Nascita di Gesú a Betlemme
2 (A)In quel tempo uscí un decreto da parte di *Cesare Augusto, che ordinava il censimento di tutto l'impero. 2 Questo fu il primo censimento fatto quando Quirinio era governatore della *Siria. 3 Tutti andavano a farsi registrare, ciascuno alla sua città.
4 Dalla *Galilea, dalla città di *Nazaret, anche *Giuseppe salí in *Giudea, alla città di *Davide chiamata *Betlemme, perché era della casa e famiglia di Davide, 5 per farsi registrare con *Maria, sua sposa, che era incinta.
6 Mentre erano là, si compí per lei il tempo del parto; 7 ed ella diede alla luce il suo figlio primogenito, lo fasciò, e lo coricò in una mangiatoia, perché non c'era posto per loro nell'albergo.
8 (B)In quella stessa regione c'erano dei pastori che stavano nei campi e di notte facevano la guardia al loro gregge. 9 E un angelo del Signore si presentò a loro e la gloria del Signore risplendé intorno a loro, e furono presi da gran timore. 10 L'angelo disse loro: «Non temete, perché io vi porto la buona notizia di una grande gioia che tutto il popolo avrà: 11 “Oggi, nella città di Davide, è nato per voi un Salvatore, che è il Cristo, il Signore. 12 E questo vi servirà di segno: troverete un bambino avvolto in fasce e coricato in una mangiatoia”».
13 E a un tratto vi fu con l'angelo una moltitudine dell'esercito celeste, che lodava Dio e diceva:
14 «Gloria a Dio nei luoghi altissimi, e pace in terra agli uomini ch'egli gradisce!»
15 Quando gli angeli se ne furono andati verso il cielo, i pastori dicevano tra di loro: «Andiamo fino a Betlemme e vediamo ciò che è avvenuto, e che il Signore ci ha fatto sapere». 16 Andarono in fretta, e trovarono Maria e Giuseppe e il bambino, adagiato nella mangiatoia; 17 e, vedutolo, divulgarono quello che era stato loro detto di quel bambino. 18 E tutti quelli che li udirono si meravigliarono delle cose dette loro dai pastori. 19 Maria serbava in sé tutte queste cose, meditandole in cuor suo. 20 E i pastori tornarono indietro, glorificando e lodando Dio per tutto quello che avevano udito e visto, com'era stato loro annunziato.
Presentazione di Gesú al tempio
21 (C)Quando furono compiuti gli otto giorni dopo i quali egli doveva essere circonciso, gli fu messo il nome di Gesú, che gli era stato dato dall'angelo prima che egli fosse concepito. 22 Quando furono compiuti i giorni della loro purificazione secondo la legge di *Mosè, portarono il bambino a *Gerusalemme per presentarlo al Signore, 23 come è scritto nella legge del Signore: «Ogni maschio primogenito sarà consacrato al Signore[a]»; 24 e per offrire il sacrificio di cui parla la legge del Signore[b], di un paio di tortore o di due giovani colombi.
Adorazione di Simeone e di Anna
25 (D)Vi era in Gerusalemme un uomo di nome *Simeone; quest'uomo era giusto e timorato di Dio, e aspettava la consolazione d'*Israele; lo Spirito Santo era sopra di lui; 26 e gli era stato rivelato dallo Spirito Santo che non sarebbe morto prima di aver visto il Cristo del Signore. 27 Egli, mosso dallo Spirito, andò nel *tempio; e, come i genitori vi portavano il bambino Gesú per adempiere a suo riguardo le prescrizioni della legge, 28 lo prese in braccio, e benedisse Dio, dicendo:
29 «Ora, o mio Signore, tu lasci andare in pace il tuo servo,
secondo la tua parola;
30 perché i miei occhi hanno visto la tua salvezza,
31 che hai preparata dinanzi a tutti i popoli
32 per essere luce da illuminare le genti
e gloria del tuo popolo Israele».
