Leviticus 5-13

New International Version

5 “‘If anyone sins because they do not speak up when they hear a public charge to testify^(A) regarding something they have seen or learned about, they will be held responsible.^(B)

²“‘If anyone becomes aware that they are guilty—if they unwittingly touch anything ceremonially unclean (whether the carcass of an unclean animal, wild or domestic, or of any unclean creature that moves along the ground)^(C) and they are unaware that they have become unclean,^(D) but then they come to realize their guilt; ³or if they touch human uncleanness^(E) (anything that would make them unclean)^(F) even though they are unaware of it, but then they learn of it and realize their guilt; ⁴or if anyone thoughtlessly takes an oath^(G) to do anything, whether good or evil^(H) (in any matter one might carelessly swear about) even though they are unaware of it, but then they learn of it and realize their guilt— ⁵when anyone becomes aware that they are guilty in any of these matters, they must confess^(I) in what way they have sinned. ⁶As a penalty for the sin they have committed, they must bring to the Lord a female lamb or goat^(J) from the flock as a sin offering^[a];^(K) and the priest shall make atonement^(L) for them for their sin.

⁷“‘Anyone who cannot afford^(M) a lamb^(N) is to bring two doves or two young pigeons^(O) to the Lord as a penalty for their sin—one for a sin offering and the other for a burnt offering. ⁸They are to bring them to the priest, who shall first offer the one for the sin offering. He is to wring its head from its neck,^(P) not dividing it completely,^(Q) ⁹and is to splash^(R) some of the blood of the sin offering against the side of the altar;^(S) the rest of the blood must be drained out at the base of the altar.^(T) It is a sin offering. ¹⁰The priest shall then offer the other as a burnt offering in the prescribed way^(U) and make atonement^(V) for them for the sin they have committed, and they will be forgiven.^(W)

¹¹“‘If, however, they cannot afford^(X) two doves or two young pigeons,^(Y) they are to bring as an offering for their sin a tenth of an ephah^[b]^(Z) of the finest flour^(AA) for a sin offering. They must not put olive oil or incense on it, because it is a sin offering. ¹²They are to bring it to the priest, who shall take a handful of it as a memorial^[c] portion^(AB) and burn it on the altar^(AC) on top of the food offerings presented to the Lord. It is a sin offering. ¹³In this way the priest will make atonement^(AD) for them for any of these sins they have committed, and they will be forgiven. The rest of the offering will belong to the priest,^(AE) as in the case of the grain offering.^(AF)’”

The Guilt Offering

¹⁴The Lord said to Moses: ¹⁵“When anyone is unfaithful to the Lord by sinning unintentionally^(AG) in regard to any of the Lord’s holy things, they are to bring to the Lord as a penalty^(AH) a ram^(AI) from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value in silver, according to the sanctuary shekel.^[d]^(AJ) It is a guilt offering.^(AK) ¹⁶They must make restitution^(AL) for what they have failed to do in regard to the holy things, pay an additional penalty of a fifth of its value^(AM) and give it all to the priest. The priest will make atonement for them with the ram as a guilt offering, and they will be forgiven.

¹⁷“If anyone sins and does what is forbidden in any of the Lord’s commands, even though they do not know it,^(AN) they are guilty and will be held responsible.^(AO) ¹⁸They are to bring to the priest as a guilt offering^(AP) a ram from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value. In this way the priest will make atonement for them for the wrong they have committed unintentionally, and they will be forgiven.^(AQ) ¹⁹It is a guilt offering; they have been guilty of^[e] wrongdoing against the Lord.”^(AR)

6 ^[f]The Lord said to Moses: ²“If anyone sins and is unfaithful to the Lord^(AS) by deceiving a neighbor^(AT) about something entrusted to them or left in their care^(AU) or about something stolen, or if they cheat^(AV) their neighbor, ³or if they find lost property and lie about it,^(AW) or if they swear falsely^(AX) about any such sin that people may commit— ⁴when they sin in any of these ways and realize their guilt, they must return^(AY) what they have stolen or taken by extortion, or what was entrusted to them, or the lost property they found, ⁵or whatever it was they swore falsely about. They must make restitution^(AZ) in full, add a fifth of the value to it and give it all to the owner on the day they present their guilt offering.^(BA) ⁶And as a penalty they must bring to the priest, that is, to the Lord, their guilt offering,^(BB) a ram from the flock, one without defect and of the proper value.^(BC) ⁷In this way the priest will make atonement^(BD) for them before the Lord, and they will be forgiven for any of the things they did that made them guilty.”

The Burnt Offering

⁸The Lord said to Moses: ⁹“Give Aaron and his sons this command: ‘These are the regulations for the burnt offering^(BE): The burnt offering is to remain on the altar hearth throughout the night, till morning, and the fire must be kept burning on the altar.^(BF) ¹⁰The priest shall then put on his linen clothes,^(BG) with linen undergarments next to his body,^(BH) and shall remove the ashes^(BI) of the burnt offering that the fire has consumed on the altar and place them beside the altar. ¹¹Then he is to take off these clothes and put on others, and carry the ashes outside the camp to a place that is ceremonially clean.^(BJ) ¹²The fire on the altar must be kept burning; it must not go out. Every morning the priest is to add firewood^(BK) and arrange the burnt offering on the fire and burn the fat^(BL) of the fellowship offerings^(BM) on it. ¹³The fire must be kept burning on the altar continuously; it must not go out.

The Grain Offering

¹⁴“‘These are the regulations for the grain offering:^(BN) Aaron’s sons are to bring it before the Lord, in front of the altar. ¹⁵The priest is to take a handful of the finest flour and some olive oil, together with all the incense^(BO) on the grain offering,^(BP) and burn the memorial^[g] portion^(BQ) on the altar as an aroma pleasing to the Lord. ¹⁶Aaron and his sons^(BR) shall eat the rest^(BS) of it, but it is to be eaten without yeast^(BT) in the sanctuary area;^(BU) they are to eat it in the courtyard^(BV) of the tent of meeting.^(BW) ¹⁷It must not be baked with yeast; I have given it as their share^(BX) of the food offerings presented to me.^(BY) Like the sin offering^[h] and the guilt offering, it is most holy.^(BZ) ¹⁸Any male descendant of Aaron may eat it.^(CA) For all generations to come^(CB) it is his perpetual share^(CC) of the food offerings presented to the Lord. Whatever touches them will become holy.^[i]^(CD)’”

¹⁹The Lord also said to Moses, ²⁰“This is the offering Aaron and his sons are to bring to the Lord on the day he^[j] is anointed:^(CE) a tenth of an ephah^[k]^(CF) of the finest flour^(CG) as a regular grain offering,^(CH) half of it in the morning and half in the evening. ²¹It must be prepared with oil on a griddle;^(CI) bring it well-mixed and present the grain offering broken^[l] in pieces as an aroma pleasing to the Lord. ²²The son who is to succeed him as anointed priest^(CJ) shall prepare it. It is the Lord’s perpetual share and is to be burned completely.^(CK) ²³Every grain offering of a priest shall be burned completely; it must not be eaten.”

