A Ritual for Sacrifices[a]
Regulations for the Children of Israel
Chapter 1
Burnt Offerings.[b] 1 The Lord spoke to Moses from the meeting tent and said to him,[c] 2 “Speak to the children of Israel and tell them: When any one of you brings an offering to the Lord, you shall bring your animal from the herd or the flock. 3 If the offering is a burnt offering from the herd, let him offer a male without defect. He shall offer it at the entrance to the meeting tent, that it might be pleasing to the Lord. 4 He shall lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering, and it will be accepted for atonement on his behalf. 5 He shall kill the young bull before the Lord, and the priests, the sons of Aaron, shall take its blood and sprinkle it on the altar that is at the entrance to the meeting tent.[d] 6 He shall skin the burnt offering and cut it into pieces. 7 The sons of Aaron, the priests shall set a fire on the altar and arrange the wood upon the fire. 8 Then the sons of Aaron, the priests shall place the pieces of the animal, and its head and its fat, on the burning wood upon the altar. 9 He shall wash the entrails and the legs with water. Then the priest shall burn all of it on the altar as a burnt offering, a pleasing fragrance to the Lord.
10 “If the burnt offering is from the flock, a sheep or a goat, he shall offer a male without defect. 11 He shall slay it on the northern side of the altar before the Lord. The priests, the sons of Aaron, shall sprinkle its blood around the altar. 12 He shall cut it into pieces, and the priest shall take them, together with its head and its fat, and lay them upon the wood which is burning upon the altar. 13 He shall wash the entrails and the legs with water, and then the priest shall burn all of it on the altar as a burnt offering, a pleasing fragrance to the Lord.
14 “If the burnt offering to the Lord consists of birds,[e] then let him bring his offering of turtledoves or young pigeons. 15 The priest shall bring them to the altar and wring off their heads. He shall burn them upon the altar, but their blood is to be drained out on the side of the altar. 16 He shall tear out their crops with their feathers and toss them to the east side of the altar, the place where the ashes are kept. 17 He shall split the birds into two halves holding on to their wings, but he shall not separate the pieces. Then the priest shall burn them on the burning wood upon the altar. It is a burnt offering, a pleasing fragrance to the Lord.

- Leviticus 1:1 Different kinds of sacrifice were offered to the Lord in the Jerusalem temple. In them we find customs inherited from the period when the Hebrews lived a semi-nomadic way of life, as well as rites regularly practiced in Mesopotamia, Egypt, and especially in the land of Canaan. But the Israelite faith was able to purify the practices from all these influences and use them for the glory of the one true God (chs. 1–7).
- Leviticus 1:1 The burnt offering as the perfect form of homage to God: the victim, which was without blemish, was entirely consumed in fire, that is, removed from the material universe so as to enter the world of God. The owner of the victim offered it, through the mediation of priests, as a pleasing fragrance to the Lord, an ancient Eastern expression which the Bible uses to signify that God accepts the victim (Gen 8:21). The pouring of the blood expressed the offering of the life.
- Leviticus 1:1 Although these laws were composed long after Moses lived, the direct address form that is used throughout Leviticus implies that the laws embody the essence of what God taught him and wants the children of Israel to know.