33 Il padre e la madre di Gesú restavano meravigliati delle cose che si dicevano di lui. 34 E Simeone li benedisse, dicendo a Maria, madre di lui: «Ecco, egli è posto a caduta e a rialzamento di molti in Israele, come segno di contraddizione 35 (e a te stessa una spada trafiggerà l'anima), affinché i pensieri di molti cuori siano svelati».
36 Vi era anche *Anna, profetessa, figlia di Fanuel, della tribú di *Aser. Era molto avanti negli anni: dopo essere vissuta con il marito sette anni dalla sua verginità, era rimasta vedova e aveva raggiunto gli ottantaquattro anni. 37 Non si allontanava mai dal tempio e serviva Dio notte e giorno con digiuni e preghiere. 38 Sopraggiunta in quella stessa ora, anche lei lodava Dio e parlava del bambino a tutti quelli che aspettavano la redenzione di Gerusalemme.
Ritorno a Nazaret
39 (E)Com'ebbero adempiuto tutte le prescrizioni della legge del Signore, tornarono in Galilea, a Nazaret, loro città.
40 E il bambino cresceva e si fortificava; era pieno di sapienza e la grazia di Dio era su di lui.
Gesú dodicenne al tempio
41 (F)I suoi genitori andavano ogni anno a Gerusalemme per la *festa di Pasqua.
42 Quando giunse all'età di dodici anni, salirono a Gerusalemme, secondo l'usanza della festa; 43 passati i giorni della festa, mentre tornavano, il bambino Gesú rimase in Gerusalemme all'insaputa dei genitori; 44 i quali, pensando che egli fosse nella comitiva, camminarono una giornata, poi si misero a cercarlo tra i parenti e i conoscenti; 45 e, non avendolo trovato, tornarono a Gerusalemme cercandolo. 46 Tre giorni dopo lo trovarono nel tempio, seduto in mezzo ai maestri: li ascoltava e faceva loro delle domande; 47 e tutti quelli che l'udivano, si stupivano del suo senno e delle sue risposte. 48 Quando i suoi genitori lo videro, rimasero stupiti; e sua madre gli disse: «Figlio, perché ci hai fatto cosí? Ecco, tuo padre e io ti cercavamo, stando in gran pena». 49 Ed egli disse loro: «Perché mi cercavate? Non sapevate che io dovevo trovarmi nella casa del Padre mio[c]?» 50 Ed essi non capirono le parole che egli aveva dette loro. 51 Poi discese con loro, andò a Nazaret, e stava loro sottomesso. Sua madre serbava tutte queste cose nel suo cuore.
52 E Gesú cresceva in sapienza, in statura e in grazia davanti a Dio e agli uomini.

The Birth of Jesus
2 In those days Caesar Augustus(A) issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world.(B) 2 (This was the first census that took place while[a] Quirinius was governor of Syria.)(C) 3 And everyone went to their own town to register.
4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem(D) the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him(E) and was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, 7 and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because there was no guest room available for them.
8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel(F) of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid.(G) I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior(H) has been born to you; he is the Messiah,(I) the Lord.(J) 12 This will be a sign(K) to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”
13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,
14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,
and on earth peace(L) to those on whom his favor rests.”
15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”
16 So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger.(M) 17 When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, 18 and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. 19 But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.(N) 20 The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God(O) for all the things they had heard and seen, which were just as they had been told.