The Sin Offering

²⁴The Lord said to Moses, ²⁵“Say to Aaron and his sons: ‘These are the regulations for the sin offering:^(CL) The sin offering is to be slaughtered before the Lord^(CM) in the place^(CN) the burnt offering is slaughtered; it is most holy. ²⁶The priest who offers it shall eat it; it is to be eaten in the sanctuary area,^(CO) in the courtyard^(CP) of the tent of meeting.^(CQ) ²⁷Whatever touches any of the flesh will become holy,^(CR) and if any of the blood is spattered on a garment, you must wash it in the sanctuary area. ²⁸The clay pot^(CS) the meat is cooked in must be broken; but if it is cooked in a bronze pot, the pot is to be scoured and rinsed with water. ²⁹Any male in a priest’s family may eat it;^(CT) it is most holy.^(CU) ³⁰But any sin offering whose blood is brought into the tent of meeting to make atonement^(CV) in the Holy Place^(CW) must not be eaten; it must be burned up.^(CX)

The Guilt Offering

7 “‘These are the regulations for the guilt offering,^(CY) which is most holy: ²The guilt offering is to be slaughtered in the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered, and its blood is to be splashed against the sides of the altar. ³All its fat^(CZ) shall be offered: the fat tail and the fat that covers the internal organs, ⁴both kidneys with the fat on them near the loins, and the long lobe of the liver, which is to be removed with the kidneys.^(DA) ⁵The priest shall burn them on the altar^(DB) as a food offering presented to the Lord. It is a guilt offering. ⁶Any male in a priest’s family may eat it,^(DC) but it must be eaten in the sanctuary area; it is most holy.^(DD)

⁷“‘The same law applies to both the sin offering^[m]^(DE) and the guilt offering:^(DF) They belong to the priest^(DG) who makes atonement with them.^(DH) ⁸The priest who offers a burnt offering for anyone may keep its hide^(DI) for himself. ⁹Every grain offering baked in an oven^(DJ) or cooked in a pan^(DK) or on a griddle^(DL) belongs to the priest who offers it, ¹⁰and every grain offering, whether mixed with olive oil or dry, belongs equally to all the sons of Aaron.

The Fellowship Offering

¹¹“‘These are the regulations for the fellowship offering anyone may present to the Lord:

¹²“‘If they offer it as an expression of thankfulness, then along with this thank offering^(DM) they are to offer thick loaves^(DN) made without yeast^(DO) and with olive oil mixed in, thin loaves^(DP) made without yeast and brushed with oil,^(DQ) and thick loaves of the finest flour well-kneaded and with oil mixed in. ¹³Along with their fellowship offering of thanksgiving^(DR) they are to present an offering with thick loaves of bread made with yeast.^(DS) ¹⁴They are to bring one of each kind as an offering, a contribution to the Lord; it belongs to the priest who splashes the blood of the fellowship offering against the altar. ¹⁵The meat of their fellowship offering of thanksgiving must be eaten on the day it is offered; they must leave none of it till morning.^(DT)

¹⁶“‘If, however, their offering is the result of a vow^(DU) or is a freewill offering,^(DV) the sacrifice shall be eaten on the day they offer it, but anything left over may be eaten on the next day.^(DW) ¹⁷Any meat of the sacrifice left over till the third day must be burned up.^(DX) ¹⁸If any meat of the fellowship offering^(DY) is eaten on the third day, the one who offered it will not be accepted.^(DZ) It will not be reckoned^(EA) to their credit, for it has become impure; the person who eats any of it will be held responsible.^(EB)

¹⁹“‘Meat that touches anything ceremonially unclean must not be eaten; it must be burned up. As for other meat, anyone ceremonially clean may eat it. ²⁰But if anyone who is unclean^(EC) eats any meat of the fellowship offering belonging to the Lord, they must be cut off from their people.^(ED) ²¹Anyone who touches something unclean^(EE)—whether human uncleanness or an unclean animal or any unclean creature that moves along the ground^[n]—and then eats any of the meat of the fellowship offering belonging to the Lord must be cut off from their people.’”

Eating Fat and Blood Forbidden

²²The Lord said to Moses, ²³“Say to the Israelites: ‘Do not eat any of the fat of cattle, sheep or goats.^(EF) ²⁴The fat of an animal found dead or torn by wild animals^(EG) may be used for any other purpose, but you must not eat it. ²⁵Anyone who eats the fat of an animal from which a food offering may be^[o] presented to the Lord must be cut off from their people. ²⁶And wherever you live, you must not eat the blood^(EH) of any bird or animal. ²⁷Anyone who eats blood^(EI) must be cut off from their people.’”

The Priests’ Share

²⁸The Lord said to Moses, ²⁹“Say to the Israelites: ‘Anyone who brings a fellowship offering to the Lord is to bring part of it as their sacrifice to the Lord. ³⁰With their own hands they are to present the food offering to the Lord; they are to bring the fat, together with the breast, and wave the breast before the Lord as a wave offering.^(EJ) ³¹The priest shall burn the fat on the altar,^(EK) but the breast belongs to Aaron and his sons.^(EL) ³²You are to give the right thigh of your fellowship offerings to the priest as a contribution.^(EM) ³³The son of Aaron who offers the blood and the fat of the fellowship offering shall have the right thigh as his share. ³⁴From the fellowship offerings of the Israelites, I have taken the breast that is waved and the thigh^(EN) that is presented and have given them to Aaron the priest and his sons^(EO) as their perpetual share from the Israelites.’”

³⁵This is the portion of the food offerings presented to the Lord that were allotted to Aaron and his sons on the day they were presented to serve the Lord as priests. ³⁶On the day they were anointed,^(EP) the Lord commanded that the Israelites give this to them as their perpetual share for the generations to come.

³⁷These, then, are the regulations for the burnt offering,^(EQ) the grain offering,^(ER) the sin offering, the guilt offering, the ordination offering^(ES) and the fellowship offering, ³⁸which the Lord gave Moses^(ET) at Mount Sinai^(EU) in the Desert of Sinai on the day he commanded the Israelites to bring their offerings to the Lord.^(EV)

The Ordination of Aaron and His Sons^(EW)

8 The Lord said to Moses, ²“Bring Aaron and his sons,^(EX) their garments,^(EY) the anointing oil,^(EZ) the bull for the sin offering,^[p]^(FA) the two rams^(FB) and the basket containing bread made without yeast,^(FC) ³and gather the entire assembly^(FD) at the entrance to the tent of meeting.” ⁴Moses did as the Lord commanded him, and the assembly gathered at the entrance to the tent of meeting.

