⁴⁰ And on the first day you shall take for yourselves the ^[a]foliage of beautiful trees, palm branches and boughs of leafy trees and willows of the brook, and you shall be glad before Yahweh your God for seven days.

¹² And you shall ^(A)be glad before Yahweh your God, you and your sons and daughters, your male and female slaves, and the ^(B)Levite who is within your gates, since ^(C)he has no portion or inheritance with you.

¹⁸ But ^(A)you shall eat them before Yahweh your God in ^(B)the place which Yahweh your God will choose, you and your son and daughter, and your male and female slaves, and the ^(C)Levite who is within your gates; and you shall ^(D)be glad before Yahweh your God in all that you send forth your hand to do.

²⁶ And you may spend the money for whatever your ^[a]heart desires: for oxen or sheep or wine or strong drink or whatever your ^[b]heart ^[c]desires; and ^(A)there you shall eat in the presence of Yahweh your God and be glad, you and your household.

⁴⁷ “^(A)Because you did not serve Yahweh your God with gladness and a merry heart—because of the abundance of all things,

¹² I know that ^[a]there is ^(A)nothing better for them than to be glad and to do good in one’s lifetime; ¹³ moreover, that every man who eats and drinks and sees good in all his labor—it is the ^(B)gift of God.

¹⁸ Here is what I have seen to be ^(A)good, which is ^[a]beautiful: to eat, to drink, and to see good in all one’s labor in which he labors under the sun during the few days of his life which God has given him; for this is his ^(B)portion. ¹⁹ Furthermore, as for every man to whom ^(C)God has given riches and wealth, He has also ^(D)empowered him to eat from them and to take up his portion and be glad in his labor; this is the ^(E)gift of God. ²⁰ For he will not remember much the days of his life because ^(F)God allows ^[b]him to occupy himself with the gladness of his heart.
