Pilda ispravnicului necredincios
16 Isus a mai spus ucenicilor Săi: „Un om bogat avea un ispravnic, care a fost pârât la el că-i risipeşte averea. 2 El l-a chemat şi i-a zis: ‘Ce aud eu vorbindu-se despre tine? Dă-ţi socoteală de isprăvnicia ta, pentru că nu mai poţi fi ispravnic.’ 3 Ispravnicul şi-a zis: ‘Ce am să fac dacă îmi ia stăpânul isprăvnicia? Să sap, nu pot; să cerşesc, mi-e ruşine. 4 Ştiu ce am să fac, pentru ca, atunci când voi fi scos din isprăvnicie, ei să mă primească în casele lor.’ 5 A chemat pe fiecare din datornicii stăpânului său şi a zis celui dintâi: ‘Cât eşti dator stăpânului meu?’ 6 ‘O sută de măsuri de untdelemn’, a răspuns el. Şi i-a zis: ‘Ia-ţi zapisul şi şezi degrabă de scrie cincizeci’. 7 Apoi a zis altuia: ‘Dar tu cât eşti dator?’ ‘O sută de măsuri de grâu’, a răspuns el. Şi i-a zis: ‘Ia-ţi zapisul şi scrie optzeci’. 8 Stăpânul lui a lăudat pe ispravnicul nedrept, pentru că lucrase înţelepţeşte. Căci fiii veacului acestuia, faţă de semenii lor, sunt mai înţelepţi decât fiii(A) luminii. 9 Şi Eu vă zic: Faceţi-vă(B) prieteni cu ajutorul bogăţiilor nedrepte, pentru ca, atunci când veţi muri, să vă primească în corturile veşnice. 10 Cine(C) este credincios în cele mai mici lucruri este credincios şi în cele mari şi cine este nedrept în cele mai mici lucruri este nedrept şi în cele mari. 11 Deci, dacă n-aţi fost credincioşi în bogăţiile[a] nedrepte, cine vă va încredinţa adevăratele bogăţii? 12 Şi dacă n-aţi fost credincioşi în lucrul altuia, cine vă va da ce este al vostru? 13 Nicio(D) slugă nu poate sluji la doi stăpâni; căci sau va urî pe unul şi va iubi pe celălalt, sau va ţine numai la unul şi va nesocoti pe celălalt. Nu puteţi sluji lui Dumnezeu şi lui Mamona.”
Mustrări făcute fariseilor
14 Fariseii, care(E) erau iubitori de bani, ascultau şi ei toate lucrurile acestea şi îşi băteau joc de El. 15 Isus le-a zis: „Voi căutaţi să vă arătaţi(F) neprihăniţi înaintea oamenilor, dar Dumnezeu(G) vă cunoaşte inimile; pentru că ce(H) este înălţat între oameni este o urâciune înaintea lui Dumnezeu. 16 Legea(I) şi prorocii au ţinut până la Ioan; de atunci încoace, Evanghelia Împărăţiei lui Dumnezeu se propovăduieşte: şi fiecare, ca să intre în ea, dă năvală. 17 Este(J) mai lesne să treacă cerul şi pământul decât să cadă o singură frântură de slovă din Lege. 18 Oricine(K) îşi lasă nevasta şi ia pe alta de nevastă preacurveşte şi cine ia de nevastă pe cea lăsată de bărbatul ei preacurveşte.”

19 „Era un om bogat, care se îmbrăca în porfiră şi in subţire şi în fiecare zi ducea o viaţă plină de veselie şi strălucire. 20 La uşa lui, zăcea un sărac numit Lazăr, plin de bube. 21 Şi dorea mult să se sature cu firimiturile care cădeau de la masa bogatului; până şi câinii veneau şi-i lingeau bubele. 22 Cu vremea, săracul a murit şi a fost dus de îngeri în sânul lui Avraam. A murit şi bogatul şi l-au îngropat. 23 Pe când era el în Locuinţa morţilor, în chinuri, şi-a ridicat ochii în sus, a văzut de departe pe Avraam şi pe Lazăr în sânul lui 24 şi a strigat: ‘Părinte Avraame, fie-ţi milă de mine şi trimite pe Lazăr să-şi înmoaie vârful degetului în apă şi să-mi răcorească(L) limba, căci grozav sunt(M) chinuit în văpaia aceasta’. 25 ‘Fiule’, i-a răspuns Avraam, ‘adu-ţi(N) aminte că, în viaţa ta, tu ţi-ai luat lucrurile bune, şi Lazăr şi-a luat pe cele rele; acum, aici, el este mângâiat, iar tu eşti chinuit. 26 Pe lângă toate acestea, între noi şi între voi este o prăpastie mare, aşa ca cei ce ar vrea să treacă de aici la voi sau de acolo la noi să nu poată.’ 27 Bogatul a zis: ‘Rogu-te dar, părinte Avraame, să trimiţi pe Lazăr în casa tatălui meu, 28 căci am cinci fraţi şi să le adeverească aceste lucruri, ca să nu vină şi ei în acest loc de chin’. 29 Avraam a răspuns: ‘Au(O) pe Moise şi pe proroci; să asculte de ei’. 30 ‘Nu, părinte Avraame’, a zis el, ‘ci, dacă se va duce la ei cineva din morţi, se vor pocăi’. 31 Şi Avraam i-a răspuns: ‘Dacă nu ascultă pe Moise şi pe proroci, nu vor crede nici chiar(P) dacă ar învia cineva din morţi’.”

The Parable of the Shrewd Manager
16 Jesus told his disciples: “There was a rich man whose manager was accused of wasting his possessions.(A) 2 So he called him in and asked him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your management, because you cannot be manager any longer.’
3 “The manager said to himself, ‘What shall I do now? My master is taking away my job. I’m not strong enough to dig, and I’m ashamed to beg— 4 I know what I’ll do so that, when I lose my job here, people will welcome me into their houses.’
5 “So he called in each one of his master’s debtors. He asked the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’
6 “‘Nine hundred gallons[a] of olive oil,’ he replied.
“The manager told him, ‘Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it four hundred and fifty.’
7 “Then he asked the second, ‘And how much do you owe?’
“‘A thousand bushels[b] of wheat,’ he replied.
“He told him, ‘Take your bill and make it eight hundred.’
8 “The master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly. For the people of this world(B) are more shrewd(C) in dealing with their own kind than are the people of the light.(D) 9 I tell you, use worldly wealth(E) to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.(F)
10 “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much,(G) and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. 11 So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth,(H) who will trust you with true riches? 12 And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you property of your own?
13 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.”(I)
14 The Pharisees, who loved money,(J) heard all this and were sneering at Jesus.(K) 15 He said to them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves(L) in the eyes of others, but God knows your hearts.(M) What people value highly is detestable in God’s sight.

16 “The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John.(N) Since that time, the good news of the kingdom of God is being preached,(O) and everyone is forcing their way into it. 17 It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the least stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law.(P)
18 “Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery, and the man who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.(Q)
The Rich Man and Lazarus
19 “There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day.(R) 20 At his gate was laid a beggar(S) named Lazarus, covered with sores 21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table.(T) Even the dogs came and licked his sores.
22 “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham,(U) have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’(V)
25 “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things,(W) but now he is comforted here and you are in agony.(X) 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’
27 “He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, 28 for I have five brothers. Let him warn them,(Y) so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’
29 “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses(Z) and the Prophets;(AA) let them listen to them.’
30 “‘No, father Abraham,’(AB) he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’
31 “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”