⁵Moses said to the assembly, “This is what the Lord has commanded to be done.^(FE)” ⁶Then Moses brought Aaron and his sons forward and washed them with water.^(FF) ⁷He put the tunic on Aaron, tied the sash around him, clothed him with the robe and put the ephod on him. He also fastened the ephod with a decorative waistband, which he tied around him.^(FG) ⁸He placed the breastpiece^(FH) on him and put the Urim and Thummim^(FI) in the breastpiece. ⁹Then he placed the turban^(FJ) on Aaron’s head and set the gold plate, the sacred emblem,^(FK) on the front of it, as the Lord commanded Moses.^(FL)

¹⁰Then Moses took the anointing oil^(FM) and anointed^(FN) the tabernacle^(FO) and everything in it, and so consecrated them. ¹¹He sprinkled some of the oil on the altar seven times, anointing the altar and all its utensils and the basin with its stand, to consecrate them.^(FP) ¹²He poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed^(FQ) him to consecrate him.^(FR) ¹³Then he brought Aaron’s sons^(FS) forward, put tunics^(FT) on them, tied sashes around them and fastened caps on them, as the Lord commanded Moses.^(FU)

¹⁴He then presented the bull^(FV) for the sin offering,^(FW) and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on its head.^(FX) ¹⁵Moses slaughtered the bull and took some of the blood,^(FY) and with his finger he put it on all the horns of the altar^(FZ) to purify the altar.^(GA) He poured out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. So he consecrated it to make atonement for it.^(GB) ¹⁶Moses also took all the fat around the internal organs, the long lobe of the liver, and both kidneys and their fat, and burned it on the altar. ¹⁷But the bull with its hide and its flesh and its intestines^(GC) he burned up outside the camp,^(GD) as the Lord commanded Moses.

¹⁸He then presented the ram^(GE) for the burnt offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on its head. ¹⁹Then Moses slaughtered the ram and splashed the blood against the sides of the altar. ²⁰He cut the ram into pieces and burned the head, the pieces and the fat.^(GF) ²¹He washed the internal organs and the legs with water and burned the whole ram on the altar. It was a burnt offering, a pleasing aroma, a food offering presented to the Lord, as the Lord commanded Moses.

²²He then presented the other ram, the ram for the ordination,^(GG) and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on its head.^(GH) ²³Moses slaughtered the ram and took some of its blood and put it on the lobe of Aaron’s right ear, on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot.^(GI) ²⁴Moses also brought Aaron’s sons forward and put some of the blood on the lobes of their right ears, on the thumbs of their right hands and on the big toes of their right feet. Then he splashed blood against the sides of the altar.^(GJ) ²⁵After that, he took the fat^(GK), the fat tail, all the fat around the internal organs, the long lobe of the liver, both kidneys and their fat and the right thigh. ²⁶And from the basket of bread made without yeast, which was before the Lord, he took one thick loaf, one thick loaf with olive oil mixed in, and one thin loaf,^(GL) and he put these on the fat portions and on the right thigh. ²⁷He put all these in the hands of Aaron and his sons, and they waved them before the Lord^(GM) as a wave offering. ²⁸Then Moses took them from their hands and burned them on the altar on top of the burnt offering as an ordination offering, a pleasing aroma, a food offering presented to the Lord. ²⁹Moses also took the breast, which was his share of the ordination ram,^(GN) and waved it before the Lord as a wave offering, as the Lord commanded Moses.

³⁰Then Moses^(GO) took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood from the altar and sprinkled them on Aaron and his garments^(GP) and on his sons and their garments. So he consecrated^(GQ) Aaron and his garments and his sons and their garments.

³¹Moses then said to Aaron and his sons, “Cook the meat at the entrance to the tent of meeting^(GR) and eat it there with the bread from the basket of ordination offerings, as I was commanded: ‘Aaron and his sons are to eat it.’ ³²Then burn up the rest of the meat and the bread. ³³Do not leave the entrance to the tent of meeting for seven days, until the days of your ordination are completed, for your ordination will last seven days.^(GS) ³⁴What has been done today was commanded by the Lord^(GT) to make atonement for you. ³⁵You must stay at the entrance to the tent of meeting day and night for seven days and do what the Lord requires,^(GU) so you will not die; for that is what I have been commanded.”

³⁶So Aaron and his sons did everything the Lord commanded through Moses.

The Priests Begin Their Ministry

9 On the eighth day^(GV) Moses summoned Aaron and his sons and the elders^(GW) of Israel. ²He said to Aaron, “Take a bull calf for your sin offering^[q] and a ram for your burnt offering, both without defect, and present them before the Lord. ³Then say to the Israelites: ‘Take a male goat^(GX) for a sin offering,^(GY) a calf^(GZ) and a lamb^(HA)—both a year old and without defect—for a burnt offering, ⁴and an ox^[r]^(HB) and a ram for a fellowship offering^(HC) to sacrifice before the Lord, together with a grain offering mixed with olive oil. For today the Lord will appear to you.^(HD)’”

⁵They took the things Moses commanded to the front of the tent of meeting, and the entire assembly came near and stood before the Lord. ⁶Then Moses said, “This is what the Lord has commanded you to do, so that the glory of the Lord^(HE) may appear to you.”

⁷Moses said to Aaron, “Come to the altar and sacrifice your sin offering and your burnt offering and make atonement for yourself and the people;^(HF) sacrifice the offering that is for the people and make atonement for them, as the Lord has commanded.^(HG)”

⁸So Aaron came to the altar and slaughtered the calf as a sin offering^(HH) for himself. ⁹His sons brought the blood to him,^(HI) and he dipped his finger into the blood and put it on the horns of the altar; the rest of the blood he poured out at the base of the altar.^(HJ) ¹⁰On the altar he burned the fat, the kidneys and the long lobe of the liver from the sin offering, as the Lord commanded Moses; ¹¹the flesh and the hide^(HK) he burned up outside the camp.^(HL)

¹²Then he slaughtered the burnt offering.^(HM) His sons handed him the blood,^(HN) and he splashed it against the sides of the altar. ¹³They handed him the burnt offering piece by piece, including the head, and he burned them on the altar.^(HO) ¹⁴He washed the internal organs and the legs and burned them on top of the burnt offering on the altar.^(HP)

¹⁵Aaron then brought the offering that was for the people.^(HQ) He took the goat for the people’s sin offering and slaughtered it and offered it for a sin offering as he did with the first one.

