2 Lúc ấy Xê-xa Au-gút-tơ ra sắc lệnh cho tất cả công dân thuộc các quốc gia dưới quyền của đế quốc La-mã phải đăng bộ. 2 Đây là lần đăng bộ [a] đầu tiên được thực hiện khi Qui-ri-niu làm tổng đốc xứ Xy-ri. 3 Mọi người đều trở về nguyên quán để đăng bộ.
4 Vì Giô-xép thuộc dòng họ Đa-vít, nên ông từ Na-xa-rét, một thị trấn miền Ga-li-lê, đi đến Bết-lê-hem thuộc miền Giu-đia, cũng gọi là thành Đa-vít. 5 Ông đăng bộ cùng với Ma-ri là người đã hứa hôn [b] với mình, lúc ấy đang mang thai. 6 Trong khi hai người ở đó, thì Ma-ri đến ngày sinh. 7 Cô sinh con trai đầu lòng, lấy vải bọc em bé và đặt nằm trong máng ăn súc vật, vì quán trọ không còn chỗ.
Các anh chăn chiên nghe tin Chúa Giê-xu sinh ra
8 Đêm ấy, có mấy anh chăn chiên thức canh bầy giữa đồng trống. 9 Bỗng một thiên sứ của Chúa xuất hiện trước mặt họ. Vinh quang của Chúa chói lòa xung quanh. Các anh chăn chiên hốt hoảng. 10 Thiên sứ liền trấn an, “Đừng sợ. Tôi báo cho các anh một tin mừng, sẽ là niềm vui lớn cho toàn dân. 11 Hôm nay Đấng Cứu Thế đã được sinh ra trong thành Đa-vít. Ngài là Cứu Chúa. 12 Đây là dấu hiệu để các anh nhận ra Ngài: Các anh sẽ gặp một hài nhi bọc bằng vải, nằm trong máng ăn súc vật.”
13 Rồi một đoàn thiên sứ rất đông từ thiên đàng nhập cùng với vị thiên sứ đầu tiên, ca vang lời chúc tụng Thượng Đế:
14 “Vinh danh Thánh Chúa trên trời,
Hòa bình dưới thế cho kẻ làm vui lòng Ngài.”
15 Sau khi các thiên sứ trở về thiên đàng, mấy anh chăn chiên bảo nhau, “Chúng ta hãy đi đến Bết-lê-hem để xem sự việc mà Chúa đã báo cho chúng ta.”
16 Nên họ vội vàng ra đi tìm gặp được Ma-ri, Giô-xép và hài nhi mới sinh đang nằm trong máng ăn súc vật. 17 Khi thấy hài nhi họ liền thuật lại lời thiên sứ nói về hài nhi ấy. 18 Ai nấy đều kinh ngạc về lời của các anh chăn chiên. 19 Nhưng Ma-ri ấp ủ và suy nghĩ những lời ấy trong lòng. 20 Các anh chăn chiên trở về, ca ngợi và cảm tạ Thượng Đế về những gì họ đã nghe và thấy như lời thiên sứ đã bảo họ.
21 Tám ngày sau khi sinh ra, hài nhi được cắt dương bì và đặt tên là Giê-xu, tức là tên mà thiên sứ đã đặt cho trước khi Ma-ri mang thai.
Chúa Giê-xu được dâng nơi đền thờ
22 Khi đến kỳ Ma-ri và Giô-xép phải thi hành những điều đã qui định theo luật Mô-se về lễ tẩy sạch [c], hai ông bà đem hài nhi Giê-xu lên Giê-ru-sa-lem để dâng cho Chúa. 23 Vì luật pháp Chúa có ghi: “Mọi con trai đầu lòng phải được dâng cho Chúa.” [d] 24 Ma-ri và Giô-xép cũng mang theo một của lễ để dâng theo luật Chúa viết: “Các ngươi phải dâng hai con chim cu hoặc hai con bồ câu con.” [e]
Xi-mê-ôn gặp Chúa Giê-xu
25 Ở Giê-ru-sa-lem có một người tên Xi-mê-ôn. Ông là một người đạo đức và thánh thiện. Ông chờ đợi lúc Thượng Đế cất sự đau khổ khỏi dân Ít-ra-en. Ông là người có Thánh Linh ngự. 26 Xi-mê-ôn được Thánh Linh cho biết là ông sẽ không chết trước khi gặp Đấng Cứu Thế mà Chúa đã hứa. 27 Thánh Linh hướng dẫn Xi-mê-ôn lên đền thờ đúng lúc Ma-ri và Giô-xép mang hài nhi Giê-xu đến để thi hành những điều mà luật pháp qui định. 28 Xi-mê-ôn bế em bé trong tay và cảm tạ Thượng Đế như sau:
29 “Lạy Chúa, bây giờ xin cho kẻ tôi tớ Chúa qua đời bình an
theo như Ngài đã nói trước.
30 Vì mắt con đã thấy hài nhi mà Ngài đã chuẩn bị để cứu chúng con,
31 mọi dân tộc sẽ thấy điều ấy.
32 Ngài là ánh sáng soi đường cho các dân không phải Do-thái
và đem vinh dự lớn cho dân Ngài, tức dân Ít-ra-en.”
33 Cha và mẹ của Chúa Giê-xu rất ngạc nhiên về điều Xi-mê-ôn nói về em bé. 34 Rồi Xi-mê-ôn chúc phước cho gia đình và bảo Ma-ri, “Thượng Đế đã chọn em nầy để gây vấp ngã và giục giã cho nhiều người trong Ít-ra-en. Em nầy sẽ là một dấu hiệu từ Thượng Đế, mà nhiều người không chấp nhận, 35 để cho ý tưởng của nhiều người được phơi bày ra. Còn những gì xảy ra sẽ làm cho chị rất đau lòng.”
Bà An-na gặp Chúa Giê-xu
36 Có một nữ tiên tri tên An-na, xuất thân từ gia đình Pha-nu-ên, thuộc chi tộc A-se. An-na đã cao tuổi lắm. Sau khi lập gia đình, bà sống với chồng được bảy năm 37 rồi ở góa, đến nay đã tám mươi bốn tuổi. An-na không khi nào ra khỏi đền thờ nhưng bà trung tín thờ phụng Thượng Đế, cữ ăn và cầu nguyện ngày và đêm. 38 Lúc Xi-mê-ôn nói, bà cũng đang đứng đó. Bà cảm tạ Thượng Đế và thuật về hài nhi Giê-xu cho những người trông chờ Thượng Đế giải phóng Giê-ru-sa-lem.
Giô-xép và Ma-ri trở về nhà
39 Sau khi Giô-xép và Ma-ri thi hành xong những điều luật pháp Chúa qui định, thì trở về quê nhà ở Na-xa-rét thuộc miền Ga-li-lê. 40 Cậu bé dần dần khôn lớn và mạnh mẽ, ân phúc của Thượng Đế ở cùng cậu.
Cậu thiếu niên Giê-xu
41 Mỗi năm cha mẹ Chúa Giê-xu lên thành Giê-ru-sa-lem để dự lễ Vượt qua. 42 Lúc Ngài được mười hai tuổi thì cả gia đình lên dự lễ như vẫn thường làm. 43 Sau các ngày lễ thì gia đình lên đường trở về nhà. Nhưng cậu Giê-xu ở nán lại Giê-ru-sa-lem mà cha mẹ cậu không hay biết. 44 Hai người đi suốt một ngày đường, cứ yên trí cậu đi về chung với đồng bạn. Sau đó mới bắt đầu hỏi thăm tìm cậu trong đám thân nhân và bạn hữu. 45 Tìm không ra nên hai người liền đi trở lại Giê-ru-sa-lem để kiếm. 46 Mãi ba ngày sau, họ mới tìm được cậu đang ngồi trong đền thờ chung với các giáo sư luật, vừa nghe vừa hỏi. 47 Ai nghe cậu cũng lấy làm ngạc nhiên về trí thông minh và những câu trả lời của cậu. 48 Lúc cha mẹ tìm được cậu thì cả hai người đều sửng sốt. Mẹ cậu hỏi, “Con ơi, sao con đối với cha mẹ như thế nầy? Cha mẹ hết sức lo âu cho con và đã kiếm con khắp nơi!”
49 Cậu Giê-xu thưa, “Cha mẹ kiếm con làm gì? Cha mẹ không biết con phải ở trong nhà của Cha con sao?” 50 Nhưng cả hai người đều không hiểu cậu nói gì.
51 Chúa Giê-xu trở về Na-xa-rét và vâng phục cha mẹ. Còn mẹ Ngài ghi nhớ vào lòng những chuyện đã xảy ra. 52 Chúa Giê-xu càng trở nên khôn lớn. Mọi người và Thượng Đế đều quí mến cậu.