The Burnt Offering
1 The Lord called to Moses(A) and spoke to him from the tent of meeting.(B) He said, 2 “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘When anyone among you brings an offering to the Lord,(C) bring as your offering an animal from either the herd or the flock.(D)
3 “‘If the offering is a burnt offering(E) from the herd,(F) you are to offer a male without defect.(G) You must present it at the entrance to the tent(H) of meeting so that it will be acceptable(I) to the Lord. 4 You are to lay your hand on the head(J) of the burnt offering,(K) and it will be accepted(L) on your behalf to make atonement(M) for you. 5 You are to slaughter(N) the young bull(O) before the Lord, and then Aaron’s sons(P) the priests shall bring the blood and splash it against the sides of the altar(Q) at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 6 You are to skin(R) the burnt offering and cut it into pieces.(S) 7 The sons of Aaron the priest are to put fire on the altar and arrange wood(T) on the fire. 8 Then Aaron’s sons the priests shall arrange the pieces, including the head and the fat,(U) on the wood(V) that is burning on the altar. 9 You are to wash the internal organs and the legs with water,(W) and the priest is to burn all of it(X) on the altar.(Y) It is a burnt offering,(Z) a food offering,(AA) an aroma pleasing to the Lord.(AB)
10 “‘If the offering is a burnt offering from the flock, from either the sheep(AC) or the goats,(AD) you are to offer a male without defect. 11 You are to slaughter it at the north side of the altar(AE) before the Lord, and Aaron’s sons the priests shall splash its blood against the sides of the altar.(AF) 12 You are to cut it into pieces, and the priest shall arrange them, including the head and the fat,(AG) on the wood that is burning on the altar. 13 You are to wash the internal organs and the legs with water,(AH) and the priest is to bring all of them and burn them(AI) on the altar.(AJ) It is a burnt offering,(AK) a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord.
14 “‘If the offering to the Lord is a burnt offering of birds, you are to offer a dove or a young pigeon.(AL) 15 The priest shall bring it to the altar, wring off the head(AM) and burn it on the altar; its blood shall be drained out on the side of the altar.(AN) 16 He is to remove the crop and the feathers[a] and throw them down east of the altar where the ashes(AO) are. 17 He shall tear it open by the wings, not dividing it completely,(AP) and then the priest shall burn it on the wood(AQ) that is burning on the altar. It is a burnt offering, a food offering, an aroma pleasing to the Lord.

1 Llamó Jehová a Moisés, y habló con él desde el tabernáculo de reunión, diciendo: 2 Habla a los hijos de Israel y diles: Cuando alguno de entre vosotros ofrece ofrenda a Jehová, de ganado vacuno u ovejuno haréis vuestra ofrenda.
3 Si su ofrenda fuere holocausto vacuno, macho sin defecto lo ofrecerá; de su voluntad lo ofrecerá a la puerta del tabernáculo de reunión delante de Jehová. 4 Y pondrá su mano sobre la cabeza del holocausto, y será aceptado para expiación suya. 5 Entonces degollará el becerro en la presencia de Jehová; y los sacerdotes hijos de Aarón ofrecerán la sangre, y la rociarán alrededor sobre el altar, el cual está a la puerta del tabernáculo de reunión. 6 Y desollará el holocausto, y lo dividirá en sus piezas. 7 Y los hijos del sacerdote Aarón pondrán fuego sobre el altar, y compondrán la leña sobre el fuego. 8 Luego los sacerdotes hijos de Aarón acomodarán las piezas, la cabeza y la grosura de los intestinos, sobre la leña que está sobre el fuego que habrá encima del altar; 9 y lavará con agua los intestinos y las piernas, y el sacerdote hará arder todo sobre el altar; holocausto es, ofrenda encendida de olor grato para Jehová.
10 Si su ofrenda para holocausto fuere del rebaño, de las ovejas o de las cabras, macho sin defecto lo ofrecerá. 11 Y lo degollará al lado norte del altar delante de Jehová; y los sacerdotes hijos de Aarón rociarán su sangre sobre el altar alrededor. 12 Lo dividirá en sus piezas, con su cabeza y la grosura de los intestinos; y el sacerdote las acomodará sobre la leña que está sobre el fuego que habrá encima del altar; 13 y lavará las entrañas y las piernas con agua; y el sacerdote lo ofrecerá todo, y lo hará arder sobre el altar; holocausto es, ofrenda encendida de olor grato para Jehová.
14 Si la ofrenda para Jehová fuere holocausto de aves, presentará su ofrenda de tórtolas, o de palominos. 15 Y el sacerdote la ofrecerá sobre el altar, y le quitará la cabeza, y hará que arda en el altar; y su sangre será exprimida sobre la pared del altar. 16 Y le quitará el buche y las plumas, lo cual echará junto al altar, hacia el oriente, en el lugar de las cenizas. 17 Y la henderá por sus alas, pero no la dividirá en dos; y el sacerdote la hará arder sobre el altar, sobre la leña que estará en el fuego; holocausto es, ofrenda encendida de olor grato para Jehová.