¹⁶He brought the burnt offering and offered it in the prescribed way.^(HR) ¹⁷He also brought the grain offering, took a handful of it and burned it on the altar in addition to the morning’s burnt offering.^(HS)

¹⁸He slaughtered the ox and the ram as the fellowship offering for the people.^(HT) His sons handed him the blood, and he splashed it against the sides of the altar. ¹⁹But the fat portions of the ox and the ram—the fat tail, the layer of fat, the kidneys and the long lobe of the liver— ²⁰these they laid on the breasts, and then Aaron burned the fat on the altar. ²¹Aaron waved the breasts and the right thigh before the Lord as a wave offering,^(HU) as Moses commanded.

²²Then Aaron lifted his hands toward the people and blessed them.^(HV) And having sacrificed the sin offering, the burnt offering and the fellowship offering, he stepped down.

²³Moses and Aaron then went into the tent of meeting.^(HW) When they came out, they blessed the people; and the glory of the Lord^(HX) appeared to all the people. ²⁴Fire^(HY) came out from the presence of the Lord and consumed the burnt offering and the fat portions on the altar. And when all the people saw it, they shouted for joy and fell facedown.^(HZ)

The Death of Nadab and Abihu

10 Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu^(IA) took their censers,^(IB) put fire in them^(IC) and added incense;^(ID) and they offered unauthorized fire before the Lord,^(IE) contrary to his command.^(IF) ²So fire came out^(IG) from the presence of the Lord and consumed them,^(IH) and they died before the Lord.^(II) ³Moses then said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord spoke of when he said:

“‘Among those who approach me^(IJ)
I will be proved holy;^(IK)
in the sight of all the people
I will be honored.^(IL)’”

Aaron remained silent.

⁴Moses summoned Mishael and Elzaphan,^(IM) sons of Aaron’s uncle Uzziel,^(IN) and said to them, “Come here; carry your cousins outside the camp,^(IO) away from the front of the sanctuary.^(IP)” ⁵So they came and carried them, still in their tunics,^(IQ) outside the camp, as Moses ordered.

⁶Then Moses said to Aaron and his sons Eleazar and Ithamar,^(IR) “Do not let your hair become unkempt^[s]^(IS) and do not tear your clothes,^(IT) or you will die and the Lord will be angry with the whole community.^(IU) But your relatives, all the Israelites, may mourn^(IV) for those the Lord has destroyed by fire. ⁷Do not leave the entrance to the tent of meeting^(IW) or you will die, because the Lord’s anointing oil^(IX) is on you.” So they did as Moses said.

⁸Then the Lord said to Aaron, ⁹“You and your sons are not to drink wine^(IY) or other fermented drink^(IZ) whenever you go into the tent of meeting, or you will die. This is a lasting ordinance^(JA) for the generations to come, ¹⁰so that you can distinguish between the holy and the common, between the unclean and the clean,^(JB) ¹¹and so you can teach^(JC) the Israelites all the decrees the Lord has given them through Moses.^(JD)”

¹²Moses said to Aaron and his remaining sons, Eleazar and Ithamar, “Take the grain offering^(JE) left over from the food offerings prepared without yeast and presented to the Lord and eat it beside the altar,^(JF) for it is most holy. ¹³Eat it in the sanctuary area,^(JG) because it is your share and your sons’ share of the food offerings presented to the Lord; for so I have been commanded.^(JH) ¹⁴But you and your sons and your daughters may eat the breast^(JI) that was waved and the thigh that was presented. Eat them in a ceremonially clean place;^(JJ) they have been given to you and your children as your share of the Israelites’ fellowship offerings. ¹⁵The thigh^(JK) that was presented and the breast that was waved must be brought with the fat portions of the food offerings, to be waved before the Lord as a wave offering.^(JL) This will be the perpetual share for you and your children, as the Lord has commanded.”

¹⁶When Moses inquired about the goat of the sin offering^[t]^(JM) and found that it had been burned up, he was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron’s remaining sons, and asked, ¹⁷“Why didn’t you eat the sin offering^(JN) in the sanctuary area? It is most holy; it was given to you to take away the guilt^(JO) of the community by making atonement for them before the Lord. ¹⁸Since its blood was not taken into the Holy Place,^(JP) you should have eaten the goat in the sanctuary area, as I commanded.^(JQ)”

¹⁹Aaron replied to Moses, “Today they sacrificed their sin offering and their burnt offering^(JR) before the Lord, but such things as this have happened to me. Would the Lord have been pleased if I had eaten the sin offering today?” ²⁰When Moses heard this, he was satisfied.

Clean and Unclean Food^(JS)

11 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, ²“Say to the Israelites: ‘Of all the animals that live on land, these are the ones you may eat:^(JT) ³You may eat any animal that has a divided hoof and that chews the cud.

They are unclean, and you are to regard them as unclean. ³⁶A spring, however, or a cistern for collecting water remains clean, but anyone who touches one of these carcasses is unclean. ³⁷If a carcass falls on any seeds that are to be planted, they remain clean. ³⁸But if water has been put on the seed and a carcass falls on it, it is unclean for you.

³⁹“‘If an animal that you are allowed to eat dies,^(KR) anyone who touches its carcass^(KS) will be unclean till evening. ⁴⁰Anyone who eats some of its carcass^(KT) must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening.^(KU) Anyone who picks up the carcass must wash their clothes, and they will be unclean till evening.

Purification After Childbirth

12 The Lord said to Moses, ²“Say to the Israelites: ‘A woman who becomes pregnant and gives birth to a son will be ceremonially unclean for seven days, just as she is unclean during her monthly period.^(LF) ³On the eighth day^(LG) the boy is to be circumcised.^(LH) ⁴Then the woman must wait thirty-three days to be purified from her bleeding. She must not touch anything sacred or go to the sanctuary until the days of her purification are over. ⁵If she gives birth to a daughter, for two weeks the woman will be unclean, as during her period. Then she must wait sixty-six days to be purified from her bleeding.

⁶“‘When the days of her purification for a son or daughter are over,^(LI) she is to bring to the priest at the entrance to the tent of meeting a year-old lamb^(LJ) for a burnt offering and a young pigeon or a dove for a sin offering.^[v]^(LK) ⁷He shall offer them before the Lord to make atonement for her, and then she will be ceremonially clean from her flow of blood.