The Birth of Jesus Christ
2 In those days (A)a decree went out from (B)Caesar Augustus that all the world should be (C)registered. 2 This was the first (D)registration when[a] Quirinius (E)was governor of Syria. 3 And all went to be registered, each to his own town. 4 And Joseph also went up (F)from Galilee, from the town of (G)Nazareth, to Judea, to (H)the city of David, which is called (I)Bethlehem, (J)because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5 to be registered with Mary, his betrothed,[b] who was with child. 6 And (K)while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son and (L)wrapped him in swaddling cloths and (M)laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in (N)the inn.[c]
The Shepherds and the Angels
8 And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And an angel of the Lord (O)appeared to them, and (P)the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. 10 And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all (Q)the people. 11 For (R)unto you is born this day in (S)the city of David (T)a Savior, who is (U)Christ (V)the Lord. 12 And (W)this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby (X)wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel (Y)a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,
14 (Z)“Glory to God (AA)in the highest,
(AB)and on earth (AC)peace (AD)among those with whom he is pleased!”[d]
15 When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby (AE)lying in a manger. 17 And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. 18 And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. 19 But (AF)Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds returned, (AG)glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.
21 And (AH)at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, (AI)he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.
Jesus Presented at the Temple
22 And (AJ)when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem (AK)to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in (AL)the Law of the Lord, (AM)“Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”) 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in (AN)the Law of the Lord, (AO)“a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.” 25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was (AP)righteous and (AQ)devout, (AR)waiting for (AS)the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not (AT)see death before he had seen (AU)the Lord's Christ. 27 And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when (AV)the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law, 28 he took him up in his arms and (AW)blessed God and said,
29 “Lord, now you are letting your servant[e] depart (AX)in peace,
(AY)according to your word;
30 for (AZ)my eyes have seen your (BA)salvation
31 (BB)that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples,
32 (BC)a light for revelation to the Gentiles,

