F). 6 «Todo este dominio y su gloria te daré», le dijo el diablo; «pues a mí me ha sido entregado(G), y a quien quiero se lo doy. 7 Por tanto, si te postras delante de mí, todo será Tuyo».
8 Jesús le respondió: «Escrito está: “Al Señor tu Dios adorarás, y a Él solo servirás(H)”».
9 Entonces el diablo lo llevó a Jerusalén y lo puso sobre el pináculo del templo, y le dijo: «Si eres Hijo de Dios, lánzate abajo desde aquí(I), 10 pues escrito está:
“A Sus ángeles te encomendará para que te guarden(J)”,
11 y:
“En las manos te llevarán,
Para que Tu pie no tropiece en piedra(K)”».
12 Jesús le respondió: «Se ha dicho: “No tentarás al Señor tu Dios(L)”».
13 Cuando el diablo hubo acabado toda tentación, se alejó de Él esperando[d] un tiempo oportuno.
Ministerio en Galilea
14 Jesús regresó a Galilea(M) en el poder del Espíritu, y las nuevas[e] acerca de Él se divulgaron por toda aquella región(N). 15 Y enseñaba en sus sinagogas(O), siendo alabado por todos.
Jesús en Nazaret
16 Jesús llegó a Nazaret, donde había sido criado(P), y según Su costumbre, entró en la sinagoga(Q) el día de reposo, y se levantó a leer(R). 17 Le dieron el libro[f] del profeta Isaías, y abriendo el libro, halló el lugar donde estaba escrito:
18 «El Espíritu del Señor está sobre Mí,
Porque me ha ungido para anunciar el evangelio a los pobres.
Me ha enviado[g] para proclamar libertad a los cautivos,
Y la recuperación de la vista a los ciegos;
Para poner en libertad a los oprimidos(S) ;
19 Para proclamar el año favorable del Señor(T) ».
20 Cerrando el libro[h](U), lo devolvió al asistente y se sentó(V); y los ojos de todos en la sinagoga estaban fijos en Él. 21 Y comenzó a decirles: «Hoy se ha cumplido esta Escritura que han oído[i]». 22 Todos hablaban bien[j] de Él y se maravillaban de las palabras llenas de gracia que salían de Su boca, y decían: «¿No es este el hijo de José(W)?».
23 Entonces Él les dijo: «Sin duda me citarán este refrán: “Médico, cúrate a ti mismo; esto es, todo lo que oímos que se ha hecho en Capernaúm(X), hazlo también aquí en Tu tierra(Y)”». 24 Y Jesús añadió: «En verdad les digo, que ningún profeta es bien recibido en su propia tierra(Z). 25 Pero en verdad les digo, que muchas viudas había en Israel en los días de Elías, cuando el cielo fue cerrado por tres años y seis meses(AA)y cuando hubo gran hambre sobre toda la tierra; 26 sin embargo, a ninguna de ellas fue enviado Elías, sino a una mujer viuda en Sarepta, en la tierra de Sidón(AB). 27 Muchos leprosos había en Israel en tiempos del profeta Eliseo, pero ninguno de ellos fue limpiado, sino Naamán el sirio(AC)».
28 Y todos en la sinagoga se llenaron de ira cuando oyeron estas cosas, 29 y levantándose, echaron a Jesús fuera de la ciudad(AD), y lo llevaron hasta la cumbre del monte sobre el cual estaba edificada su ciudad para tirar a Jesús desde allí. 30 Pero Él, pasando por en medio de ellos(AE), se fue.
Jesús enseña en Capernaúm
31 Jesús descendió a Capernaúm(AF), ciudad de Galilea, (AG)y les enseñaba en los días de reposo. 32 Todos se admiraban de Su enseñanza(AH) porque Su mensaje[k] era con autoridad(AI). 33 Y había en la sinagoga un hombre poseído por el espíritu[l] de un demonio inmundo, y gritó a gran voz: 34 «Déjanos. ¿Qué tienes que ver con nosotros[m](AJ), Jesús de Nazaret[n]? ¿Has venido a destruirnos? Yo sé quién Tú eres: el Santo de Dios(AK)».