“‘These are the regulations for the woman who gives birth to a boy or a girl. ⁸But if she cannot afford a lamb, she is to bring two doves or two young pigeons,^(LL) one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering.^(LM) In this way the priest will make atonement for her, and she will be clean.^(LN)’”

Regulations About Defiling Skin Diseases

13 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, ²“When anyone has a swelling^(LO) or a rash or a shiny spot^(LP) on their skin that may be a defiling skin disease,^[w]^(LQ) they must be brought to Aaron the priest^(LR) or to one of his sons^[x] who is a priest. ³The priest is to examine the sore on the skin, and if the hair in the sore has turned white and the sore appears to be more than skin deep, it is a defiling skin disease. When the priest examines that person, he shall pronounce them ceremonially unclean.^(LS) ⁴If the shiny spot^(LT) on the skin is white but does not appear to be more than skin deep and the hair in it has not turned white, the priest is to isolate the affected person for seven days.^(LU) ⁵On the seventh day^(LV) the priest is to examine them,^(LW) and if he sees that the sore is unchanged and has not spread in the skin, he is to isolate them for another seven days. ⁶On the seventh day the priest is to examine them again, and if the sore has faded and has not spread in the skin, the priest shall pronounce them clean;^(LX) it is only a rash. They must wash their clothes,^(LY) and they will be clean.^(LZ) ⁷But if the rash does spread in their skin after they have shown themselves to the priest to be pronounced clean, they must appear before the priest again.^(MA) ⁸The priest is to examine that person, and if the rash has spread in the skin, he shall pronounce them unclean; it is a defiling skin disease.

⁹“When anyone has a defiling skin disease, they must be brought to the priest. ¹⁰The priest is to examine them, and if there is a white swelling in the skin that has turned the hair white and if there is raw flesh in the swelling, ¹¹it is a chronic skin disease^(MB) and the priest shall pronounce them unclean. He is not to isolate them, because they are already unclean.

¹²“If the disease breaks out all over their skin and, so far as the priest can see, it covers all the skin of the affected person from head to foot, ¹³the priest is to examine them, and if the disease has covered their whole body, he shall pronounce them clean. Since it has all turned white, they are clean. ¹⁴But whenever raw flesh appears on them, they will be unclean. ¹⁵When the priest sees the raw flesh, he shall pronounce them unclean. The raw flesh is unclean; they have a defiling disease.^(MC) ¹⁶If the raw flesh changes and turns white, they must go to the priest. ¹⁷The priest is to examine them, and if the sores have turned white, the priest shall pronounce the affected person clean;^(MD) then they will be clean.

¹⁸“When someone has a boil^(ME) on their skin and it heals, ¹⁹and in the place where the boil was, a white swelling or reddish-white^(MF) spot^(MG) appears, they must present themselves to the priest. ²⁰The priest is to examine it, and if it appears to be more than skin deep and the hair in it has turned white, the priest shall pronounce that person unclean. It is a defiling skin disease^(MH) that has broken out where the boil was. ²¹But if, when the priest examines it, there is no white hair in it and it is not more than skin deep and has faded, then the priest is to isolate them for seven days. ²²If it is spreading in the skin, the priest shall pronounce them unclean; it is a defiling disease. ²³But if the spot is unchanged and has not spread, it is only a scar from the boil, and the priest shall pronounce them clean.^(MI)

²⁴“When someone has a burn on their skin and a reddish-white or white spot appears in the raw flesh of the burn, ²⁵the priest is to examine the spot, and if the hair in it has turned white, and it appears to be more than skin deep, it is a defiling disease that has broken out in the burn. 5 And if a soul sin, and hear the voice of swearing, and is a witness, whether he hath seen or known of it; if he do not utter it, then he shall bear his iniquity.

²Or if a soul touch any unclean thing, whether it be a carcase of an unclean beast, or a carcase of unclean cattle, or the carcase of unclean creeping things, and if it be hidden from him; he also shall be unclean, and guilty.

⁹And he put the mitre upon his head; also upon the mitre, even upon his forefront, did he put the golden plate, the holy crown; as the Lord commanded Moses.

¹⁰And Moses took the anointing oil, and anointed the tabernacle and all that was therein, and sanctified them.

¹¹And he sprinkled thereof upon the altar seven times, and anointed the altar and all his vessels, both the laver and his foot, to sanctify them.

¹²And he poured of the anointing oil upon Aaron's head, and anointed him, to sanctify him.

¹³And Moses brought Aaron's sons, and put coats upon them, and girded them with girdles, and put bonnets upon them; as the Lord commanded Moses.

¹⁴And he brought the bullock for the sin offering: and Aaron and his sons laid their hands upon the head of the bullock for the sin offering.

¹⁵And he slew it; and Moses took the blood, and put it upon the horns of the altar round about with his finger, and purified the altar, and poured the blood at the bottom of the altar, and sanctified it, to make reconciliation upon it.

¹⁶And he took all the fat that was upon the inwards, and the caul above the liver, and the two kidneys, and their fat, and Moses burned it upon the altar.

¹⁷But the bullock, and his hide, his flesh, and his dung, he burnt with fire without the camp; as the Lord commanded Moses.

¹⁸And he brought the ram for the burnt offering: and Aaron and his sons laid their hands upon the head of the ram.

¹⁹And he killed it; and Moses sprinkled the blood upon the altar round about.

²⁰And he cut the ram into pieces; and Moses burnt the head, and the pieces, and the fat.

²¹And he washed the inwards and the legs in water; and Moses burnt the whole ram upon the altar: it was a burnt sacrifice for a sweet savour, and an offering made by fire unto the Lord; as the Lord commanded Moses.

²²And he brought the other ram, the ram of consecration: and Aaron and his sons laid their hands upon the head of the ram.

²³And he slew it; and Moses took of the blood of it, and put it upon the tip of Aaron's right ear, and upon the thumb of his right hand, and upon the great toe of his right foot.

²⁴And he brought Aaron's sons, and Moses put of the blood upon the tip of their right ear, and upon the thumbs of their right hands, and upon the great toes of their right feet: and Moses sprinkled the blood upon the altar round about.

²⁵And he took the fat, and the rump, and all the fat that was upon the inwards, and the caul above the liver, and the two kidneys, and their fat, and the right shoulder:

²⁶And out of the basket of unleavened bread, that was before the Lord, he took one unleavened cake, and a cake of oiled bread, and one wafer, and put them on the fat, and upon the right shoulder:

²⁷And he put all upon Aaron's hands, and upon his sons' hands, and waved them for a wave offering before the Lord.

²⁸And Moses took them from off their hands, and burnt them on the altar upon the burnt offering: they were consecrations for a sweet savour: it is an offering made by fire unto the Lord.

²⁹And Moses took the breast, and waved it for a wave offering before the Lord: for of the ram of consecration it was Moses' part; as the Lord commanded Moses.

³⁰And Moses took of the anointing oil, and of the blood which was upon the altar, and sprinkled it upon Aaron, and upon his garments, and upon his sons, and upon his sons' garments with him; and sanctified Aaron, and his garments, and his sons, and his sons' garments with him.

³¹And Moses said unto Aaron and to his sons, Boil the flesh at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation: and there eat it with the bread that is in the basket of consecrations, as I commanded, saying, Aaron and his sons shall eat it.

³²And that which remaineth of the flesh and of the bread shall ye burn with fire.