21 On the eighth day, when it was time to circumcise the child,(P) he was named Jesus, the name the angel had given him before he was conceived.(Q)
Jesus Presented in the Temple
22 When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses,(R) Joseph and Mary took him to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord”[b]),(S) 24 and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: “a pair of doves or two young pigeons.”[c](T)
25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout.(U) He was waiting for the consolation of Israel,(V) and the Holy Spirit was on him. 26 It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. 27 Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required,(W) 28 Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:
29 “Sovereign Lord, as you have promised,(X)
you may now dismiss[d] your servant in peace.(Y)
30 For my eyes have seen your salvation,(Z)
31 which you have prepared in the sight of all nations:
32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and the glory of your people Israel.”(AA)
33 The child’s father and mother marveled at what was said about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother:(AB) “This child is destined to cause the falling(AC) and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35 so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”
36 There was also a prophet,(AD) Anna, the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, 37 and then was a widow until she was eighty-four.[e](AE) She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying.(AF) 38 Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem.(AG)
39 When Joseph and Mary had done everything required by the Law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth.(AH) 40 And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him.(AI)
The Boy Jesus at the Temple
41 Every year Jesus’ parents went to Jerusalem for the Festival of the Passover.(AJ) 42 When he was twelve years old, they went up to the festival, according to the custom. 43 After the festival was over, while his parents were returning home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but they were unaware of it. 44 Thinking he was in their company, they traveled on for a day. Then they began looking for him among their relatives and friends. 45 When they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem to look for him. 46 After three days they found him in the temple courts, sitting among the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 Everyone who heard him was amazed(AK) at his understanding and his answers. 48 When his parents saw him, they were astonished. His mother(AL) said to him, “Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father(AM) and I have been anxiously searching for you.”
49 “Why were you searching for me?” he asked. “Didn’t you know I had to be in my Father’s house?”[f](AN) 50 But they did not understand what he was saying to them.(AO)
51 Then he went down to Nazareth with them(AP) and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart.(AQ) 52 And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.(AR)

Jesus föds i Betlehem
2 Vid den tiden beslutade den romerske kejsaren Augustus att alla innevånare i landet skulle registreras, så man kunde beskatta dem.
2 Detta gjordes när Quirinius var landshövding i Syrien.
3 Var och en fick då resa till sin hemstad för att registrera sig.
4 Eftersom Josef tillhörde den kungliga släkten måste han resa från staden Nasaret i Galileen till Betlehem i Judeen, kung Davids stad.
5 Han tog med sig Maria, sin trolovade, som nu väntade barn.
6 Medan de var i Betlehem blev det dags för henne att föda,
7 och hon fick en pojke. Hon svepte om honom och lade honom i en krubba, för det fanns inte plats för dem i värdshuset.
Några herdar besöker Jesus
8 Samma natt var några herdar ute på fälten utanför staden och vaktade sina får.
9 Plötsligt stod en ängel framför dem, och Guds härlighet lyste omkring dem. De blev fruktansvärt rädda,
10 men ängeln lugnade dem.Var inte rädda!, sa han. Jag kommer till er med en fantastisk nyhet, och den gäller alla!
11 I natt har Frälsaren fötts i Betlehem. Han är Messias, Herren.
12 Ni kommer att känna igen honom på att han är lindad och ligger i en krubba.
13 Plötsligt var ängeln omgiven av en himmelsk armé av änglar som lovprisade Gud.
14 Ära ske Gud i höjden, sjöng de, och fred på jorden bland människor som han älskar.
15 När alla änglar hade farit ifrån dem upp till himlen, sa herdarna till varandra: Kom! Nu går vi till Betlehem! Vi måste se det fantastiska som hänt och som Herren har låtit oss få veta!
16 De sprang in till staden, och hittade Maria och Josef och barnet i krubban.
17 Herdarna berättade för alla vad de varit med om, och vad ängeln sagt om barnet.
18 Alla häpnade över herdarnas ord,
19 men Maria behöll allt som hänt för sig själv. Hon lade det noga på minnet och tänkte ofta på det.
20 Herdarna vände sedan tillbaka till sina får. De tackade Gud för allt de hade fått se och höra, precis som ängeln hade sagt.
Maria och Josef tar med Jesus till templet
21 Åtta dagar senare när pojken omskars, fick han namnet Jesus, det namn som ängeln gav honom innan han ens blivit till.
22 När tiden för föräldrarnas rening var över tog de med honom till Jerusalem för att bära fram honom inför Herren, så som det föreskrivs i Moses lag.
23 Där har nämligen Gud befallt att om en kvinnas första barn är en pojke, ska han överlåtas åt Herren.
24 Samtidigt bar föräldrarna fram det reningsoffer, ett par turturduvor eller två unga duvor, som lagen föreskrev.
25 Just den dagen var Symeon, en man från Jerusalem, i templet. Han var en god och gudfruktig man, fylld av den helige Ande, och han väntade ständigt på att Messias skulle komma.
