Yn y bymthegfed flwyddyn o ymerodraeth Tiberius Cesar, a Phontius Peilat yn rhaglaw Jwdea, a Herod yn detrarch Galilea, a’i frawd Philip yn detrarch Iturea a gwlad Trachonitis, a Lysanias yn detrarch Abilene, Dan yr archoffeiriaid Annas a Chaiaffas, y daeth gair Duw at Ioan, mab Sachareias, yn y diffeithwch. Ac efe a ddaeth i bob goror ynghylch yr Iorddonen, gan bregethu bedydd edifeirwch er maddeuant pechodau; Fel y mae yn ysgrifenedig yn llyfr ymadroddion Eseias y proffwyd, yr hwn sydd yn dywedyd, Llef un yn llefain yn y diffeithwch, Paratowch ffordd yr Arglwydd, gwnewch ei lwybrau ef yn union. Pob pant a lenwir, a phob mynydd a bryn a ostyngir, a’r gŵyrgeimion a wneir yn union, a’r geirwon yn ffyrdd gwastad: A phob cnawd a wêl iachawdwriaeth Duw. Am hynny efe a ddywedodd wrth y bobl oedd yn dyfod i’w bedyddio ganddo, O genhedlaeth gwiberod, pwy a’ch rhagrybuddiodd chwi i ffoi oddi wrth y digofaint sydd ar ddyfod? Dygwch gan hynny ffrwythau addas i edifeirwch; ac na ddechreuwch ddywedyd ynoch eich hunain, Y mae gennym ni Abraham yn dad: canys yr ydwyf yn dywedyd i chwi, y dichon Duw o’r cerrig hyn godi plant i Abraham. Ac yr awr hon y mae’r fwyell wedi ei gosod ar wreiddyn y prennau: pob pren gan hynny a’r nid yw yn dwyn ffrwyth da, a gymynir i lawr, ac a fwrir yn tân. 10 A’r bobloedd a ofynasant iddo, gan ddywedyd, Pa beth gan hynny a wnawn ni? 11 Ac efe a atebodd ac a ddywedodd wrthynt, Y neb sydd ganddo ddwy bais, rhodded i’r neb sydd heb yr un; a’r neb sydd ganddo fwyd, gwnaed yr un modd. 12 A’r publicanod hefyd a ddaethant i’w bedyddio, ac a ddywedasant wrtho, Athro, beth a wnawn ni? 13 Ac efe a ddywedodd wrthynt, Na cheisiwch ddim mwy nag sydd wedi ei osod i chwi. 14 A’r milwyr hefyd a ofynasant iddo, gan ddywedyd, A pha beth a wnawn ninnau? Ac efe a ddywedodd wrthynt, Na fyddwch draws wrth neb, ac na cham-achwynwch ar neb; a byddwch fodlon i’ch cyflogau. 15 Ac fel yr oedd y bobl yn disgwyl, a phawb yn meddylied yn eu calonnau am Ioan, ai efe oedd y Crist; 16 Ioan a atebodd, gan ddywedyd wrthynt oll, Myfi yn ddiau ydwyf yn eich bedyddio chwi â dwfr: ond y mae un cryfach na myfi yn dyfod, yr hwn nid wyf fi deilwng i ddatod carrai ei esgidiau: efe a’ch bedyddia chwi â’r Ysbryd Glân, ac â thân. 17 Yr hwn y mae ei wyntyll yn ei law, ac efe a lwyr lanha ei lawr dyrnu, ac a gasgl y gwenith i’w ysgubor; ond yr us a lysg efe â thân anniffoddadwy. 18 A llawer o bethau eraill a gynghorodd efe, ac a bregethodd i’r bobl. 19 Ond Herod y tetrarch, pan geryddwyd ef ganddo am Herodias gwraig Philip ei frawd, ac am yr holl ddrygioni a wnaethai Herod, 20 A chwanegodd hyn hefyd heblaw’r cwbl, ac a gaeodd ar Ioan yn y carchar.

21 A bu, pan oeddid yn bedyddio’r holl bobl, a’r Iesu yn ei fedyddio hefyd, ac yn gweddïo, agoryd y nef, 22 A disgyn o’r Ysbryd Glân mewn rhith corfforol, megis colomen, arno ef; a dyfod llef o’r nef yn dywedyd, Ti yw fy annwyl Fab; ynot ti y’m bodlonwyd. 23 A’r Iesu ei hun oedd ynghylch dechrau ei ddengmlwydd ar hugain oed, mab (fel y tybid) i Joseff, fab Eli, 24 Fab Mathat, fab Lefi, fab Melchi, fab Janna, fab Joseff, 25 Fab Matathias, fab Amos, fab Naum, fab Esli, fab Naggai, 26 Fab Maath, fab Matathias, fab Semei, fab Joseff, fab Jwda, 27 Fab Joanna, fab Rhesa, fab Sorobabel, fab Salathiel, fab Neri, 28 Fab Melchi, fab Adi, fab Cosam, fab Elmodam, fab Er, 29 Fab Jose, fab Elieser, fab Jorim, fab Mathat, fab Lefi, 30 Fab Simeon, fab Jwda, fab Joseff, fab Jonan, fab Eliacim, 31 Fab Melea, fab Mainan, fab Matatha, fab Nathan, fab Dafydd, 32 Fab Jesse, fab Obed, fab Boos, fab Salmon, fab Naason, 33 Fab Aminadab, fab Aram, fab Esrom, fab Phares, fab Jwda, 34 Fab Jacob, fab Isaac, fab Abraham, fab Thara, fab Nachor, 35 Fab Saruch, fab Ragau, fab Phalec, fab Heber, fab Sala, 36 Fab Cainan, fab Arffacsad, fab Sem, fab Noe, fab Lamech, 37 Fab Mathwsala, fab Enoch, fab Jared, fab Maleleel, fab Cainan, 38 Fab Enos, fab Seth, fab Adda, fab Duw.

John the Baptist Prepares the Way(A)(B)

In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar—when Pontius Pilate(C) was governor of Judea, Herod(D) tetrarch of Galilee, his brother Philip tetrarch of Iturea and Traconitis, and Lysanias tetrarch of Abilene— during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas,(E) the word of God came to John(F) son of Zechariah(G) in the wilderness. He went into all the country around the Jordan, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.(H) As it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet:

“A voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
    make straight paths for him.
Every valley shall be filled in,
every mountain and hill made low.
The crooked roads shall become straight,
    the rough ways smooth.
And all people will see God’s salvation.’”[a](I)

John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers!(J) Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath?(K) Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’(L) For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”(M)

10 “What should we do then?”(N) the crowd asked.

11 John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.”(O)

12 Even tax collectors came to be baptized.(P) “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?”

13 “Don’t collect any more than you are required to,”(Q) he told them.

14 Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”

He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely(R)—be content with your pay.”

15 The people were waiting expectantly and were all wondering in their hearts if John(S) might possibly be the Messiah.(T) 16 John answered them all, “I baptize you with[b] water.(U) But one who is more powerful than I will come, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with[c] the Holy Spirit and fire.(V) 17 His winnowing fork(W) is in his hand to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.”(X) 18 And with many other words John exhorted the people and proclaimed the good news to them.

19 But when John rebuked Herod(Y) the tetrarch because of his marriage to Herodias, his brother’s wife, and all the other evil things he had done, 20 Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison.(Z)

The Baptism and Genealogy of Jesus(AA)(AB)

21 When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying,(AC) heaven was opened 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him(AD) in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son,(AE) whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”(AF)