³³And ye shall not go out of the door of the tabernacle of the congregation in seven days, until the days of your consecration be at an end: for seven days shall he consecrate you.

³⁴As he hath done this day, so the Lord hath commanded to do, to make an atonement for you.

³⁵Therefore shall ye abide at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation day and night seven days, and keep the charge of the Lord, that ye die not: for so I am commanded.

³⁶So Aaron and his sons did all things which the Lord commanded by the hand of Moses.

9 And it came to pass on the eighth day, that Moses called Aaron and his sons, and the elders of Israel;

²And he said unto Aaron, Take thee a young calf for a sin offering, and a ram for a burnt offering, without blemish, and offer them before the Lord.

³And unto the children of Israel thou shalt speak, saying, Take ye a kid of the goats for a sin offering; and a calf and a lamb, both of the first year, without blemish, for a burnt offering;

⁴Also a bullock and a ram for peace offerings, to sacrifice before the Lord; and a meat offering mingled with oil: for to day the Lord will appear unto you.

⁵And they brought that which Moses commanded before the tabernacle of the congregation: and all the congregation drew near and stood before the Lord.

⁶And Moses said, This is the thing which the Lord commanded that ye should do: and the glory of the Lord shall appear unto you.

⁷And Moses said unto Aaron, Go unto the altar, and offer thy sin offering, and thy burnt offering, and make an atonement for thyself, and for the people: and offer the offering of the people, and make an atonement for them; as the Lord commanded.

⁸Aaron therefore went unto the altar, and slew the calf of the sin offering, which was for himself.

⁹And the sons of Aaron brought the blood unto him: and he dipped his finger in the blood, and put it upon the horns of the altar, and poured out the blood at the bottom of the altar:

¹⁰But the fat, and the kidneys, and the caul above the liver of the sin offering, he burnt upon the altar; as the Lord commanded Moses.

¹¹And the flesh and the hide he burnt with fire without the camp.

¹²And he slew the burnt offering; and Aaron's sons presented unto him the blood, which he sprinkled round about upon the altar.

¹³And they presented the burnt offering unto him, with the pieces thereof, and the head: and he burnt them upon the altar.

¹⁴And he did wash the inwards and the legs, and burnt them upon the burnt offering on the altar.

¹⁵And he brought the people's offering, and took the goat, which was the sin offering for the people, and slew it, and offered it for sin, as the first.

¹⁶And he brought the burnt offering, and offered it according to the manner.

¹⁷And he brought the meat offering, and took an handful thereof, and burnt it upon the altar, beside the burnt sacrifice of the morning.

¹⁸He slew also the bullock and the ram for a sacrifice of peace offerings, which was for the people: and Aaron's sons presented unto him the blood, which he sprinkled upon the altar round about,

¹⁹And the fat of the bullock and of the ram, the rump, and that which covereth the inwards, and the kidneys, and the caul above the liver:

²⁰And they put the fat upon the breasts, and he burnt the fat upon the altar:

²¹And the breasts and the right shoulder Aaron waved for a wave offering before the Lord; as Moses commanded.

²²And Aaron lifted up his hand toward the people, and blessed them, and came down from offering of the sin offering, and the burnt offering, and peace offerings.

²³And Moses and Aaron went into the tabernacle of the congregation, and came out, and blessed the people: and the glory of the Lord appeared unto all the people.

²⁴And there came a fire out from before the Lord, and consumed upon the altar the burnt offering and the fat: which when all the people saw, they shouted, and fell on their faces.

10 And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the Lord, which he commanded them not.

²And there went out fire from the Lord, and devoured them, and they died before the Lord.

³Then Moses said unto Aaron, This is it that the Lord spake, saying, I will be sanctified in them that come nigh me, and before all the people I will be glorified. And Aaron held his peace.

⁴And Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel the uncle of Aaron, and said unto them, Come near, carry your brethren from before the sanctuary out of the camp.

⁵So they went near, and carried them in their coats out of the camp; as Moses had said.

⁶And Moses said unto Aaron, and unto Eleazar and unto Ithamar, his sons, Uncover not your heads, neither rend your clothes; lest ye die, and lest wrath come upon all the people: but let your brethren, the whole house of Israel, bewail the burning which the Lord hath kindled.

⁷And ye shall not go out from the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, lest ye die: for the anointing oil of the Lord is upon you. And they did according to the word of Moses.

⁸And the Lord spake unto Aaron, saying,

⁹Do not drink wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tabernacle of the congregation, lest ye die: it shall be a statute for ever throughout your generations:

¹⁰And that ye may put difference between holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean;

¹¹And that ye may teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the Lord hath spoken unto them by the hand of Moses.

¹²And Moses spake unto Aaron, and unto Eleazar and unto Ithamar, his sons that were left, Take the meat offering that remaineth of the offerings of the Lord made by fire, and eat it without leaven beside the altar: for it is most holy:

¹³And ye shall eat it in the holy place, because it is thy due, and thy sons' due, of the sacrifices of the Lord made by fire: for so I am commanded.

¹⁴And the wave breast and heave shoulder shall ye eat in a clean place; thou, and thy sons, and thy daughters with thee: for they be thy due, and thy sons' due, which are given out of the sacrifices of peace offerings of the children of Israel.

¹⁵The heave shoulder and the wave breast shall they bring with the offerings made by fire of the fat, to wave it for a wave offering before the Lord; and it shall be thine, and thy sons' with thee, by a statute for ever; as the Lord hath commanded.

¹⁶And Moses diligently sought the goat of the sin offering, and, behold, it was burnt: and he was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, the sons of Aaron which were left alive, saying,

¹⁷Wherefore have ye not eaten the sin offering in the holy place, seeing it is most holy, and God hath given it you to bear the iniquity of the congregation, to make atonement for them before the Lord?

¹⁸Behold, the blood of it was not brought in within the holy place: ye should indeed have eaten it in the holy place, as I commanded.

¹⁹And Aaron said unto Moses, Behold, this day have they offered their sin offering and their burnt offering before the Lord; and such things have befallen me: and if I had eaten the sin offering to day, should it have been accepted in the sight of the Lord?

²⁰And when Moses heard that, he was content.

11 And the Lord spake unto Moses and to Aaron, saying unto them,

²Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, These are the beasts which ye shall eat among all the beasts that are on the earth.

³Whatsoever parteth the hoof, and is clovenfooted, and cheweth the cud, among the beasts, that shall ye eat.

⁴Nevertheless these shall ye not eat of them that chew the cud, or of them that divide the hoof: as the camel, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you.

⁵And the coney, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you.

⁶And the hare, because he cheweth the cud, but divideth not the hoof; he is unclean unto you.

⁷And the swine, though he divide the hoof, and be clovenfooted, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you.