33 And (BF)his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him. 34 And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is appointed (BG)for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign (BH)that is opposed 35 (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.”
36 And there was (BI)a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was advanced in years, having lived with her husband seven years from when she was a virgin, 37 and then as a widow until she was eighty-four.[f] She did not depart from the temple, (BJ)worshiping with (BK)fasting and prayer night and day. 38 And coming up at that very hour she began to give thanks to God and to speak of him to all who were (BL)waiting for the redemption of Jerusalem.
The Return to Nazareth
39 And when they had performed everything according to (BM)the Law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own town of (BN)Nazareth. 40 (BO)And the child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom. And the favor of God was upon him.
The Boy Jesus in the Temple
41 Now (BP)his parents went (BQ)to Jerusalem every year at (BR)the Feast of the Passover. 42 And when he was twelve years old, (BS)they went up according to custom. 43 And when the feast (BT)was ended, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. (BU)His parents did not know it, 44 but supposing him to be in the group they went a day's journey, but then they began to search for him among their relatives and acquaintances, 45 and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem, searching for him. 46 After three days they found him in the temple, (BV)sitting among (BW)the teachers, listening to them and asking them questions. 47 And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding and his answers. 48 And when his parents[g] saw him, they were astonished. And his mother said to him, “Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, (BX)your father and I have been searching for you in great distress.” 49 And he said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that (BY)I must be in (BZ)my Father's house?”[h] 50 And (CA)they did not understand the saying that he spoke to them. 51 And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them. And (CB)his mother treasured up all these things in her heart.
52 And Jesus (CC)increased in wisdom and in stature[i] and in (CD)favor with God and man.

The Shepherds and the Angels
8 And in that region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. 9 And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear. 10 And the angel said to them, “Be not afraid; for behold, I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people; 11 for to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be a sign for you: you will find a babe wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying,
14 “Glory to God in the highest,
and on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased!”[b]
15 When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” 16 And they went with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. 17 And when they saw it they made known the saying which had been told them concerning this child; 18 and all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. 19 But Mary kept all these things, pondering them in her heart. 20 And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.
Jesus Is Named
21 And at the end of eight days, when he was circumcised, he was called Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived in the womb.
Jesus Is Presented in the Temple
22 And when the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the law of the Lord, “Every male that opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”) 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.” 25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. 27 And inspired by the Spirit[c] he came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the law, 28 he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said,
29 “Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace,
according to thy word;
30 for mine eyes have seen thy salvation
31 which thou hast prepared in the presence of all peoples,
32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles,
and for glory to thy people Israel.”
33 And his father and his mother marveled at what was said about him; 34 and Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother,
“Behold, this child is set for the fall[d] and rising of many in Israel,
and for a sign that is spoken against
35 (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also),
that thoughts out of many hearts may be revealed.”

The Return to Nazareth

Behold, your father and I have been looking for you anxiously.” 49 And he said to them, “How is it that you sought me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?”[e] 50 And they did not understand the saying which he spoke to them. 51 And he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them; and his mother kept all these things in her heart.
52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature,[f] and in favor with God and man.