35 Jesús entonces lo reprendió(AL), diciendo: «¡Cállate y sal de él!». Y después que el demonio lo derribó en medio de ellos, salió de él sin hacerle ningún daño. 36 Todos se quedaron asombrados[o], y discutían entre sí: «¿Qué mensaje es este? Porque[p] con autoridad(AM) y poder manda a los espíritus inmundos y salen». 37 Y Su fama[q] se divulgaba por todos los lugares de aquella región(AN).
Jesús sana a la suegra de Simón y a muchos otros
38 (AO)Levantándose, Jesús salió de la sinagoga y entró en casa de Simón. La suegra de Simón se hallaba sufriendo con una fiebre muy alta(AP), y le rogaron por ella. 39 Inclinándose sobre ella, Jesús reprendió(AQ) la fiebre y la fiebre la dejó; al instante ella se levantó y les servía.
40 (AR)Al ponerse el sol, todos los que tenían enfermos de diversas enfermedades(AS) se los llevaban a Él; y poniendo las manos(AT) sobre cada uno de ellos, los sanaba(AU). 41 También de muchos salían demonios, gritando: «¡Tú eres el Hijo de Dios(AV)!». Pero, reprendiéndolos(AW), no les permitía hablar, porque sabían que Él era el Cristo[r](AX).
Jesús recorre otras ciudades
42 (AY)Cuando se hizo de día, Jesús salió y se fue a un lugar solitario. Las multitudes lo buscaban, y llegaron adonde Él estaba y procuraban detener a Jesús para que no se separara de ellos. 43 Pero Él les dijo: «También a las otras ciudades debo anunciar las buenas nuevas[s]del reino de Dios, porque para esto(AZ)Yo he sido enviado».
44 Y predicaba en las sinagogas de los judíos[t](BA).

Jesus Is Tempted by the Devil.[a] 1 Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the desert 2 for forty days, where he was tempted by the devil. During that time he ate nothing, and at the end of it he was famished.
3 The devil said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command this stone to be transformed into bread.” 4 Jesus answered him: “As it states in Scripture:
‘Man does not live by bread alone.’ ”
5 Then the devil led him up and showed him in a single instant all the kingdoms of the world, 6 saying to him, “To you will I give all this dominion with its accompanying glory, for it has been delivered into my power, and I can bestow it on whomever I choose. 7 All this will be yours if you worship me.” 8 Jesus answered him: “Scripture says:
‘You shall worship the Lord your God,
and him alone shall you serve.’ ”
9 Next the devil led him to Jerusalem and had him stand on the summit of the temple. Then he said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here, 10 for according to Scripture:
‘He will command his angels concerning you,
to protect you,’
11 and:
‘With their hands they will raise you up
lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ”
12 Jesus answered him, “Scripture says:
‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ”
13 When the devil had ended all his tempting, he departed from him until an opportune time.
The Ministry of Jesus in Galilee[b]
14 Jesus Is Accepted throughout Galilee. Then Jesus, filled with the power of the Spirit, returned to Galilee, and reports about him began to spread throughout the surrounding region. 15 He taught in their synagogues and was praised by everyone.
16 Jesus at Nazareth.[c]When he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath day, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17 and they handed him the scroll of the prophet Isaiah. Unrolling the scroll, he found the passage where it is written:
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to bring the good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim release to prisoners
and recovery of sight to the blind,
to let the oppressed go free,
19 and to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
20 Then he rolled up the scroll, returned it to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed intently on him.
21 Then he began by saying to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 All present spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that flowed from his lips. They also asked, “Is this not the son of Joseph?”
23 He said to them, “Undoubtedly you will quote to me the proverb: ‘Physician, heal yourself,’ and say: ‘Do here in your hometown[d] the deeds we have heard that you performed in Capernaum.’ 24 Amen, I say to you,” he went on, “no prophet is accepted in his own country.
25 [e]“I tell you in truth, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah when the skies remained closed for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land. 26 Yet it was to none of them that Elijah was sent, but to a widow at Zarephath in the land of Sidon. 27 There were also many people with leprosy in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha, but not one of these was cleansed except for Naaman the Syrian.”