⁸Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcase shall ye not touch; they are unclean to you.

⁹These shall ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them shall ye eat.

¹⁰And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you:

¹¹They shall be even an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, but ye shall have their carcases in abomination.

¹²Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that shall be an abomination unto you.

¹³And these are they which ye shall have in abomination among the fowls; they shall not be eaten, they are an abomination: the eagle, and the ossifrage, and the ospray,

¹⁴And the vulture, and the kite after his kind;

¹⁵Every raven after his kind;

¹⁶And the owl, and the night hawk, and the cuckow, and the hawk after his kind,

¹⁷And the little owl, and the cormorant, and the great owl,

¹⁸And the swan, and the pelican, and the gier eagle,

¹⁹And the stork, the heron after her kind, and the lapwing, and the bat.

²⁰All fowls that creep, going upon all four, shall be an abomination unto you.

²¹Yet these may ye eat of every flying creeping thing that goeth upon all four, which have legs above their feet, to leap withal upon the earth;

²²Even these of them ye may eat; the locust after his kind, and the bald locust after his kind, and the beetle after his kind, and the grasshopper after his kind.

²³But all other flying creeping things, which have four feet, shall be an abomination unto you.

²⁴And for these ye shall be unclean: whosoever toucheth the carcase of them shall be unclean until the even.

²⁵And whosoever beareth ought of the carcase of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even.

²⁶The carcases of every beast which divideth the hoof, and is not clovenfooted, nor cheweth the cud, are unclean unto you: every one that toucheth them shall be unclean.

²⁷And whatsoever goeth upon his paws, among all manner of beasts that go on all four, those are unclean unto you: whoso toucheth their carcase shall be unclean until the even.

²⁸And he that beareth the carcase of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: they are unclean unto you.

²⁹These also shall be unclean unto you among the creeping things that creep upon the earth; the weasel, and the mouse, and the tortoise after his kind,

³⁰And the ferret, and the chameleon, and the lizard, and the snail, and the mole.

³¹These are unclean to you among all that creep: whosoever doth touch them, when they be dead, shall be unclean until the even.

³²And upon whatsoever any of them, when they are dead, doth fall, it shall be unclean; whether it be any vessel of wood, or raiment, or skin, or sack, whatsoever vessel it be, wherein any work is done, it must be put into water, and it shall be unclean until the even; so it shall be cleansed.

³³And every earthen vessel, whereinto any of them falleth, whatsoever is in it shall be unclean; and ye shall break it.

³⁴Of all meat which may be eaten, that on which such water cometh shall be unclean: and all drink that may be drunk in every such vessel shall be unclean.

³⁵And every thing whereupon any part of their carcase falleth shall be unclean; whether it be oven, or ranges for pots, they shall be broken down: for they are unclean and shall be unclean unto you.

³⁶Nevertheless a fountain or pit, wherein there is plenty of water, shall be clean: but that which toucheth their carcase shall be unclean.

³⁷And if any part of their carcase fall upon any sowing seed which is to be sown, it shall be clean.

³⁸But if any water be put upon the seed, and any part of their carcase fall thereon, it shall be unclean unto you.

³⁹And if any beast, of which ye may eat, die; he that toucheth the carcase thereof shall be unclean until the even.

⁴⁰And he that eateth of the carcase of it shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even: he also that beareth the carcase of it shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even.

⁴¹And every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth shall be an abomination; it shall not be eaten.

⁴²Whatsoever goeth upon the belly, and whatsoever goeth upon all four, or whatsoever hath more feet among all creeping things that creep upon the earth, them ye shall not eat; for they are an abomination.

⁴³Ye shall not make yourselves abominable with any creeping thing that creepeth, neither shall ye make yourselves unclean with them, that ye should be defiled thereby.

⁴⁴For I am the Lord your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy: neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

⁴⁵For I am the Lord that bringeth you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.

⁴⁶This is the law of the beasts, and of the fowl, and of every living creature that moveth in the waters, and of every creature that creepeth upon the earth:

⁴⁷To make a difference between the unclean and the clean, and between the beast that may be eaten and the beast that may not be eaten.

12 And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

²Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, If a woman have conceived seed, and born a man child: then she shall be unclean seven days; according to the days of the separation for her infirmity shall she be unclean.

³And in the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised.

⁴And she shall then continue in the blood of her purifying three and thirty days; she shall touch no hallowed thing, nor come into the sanctuary, until the days of her purifying be fulfilled.

⁵But if she bear a maid child, then she shall be unclean two weeks, as in her separation: and she shall continue in the blood of her purifying threescore and six days.

⁶And when the days of her purifying are fulfilled, for a son, or for a daughter, she shall bring a lamb of the first year for a burnt offering, and a young pigeon, or a turtledove, for a sin offering, unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, unto the priest:

⁷Who shall offer it before the Lord, and make an atonement for her; and she shall be cleansed from the issue of her blood. This is the law for her that hath born a male or a female.

⁸And if she be not able to bring a lamb, then she shall bring two turtles, or two young pigeons; the one for the burnt offering, and the other for a sin offering: and the priest shall make an atonement for her, and she shall be clean.

13 And the Lord spake unto Moses and Aaron, saying,

²When a man shall have in the skin of his flesh a rising, a scab, or bright spot, and it be in the skin of his flesh like the plague of leprosy; then he shall be brought unto Aaron the priest, or unto one of his sons the priests:

³And the priest shall look on the plague in the skin of the flesh: and when the hair in the plague is turned white, and the plague in sight be deeper than the skin of his flesh, it is a plague of leprosy: and the priest shall look on him, and pronounce him unclean.

⁴If the bright spot be white in the skin of his flesh, and in sight be not deeper than the skin, and the hair thereof be not turned white; then the priest shall shut up him that hath the plague seven days:

⁵And the priest shall look on him the seventh day: and, behold, if the plague in his sight be at a stay, and the plague spread not in the skin; then the priest shall shut him up seven days more:

⁶And the priest shall look on him again the seventh day: and, behold, if the plague be somewhat dark, and the plague spread not in the skin, the priest shall pronounce him clean: it is but a scab: and he shall wash his clothes, and be clean.

⁷But if the scab spread much abroad in the skin, after that he hath been seen of the priest for his cleansing, he shall be seen of the priest again.

⁸And if the priest see that, behold, the scab spreadeth in the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean: it is a leprosy.

⁹When the plague of leprosy is in a man, then he shall be brought unto the priest;

¹⁰And the priest shall see him: and, behold, if the rising be white in the skin, and it have turned the hair white, and there be quick raw flesh in the rising;

¹¹It is an old leprosy in the skin of his flesh, and the priest shall pronounce him unclean, and shall not shut him up: for he is unclean.