26 Den helige Ande hade nämligen gjort klart för honom att han inte skulle dö förrän han hade sett Messias, Guds utvalde kung.
27 Och den helige Ande hade uppmanat honom att gå till templet just den dagen. När Maria och Josef kom för att bära fram Jesus inför Herren enligt lagens bud,
28 var alltså Symeon där. Han tog då barnet i sina armar och tackade Gud.
29-31 Herre, sa han, nu kan jag dö i frid! Jag har sett honom som du lovade att jag skulle få se, Frälsaren, som du har gett till världen.
32 Han är det ljus som ska lysa för alla folk, och han ska ge ära åt ditt folk Israel.
33 Josef och Maria var mycket förvånade över vad han sa om Jesus.
34-35 Symeon välsignade dem, och sa sedan till Maria: Ett svärd kommer att genomborra din själ, för många i Israel kommer att stöta bort detta barn, och det ska bli deras fördärv. Men för många ska han bli till stor glädje. Och många människors hemligaste tankar ska komma i dagen.
36-37 En gammal kvinna, som hette Hanna och som hade profetisk gåva, var också i templet. Hon var dotter till Fanuel från Asers stam. Efter att i sin ungdom ha varit gift i sju år, levde hon nu som änka. Hon var åttiofyra år, och hon lämnade aldrig templet, utan var där dag och natt och tjänade Gud genom att be och fasta.
38 Just när Symeon samtalade med Maria och Josef kom hon dit, och hon började tacka och lovprisa Gud. Hon berättade öppet för alla som väntade på Jerusalems befrielse att Messias hade kommit.
39 När föräldrarna hade gjort allt det som Guds lag föreskrev, återvände de till sin hemstad Nasaret i Galileen.
40 Där växte Jesus upp, och han blev känd för att vara ovanligt förståndig för sin ålder. Och Guds välsignelse vilade över honom.
Jesus samtalar med präster och lärare i templet
41-42 När Jesus var tolv år gammal följde han med sina föräldrar till Jerusalem, till den årliga påskhögtiden som de varje år brukade delta i.
43 När högtidsdagarna var över och de skulle fara hem igen stannade Jesus kvar i Jerusalem.Hans föräldrar saknade honom inte den första dagen,
44 för de trodde att han var tillsammans med sina kamrater i ressällskapet. Men när kvällen kom och de inte såg till honom började de söka efter honom bland släktingar och vänner.
45 Och när de inte kunde hitta honom, vände de tillbaka till Jerusalem för att leta efter honom där.
46-47 När de hade letat efter honom i tre dagar hittade de honom till sist i templet. Där satt han mitt ibland lärarna och lyssnade och ställde frågor. Alla som hörde på blev förbluffade över hur förståndig han var och över de svar han gav.
48 Hans föräldrar visste inte vad de skulle säga när de såg honom sitta där helt lugnt. Men Jesus, sa Maria, hur kunde du göra så mot oss? Vi har varit förtvivlade och letat efter dig överallt!
49 Men varför har ni letat efter mig? frågade han. Förstår ni inte att jag måste vara i templet, i min fars hus?
50 Men de begrep inte vad han menade.
51 Sedan följde han med dem hem till Nasaret, och han lydde dem på alla sätt. Men hans mor tänkte ofta på allt som hade hänt.
52 Och Jesus växte upp och blev stark och fick mer och mer visdom, och både Gud och människor älskade honom.

40 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him.

43 And when they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it.
44 But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's journey; and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance.
45 And when they found him not, they turned back again to Jerusalem, seeking him.
46 And it came to pass, that after three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions.
47 And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers.
48 And when they saw him, they were amazed: and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us? behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing.
49 And he said unto them, How is it that ye sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?
50 And they understood not the saying which he spake unto them.
51 And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them: but his mother kept all these sayings in her heart.
52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.