28 When they heard these words, all the people in the synagogue were roused to fury.[f] 29 They leapt up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the top of the hill upon which their town was built, intending to hurl him off the cliff. 30 However, he passed through the midst of the crowd and went on his way.
31 Jesus Heals a Man with a Demon.[g]Jesus then went to Capernaum, a town in Galilee, and began to teach the people on the Sabbath. 32 They were astounded at his teaching because his message had authority.
33 In the synagogue there was a man possessed by the spirit of an unclean demon, and he shrieked loudly, 34 “Leave us alone! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.”[h] 35 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him!”
Then the demon threw the man down in front of them and emerged from him without doing him any harm. 36 The people were all amazed, and they said to one another: “What is this teaching? For with authority and power he gives commands to unclean spirits, and they come forth.” 37 And reports about him began to spread throughout the entire region.
38 Jesus Heals Peter’s Mother-in-Law. On leaving the synagogue, he entered Simon’s house. Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever, and they begged him to help her. 39 Jesus stood over her and rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up immediately and began to serve them.
40 Jesus Ministers throughout Galilee. At sunset they brought to him all those who were sick with various diseases. He laid his hands on each of them and healed them. 41 Demons also emerged from many people, shouting, “You are the Son of God!” But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak because they knew that he was the Christ.
42 Jesus Is the Envoy of God for All Israel.[i] At daybreak he departed and made his way to a secluded place. But the crowds went forth in search of him, and when they located him, they tried to prevent him from leaving there. 43 However, he said to them, “I must preach the kingdom of God to the other towns as well, because this was the purpose for which I was sent.” 44 Thus, he continued to preach in the synagogues of Judea.

- Luke 4:1 By means of images, we are shown the drama Jesus experienced in his conscience, his struggle to follow with determination the great options of his existence. He knows the temptations for immediate success, domination, and prestige, the temptations to which Israel succumbed during its sojourn in the desert and that remain the lot of the Church, every believer, and every person. Jesus refuses to use his powers for his own benefit but accepts poverty and destitution; he does not seek the glory of a political Messiah and does not yield to the idols of power. He turns away from the seduction of prestige; when he goes to Jerusalem it will not be to mount the pinnacle of the temple but to carry the supreme trial of the cross.
There is, in this choice without compromise, a radical recognition of God and the true values he is forever giving us to reflect upon. The victory of Christ over the forces of evil foreshadows the power of his mission (see Lk 10:18; 11:22; 12:16), which is achieved through patience on the cross and the triumph of the Resurrection after the final attacks of the spirit of evil (see Lk 22:3, 53). To live with Christ is to accept this struggle humbly and resolutely. - Luke 4:14 The Gospel does not try to reconstitute an exact chronology and geography of the life of Christ. Its intention is to present to us the sayings and actions of the Lord, to arouse and renew our faith in him, and to make us grasp the essential requirements of our existence. As in Matthew and Mark, the first stage of Jesus’ mission, which takes place in Galilee, leads to the recognition of Jesus as it moves from the first question about him to the profession of faith.
- Luke 4:16 By reading his own vocation and mission in the great passage from Isaiah (61:1), Jesus will direct the thinking of the Church and every apostle: God’s work is to proclaim salvation to the poor and the oppressed.

- Luke 4:25 These verses illustrate the theme of universal salvation, so dear to Luke, with allusions to the miracles of Elijah and Elisha (1 Ki 17; 2 Ki 5).
- Luke 4:28 The words of Jesus hinted at the rejection of the people of Israel and the election of the Gentiles. The people of Nazareth become infuriated, but Jesus escapes their fury in a mysterious manner.
- Luke 4:31 In the Gospel, the accounts of miracles are intended to attest, first of all, that God the Savior is present for people in Jesus Christ. There is a sensible and visible evil in the sickness, wherein we see hostile forces at work. Christ brings healing; he changes the condition of human beings and saves them from alienation. Demons are sharper than humans in penetrating the divine powers of him who frees humans from the grip of death. However, Jesus reduces them to silence, because he does not want people to regard him as a triumphant liberator but to discover, in his words and actions as man amidst his human brothers and sisters, the true visage of the Messiah, Son of God.