¹²And if a leprosy break out abroad in the skin, and the leprosy cover all the skin of him that hath the plague from his head even to his foot, wheresoever the priest looketh;

¹³Then the priest shall consider: and, behold, if the leprosy have covered all his flesh, he shall pronounce him clean that hath the plague: it is all turned white: he is clean.

¹⁴But when raw flesh appeareth in him, he shall be unclean.

¹⁵And the priest shall see the raw flesh, and pronounce him to be unclean: for the raw flesh is unclean: it is a leprosy.

¹⁶Or if the raw flesh turn again, and be changed unto white, he shall come unto the priest;

¹⁷And the priest shall see him: and, behold, if the plague be turned into white; then the priest shall pronounce him clean that hath the plague: he is clean.

¹⁸The flesh also, in which, even in the skin thereof, was a boil, and is healed,

¹⁹And in the place of the boil there be a white rising, or a bright spot, white, and somewhat reddish, and it be shewed to the priest;

²⁰And if, when the priest seeth it, behold, it be in sight lower than the skin, and the hair thereof be turned white; the priest shall pronounce him unclean: it is a plague of leprosy broken out of the boil.

²¹But if the priest look on it, and, behold, there be no white hairs therein, and if it be not lower than the skin, but be somewhat dark; then the priest shall shut him up seven days:

²²And if it spread much abroad in the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean: it is a plague.

²³But if the bright spot stay in his place, and spread not, it is a burning boil; and the priest shall pronounce him clean.

²⁴Or if there be any flesh, in the skin whereof there is a hot burning, and the quick flesh that burneth have a white bright spot, somewhat reddish, or white;

²⁵Then the priest shall look upon it: and, behold, if the hair in the bright spot be turned white, and it be in sight deeper than the skin; it is a leprosy broken out of the burning: wherefore the priest shall pronounce him unclean: it is the plague of leprosy.

²⁶But if the priest look on it, and, behold, there be no white hair in the bright spot, and it be no lower than the other skin, but be somewhat dark; then the priest shall shut him up seven days:

²⁷And the priest shall look upon him the seventh day: and if it be spread much abroad in the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean: it is the plague of leprosy.

²⁸And if the bright spot stay in his place, and spread not in the skin, but it be somewhat dark; it is a rising of the burning, and the priest shall pronounce him clean: for it is an inflammation of the burning.

²⁹If a man or woman have a plague upon the head or the beard;

³⁰Then the priest shall see the plague: and, behold, if it be in sight deeper than the skin; and there be in it a yellow thin hair; then the priest shall pronounce him unclean: it is a dry scall, even a leprosy upon the head or beard.

³¹And if the priest look on the plague of the scall, and, behold, it be not in sight deeper than the skin, and that there is no black hair in it; then the priest shall shut up him that hath the plague of the scall seven days:

³²And in the seventh day the priest shall look on the plague: and, behold, if the scall spread not, and there be in it no yellow hair, and the scall be not in sight deeper than the skin;

³³He shall be shaven, but the scall shall he not shave; and the priest shall shut up him that hath the scall seven days more:

³⁴And in the seventh day the priest shall look on the scall: and, behold, if the scall be not spread in the skin, nor be in sight deeper than the skin; then the priest shall pronounce him clean: and he shall wash his clothes, and be clean.

³⁵But if the scall spread much in the skin after his cleansing;

³⁶Then the priest shall look on him: and, behold, if the scall be spread in the skin, the priest shall not seek for yellow hair; he is unclean.

³⁷But if the scall be in his sight at a stay, and that there is black hair grown up therein; the scall is healed, he is clean: and the priest shall pronounce him clean.

³⁸If a man also or a woman have in the skin of their flesh bright spots, even white bright spots;

³⁹Then the priest shall look: and, behold, if the bright spots in the skin of their flesh be darkish white; it is a freckled spot that groweth in the skin; he is clean.

⁴⁰And the man whose hair is fallen off his head, he is bald; yet is he clean.

⁴¹And he that hath his hair fallen off from the part of his head toward his face, he is forehead bald: yet is he clean.

⁴²And if there be in the bald head, or bald forehead, a white reddish sore; it is a leprosy sprung up in his bald head, or his bald forehead.

⁴³Then the priest shall look upon it: and, behold, if the rising of the sore be white reddish in his bald head, or in his bald forehead, as the leprosy appeareth in the skin of the flesh;

⁴⁴He is a leprous man, he is unclean: the priest shall pronounce him utterly unclean; his plague is in his head.

⁴⁵And the leper in whom the plague is, his clothes shall be rent, and his head bare, and he shall put a covering upon his upper lip, and shall cry, Unclean, unclean.

⁴⁶All the days wherein the plague shall be in him he shall be defiled; he is unclean: he shall dwell alone; without the camp shall his habitation be.

⁴⁷The garment also that the plague of leprosy is in, whether it be a woollen garment, or a linen garment;

⁴⁸Whether it be in the warp, or woof; of linen, or of woollen; whether in a skin, or in any thing made of skin;

⁴⁹And if the plague be greenish or reddish in the garment, or in the skin, either in the warp, or in the woof, or in any thing of skin; it is a plague of leprosy, and shall be shewed unto the priest:

⁵⁰And the priest shall look upon the plague, and shut up it that hath the plague seven days:

⁵¹And he shall look on the plague on the seventh day: if the plague be spread in the garment, either in the warp, or in the woof, or in a skin, or in any work that is made of skin; the plague is a fretting leprosy; it is unclean.

⁵²He shall therefore burn that garment, whether warp or woof, in woollen or in linen, or any thing of skin, wherein the plague is: for it is a fretting leprosy; it shall be burnt in the fire.

⁵³And if the priest shall look, and, behold, the plague be not spread in the garment, either in the warp, or in the woof, or in any thing of skin;

⁵⁴Then the priest shall command that they wash the thing wherein the plague is, and he shall shut it up seven days more:

⁵⁵And the priest shall look on the plague, after that it is washed: and, behold, if the plague have not changed his colour, and the plague be not spread; it is unclean; thou shalt burn it in the fire; it is fret inward, whether it be bare within or without.

⁵⁶And if the priest look, and, behold, the plague be somewhat dark after the washing of it; then he shall rend it out of the garment, or out of the skin, or out of the warp, or out of the woof:

⁵⁷And if it appear still in the garment, either in the warp, or in the woof, or in any thing of skin; it is a spreading plague: thou shalt burn that wherein the plague is with fire.

⁵⁸And the garment, either warp, or woof, or whatsoever thing of skin it be, which thou shalt wash, if the plague be departed from them, then it shall be washed the second time, and shall be clean.

⁵⁹This is the law of the plague of leprosy in a garment of woollen or linen, either in the warp, or woof, or any thing of skins, to pronounce it clean, or to pronounce it unclean.
